- Fix your headliner on 2009 to 2016 Audi A4 or A5 B8 and B8.5
In this video I show the headliner removal, fabric recovering, and re-installation. I bought the headliner fabric from headlinermagic.net
The only tools you need are a T25 torx bit, a trim removal kit, and a right angle flat screwdriver or bent piece of metal to remove the grab handles.
2 yards of fabric, and 2 cans of adhesive and about 6 hours of project time to get it done over 2 days.

Here is another headliner video from Headliner Magic for 2012 Audi S4. Shows how to remove the handles better. ua-cam.com/video/7htYPYaHDno/v-deo.html
Its about the same but caution about the grab handles should be given. Do it wrong and the handles loose their spring action and they just hang there....useless.
Hi, Did those creases eventually iron out over time? Thank's.
@@WeveGotBush no, the crease are still there. If I do this on another car I will either pay to have it done or do it myself with black headliner fabric. Black doesn’t show the imperfections like light colors do!
Thanks for making this. Very well made, you understand how each little component comes apart. Without this video I would have taken twice as long being overly cautious as I try to take each piece apart, not being sure if it will break or not.
I know this is two years old, but I wanna say thank you so much for making this! I wasn't sure how to tackle this originally but your vid made it clear and easy to understand.
Glad it helped!
Hey man I appreciate you taking the time to do it, you absolutely right it's better to get someone to do it for you that's a professional, but I thank you for taking the time to do this video.
Thank you!! I am doing the same thing to my A4 and This answered all the questions I had!
Root cause: I've watched a few of these headliner repair videos and no one seems to mention the cause. Sure, there's age, but they all "seem" to start sagging where the sunroof drain holes are (2 in the front and 2 in the rear). From the videos I've seen, the leaks/sagging are not necessarily due to clogged drain holes, but due to the unions/joints failing in the drain line tubing. So, after I take care of the drain lines, then I'll repair the headlining. As always, thanks for a great video!
Well done! Thanks from Italy
Good job mate 👍👍😎
I know from experience Audi Headliners can be very time consuming process. The main focus is to use headliner materials with enough stretch to make sure it sticks around that sunglasses console.
Thanks for the how to, know I know what I'm in for. Thankf for taking the time to make it
Great vid. Way to solve your issues yourself. Always like watching your vids - a lot is always learned!
Thank you for this, Sir!
when trimming and folding over the edges did you put more glue on?
You’ve inspired me to drain/fill my diff fluids, but this, I don’t think I’d ever attempt this. Good work though
I just need to know how to remove my Audi A4 2007 rear dome light?
about to attempt this myself to turn my interior completely blacked out, did u unplug the car battery before this, worried about touching all the electronic components. thanks
I think i disconnected the battery at one point otherwise the dome lights would stay on.. Just make sure to not have the trunk latch shut after disconnecting.
@@CarsandCoding got all the electoral components out (didn’t even unplug battery all went fine) however i’m stuck on removing pillar B i’ve been pulling for over a hour any other tips on how to get them out?
@@jakehosford4138 at 7:26 in the video I show it. Pull the bottom out, then slide down.
@@CarsandCoding i been pulling they just keep going back into place😂
I'm actually surprised that handles are not held in place by screws.
Awesome video really big fan🔥🔥Bought my first car AUDI a4 2009, can you make a video of how to replace all the front lightbulbs
Nice job 👍
So what causes the headliner to sag like that? Florida heat? Mine is still perfect, but I'm up in New York where it's only hot n July and August.
Yes heat and humidity. Every car has a sagging headliner here after 10 years
great video mate!
may i ask how you removed the rear dome light housing?
cheersss
You do not need to remove it prior to bringing down the headliner. Once the headliner is out it is easy to remove the clips. I'm sure it can be done while in the car as well but its not necessary.
So i did this to my audi a4 b8 and I ended up breaking all 4 of my grab handles the plastic part just wouldnt come out and ended up snapping, I will be taking my headliner and pillars all disassembled to a shop for $150 to get done.
It is a tricky job, for sure. The handles are plentiful on EBay, hopefully you can find a replacement. If anyone is contemplating doing this and can get this done at a experienced shop for $500 or less I would recommend paying for it like I said in the video. I enjoyed doing it except for it was so hot in my garage that day.
Curious, are you able to remove all the pillars once the board is removed? I wanna change my beige interior headliner to black that would mean replacing the pillars also. And what is the length and width size you order since we have the same car?
Yes all the pillars are removable. The fabric is sold by the yard and you need 2 yards.
@@CarsandCoding ok thank you. Looks like A and C pillars are doable but B looks a little complicated to remove since the seat belt is in the way. Unless somehow you can remove the seatbelt?
@@NhatNguyen-xs7kl yes you can remove the seatbelt
Do you have a shop ? I have the same problem i need to fix it ,it’s the same exact car same interior, I’m in New York
Sorry, I am in Florida, but this is a very common repair and there are shops everywhere that do the work. Good luck!
