Its interesting to see people talking about costs in japan recently because of the recent inflation elsewhere. In particular how cheap the JPY is compared to USD at the moment. For example JYP was roughly 75-80 to 1 USD the first time I visited in 2010 - 2011. Now it's almost double that at 138 JPY to 1 USD.
My rent in NYC today is $2,200 USD for a 2 bedroom apartment in Brooklyn. Hearing $500/month rent in Tokyo had my jaw hit the floor...
You need to count in size and placement. If you want same size apartment as in Brooklyn or Queens (including same sound insulation) and same distance from center you are looking around 2 - 3k a month as well ... Takashii correct me if im wrong.
Japan is dealing with inflation too.
$2,200 for 2 bedroom In Brooklyn isn’t that bad, (depending where in Brooklyn of course). I pay $2,400 for 2 Bedroom in Seattle.
It's actually pretty good comparatively at the moment. Rents are starting to fall in my area again, though not anywhere near as fast as they shot up compared to the last few years.

I mean here in the suburbs of Saint Louis, MO you could probably get a 2 bedroom aparuto for probably half that cost of NYC.

Yeah one of the few that actually could hold a conversation, was pretty impressed but you could tell that she actually talks on regular basis with Japanese only speaker.

that's what a "little" Japanese looks like though; what you're seeing is the "fluency illusion." Because you're not fluent in Japanese, you _really_ don't know what good Japanese sounds like.
To be real critical:
1. her accent wasn't bad but it wasn't _good_, but better than a lot of learners
2. 自分を教えます is just flat out unnatural. 独学で勉強しています is a better way to express "I'm teaching myself/ I'm learning on my own."
3. そうのぉ、東京の友達は、英語が喋れる・あの上手英語です。で～もぉ、オサカァーに・・・あの彼らは、あの英語がちょっと弱いです。普通、日本語を・・その一緒にハナする

With a little bit of studying and more practice she can turn her broken Japanese into something great, but that takes a lot of effort and time to get to that level.

Takashi I'm so happy to see you covering this big issue, rents here in Lisbon, Portugal are skyrocketing a 2 bedroom apartment costs 12 to 1500€, eating out is about 14-20€ per person and groceries is about 20€ for 1 meal, it's mad and I'm shocked to see that Tokyo is so cheap compared to Lisbon. I really want to come to Japan and experience it myself
That`s insane! 1400 is what a 2 bed flat costs in East London and that is still on the cheap side. I am shocked that Lisbon would almost be just as expensive.
And the average salary is peanuts in Lisbon.

When I visited Tokyo 4 years ago I found eating out was really inexpensive. Food in general such as bentos and snacks from the grocery store or convenience store was reasonable and good quality. Transportation I thought was expensive but worth it because the trains are clean and always on time. Thanks for sharing. It's always nice to hear other peoples thoughts.

Takashi-San I think if you do a follow up you should ask the lovely people you interview how big their apartments are. A lot of those interviewed are in dorms or subsidized housing. Many people might not know how small Japanese apartments can be. Love the channel!

Long-term foreign resident in rural Japan here. I was interested to watch this video to see how prices in Tokyo compare with where I live in Mie prefecture. Interestingly, restaurant prices don’t sound much different than where I live. Rent is a little cheaper here…but not by much, at least if you live in an apartment. On the other hand, you don’t mind living in an old house that’s far away from a train station, you can get a decent sized place for 200$ (US) or less per month. As for locally grown vegetables or (sometimes) fruit, it’s super cheap here. The last point is about clothes. One interviewee mentioned a lack of ‘fast fashion’ here…which is funny to me because everyone I know here buys most of their clothes at Uniqlo and GU (cheap and cheaper)… department stores aren’t really a thing anymore! Maybe Mie people are just cheap..? 😆

Fruit is shockingly expensive. A small pack of green grapes at Kombini costs about 400 Yen ($3.40 or so) and you are getting a small handful, like literally 15 grapes. Meanwhile a 2lb bag of grapes in USA is $5 that lasts a week or more. But overall eating in Tokyo feels so much cheaper, no tipping, base price is lower etc. and imo quality of the food is much better than USA, at a lower price

@@GizmoSheep it’s the city (Tokyo). Going out to, say, Kawagoe and fruit was ridiculously cheap in comparison to city fruit.
And here is a female Japanese office worker (me) who haven’t bought any fruit for a month. I rarely go to the fruit section of a supermarket (It’s kind of torture for me. )
I’ve been to UK, by the way, when I was a college student and I used to buy a bag of apricots for lunch to save money there. You can’t do that here in Tokyo. It would be suicidal !

Cooking at home is much more affordable here. Fruit and vegetables are inexpensive and produced locally, or imported from neighbouring countries. I eat fruit and vegetables every day, with extreme variety, even in winter. Yeah, this part i definitely do not envy the japanese for..

