I fell asleep and when I woke up this video was on it was so captivating I kept watching and remembering 20 years ago when I was able to take a watercolor class. My favorite part of landscapes is drawing mountains. Thank you for touching my heart today. You have inspired me..Marcia in Modesto
I love painting landscapes with watercolor, but have never tried one with colored pencils. This video is very helpful. Thank you for sharing your expertise.
Even if one can't draw a simple house, it's been such a joy to watch this scene come to life! Very useful tips throughout, I'll make sure I apply every single one of them. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for these tips, they are very helpful. I really like how you successfully work with color pencils in landscape... I wished that you had some more detailed tutorials published. Great work.
I haven't really done much drawing and very little painting, but when I watch someone paint, it amazes me how they can get instant water just by bringing the color of the trees, for instance, straight down for reflection and then just softly go across the canvas with the brush!
You are an amazing artist. Thank you! I really appreciate the practical tips. I hope you are able to make a living from your art. It is always a shame when an excellent artist is forced to do more than art to make a living given their talents. Again thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much, Andrew. I really appreciate your encouraging words! Someday, I hope to be a full-time artist. But for now, I am happy to create when I am able to and share it with others.
Outstanding tutorial. I learned SO much!! In the beginning when you showed the landscape I literally thought you were showing the reference photo, I was like no way that's colored pencil! I would love to know what kind of erasers you were using for the clouds? And what kind of blending tools you use besides mineral spirits? The blending in this piece is like butter. Especially the sky. You are so incredibly talented, thank you so much for sharing your gift and using it to inspire and teach other artists!! 💜💜💜
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! As far as erasers go, I love the Faber-Castell perfection eraser. It's an eraser that comes in pencil form so that you can sharpen it to a point. I like the one that has the white eraser. As far as blending, other than OMS, I mostly just use the pencils to burnish and blend after I have lots of layers down. I will occasionally use a colorless blending pencil or marker as well. I have recently switched from using odorless mineral spirits to Holbein Meltz because it's less toxic. The meltz are like magic, though they don't work as well with Caran d' Ache products, but they work well with all the other brands of pencils I use. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
My biggest takeaway from this is to make the water and sky lighter the farther it is away. This is a great piece, by the way, Shana. I think painting reflections is such an important part of portraying clean still water, even if that just means you're taking the colors of things around the water in your piece and bringing them into the water.
Are you using a variety of pencil types? Just wondered what brand you are using. Yes the moisture and naturally occurring atmospheric impurities are in the air and the farther away you look, the thicker that visible layer becomes, which is why things fade & fuzz out. Its why the farther away a guy goes wearing a bright white shirt, the darker the shirt gets. If he is wearing black pants that hue actually gets lighter the farther away it goes. Beautiful work!
Yes, I did use a variety of pencils for this, I have all the materials listed and linked in the description of the video for reference! Thank you, I'm glad you like my work!
Hey Shana any chance you could do a landscape tutorial? Ive looked at your art and would really like to be able to draw grass and bushes and midground trees, kind like in your “the greatest mountain” or “summer in acadia”. Thank you
Hey there! Are you looking for a tutorial with colored pencil or with acrylic paint? The paintings you just mentioned are both acrylic paintings, but since you are commenting on this video, I feel like you are probably interested in a colored pencil tutorial? I just wanted to clarify. Thanks!
Oh wow, these were done in acrylics? No wonder i can’t imitate them 😩 You are correct, I was really hoping for a landscape tutorial from you with colored pencils. I also have watercolor pencils (derwent graphitint which i bought after watching your review) but Im having a really hard time with grass bushes and mid-distance trees in either graphitint or regular colored pencils. Can you please help?