Thank you
nice video, but you could have done better job on glueing the textile
Yes it was my first try! It is still looking good. The wrinkles never came out though. So not professional result but good enough for a 12 year old car
You should pay closer attention to how the grab handles go back in. You get it wrong and the spring action in the handle does not work or you break it and it never works again.
Details are everything.
Can you take a head liner off and put the same one back up? Or do you have to put a new one in?
Use the same one. Thats what I did. I just took one out at a salvage yard to figure out how to do it but I didnt use it.
Never use the same one, the foam has broken down waste of time, new cloth is like 80 bucks, why would you
Would this be similar to a 2010 Audi A5 coupe?
Looks like it
Same thing
Damn. That's a lot of work lol.
Might be harder to do on a 2 door like my b8.5 s5.
I hope mine doesnt say anytime soon lol
I would rather replace my turbo again than do this again. It is a pain! But cant have a sagging headliner! Like i said at the end, probably worth paying to have this done unless you have a day off work (which I did).
So my A4 is just sagging a little at the back. Is there a way to drop the back park and reattach with spray glue or similar. I am wondering if a small rapr can begone without removing the whole headliner.
All I can say to that is “good luck!” Sorry!
It's unsuccessful because the fabric has come away from the foam backing, when you apply adhesive it bleeds straight through the fabric leaving a huge noticeable stain.
New headliner fabric has the foam backing already attached to the fabric so when you apply the adhesive it is between the foam and headliner board.
@@rossn5186 Thanks got it. Any possibility of using two sided tape or am I just delaying the inevitable?
You could attempt double sided tape , but most likely won't stick to the foam as that is what has deteriorated resulting in the foam breaking down and "crumbling".
@@rossn5186mine is also sagging. Gonna use a new fabric any recommendations? I wanna go from grey to black but seems like a lot of work with the mirror and pillars to match.
So I’m going to assume that a4s that didn’t come with the rear seats being able to move down option will be impossible to do this?
Or just take out the rear seats and trunk liner?
There is also another way! You can put the front seats all the way flat and sneak it out the back door, watch this video on VW CC: ua-cam.com/video/Pcwjsio6xL8/v-deo.html
Cars and Coding oh interesting. Thanks for the vid. Hopefully my headliner does not come down!😂🤞
Don't all cars have folding rear seats these days?
Finally
It doesn't really look good unfortunately, the fabric throws way too many wrinkles. This could have been done better, I don't know how often you have done something like this. For the deepening, I'll give you a tip: put something like a beanbag on it. This is neither too light or too heavy to leave marks in the foam and smoothes in the recesses at the reading light on the driver and passenger side.
After one or two years, the fabric will come loose at this point and you will have to start all over again.
Furthermore, I am not a friend of spray glue, I recommend to apply the glue by means of a roller and then air it for 5-10 minutes, then put the fabric on top and smooth it with a clean roller.
Greetings
Pat
I agree with you, it didn’t turn out perfect and it was my first time ever doing it. For first time I like how it turned out. Beanbag tip sounds like a winner, thanks! I do these jobs myself for the experience and to help others do it better when they try. This is the UA-cam generation :)
@@CarsandCoding Hello, thank you for your reply. For the first time you can leave it, its acceptable, at least 2 years depending on the outside temperature you will be happy with it.
To be fair, the recesses and mounds are not easy to obtain especially for the handles and the reading lights. If you want to have a nice result you can usually plan a whole day. Enclosed you have a link to my gallery of my audi a4 b7. I had the headliner reupholstered 2 weeks ago, as well for the first time. The next week I get a VW Bora and a headliner from the Audi A4 B6. The headliner will be dark grey for the B6.

@@DarkSorrowDark_Sorrow Very good work! Yes I expect in two years i will need to do it again most likely. I will know how to do it better next time for sure. Thank you!
Damn that was a lotof work for not a great result. I guess you really need to stretch the fabric to the contours otherwise I wouldn't bother with it
Consider it a warning hahaha! Good luck! I probably wouldn’t do it again.
50/50 the roof drain tubes are plugged and the water caused the already old headliner to fail and droop.
No, I live in southwest florida where the heat and humidity makes all the headliners on pretty much all cars fall down at 10 years.
@@CarsandCoding ...well I found that the roof antenna was a little loose and water was coming thru. At the front...both drain tubes were loose and water was seeping past and over connector to drain hose. Silicone took care of all problems.
I got my headliner changed today (6/28/21)
It pour rain today afternoon, however, when I was checking the work and rubbing softly around the roof ,I noticed left side rear passenger side close to the triangle window really wet, i got stress because it was all wet that small area, I need some help how to check where is the leak before it gets worst
I just bought an A4 B7 with a sagging headliner. I didn't notice the water mark until I got the headliner out and there mark is right by the rear drain tube.
Thats what happened with mine.
That sucks to do
It really does. Such a mess getting the old glue off the headliner!
The worst one I ever seen😂😂😂
@@crownlife2663 thanks for watching! Please link to your video when you do yours so we can see how to properly do it 🙂 ❤️
This is the worst result i ever seen😂😂
You haven’t seen thumbtacks? Lol! This was my first attempt and it hasn’t fallen down yet. I call it a success. Is it better to have it professionally done? 100%
