  • This year Brick and I decided to take the more difficult route across the Admiralty Is. National Monument near Angoon, Alaska. It's approximately a 35-mile packrafting / hiking trek across 5 lakes, 4 portages and Mitchell Bay.
Along the way, things got more and more difficult as we ventured into the Path Less Traveled, (shelters were dilapidated, trails were barely visible, and in some areas, the trail wasn't marked at all.) The situation got so bad we had to decide whether to forge ahead and possibly get lost, or to risk going back and around, which would have made us a day late arriving at Angoon... Arriving a day late, and search parties would have been dispatched. So, we decided to forge through several miles of unmarked trail and got LOST!!
There is an easier, more common route, most people take across the Monument. (See my video from last year in this channel ‪@andy.engstrom‬ )

I don't understand why they do that with the trail boards. They are made to get wet, and be outside. There is no need to stack them inside the shelters.

Yes. I agree. That was the first sign that we were heading for trouble. Then, when we came across the conservation corps crew, they said we were the first people they had seen all summer.

I was on this trail crew. Being the boards need to be transported to the working site via our backs, it's not ideal for them to be wet as they will become significantly heavier. Also, continual bouts of wet-dry-wet-dry conditions cause the boards to deteriorate faster :)
