Years ago there was a player with the last name Hu that was pronounced who. Vin Scully the legendary announcer for the Dodgers. hu got on First Base. vin Scully said finally in his lifetime he could say Hu (who) is on First.
The short emotional one is Lou Costello. Bud Abbott is the straight man. I've loved them for years. I also watched all of their movies but my favorite is Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein.
Part of the comedy of this skit is the subtle reference to the St Louis, Missouri team. In the skit its the fictional St Louis Wolves when in fact it was the St Louis Cardinals. In the 1930's the Cardinals had a team that was known as the Gashouse Gang. The nicknames on that team were plentiful, and they were also showmen along with being ballplayers. If you are interested in a little more about the background of this skit, look up the St Louis Cardinals Gashouse Gang and review the nicknames.
Abbott and Costello were brilliant. Their timing was impeccable and you should check out a couple of their other skits. They played off of each other perfectly and as an older woman, they were a big part of my childhood. RIP Lou and Bud! ♥️
This entire skit is a play on words. The system was adapted into a duo Japanese comedy act that is popular in Osaka. It’s a subject they pick, then the duo riff off it, it sometimes goes physical but usually it’s a retort and not actually painful. Anthony bourdain did a food crawl with a duo around Osaka’s food street.
4:03 Bud Abbott and Lou Costello worked long and hard on not just this routine, but several. Their success in their comedy was having a play on words. And they worked at it harder and longer than anyone. From when they worked together in Burlesque, to old-time radio shows, movies, and television, they had many great routines. Some of them are: - “Moby Dick” - “U-Drive” - “Loafing” - “7 x 13 = 28”
Word play sketches like this were very popular in voudeville. In the 1930 movie "Cracked Nuts" a comedy duo perform a sketch "what is next to which." Bud Abbott stated "Who's on First" was taken from an older skit "Who's the Boss." After Abbott and Costello formally teamed up in 1936, they continued to hone the skit.
1. Hu is on first 2. Watt is on second 3. I. Dunnough (or Ida Ngo, like Andy Ngo, the reporter) is on third 4. Tamara is the Pitcher 5. Wye is the Left Fielder As for the rest, the names are a stretch, but there are plenty of funny names they could've used ALL the "question" names, including Hu, Watt, Wen, Ware, Howe and Wye, and baseball players have also always had weird nicknames like Dizzy and Daffy Dean, as they explained in the opening of the script (Booby Barbar). There's an old joke that goes something like, "Did you hear about my new lawyer ??? He's from the law firm, Boyd, Dewey, Cheatham and Howe". Other examples are: 1. Dewey, Screwum (or Burnham), and Howe 2. Sue, Grabbit and Runne 3. Proba, Keister and Wince 4. Ditcher, Quick and Hyde
Abbott and Costello of lots of funny skits on UA-cam. I understand you probably won't do another reaction but their version of this bit at the retired actors' home is much better because it is after they had perfected the routine. I suggest you watch it. PS- I love the channel and appreciate the love you guys give America.
this routine is much older than Bugs Bunny. this routine was first done on the Kate Smith radio program in the spring of 1938. even then i believe the routine was handed down from Vaudeville. for me the humor comes from the fact that "who's on first" is both the question and the answer and the fact that neither one can see it.🤔
There is a theatre group out of Boston, if I recall. They redid the bit with a Shakespearean theme and it's really good, too. Just search Shakespeare who's on first and you'll find it.
They actually made cartoon out of these two guys. They were mice .These guys made movies in the 1940.s. Some with the Universal Studios monsters. There were tragedies in both these men's lives.
❤ There are several filmed versions of this skit from their movies live performances and TV. I claim this one from their movie NAUGHTY NINETIES as the best. They first performed this on radio in 1938. They are said to have performed it 15,000 times. You shouldn't need to rehearse anything you do that often. Their movies each have an exchange based on their repertoire. You might check out some of their movies. Not for us, for yourselves. If you feel compelled to have an audience, by all means, post it. The worst that could happen is it would suck. They do have some klinkers, but if you see them first, you won't know and won't really care. Those cartoon execs were no dummies. They knew what would show well. They even had cartoon characters based on this partnership. Oh! There is a skit from TVs Tonight Show with Johnny Carson as President Reagan performing an homage to this. I think it's the best non "Who's on first" out there.
Actually, this version is from the 1945 movie, THE NAUGHTY NINETIES. The fictional team is the St. Louis Wolves. But the year before, the St. Louis Cardinals and the St. Louis Browns played each other in the 1944 World Series. The Cardinals won the championship in six games. Now, the St. Louis Browns moved to Baltimore and became the Baltimore Orioles in the mid 1950's.
This is so famous that the two of them were conducted into the baseball hall of fame. Everyone knows this skit.
I think you meant “inducted”!
@kreg517 Maybe there was music playing when their names were called 😅😅😅😅.
Years ago there was a player with the last name Hu that was pronounced who. Vin Scully the legendary announcer for the Dodgers. hu got on First Base. vin Scully said finally in his lifetime he could say Hu (who) is on First.
I remember that well!
Wow, it blew right over her head!!
How embarrassing
These two are comedy legends. This is one of their best sketches.
They did this routine for several years. Back then Baseball Players sometimes had unusual names. Such as Dizzy Dean and his brother Daffy Dean.
I've listened to this routine since I was a teenager and I'm in my seventh decade. It is still funny.
Honest to goodness clean humor. Thanks for the review.

