    "A neutron star has collapsed to such an extent that all the empty space of the atoms have been squeezed out leaving only the nucleons behind." So the supernova occurs due to a rapid and spontaneous disassociation and ejection of the atomic electrons from their respective nucleons?

      Actually, no. The nucleons in a neutron star are formed due to the extreme effects of gravity pushing and fusing together protons and electrons, thus creating neutrons. This effect creates massive amount of energy which in turn causes the outer layer of the star to explode, creating a supernova.