I know that you Italians eat lots of tomatoes every day (I envy you! Tomatoes are quite expensive here).
I rarely buy fruit but I buy some vegetables and cook with them every day. I make my lunch (bento) every weekday to save money. (Actually I’m eating obento right now at the cafeteria. It’s lunchtime here in Tokyo now.)🙂
A studio apartment where I live is about $1,600. Upgrade to a 1BR apartment, and you are looking at about $2,200.
A cheeseburger is between $18-$22. Fruits and vegetables are plentiful and not very expensive. I can get a pound of organic strawberries for $4 or a whole bag of organic apples for $5 or $6. You can actually get a lot of fruits and vegetables for free because so many people have gardens and have extra to share.
Man, I miss Japan so much the place is fantastic. I was there two weeks ago but feels like it's been a year. Definitely returning next year, maybe this time to Osaka instead of Tokyo.

@@hishamabdinur9111 Everything for about a week of stay cost me about $1800 USD including the flight, hotel, food, gifts, transit, cell service and some shopping. Granted, I got a really good deal on the flight and the hotel.

Japan is affordable to live in, especially if you live in the suburbs your money can go even further. It is also very convenience, I don't even take a bath at home (just go to the onsen every day), don't eat at home much, just eat at family restaurants super cheap and relaxing. I estimate I spend each day (onsen, restaurants, twice each day) around $45. As for rent, I have no rent, I have my own house.
Can a foreigner own a house in Japan?

Would be interesting if you interview Asians/Japanese who grew up in West and moved to Japan. Grew up my in West/UK and getting tired of living in EU and would like to live in SE Asia (I could potentially relocate to Tokyo for work)
The social intracacies as Westerners can be very direct (lived in Amsterdam for nearly a decade so can be very Dutch). Also with the Yen dropping, how it effected their life.
Kanji is most difficult to understand but it's also the most effective in summarising a lot of meaning in few or one character(s).

I live in Orlando, FL in the US and my rent alone is $2200 a month - and that's not the most expensive rent! I would like to move to a better neighborhood in Orlando, but I would have to scale down from a 2 bedroom apartment to a 1 bedroom so that I could try to pay less than $2500 a month. Tokyo is cheap compared to the US. But it sounds like food (at least fruit and vegetables) costs less in the US. And living in Florida you basically have to have a car, so there's the monthly car payment, the cost of gas and insurance, and maintenance costs. It is not cheap to live in the US at all.

It's too damn expensive, and Orlando it's not even comparable to a city like Tokyo, almost in every aspect Tokyo is more developed, only fruits are more expensive in Tokyo, but eating out and transportation I think is reasonable for the quality, also wages are decent, overall I think living in Tokyo is really worth it.
I am also in Orlando! Agreed that unfortunately this city is simply getting more expensive each year. Traffic is getting worse, as well as crime. Inflation obviously hit food and gas big time. Pretty crazy to see how housing isn't getting easier. And this is Orlando! A mid-sized city.

If it sounds expensive I wonder where you live? Japans Costs are waaaay lower than where I live. Even our fruit is more expensive than what they mentioned. You can buy 1 small avocado for almost 2 euros
I've been following japanese prices since 15+years, and it's always been relatively cheaper than most western countries. Apart from absurd vegetables/fruit prices, everything else is pretty cheap, especially accomodation, eating out. Pubblic transport is also cheap, considering the quality you get. For example, in US on average the cost of living is outrageously high, and the life quality is incredibly low compared to Japan. I would say the expenses in Japan are somewhat similar to my home country, which is Italy.
Nah I find it extremely cheap, $300 cant even get you a room here. Its insanely cheap compared to living in the US.
i spend $1500 for a studio apartment in not even an nice area in san diego, Its way cheaper in Japan and its a pain to get around without a car
Relative to where?
After a couple semesters of Japanese and visiting Japan I've come to the conclusion that learning as many kanji as possible is important for living in Japan. There is a lot of English on signs in Tokyo, but in rural Hokkaido not nearly as much, and kanji is an integral part of the written language. There is a lot you cannot read if you don't understand the kanji.
Very interesting. Amazing to think that Tokyo is the most expensive city too. Over here in Miami Florida the rent is pretty much a guaranteed $1800/month, and eating out you would definitely be spending more than $7-$10 quite often, so I guess that's kind of similar. I would be interested in seeing how jobs pay in Japan too, since maybe the cost of living is low to match the pay.
Living in Tokyo is fine, but it is important to know about and prepare for the risk of future earthquakes that are expected to occur directly under the Tokyo metropolitan area.
300-500$ rent is really good wen you compare to the other big cities across the world where rent is upwards of 1500$

I used to live in a 1LDK, brand new, within 20 minutes of Shinjuku Station for about 110,000 yen, which I always thought was a great deal.
I now live in Kanagawa and rent is cheaper, but not much.