@ludvanbeethoven1 lol yeah, the paintings you mentioned are acrylic paintings, I work in a bunch of different media! I do have a few landscape themed tutorials in my colored pencil playlist that might be of some help to you. I plan on doing more in the near future once I wrap up some of my current projects. I will see what I can come up with when it comes to long grass, bushes, and trees! In the meantime, here is my colored pencil playlist, in case you haven't seen my other videos on this subject! ua-cam.com/play/PL2QyxD4oF_jU_ZtJTd73Hccy6RmD1onY_.html&si=8aSydpyRk5hYa_ZT thank you for watching and for your suggestions!
Yes, they can be quite time consuming, but I love drawing landscapes! I'm a weirdo though, as I tend to like to draw things that a lot of other people don't lol.
I learned that the hard way! I built a set of Polychromos, to draw landscapes and when I made the first one, I was SO exited and disapointed in the same time, from the huge amount of time it takes. I literally draw each blade of grass, using thre different Greens. Only that, took me like 2 days, but in the end, it looked like real grass!! I don't recomend that method though, because it takes forever! There are other methoids, that make it look as good if not better, that also take much less time!
Could you please tell me what you use to make the extra white, like in the water for the clouds. I believe the pencil was red. Your work is incredible. Thank you
You are experienced and excellent with watercolor/Inktense pencils, too. When and why would you pick color pencils with OMS vs watercolor/Inktense pencils? Brighter colors because of the oil/wax based pigment medium? A decent color pencil artwork especially on sanded paper looking a bit like an oil painting?
Yeah, basically. I also enjoy the process with each medium, too. Sometimes, I am just in the mood to work with regular colored pencil. I feel like I have a bit more control with them for certain subjects. They also tend to be a bit more lightfast. A lot of watercolor pencils haven't been tested for lightfastness after they have been wet down, so it's hard to know how stable they will be over time.
This is very informative video and thanks for creating this and sharing. I would like to know for the right side of the trees there is a layer of water and then after a gap you have shown reflection. Any specific reason why reflection is not shown immediately as soon as water starts to show up below the trees.
Yes, that gap represents really fine surface ripples in the water that, from far away, take on a light version of the color of the sky and contain very little detail. The ripples, likely caused by a slight breeze brushing the surface of the water, interrupt that part of the reflection. Then where the water becomes calmer again, the reflection is allowed to continue.
One tip that has helped me in my artwork is when I use both wc and colored pencils and I love to get rid of the glare from the colored pencils I use the Caran ‘de ache waterbrush that has the fiber end on it. The odorless mineral spirits are double locked in the barrel of the syringe so it doesn’t leak in my bag or anywhere. I generally use very little in my waterbrush to rid the glare from the wax but it also blends. Since colored pencils are oil paint in a pencil using both mediums is so much fun and I love using the pencils to show the sun glare off another object which is hard to do in wc but not in oils. Anyways take my tip and run with it. I do full compositions and also blend wc with pastels, charcoal but started in watercolor, oils and acrylics. Landscapes are so much fun and have a blast. The waterbrush does not make any mess and it self cleans on a tissue. Using brushes is noxious and this stays capped. Best wishes 😊
That's how I use my odorless minerals spirits, too! I always put them in a waterbrush so I don't have them in an open container while working. Anytime you see me using a waterbrush in this video, I'm using OMS , and the times I'm using a regular brush, I am using water, haha! I have been doing it that way for years!
@@CautionArtistatPlay It definitely is the healthy way to go. I don’t know how long the CD water brush has been out but it’s been around 8 yrs if me saying goodbye to the dizzy fumes. Best wishes. I couldn’t do that because I teach and my health is bad but many seem to appreciate it. And it’s clean fun these days. Take care, I will check you out again soon. Beautiful work!
It definitely is much healthier, I have been doing it that way, probably since shortly after I started with CP in 2014. I recently have decided to try and make the switch to Zest-it or Holbein Meltz as healthier alternatives and will be using them in a waterbrush, too. It is nice to be in touch with other artists and see different ways of doing things. That's why I love UA-cam so much! Thank you so much for watching and for the chat!
