Please keep the fieldwork sessions in the reviews! So nice to see how they fight out of the turn and how fast they fade in an open field. Also, I find the contrast of you throwing open shots vs. hitting gaps on courses give a really comprehensive review of how the disc will fly in just about any situation. As always keep up the great work. Thank you so much for all of the amazing content!
yes please! love reviews like this!!! would love to see every review in this format! keep up the great work! I am sad to see the grace go away though! I bought one because of you and now I own 4 and is my favorite disc lol
SUCH a good disc for sure! I definitely think more reviews like this will become more standard, either like this or very vloggy, but definitely excited to be able to up the production quality
@@BodanzaDiscGolf Not too vloggy please 😀 I know you need some viewing time to please YT algorithms, but a liked the "analytical" approach of that video, 3 field shots with 3 angles x 2 (head & tail wind) + 3 holes, 1 for each line, that's the ideal review for me. Definitely not easy to replicate, unless you have a "home course" you know whre to find these 3 holes 😉
also if you like the grace I think you can have it in the bag! Matty O throws it alot so even if your a top pro seems good for any player
Yes please! Grace is so good
The problem with discussing Destroyer consistency is the fact that you can find vast differences in one stack of them in the same store.
No that's the beauty my friend. Having the same mold/feel for different shots/shapes = consistency. Once you figure out how to interpret the variances in the mold it will change your life. All mixed bag players bag a destroyer, all innova sponsored players bag a destroyer, any pro that is allowed, bags a destroyer. All brands compare and strive to make a disc to rival the destroyer. Coming from an Innova player of 13 years, why try a copycat...just throw the real deal DESTROYER
@@davidwellman5221 That's what I was trying to say lol
I can see that argument, it is great to have one hand feel for a number of different style discs, but the down side is replacing them if lost. Huge turn off for me not being able to replace a disc with a consistent flight pattern
The best chance you got of checking similarity between the different years of halo destroyers, is to get some of the same color. The color of the outer rim and the inside of it are major factors in the stability of the year. I hope this makes sense.
And what colors are the flippiest/most stable?
I remember like 15 years ago Avery Jenkins saying that red star plastic was the most over stable and I still feel like that's true...
@@ericjepson3765 depends on the run, the 2022 was the first time I noticed even players began to call it out. I think it's the 2022 run of Calvin's where he says the black rim is the most understable and the white rim is the most stable. I found that to be true as well.
moved to denver about 2 years ago and the elevation really makes a difference with disc stability. i had to completely redo my bag when i got here so be prepared for that.
I’m in the springs. What are your go to courses?
Not sure if this was mentioned already. Calvin said during the 2022 season that the colors of each halo destroyers matters in stability apparently (In Eric Oakley's "Is it good" series). the black rim one is apparently supposed to be the least overstable.
I have one of those black ones, its super stiff and pop toppy and for some reason it goes way farther than any of my other dics.
I am going to have a G★ Destroyer in my bag, not that I need it even if its the right amount of stable for my arm, but because its sooo pretty in its purple shine... ;)
He's entered the "I'll just use different stabilities of destroyers for every distance driver slot in my bag" phase that it would seem every disc golfer goes through. I did the same thing only with Kastaplast Gryms and Grym-xs
Heimburg, Socki bit, and G star?
Over stable, stable with flip and Flippy straight?
I do the same thing with rocs and tbird 3
I’m currently throwing 375-400 and I bag a grace as well. My more overstable distance driver is currently the Photon, I’ve gotten slight turn in head winds but very minor. My favorite photon is a full weight fission.
I'm pretty sure I have been watching you for possibly 3 months now and I absolutely love your videos. Specifically because you do content that I usually have to find in seven videos all mashed into one and it makes understanding what discs to actually use much easier because of your opinion. And specifically because you throw about the same distance I do. Keep striving for your goals I'm trying to do the same thing in disc golf It's my new natural high besides bowling. I'm from the 716 North Tonawanda New York represent
I would love to see this same video with the Dynamic Discs Raider!
I use them as my only distance driver and bag 5! The runs seem to be pretty consistent, but between the plastics there is a noticeable difference! The chameleon Sockibomb ones are super overstable, and the fusion stock runs are slight standup from Heiser!
