  • The challenge is set: using the same violin and bow, we'll embark on an exploration of the Thomastik DYNAMO and Thomastik PI Peter Infeld strings. With Lena's masterful performance, we'll delve into the tonal characteristics, responsiveness, and expressiveness of each string type.
Throughout the video, you'll listen a side-by-side comparison. From rich sonority to dynamic projection, we'll uncover how these strings enhance and shape the violin's sound.
The video reaches its crescendo as we draw conclusions from two perspectives: that of a violin maker and a musician.

I am listening in high-end equipment and the PIs were definitely clearer and brighter without being nasal. UA-cam compression takes out all nuance from the Dynamos. Was unable to notice the nuance from the Dynamos. They came out muddy in comparison to the PIs. The room is also very predominant in the recording, but again, UA-cam compression is affecting what the listeners hear.

I preferred the Dynamo Strings as well. I play Guitar, and it's important to know that certain strings pair better with some instruments than others. But, quality Brands and construction can make some strings consistently better than others.

I also have purchased and tried the Dynamo strings compard to Pi... so far the Dynamo seems to be a string set that brings out more depth to the sound....with nice volume...

Nice short video :).. Edgar + Lena is always a winning combination.. The Dynamo did sound to me a little fuller / resonant, which is a quality I enjoy but maybe others will like that more direct punchy sound on the PIs.

No preference from my side. But, i find it good to have two such valid options for selecting a good string that vary a bit.

Would have been better if she played a slower piece with lot of legato notes and you played it back one after the other, u need to hear for a little longer to judge them. Most likely they sound way different in real. But i felt neither did justice to ur violin.maybe it needed playing in for a while. Best to use a played in violin for string comparisons..my 2 cents..😊 and keep videos a bit longer pls..❤

Dynamo seems to be somewhat brighter and louder than PI. Depending on the actual instrument one or the other might be better.

I chose Dynamo just because it sounded to me louder! Anyway, when I was playing a viola which I wasn't really satisfied with, I tried every famous string. But since I owned my current one, I have just put on standard ones and stopped thinking about strings. If I had Edger's viola one day? Maybe I would also let anyone decide which one is appropriate! LOL

I have a Ming Jiang Zhu S925 and I have used Evah Pirazzi green and gold string sets which sound great on it. I took a chance on the Dynamo strings and they were just as good, if not, better - there is richness in the sound and so many colors.

The best strings from Thomastik is still Dominant. All these new ones come and go like the Dominant Pro which was a failure

Not to be mean, because Lena is a great player, and you are a fantastic maker, and it could just be my cheap speakers, or your microphone, but neither sounded great. Yeah, the pi set had real good response and punchy, and maybe the Dynamo set was a little fuller with more color, but the bass low end is missing, to my ear. I'd love to hear (I know no one uses gut anymore) Eudoxas or some heavy olive's on that fiddle. I'm sure the response would be much worse (Eudoxa's shouldn't be too bad actually) - but, I'd like to hear some bass out of that fiddle, and just try and see what it sounds like with heavy strings? It might be weird for Lena to play though, those fat strings - plus made in Germany - we Austrians can't have that ... heh heh ... minen mutter was from Hermagor, but my dad is German - so I usually go with the Evah's - heh heh. It is interesting that each violin likes a certain string, even mixed sets sometimes. Too bad they cost so much, so we can't change them out willy nilly when we feel like it.

You can describe strings but to say that one is better than the other, I would argue that it depends on the instrument. Each instrument responds differently to the same strings.

Hi, don't all steel e-strings sound the same?

    • @neonsamurai1348
      @neonsamurai1348 10 місяців тому +2

No, there are many types of E strings, such as solid, wound, gut, solid spiral, and solid plated -they can also be carbon steel or stainless (or both if wound), and they can be plated in tin, chrome, silver, gold, or platinum. Even among basic steel E strings they can respond differently to each instrument; they can be shrill or be prone to squealing while others respond well.

The pl strings sounds less strong but more worm. Not many years ago violins hade strings from guts that are less loud but wormer. That is the saund the great composers heard and knew. This is the reason l prefer pl strings for classical music

@@EdgarRuss I need a much more responsive G string, a better bow... The sound has improved since I moved the soundpost after watching one of your videos. Currently using Vision regular. Better than Dominants, Tonicas and Violinos. My violin likes more tension I believe, still the G string is weak.

I also wish I could find the right strings for my violin. . I used Larsen Virtuosos, but the G and D are super open and broad, yet the A is not. After a while the G and D just seemed too unfocused...especially the D. I bought some Evah Greens. Haven't put them on. Concerned they'll be too hard on my fingers, especially as the Fall season is coming and the house will soon be much drier. I like clarity without a too much surface noise.
Tried Dominants and Obligatos. Dominants too open. Obligato dark drab with sharp edge on A string and overall not enough volume.

@@vgmusic4679 I did try PI on a new violin and also on an old French violin from mid 1800s. They were fine on the new violin but not on the old. My current violin is French 1920's. It not bright or dark. Well balanced, medium.