That was so funny! I haven't laughed that hard in years!
" 7 X 13 = 28 " is another great one to react to
This was a classic comedy bit that was hilarious 😂from 1953 there's a bit they did in front of a audience of retired actors
Abbott and Costello were brilliant. Their timing was impeccable and you should check out a couple of their other skits. They played off of each other perfectly and as an older woman, they were a big part of my childhood. RIP Lou and Bud! ♥️
They first performed this routine in 1939 I believe.
You have to watch abbott and costello in 13x7 is 28

Now THIS is how one does a reaction to the classic comedy routine of all time, "Who's On First?" 😂
I think this sketch flew past Fats :) At least it seemed that way.

This is from a movie. They considered this their best version of their skit.
Next up you need to do their 7 into 28, 13 times..
Naturally, *I don’t give a darn* is on *Short Stop.*
1. Hu is on first
2. Watt is on second
3. I. Dunnough (or Ida Ngo, like Andy Ngo, the reporter) is on third
4. Tamara is the Pitcher

was Fats lost for most of it? lol seemed like it
😂😂 she sure was
The audience was told not to laugh but you could a few who couldn't resist.
You have to listen to their " Loafer" skit, very funny also, they perfected their timing on Vaudeville circuit
Classic. This never gets old 😂😂😂
Ah, Looney Tunes was my favorite back in the day.
It looked like Fats was also lost 😂😅
Different shows they would change things up

I recommend watching Super 53 Raged Old Flag commercial
Turning out to be one of my favorite channels!
I understand you probably won't do another reaction but their version of this bit at the retired actors' home is much better because it is after they had perfected the routine. I suggest you watch it. PS- I love the channel and appreciate the love you guys give America.
I love these guys. They were clean funny not like today where everything has to be political or dirty. Thanks guys
Actually, "Rush Hour" was inspired by the movie "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World."
Theater of the absurd, but with baseball as the setting. It's a classic skit, but it's funnier when you're familiar with the game/positions.
this routine is much older than Bugs Bunny. this routine was first done on the Kate Smith radio program in the spring of 1938. even then i believe the routine was handed down from Vaudeville. for me the humor comes from the fact that "who's on first" is both the question and the answer and the fact that neither one can see it.🤔

They are the only non players inducted into the Baseball hall of fame
Them & John Fogerty are in the BHF⚾👍✌️
you found the best version. most reactors get a different version.
No you're wrong the timing is far better on the 1950's version.
@@hifijohn I'm not wrong. You're wrong.
This sounds like so many discussions I have had with my wife
6:15 is also applicable to your girlfriend. She's so lost.
Recommendation: Groucho and Chico Marx - Why a duck?
Sorry but the 1950's version is much funnier that's the one most react to.
naturally 7:54
You should react to george carlins baseball vs football, very funny.
Looney Tunes were from the 1930’s. Abbot and Costello were in the 1950’s!

This sketch was performed in 1945
I dont think she got it 😂
React to Robin Williams the history of golf and Richard Pryor on Mafia
4:10 does she get it? She looks and sounds confused lol
So we never got the answer. Who's on first?
Too bad she doesn't get it.
no not practice. they was doing the skit before tv when they was on radio
There's a better version of this
7 x 13 = 28.
They did mess up this act can you find them
Dude, please explain to your pretty lady that the names of the players are Who, What, Why, etc. Then have her watch it again.
