  • South Korea currently has two high-speed railway systems. One is called KTX (Korea Train eXpress), which is owned by the government and operated by Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL). Another high-speed railway system is called SRT (Super Rapid Train), this system is currently owned by Supreme Railways Corporation (SR Corp.) and it's a private enterprise.
Both KTX and SRT are operating on high-speed dedicated railway lines with maximum speed of 305 km/h (190 mph).
For most sections, the KTX and SRT are run on the same railway route, like: Gyeongbu High-Speed Railway (경부고속철도, 京釜高速線), Honam High-Speed Railway (호남고속철도, 湖南高速線) and others several routes with operating speeds higher than 200 km/h (125 mph).
SRT only has an independent route from the north of Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi-do (경기도 평택시, 京畿道 平澤市) to Suseo Station, Seoul (서울 강남구 수서역, 首爾 江南區 水西驛). This independent route is called Suseo-Pyeongtaek High- Speed Railway (수서평택고속선, 水西平澤高速線), with a length of 61 km, the route can also operate at a speed of 305 km/h (190 mph). Except for Suseo-Pyeongtaek High-Speed Railway, both SRT and KTX are operating on the same railway route.
    KTX currently has three trains, namely KTX-I (GTV-K), KTX-II (KTX-Sancheon) and KTX-Eum.
KTX-I adopts French TGV technology and is a train jointly developed by Alstom and Hyundai Rotem. The appearance of KTX-I is very similar to the SNCF TGV Réseau (TGV-R). It can almost be said that it is a train produced from the same mold. KTX-I is powered centralized train (push-pull train), it's consists of 18 carriages and one electric power locomotive (leading locomotive) at the head and tail. The number of cars in a train is 20.
KTX-II also known as the KTX-Sancheon (KTX-산천, KTX-山川), it's a high-speed train produced by Hyundai Rotem. Because this train still uses many French TGV technologies, so the appearance of KTX-II is very similar to TGV Duplex. KTX-II is powered centralized train (push-pull train), it's consists of 8 carriages and one electric power locomotive (leading locomotive) at the head and tail. The number of cars in a train is 10. The KTX-II can also connect two sets of trains into one train, making it 16 carriages and 4 electric power locomotives (leading locomotives), and bringing the total number of cars to 20.
KTX also has another train called KTX-Eum (KTX-이음). The operation mode of this train is between high-speed railway and traditional railway. The commercial operation speed is 260 km/h (162 mph). KTX-Eum is powered distributed train (electric multiple unit train, EMU train) and 6 carriages per trainset.
SRT currently has one train, namely KTX-II (KTX-Sancheon), but SRT train has completely different exterior colors and interior configurations. Therefore, SRT train can be regarded as different trains from KTX-II.
SRT train is powered centralized train (push-pull train), it's consists of 8 carriages and one electric power locomotive (leading locomotive) at the head and tail. The number of cars in a train is 10. The SRT train can also connect two sets of trains into one train, making it 16 carriages and 4 electric power locomotives (leading locomotives), and bringing the total number of cars to 20.
This video records the SRT operating (including: departing, arriving and high speed passing) at Cheonan-Asan Station (천안아산역, 天安牙山驛).