Those are far off surface waves that break up the reflection. There was either a very slight breeze that had gone through or possibly a boat that had just gone through before the reference photo was taken. They are far enough away that they lack any detail and just reflect some light.
Water doesn't blend regular colored pencils, regular colored pencils are wax and oil based so they repel water. If you want to be able to blend with water, I recommend getting watercolor pencils. 🙂
Hello there, Thanks for watching! I didn't use any one color for the sky, or trees, or water. Each of these components required multiple colors to complete. It has been so long since I created this, and I used so many brands of colored pencils that I don't remember which specific colors were used in this piece. I am not typically someone who pays close attention to color name to begin with, I just go by sight. My best guess for the sky is a lot of cobalt blues, maybe some light phthalo blues, and light turquoise or cyan. And then darker variations of those for the water, with maybe some ultramarine. There were a lot of dark greens for the trees. I also used a lot of the Derwent Drawing Chinese White throughout the piece. I can't really remember which brand of pencil I used where. But I think you mentioned in another comment that you use Polychromos, and there should be colors in that line that come close to the colors I just described. I hope this helps!
@@CautionArtistatPlay Thank you very much! I've found most of the pencils you used, especially that dark Green, you used on the reflections of the trees on water,it's probably the Derwent Lightfast Forest!, so I ordered it! Thanks again for everything!
I haven't really ever done a desert scene. I'm mostly inspired by my own natural surroundings, and I live in Maine, so there is not much desert inspiration here, lol.
Thank you Julie! Yes, I use OMS in the water pen! I blend a bit with the brush and let the OMS dry a bit before I use the sofft tool, so it doesn't lift or get too streaky. It works best when there is already a lot of layers on the paper.
WONDERFUL! Are you using a waterbrush to apply OMS? Odorless spirits still give off vapors, so does the brush seal enough to prevent vapors when not actively in use?
Yes! I kept the cap on when it wasn't in use and didn't experience any leaking. I found it to be much better than working from an open container. It's so much more contained, even with its lid off, then it is when you are opening and closing a larger container of it between use. That being said, this an older video of mine, and I have since switched to Zest-it pencil blend and Holbein Meltz for blending colored pencil, because I am not a fan of the harmful vapors OMS gives off, even though I was always careful with it.
My favorite white pencil to use is the Derwent Lightfast Chinese White. It's really opaque and goes over things well. Holbeins soft white pencil is fantastic as well. If those don't do the trick, then I recommend using the Brush and Pencil Touch Up Texture and Titanium White powder mixed together. It can be painted on and its archival because it is made to be used with colored pencil, unlike gel pen and acrylic markers, which could chip off over time.
This is insane If you told me the water was a photo I'd believe you It's awesome how we see all this in nature every time we look at it but I think as an artist you can appreciate it more. Any time I look at a distant mountain I think "wow that's beautiful" but never think about how it takes on the color of the sky and there's no detail and all that. Obviously my eyes see it, but my brain doesn't care to take notice. I want to start drawing, and I dont know that this is a beginner's tutorial (or at least your artwork isn't) but I hope to start soon I know it's hard to quantify, but can you say how much is natural talent and how much is learned? Idk if that question even makes sense
Thank you so much!! I started drawing when I was really little, I always had a natural inclination for it, and started teaching myself when I was really young. And It has been a lifetime of hard work, observation, and learning for me. So, in a nutshell, it starts with passion and then takes commitment and the openness to learning new things. If you have the desire to draw, then you can absolutely learn to do so! It may not happen overnight. It takes a lot of patience, but art can be learned! I hope this helps! 💖
@@CautionArtistatPlay I'm 32 and trying to get into new things. My life is stale and I'm tired of the couch. I bought a colored pencils and pad set for $13 that will be here tomorrow, I did a little bit of sketching in just pencil and I think I can do it. I don't really know how to make things look good in one color like a pencil so I'm hoping the colored pencils will be more fun and keep me going
@vidowatcher91, we all have to start somewhere! Starting with regular pencil is good because it will get you used to looking at your values (how light or dark something is) and will give you a feel for mark making. A few things to keep in mind: not all colored pencils and paper are built the same. Some of the less expensive pencils tend to be less saturated and overly waxy, which can be hard when trying to build up to the color you are going for. Paper is also really important. You want something that has enough tooth so you can build layers, but not something too rough, because then you will be fighting the texture of the paper. So, keep that in mind when you start working in color. If you are not getting the saturation or coverage you are looming for, it might be the pencils or paper. Colored pencil is also a layering process and can take a lot of patience, but it's a very versatile medium once you get the hang of it!
