- Welcome to an in depth discussion of the equipment needed to troll for walleye using inline planer boards, and how to find the right equipment on a budget. We will also be unboxing an Okuma Magda Pro MA 15 DX line counter reel. We will compare the Off Shore planer boards to the Church Tackle Walleye boards and the Yellow Bird Planer Boards.

Such a helpful video, thank you. Just ordered an Okuma 15 DX for my 8'6 Fenwick Trolling rod and a couple of Yellow Bird Planer Boards....
Glad it helped! Tight lines! Thanks for watching.
Thanks
Thanks for watching, friend!
Wow, I like your thoughtful deliberate explanation. We can see you thinking before you speak. A+++
Thanks Bill! I make every effort to give my completely honest review/opinions of the products that I highlight. I learned to fish at a time, when good information was difficult to come by, and I love to share as much insight that I can on TJO. I want viewers to feel that TJO offers good information, that adds value to their fishing experience, while offering a spiritual insight, that will help men grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ!
God Bless, my Friend!
I should add, Bill, that my opinion of planer boards has been changing over the past couple of seasons, as I have done a bit more trolling, and I will shoot an updated video this summer, going into more detail on boards.
thanks for sharing your experience.
Truly is my pleasure. Thanks for the support!
Can you recommend a chart, etc when trolling with crawler harness and planer boards. Want to troll with crawler harness and planer board only. Is there a chart to go by for line out, speed etc. Also do I need inline weight when trolling with harness and board or can I do without. Thanks for your past help in the past.
You will definitely need to use some method of weighting down you harnesses: either inline weights, or small dipsie divers, or tadpole divers (it is all just personal preference) . The chart that I use is the Precision Trolling App.
Team Jesus Outdoors
Thanks again. Just downloaded loaded app. I don’t see harnesses , just baits. But I’ll look into the app some more. 👍
@@raff9938 you wont find harnesses, but you will find dipsies, tadpoles and inline weights
Team Jesus Outdoors 👍 I’ve got more great advice from you channel than any other channel. 🙏🏻
Always happy to help, my friend!
What line do you recommend when trolling for walleye on river and lake? And would I be using the same line when trolling with bottom bouncers.
When I am pulling bottom bouncers in the river, I have been using 20 or 30 pound braid (one of my fav. reels for this is my KastKing Rover size 40), and for most other trolling applications I use 10 pound Berkley Big Game on my line counters.
Thanks you, can I use a heavier line other than 10lbs so I can use for both?
Great question Raff! The primary reason why I always spool my line counter reels with 10 pound test (or at least the diameter of 10 pound test) is because whatever dive chart you use, they almost all use 10 pound big game as the standard trolling line. So for example: I use the Precision Trolling App, for my dive charts, and they use 10 pound berkley big game as the standard. That is why I have dedicated reels for bottom bouncing. If you cannot afford to have dedicated reels for both applications, then I would recommend just using the 10 pound mono for your bottom bouncing also.
Team Jesus Outdoors Thanks for all your help.
It truly is my pleasure!
Looks like a good arsenal of tackle to choose from. I purchased a couple of small Yellow Birds to pull behind my kayak. Not used yet.
Are they the ones with the tattle flag kit?
Team Jesus Outdoors No. They are a couple of rejects I bought from them for $10 each.
They just have the snap on one side and a plastic clip on the "steering arm"? on the other end.
Bummer, the tattle flag is super helpful to detect light bites and/or grass on your bait.
Maybe I will buy a couple of those with flaws for $10. LOL God Bless
What species of fish are you chasing using your boards?
I use those Offshore boards when striper fishing....they are great....but expensive compared to what they used to be
Do you troll for Spring Stripers in the creek arms?
Yeah, they move up the rivers and creeks in the early spring to spawn
Yes Sir, I have fished Cumberland Lake, KY in the Spring for Stripers, pulling live shad on a treble hook behind inline boards. What a HOOT that is!
When I fished them, I used the Church Tackle boards, and they worked well.
Same here, but I use circle hooks...it is definitely a blast
Thanks for that information
I hope it was useful. Like Rush mentioned earlier, Planer Boards can seem intimidating, because they seem a bit confusing.
Just looking at this Okuma Magda Pro reel today. Do you think the 15 is big enough or the 20. Just be fishing in the Detroit River and north channel. Love your channel. Have learned a lot
Thanks for watching and supporting the channel, Raff! The 15 sized reel is only slightly smaller than the 20, should be plenty big enough, but if you are only fishing the Rivers, do you really need the line counter reels?
Thanks, don’t you think I need a line counter when using planer boards with crawler harnesses. Or trolling with crankbaits. I will be trolling in the main lake also. I’m new to fishing for walleye. So I’ll take any advice you have. 👍
If using planer boards than absolutely. When I fish the river with crawler harnesses, I dont use boards, and i typically dont use line counters, because it's easy to find bottom with bottom bouncers. I also use braid, when bottom bouncing, so i have dedicated reels for bottom bouncers. But if you need to buy gear to do both, then line counters make sense, for sure.
Looks like a pretty nice set up!
Let me first say that I am in no way a Walleye Pro. I have been chasing walleye, on and off, for the better part of the last 23 years, but planer board trolling has never been one of my strong suites. Only for the past couple of years have a made a more intentional effort to spend more time trolling for walleye. Probably 10 or more years ago, I sold a lot of my walleye trolling gear. Now I am replacing much of that gear.
