Great video! Is it possible to use just an NHL3.5 and sand mix, using chunks of other aggregate such as crushed roof tiles for changes in texture?
Hi, thank you for the comment, glad you liked the video. Yes you could use a NHL3.5. However, I would advise leaving to slake overnight if you are using only NHL3.5 with no Calcium Oxide. This will make the harl more sticky!!

Wanted to ask, in your opinion is possible to use cement (for better setting) with hydrated lime and sand (0,5:1:5 ratio) for rendering a brick wall layed with lime mortar, as it is quite difficult to find hydraulic lime in our region?
Or even small amounts of cement will trap moisture, make wall unbreathable and ruin the bricks?

Hey, even small amounts of cement in lime mortars inhibit breathability. This is due to the formulation of a spiked crystallisation, which obstructs moisture noveemnt.
It would depend on masonry type, climate, exposure, and existing mortar properties.
You could slake the hydrated lime to a putty and leave for 48hrs, then mix with a pozzolan like Trass or a reactive clay.

Thanks for putting this video up - very useful for a carpenter about to render a cob extension. One question, what is already on the walls you were harling? It looks like some has been dubbing out before the harled coat was applied.
Hey Adrain, correct on this particular wall we ended up placing 3 levels of mortar before applying the harl. First has a deep pack and void fill, second was a pointing to the deep areas of masonry. Third was another pointing level bring the mortar out to level the undulations in the masonry.
Looking at a few Harling videos today .
Another video shows a gentleman suffering burns to his wrist,through lime absorbing his glove cuff.
I notice you have no gloves and yet there is the splatter.
Did you suffer any burns afterwards.?

Lime only burns its wet/damp, so the gloves soak up the moisture in the Harling and stay wet for longer. No gloves, the Lime quickly dries and is no where near as damaging. When we are Harling at brew and lunch we totally was off with clean water and apply vinegar. Take 3 loose t-shirts and change at brew.

@@antigoogleman1135 If you are using Calcium Oxide you will need to mix it in something metal. However for Hydrauclic and Putty there will be no tempture rise so plastic will be fine.
Took me quite awhile to learn that (rendering) is pretty much the same as what we call plastering.
And now i have to learn about harling. lol
Rendering for outside in the UK. Stucco in the USA. In the UK Plastering is generally indoor work.
if you used a coal shovel with flattened ends then you get a much better spread