(Similar arm speed to you right now, maybe a tiny bit faster)
As someone who throws a little bit further (450-500) and who uses the Halo Destroyer as my primary distance driver, I definitely prefer the 2021 mold of the halo destroyer. The pop top on it was more noticeable and it was more stable than the other two. Right off the shelf it was extremely overstable compared with the other two, but after it a few rounds with it, it started to flip up to flat and glide whereas the other tended to turn a little bit more. For me the 2021 was also much more dependable in the wind as well. To be honest, I really did not like the gummy feel of the 2023 destroyer and have started to use the new horizon cloudbreaker instead which felt more like something in between the 2021 and 2022 destroyer to me.
I like the addition of fieldwork in these review-style videos since we get to see the variations between the discs being compared. I think having the entire fieldwork session in one part of the video (or as a precursor to a course video) would help my understanding of flights as opposed to bouncing between fieldwork and playing a course.
The blue 2021 is my go to for OS windy shots!
yeah, looks sick too! I'll play ya for it ;)
@@BodanzaDiscGolf 👀👀
after our suit is settled of course. Have your representation reach out to mine!
Echoing everyone that, as far as I know, the Jonesboro destroyers were 2021 beefcakes with a new coat of paint.
I have a 2022 pink and black Heimburg destroyer that absolutely BOMBS. It was way more glidey and flippy even out of the box, and after being it up for an entire year it gives me incredible S-turns with low to medium effort. It's like a totally different disc than the '21s. I haven't tried the 2023 destroyer but I'm not super hopeful about it.
Thanks for making the video!
haha my pink cheimberg destroyer is the beefiest disc ive ever thrown. literally dumps right out of my hand. (not a flex, but i throw 450 golf shot) crazy stable
Since Lat64 Grace's has become to understable for you, maybe a Innova Halo or champion Wraith or a MVP Zenith could be options to try out.😊
Great video, as always👍
Try the sockibot destroyers if you want a bomber! I think that run will fit perfectly with your arm speed 👍🏻
I have a handful of the raptor stamps, they are the best flying destroyers I've ever thrown.
@@tysonkauth7232 yes I've have sockibots a 2x and and a 4x p Mac b. My raptor destroyer has been my favorite by far and only one I bag. It's stiff with slight dome. I use it for 4hands 390ft and back hand headwind 400ft. Never turns over like the Zeus does
Yea I’m likin the field work and course play combo 🔥
I ABSOLUTELY want to see more reviews like this please!
Also - black rim is not 2022, it is the 2021 - 2022 are pink/white, chartreuse/pink, and i believe pink/blue
There are certainly specific runs of Destroyer people look for just like Sexybirds. Early penned one, 4x penned, AJ 2 and 3 lines and ricky raptor run to name a few. I thought the Jonesboro run was the 2021 run tho just bottom stamped. Like 85% sure of that. Also, the first run 21's were nearly impossible to use meat hooks but the later runs were more useable.
yes, all 2022 calvins had a pink core, black and grey were leftover from 2021 run
I’ve always wondered why you want to get rid of the Graces. Its your bag so if you want to switch go ahead but I know Matty O throws the Kristin Graces and he throws very far. Granted he throws those on turn over or hyzer flip lines but they’re still good discs for advanced players.
Great video idea! Form lookin nice and smooth too!
I've always wanted to see a review on these. THANK YOU
I don’t know about halos, but there are a number of discs from innova that I came to love and when I tried to replace them the new ones threw nothing like the old ones. I don’t bag innova anymore, I only bag stuff I can easily replace with standard consistent off-the-shelf models and plastics
I'm in the thick of form change like you too and get the feeling. My first tournament is tomorrow and feeling decent about it. I have developed tennis elbow so I get your issues...I'm around 400 consistent and can go like 450 on good shots. We just gotta keep going. I was like a 350 player 1 year ago, so its working! Also Graces FTW
The Jonesboro isn’t the 2022 run, it’s the same as the 2021 run. The 2022 is very different.
Love your putting! It’s all about getting it in the basket! Best of luck to you! Can’t wait to see you on your soon!
Tour*
Pretty sure the Jonesboro commemorative destroyers were printed on ‘21 halo destroyers. I could be wrong but none of the ‘22s had a white base.
2021 can definitely handle any headwind on tour for a good 6 months before it starts beating in, unless you are just murdering trees
Great review. Please get a hold of a charger, I think it would be a great driver for you.
The Destroyer has been my go to since I started playing! I need to grab a couple newer ones to compare them though.