@@TeamJesusOutdoors planner boards have always confused me haha
You are not alone my friend! Over the years, I too have been confused by all of the differing opinions concerning planer boards. I have used all three of the brands mentioned in the video, as well as some lesser known boards, not mentioned, and my conclusion (as stated in the vid) is that you can get the job done with most of the boards on the market. Honestly most boards require some modifications, right out of the pack. One of the reason that I plugged the Yellow Bird boards is that you can buy them (at under $25 bucks) and fish them just as they come. The Off Shore boards, with the tattle flag kits are probably the best boards on the market, but holy smokes: at over $50 bucks a pop, who can afford them??? LOL
Another consideration is what species of fish you are chasing! When I use boards for Musky and Striper fishing, I don't necessarily see a need for the tattle flags. These big fish take the boards down, like a bass on a bobber!
I'm getting more years out of Diawa Accudepth 27lc over the Okumas.
I had a couple of Diawas back in the day, but I sold em. So you feel like they are more durable?
I just looked at one of your vids, and it looks like you run Off Shore boards.
I do think they have a better line counter button, a little nicer handles too. I'm pretty rough on stuff and I burned through a lot of okumas. The Diawas are lasting me longer so far. But I beleive are going to run 10-15 dollars more than the equivalent okuma. But in the end its still a 50 dollar trolling reel so after 5 years and 1000s of hours, I still can find failure points in them.
Yes I do. Funny thing here..sitting next to me on the floor are three garage-sale find Church boards, 2 of them are Gary Roachs :) I might use them for some application in the future. I started out trolling with yellow birds out of my first 14ft boat too.
I am glad you chimed in. This is exactly the type of dialogue that I hoped would ensue. Good stuff!
Awesome video as always, nice set up!Thanks for sharing
Thanks Marshall!
I'm about 90% sure the cabela's branded rod holders are made by scotty. At least the quick draw model. Have a couple of scotty and cabelas and I can't tell them apart except for the name plate. Unfortunately it looks like they are discontinued now.
I believe that you are correct. TheCabellas brand rod holders are interchangeable with Scotty products.
Thanks for watching and supporting TJO
Thanks for the great information, I’m just getting into trolling and boating for that matter, appreciate all your doing and what you stand for!!!
Thank you my friend! I do this because I love it! I mean LOVE IT! I love being on the water, prepping to be on the water, and even sharing the stories that are made on the water, so thank you for watching and supporting!
Hi I’m watching this video and wanted to give you some support. Keep it up my friend.🇺🇸
Thank you Sir!
I fish on the flats on the St. Louis Bay near Duluth in the spring. My trolling set up is 8 foot spinning combos. I also use Church TX 12 planer boards. Very cheap and has worked very well so far.
I used to use yellow birds but they didn’t troll very well at slow speeds for crawler harnesses. But I’m thinking maybe the new design and the smaller versions with the tattle flags might work pretty well.
I plan to do some experimenting this season with Yellow Birds and Off Shore boards, side by side.
@@TeamJesusOutdoors How'd that go?
@@jameyg1819 I had actually planned to do a follow up vid to answer this question, but 2020 has not gone as planned, for obvious reasons. In any case, I have switched over to Off Shore boards, as I have just found them to be clearly superior boards. Still hoping to produce that video. Maybe this fall.
Thanks for the tips. I'm just starting out trolling these tactics and have a reel and rod setup and holders. But I don't have any planer boards and you answered alot of questions for me about brands. I also run a 30dx for lead. Great reel for the money. But I paired it with a 7 ft okuma classic trolling rod and it's not terrible. I can't speak to planer board usage but it's not bad on either mono or lead. Just strictly a budget rod just like the reel.
I love the conversation this video has created. As a fishing community, we are all better off for this type of dialogue.
Tons of good walleye information in that video. Learned quite a bit from your video. That trolling app is cool too. I had no idea they even had that. Great job as always on the video. Tight lines from R & J Bass Fishing
Thanks Pal, that Precision Trolling App is super cool. It's a must have for trollers.
I am a Michigan boy now living near southern lakes in Tennessee. I never really mastered some of the trolling techniques while I was in the north and many don't utilize them to the same degree in the south. I would love to see some detailed videos about setting up trolling systems using in-line planer board, Dipsy Divers, etc. Very informative videos that are very helpful.
I thought that you TN boys just use a Carolina Rig for everything...LOL
How many of you guys are using online planner boards? Are you using tattle flags?
I think tattle flags are good for new anglers but if you are experienced with running boards you wont need a flag to tell you a fish is on.
How are you liking those Magda Pro MA 15 DX reels? I wonder how long they'll last. So people say the Magdas don't last long and that has me a little worried. Also, are you running 2 or 4?
I believe that I have a total of about 6 of the Madga Pro 15 reels, as well as a few 20 size reels and a couple of 30 size reels, which I have used for years for Musky fishing. My Magda pros have all held up really well. I have had some of them for more than 10 or 15 years. Now that being said, I probably troll (for Walleye) less than a dozen days per year.
Looks like you were on Belleville lake at the end. Hope you’re not eating the fish out of there 🤢
Very impressive my good man! I did in fact shoot some of that footage on Belleville. The trolling footage at the beginning of the video was shot on St. Clair. I was on Belleville shooting footage for another video, and decided to troll for a bit, because it has a good population of Walleye. Didn't keep any. Dang PFAS!
Team Jesus Outdoors it’s so sad our waterways are being poisoned, in this “pure” Michigan. I live right across the street from the Huron River and fish the DR and Erie bi-weekly if not weekly, just sad to see what’s happening lately
Figured you must be local to identify Bville, from what little footage there was of it. I live half way between Bville and the DR, we should hook up and fish.