@@CautionArtistatPlay ok this is hard!🤣 I tried for the first time tonight it felt like it would have taken me 3 hours to get the sky the way I wanted and I feel like I got no detail in ANYTHING! My drawing looks the same as it did when I was in 3rd grade, but I probably haven't tried since then so I guess that makes sense🤣 I didn't even want to finish it, I'll try again tomorrow, not sure if a continuation of the first drawing or starting over. As bad as it looks it was still relaxing and felt good to try creating something instead of buying everything. Light, distance, proportion, patience, and detail are the hardest part so far. So that's pretty much everything
@vidowatcher91, LOL! There's a good chance that it would have taken at least 3 hours for the sky, colored pencil is a slow medium! Even for some experienced artists, it could take that long to lay the sky in! I would keep going on the same piece instead of starting over, and just see how far you can take it!
Yes, it is! I always put my OMS in a water brush. It's very convenient, and I don't have to have open containers of it laying around while I'm working.
@@CautionArtistatPlay You are brilliant, have You learned it from other artist, or invented Yourself? Definitely, I will always remember that I learned it from You.
It's just something I thought of doing myself, out of convenience. Though there may be others out there who have thought to do something similar that I dont know about, lol. Thank you!!!
What I like to do is draw a detailed subject in the foreground, then something random going on in the background. I call it the "all was well until you looked closely" effect;)
wow, this is damn beautiful, i am just starting to do color drawings, can i get this effect just using color pencils and blending stumps without using water color ?
Thank you! Yes you can, you just need a lot of layers of colored pencil. Infact, the majority of this drawing is regular colored pencil, though I sometimes blended with a solvent called odorless mineral spirits. Many people like to use a solvent to blend their colored pencils to help speed up the time,, but if you layer the pencils enough you don't need solvents. Colored pencils are amazingly versatile, once you get the hang of layering them.
@@CautionArtistatPlay thanks for the tips and replying back, I have subscribed to your channel, please do post more such videos of color pencil drawings.
You'll want to use a good heavy weight paper, I'm using Stonehenge here and it works great, but hot pressed watercolor paper would probably be the best because it's made to be used with water but it's still smooth enough to use pencil on.
I was just wondering what kind of paper you're using. Is it heavier watercolor paper? Or just regular sketch and draw since you use a little bit of water color. Great tutorial, thank you for sharing this knowledge!
Hey there, I believe I'm using Stonehenge paper for this, it's thicker than regular paper and can take a lot of layers and the use of solvents for blending. It handles the watercolor pencils pretty well too. I have it, along with the other supplies linked in the description if you are interested in seeing what I used! Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed my video!
With acrylics it helps if you spray your surface evenly with water so it's damp before you add your paints. Thin your paint a bit with water or slow drying medium and work quickly.

You are very welcome!! 💖 Yes, the Derwent Lightfast Forest is a good one, I do use that one often in my work!
Wow Amazing!!!
Thank you!!
I did indeed learn things today. How about desert scenes?
I haven't really ever done a desert scene. I'm mostly inspired by my own natural surroundings, and I live in Maine, so there is not much desert inspiration here, lol.
Do you have OMS in the water pens? And then you used the sofft tool to blend? Lovely lovely result.
Thank you Julie! Yes, I use OMS in the water pen! I blend a bit with the brush and let the OMS dry a bit before I use the sofft tool, so it doesn't lift or get too streaky. It works best when there is already a lot of layers on the paper.
