    Two things really stood out to me in this episode. First, Peter Bourke as Sgt. Simon Varney did an excellent job! When the young sargeant shared his first theory with Comm.Dalgliesh l thought, "Hmm🤔, that is a *really* good theory"-- then remembered, it's PD James-- *of course* it will have excellent twists. Having read & watched both PD James & Ruth Rendell l should have remembered just how well they do that!!
    Happy to see Dalgleish put the kettle on and settle into partnering up with Varney for this series. Great pairing works well together.
    The second thing is pure nostalgia-- the set did not have to be designed per say by way of warehouse stored vintage pieces pulled out for period pieces. The background photos of Boy George & Princess Diana on the girl's wall were what you would have found on many young girls' walls back in 1985!!👍
    Slow-paced, yes, as some have said, lacking in blood, gore & violence (thank heavens), it flows nicely along like a canoe down a quiet river. I remember just how wonderful the Dalgleish mysteries were to cosy in with on Sunday afternoons way back then...sigh...☺️🇨🇦☘️

      Thank you for expressing so well what l feel. Very astute observations. I too was impressed with Peter Bourke’s Sgt.
      Varney. Don’t recall seeing him anywhere else so l researched a little and found an impressive resumé. But l also wish to see him elsewhere in my favorite mystery shows.
      Also, you’re“spot on” about the ending scene. It has both a cozy feel and the excitement of the chase! Reminds me of serials at Saturday matinées (17 cents) in the 1950s. But l don’t have to wait a week and BBC & ITV are so beyond the crude theater skills of those days…

    Always nice to Art Malik. He was great as Hari Kumar in "The Jewel in the Crown".

      My favorite of his roles. I still get a feeling after all these years when I am reminded of that series. Great musical intro as well.

    "You've achieved far too much", well I'm sure the writer thought so in their mind but it certainly wasn't shared with us in the script.

      Mj: I feel that way about most of P.D. James characters but I still like her novels and the T.V. series: The Murder Room, Cover Her Face, A Certain Justice, Shroud for a Nightingale, Death of an Expert Witness, Devices and Desires; my least favorite one was Original Sin and I was not too crazy about Death Comes to Pemberley but I read it because I like Pride and Prejudice. There are movie versions (or T.V.) of the ones I mentioned in UA-cam and I've read the novels. I can't remember anything else but then maybe I'm not giving you any information you already know.

    It is a bit on the slow side. But I like that they give an insight into the characters. A lot of programmes today are to rushed.

      @rayof 315 characterisation or wham/bam action. Me? I like a bit of character development. Love Wilfrid. He's SUCH an unlikeable, pious idiot.

    • @agathapoirot5373
      @agathapoirot5373 5 років тому +2

      @rayof 315 To use Jan Hall expression "wham/bam," If you read P.D. James novels they are not wham/bam type at all. There are many other crime series on UA-cam that might suit your taste. Just type mystery crime T.V. series USA or British or whatever language you prefer and you'll find it. If you see something that is divided into 6 parts, almost one hour each, it will not be wham/bam. I enjoy short crime mysteries myself, but I happen to like P.D. James as well. There is something for everyone on the Internet.

      @@janhall1641 I agree with you. I cannot stand Wilfrid. You find characters that are not flat /one dimension in P.D. James writings.

    What is someone with a heart problem doing there, running around? Why is Ursula with MS in a place where her room involved climbing stairs? Just asking.

      The girl with the heart issue, I was waiting for her to pass out from a darn heart attack the way she kept running everywhere 🤣. Ursula was just being tortured having to climb stairs, I felt bad for her.

    I agree that this story is too slow. Interestingly, the book was also criticized as being too slow and with a "lame" ending. I've always felt the characters aren't believable and this adaptation doesn't correct the problem.