I live in northeast PA. And the rent for an apartment is $750-$1300 alone. In big cities you can spend up to $4000 a month. (NY city etc.) That will include water lol then you have to pay gas, electric, garbage stickers(or special garbage bags), car note, insurance, gas for vehicle, inspection yearly, cellphone, internet/cable, and then food. It seems way cheaper to live in japan than the U.S. wow 😮

Perth Australia for comparison - Here rent would set you back around $2000 AUD p/m and that's for something bang average. $3000 for a proper home with above average finishes/location. KFC/Maccas large meal $13. Kebab $14. Pizza $22. Average restaurant dining $30-50 per person. Most expensive things here are services such as hiring a plumber/electrician/chiropractor etc average cost is $150-200+ per hour.
Japan is cheaper compared to my country, ramen usually costs 11$ and above, and renting around 5000$ 🥲 not to mention that we pay gas which 25$ every two days

Cost of living is considerably cheaper than life in a mid-sized town in America. $500 for rent as a single and very affordable to eat out, that's a bargain.
In Japan, we have a culture of bringing foods as the gift, and even if you don't buy expensive fruits, snacks, meat or fish for yourself, you probably customary buy that expensive gift foods, and give to your friends, relatives, other family members, colleagues at your workplaces or clients. This custom makes gift foods pretty much expensive, which have very good apperances to apeal your precious persons.
I live in Vancouver, Canada and it is so expensive here, only the rent is $CAD 1900 for 2 bedrooms apartment 🥹 Moving to Tokyo could be a good idea. I am visiting Japan next fall, I can't wait!

Comparing these prices to Cairo, Egypt, it needs only 200$ to live in 3-room apartment which makes it much cheaper than Japan, vegetables and fruits are really much cheaper. However, transportation are cheap if you use public transportation which is available everywhere and all the time.
Yeah, but you need to account for the fact that Japan is one of the most developed countries in the world, with highest standards of living, almost no crime, and well, many other features not even the best european countries have. I mean, you can't really compare it to Egypt in any way.

Cairo is fairly good though, spare the areas that were illegally built during the 70s, which are being removed now.
Tokyo is cheap compared to equally or more developed cities like NYC, Dublin, Singapore, London and Scandinavian capitals, but is also expensive compared to equally or more developed cities like Dubai, Doha, Istanbul, KL, Shanghai and Bangkok.

That's not bad. I live in a small university town in California, population is about 25,000 people. I pay $1200 on rent per month but I live alone in a 2 bedroom 1 bath unit. My old place was only one bedroom and it was running $900. I spend $275 on groceries a month and anywhere between $30-200 on electricity and gas.

How much is medical care in Japan? Do foreigners buy a special type of health insurance? Perhaps at some future date Takashi can add this question to your interviews.
All of us are having compulsory medical insurance here. We do need to pay 30% of total medical bills (including price of medicines and others). This insurance is non-negotiable and you have to pay the premium every month.

It's cheaper in Tokyo than in San Jose, California. Average rent 1 bed room is $2500. 2 bed room more than $3000. A bow of Ramen cost $16-$20.

He told us the rental every month that left us speechless. $2,500 is too much!!!
Just to rent a small cheap oldfashioned flat in Dublin in Ireland is 1200 -1500 USD. Not mentioning that some areas are not safe after 11PM, like District 1. Food expensive and communal charges expensive, especially during winter when rainy and very windy. So the modern organised, safe Japan is cheaper to live.

$1500 is so cheap compared to the states .. our rent recently in most states for a 1 bedroom in the city is about $1500+ upwards to $2k
When I was in Japan I couldn’t find any Muslim girls in Tokyo that was the city I was in I think this guy made his video interview for this video in Tokyo I saw the entire city of Tokyo before I left Japan
A bowl of ramen cost $16 here in San Diego, a two bedroom apartment you are paying in between $2000-$3000. But it is cheaper to cook in the US than to eat out...if you know how to cook.

haha yeah im in San Diego as well. Convoy area/Mira Mesa are good for Ramen but it's definitely twice the price of Japan. Rent is crazy here too, we have a 3 bedroom townhome for a little over $3k.

Compared to Europe, it’s cheap. Living in Munich and happy to leave this expensive place soon.
If u ask ASEAN people, for sure Japan cost its expensive. I was know how much expansive live in Tokyo specially live in Minato as Indonesian and Muslim. But btw i was have great price when i live in there for service apartment, 70% cheap then after i check again on application

Yeah, why are fruits so expensive here? 😂 I used to eat lots of fruits every day, all day long, now I only eat bananas and maybe pineapples sometimes. I don't even think about buying apples or strawberries 😂
I know, this makes me so sad.. like.. all the fruits are really good but.. I don't need the *best ever* tasting strawberries that also cost 600 yen for 12.. I just want a container of pretty good strawberries for $2.99 (or whatever the cheap price is in the US).