Caution: Artist at Play thank you-great tips!
Caution: Artist at Play thank you very much for this technic tipp
You're welcome!!
Anytime!
trees are definitely the best to draw :)
I agree! I love drawing and painting trees!
Bonjour
What pencil did you use to add white ripples on dark water? Hard to add lighter colors on top of dark colors with colored pencil?
My favorite white pencil to use is the Derwent Lightfast Chinese White. It's really opaque and goes over things well. Holbeins soft white pencil is fantastic as well. If those don't do the trick, then I recommend using the Brush and Pencil Touch Up Texture and Titanium White powder mixed together. It can be painted on and its archival because it is made to be used with colored pencil, unlike gel pen and acrylic markers, which could chip off over time.
This is insane
If you told me the water was a photo I'd believe you
It's awesome how we see all this in nature every time we look at it but I think as an artist you can appreciate it more. Any time I look at a distant mountain I think "wow that's beautiful" but never think about how it takes on the color of the sky and there's no detail and all that. Obviously my eyes see it, but my brain doesn't care to take notice. I want to start drawing, and I dont know that this is a beginner's tutorial (or at least your artwork isn't) but I hope to start soon
I know it's hard to quantify, but can you say how much is natural talent and how much is learned?
@@CautionArtistatPlay ok this is hard!🤣
I tried for the first time tonight it felt like it would have taken me 3 hours to get the sky the way I wanted and I feel like I got no detail in ANYTHING!
Is it pastel that you use for the white highlights I’m on the water?
It's a colored pencil, it's the Derwent Drawing Chinese White! It's on the soft side and very opaque!
@@CautionArtistatPlay thank you sooo much 🙏🥰
Bonjour
Sur quel papier avez vous dessiner ce beau paysage … je ne comprend pas l’anglais
Bonjour
Le papier est Stonehenge par la marque Legion.
13:57 is that Chinese White Derwent drawing pencil?
Yes it is! It's pretty much the only white pencil I use! Lol
6:12 is that a waterbrush filled with OMS? I've never seen such a trick before. Great video as usual.
😂 Perfect!!
beauty young lady artist! oil painting just with color pencil
Thank you!
❤❤❤❤
Enseignez-vous les paysages avec des cours en ligne ?
Je suis désolé, je ne le fais pas pour le moment.
wow, this is damn beautiful, i am just starting to do color drawings, can i get this effect just using color pencils and blending stumps without using water color ?
Thanks for subscribing! I will definitely be doing more colored pencil videos in the future!
what if I'm using paper, does the paper will wet wet if I'm gonna use watercolor?
You'll want to use a good heavy weight paper, I'm using Stonehenge here and it works great, but hot pressed watercolor paper would probably be the best because it's made to be used with water but it's still smooth enough to use pencil on.
My jaw has dropped … wish I could be this good😅
Thank you!! 😊
Ur welcome
Have you thought about signing your Art in the ripples of the Water
That would be cool, there are times when I try to find unique places to sign my work, all depends on the piece and my mood at the time lol
water or oil colored pencil ? oil or water blending?
I used watercolor pencils with water for a few of the under layers, and regular colored pencil with odorless mineral spirits for top layers.
How to I bring blending
With colored pencil use a sharp point with small circular strokes and lots of light layers.
In acrylic painting
With acrylics it helps if you spray your surface evenly with water so it's damp before you add your paints. Thin your paint a bit with water or slow drying medium and work quickly.
Ok thanks sister
You're welcome!
1k like by me.. 😃😃
Awesome!! Thank you!! 😊
Ok so i bought expensive pencils and fancy paper and still looks like @#%@! What kind of witchcraft are you all using?
😂 Just years of practice that's all!
Indonesian subtitle please
Thank you for the suggestion, I will see what I can do!
None of what i do looks like yours
It just takes time and patience, that's all.
Any indians here hands up 🙌