Yo. Good video. Also: youre doing good! This stuff takes time.
could not have come at a better time. i was looking to buy a calvin destroyer very soon but wanted to know what run and if they differed
Just off the title , I’m lovin the concept
Would've liked to have seen some forehand throws with these discs for comparison (personally) but still good content nonetheless.
What’s going to be your home course in Denver?
use the gummier one for colder weather
If you want a super over stable, high speed driver, I recommend trying the nuke OS. I use that for 30 mph head wind, and it stays true. We have relatively comparable arm, speed, and distance… I throw my star destroyers on flat ground about 450 to 475.
Calvin among many others have said it depends on color. I would get the same colors from different years to compare
I thought the main critique was about consistency *within* runs, not between them?
Keep up the diversity. Makes your channel addictive
if you go back and watch your throws when you were trying to get them flat you will notice that on pull backs that were closer to chest height resulted in a flater release, when your pull back is lower the natural tendency of your shoulder is to swing in a hyzer.
I've noticed this (slightly) but it's a great cue to remind myself. Thank you!
Garrett Gurthie S-Blend Emperor.
You're welcome in advance!
Don't know if you have thrown Kastaplast Grym X? I think you would really like it :)
2021 Heimburg Halo Destroyer is my most dependable disc. Beats in pretty quick & as it does it loses just enough over stability & still fights the wind great. 2022 seems a lil stiffer out of the box & flies more over stable than the 2021 for me. 2022 is my heavy wind disc. Gota try the 2023.
What brand of shorts are you wearing?
just cheap amazon ones
I'd be interested to see how those would stack compare flight wise to my AJ Destroyer
I have 2 2022 Calvin destroyers, the white rim version was more overstable than those brand new now it’s beat into my bomber disc. I also throw distance forehand so that could make a difference.
Hey, the Jonesboro run is still a 2021 based calvin destroyer, even though it came out in 2022
Maybe an Axiom Defy or DD3 would give you something slightly more stable, if you feel you need it. I find discmania and MVP/Axiom to be a bit more stable for me than the numbers suggest, but it could just be my noodle arm 😂
2:13 Damn didn’t have to come after us noodle arms 😔
why i dont like the destroyer for max distance or headwind bcuz the wind turns it to anhyzer then it will never come out of that anny and just proceed to glide 200 ft to the right of where you wanna be every time.. i want to find disc similar to destroyer but instead of -1 turn i wanna find something -.05 turn like the Nuetron Panic for example i think this can be put on anhyzer and it wont hold that turn too long or get turned over into headwinds but still not be too overstable it wont go anywhere etc.
The only thing that matters with destroyers or any high speed drivers for that matter is first the weight and second the shape of the underside of the rim. Typically the more curve on the underside the more stable it will be. I look for an almost flat underside and you'll get that less stable flight path.
Snag some emperors. Little bit less stable but absolutely hold in the wind!
5:39 seems like youre lined up for a straight shot then you hold it forever and release it way to the right even thought your body is lined up for a straight shot making it look like a grip lock or something
The stiff black or blue rim stock run 2022’s are actually pretty straight for a destroyer
What part of Denver you moving to? I’m sure we’ll run into each other at some point!
Destroyers have never been consistent. But still my favorite disc because of the feel in the hand and versatility of the disc
Watch the "Is That Good?" (Eric Oakley) episode of the Calvin Detroyers from last year. I believe the black rims were the "straighter" 2022's while the white and yellow rims were the "beefy" ones.
also, if you want some diff flights, destroyers come in so many diff weights.. try messing with the weights to find your favorite.
The stock 22 Calvin Destroyers, depending on their color, have different stability. If I remember correctly Calvin said the Pink/White ones were the most Beefy of all destroyers
I think he mentions the chartreuse ones were beef also in the Eric Oakley “is it good” video
The pink ones are crazy stable
You need one of those 23 Philo Destroyers brotha.
The flow throws like a more stable grace with my experience. May be worth the try.
That black Calvin is a ‘21. All ‘22’s had colored flight plates.
I think that the bottom stamp Jonesboro halo destroyers are actually extra 2021 runs that they had not stamped yet
I typed up a big long essay, but then decided it wasn't worth arguing with random people on the internet....
Oh bless his heart, claiming he only threw those about 340-360. Makine us feel human too.
