My friend works for United, and I am enrolled to fly standby with him. He flies free, and I have to pay a minimal fee. Does one get a refund for the price paid to get on standby if the flight is full and one cannot board? I'm planning to go to Hong Kong and want to see if it's possible to fly business/Polaris, but we are unsure if the business is full, if I automatically get to board on the economy... if I get refunded the difference, or do I need to purchase two standby tickets.

If you pay on CC you need to request a refund. If payroll deduct, then automatic. Good luck!