‘I am sorry I am a noodle arm, maybe I can get the destroy 400 ft’
Yeah, who is going to tell him he’s throwing farther than just about every casual I ever met
halo destroyers especially the calvins handle OAT really well and fight back better with more revs. IMO
I do wonder if there is another disc that fits well in this slot. You could be the first to find.
Interesting because I have all three and the 21 version for me is by far the most gummiest.
I have not tried the 23 Calvin halo destroyers but in my experience the 21 (blue with green rim) was definitely more understable than my 22 (pink with blue rim)
When you get the arm speed up try the halo star boss. I don't have huge hands either but they're quite comfortable. Or try the new discraft venom when it comes out the 10th
Interesting. The inconsistency of Innova Destroyers will always surprise me.
Way too beefy for most of us for sure, I'm loving the S Line DD3 for that OS DD slot personally, it's more like a beat in destroyer which is probably best for anybody not throwing 400+.
You can get 400 if you throw Zues and Hades. We have exact same Back hand arm speed. But I do throw 375-400 on 4 hand with destroyers
On Back hand I throw destroyers just like you did on the hole you played. Ripped hard low and flat
It's probably the same mold and same plastic - so if they're different it might be more about the plastic aging. Some plastics shrink or become less plastic (flexible) over time faster than others. Less flexible / more brittle would make discs more stable. This would normally be overshadowed by wear, but when comparing UNUSED discs from years ago, this effect could be really pronounced.
Would also be a bit more "scientific" if you tried these blind (not knowing which was which) and tried like 5 throws per disc at least.
You could grab a dozen star Destroyers of varying runs and find maybe 4-5 that are really good fliers. The others will likely be too overstable and lack glide. That said, I've seen the most variance in stock runs of star Destroyers. You get overall more consistency among tour series runs. The plastic is just way better quality. I've only thrown 1 of the 3 discs profiled in this vid, a '21 Heimberg. Big dome, and VERY overstable.
I think these different runs were produced with a different end product in mind
Big Jerm Halo Boss if you want more beef
totally, just don't know if I'll have more release issues with the rim size. Definitely want to try it out though!
True! Soo much dome!
If you’re looking for utility, if you can find a James Proctor Max that’s a good one 11/3/0/5
Matty O crushes graces farther than you probably ever will ever get a destroyer… roll tide
I have 3 halo discs. All of them have completely different feels. One is stiffer than opto x while another is gummy.
Those aren’t the 2022 Calvins destroyers… those are stock run halo destroyers from 2022 they put a commemorative stamp on it. 2022s Calvin’s all had pink flight plates
White rim/pink center 2022 vinny destroyers are crazy overstable
Stability changes a lot based off of color alone. Black rim 2021 vs blue rim 2021 is the same disc in name and mold, but not in stability
The inconsistent rumors are by players who are mid 950 rated and have no idea what they're doing half of the time.
Destroyers would be 13 speeds by any other manufacturers standards fyi. 2.3 cm rim.
You should try fuzion enforcer and maybe compare it to lucid. The lucid chameleon 2021 handeye ones are silly overstable
I have a hand eye hatchet that I absolutely hate lol. I keep it in the bag so my discs don flop around. It's like green with the hand eye logo so it's cool but a terrible disc for my form.
Of you were to buy 20 of the same mold, color and weight of a destroyer maybe two of them will fly exactly the same. Maybe. Your better off buying 5 and testing them out take the two that best suits your style of throwing.
Why not go with an Enforcer, if you're looking for just a wind fighter?
my stiffer discs are more understable then my gumby discs , my gumby discs are meat hooks
i mean.. if you want overstable get a boss. if you want stable fun get an air boss.
if you want a super over stable destroyer then you want a champion destroyer bcuz innova always makes their champions a bit more overstable so yeah try that out
another great video, but you seem to be lacking confidence in yourself. great content. Stay positive.
Pretty sure the color of the rim matters for Calvin’s destroyers…
Buy a beat up destroyer out of a used section. They’re so money
I like the conceot BUT you chose tour series discs, which are selected from the ones that come out especially well from the mold. I feel like you should just get regular runs of a disc for this.
That black one is the 2021 run not the 2022
Also, the blue and pink 2022s are bombers for people with 350-400 power. I could get one to push to 430ish. The 2021 run are all nice and beefy. Haven’t thrown the 2023 yet. The white and pink 2022 are supposed to be very stable as well
The 2021 is more overstable than any Xcal I've ever tossed
IMO 1st run halo destroyers are the best
or embossed 4x paul destroyer
