Doctor Who: A Celebration lists Sarah Kingdom as a companion. That's good enough for me. Another guide gets the way she died wrong. It said she had some kind of side effect that prevented her from proper time travel so she just aged to dust. No mention of her aging to death because of the Time Destructor. Also 2 different versions of her last moments. TV version she ages to dust. Novel version she sees the ghost of Bret Vyon beckoning to her forgiving her for shooting him then aging to dust.
Harry Sullivan had a mention in "The Zygon inversion." I know this was made years after the actor died. But Harry was credited with making a gas that could kill Zygons.

But I feel he was written to be purposefully unlikeable so that when he was kicked off the TARDIS then audience was much more receptive to a more charming and likeable character who would join the Doctor and Rose within a few episodes... the one and only Face of Boe (otherwise known by his alias Captain Jack Harnkess).
@@Connor.Buchanan I think your totally right there. I know a lot was changed for the script of the long game, originally more of the focus was going to be on Adam. But he is definitely supposed to be unlikable & that works really well.
Adam is what Adric detractors think he is. He is very dislikable but the 9th Doctor never wanted him in the first place, basicly dropped him into an alien situation with no guidance, explore do whatever you want.
The doctor since 2005 has been very picky who he travels with someone with a spark. I hope in the future he picks someone who isn’t a good choice to start but the doctor could make them better. The handgun Sara Kingdom had was similar in size and shape, to the Cyberguns seen in the 10th planet and the Moonbase and also in the very shortlived sci-fi series in the mid 70s Star Maidens used by the woman on the planet Medusa ruled by women and men were slaves to the women.

I have to rise to Adams defense. Their traveling through time and space with the Dr. able to use some of the most advanced technology ever created. Why shouldn't a compainion pick up an item or two. @@thewhoview Well the way I see it, if the general consensus by everyone was that they were companions then there wouldn't be any forgotten companions.
The new series has suffered IMO by always having a modern day female companion and often her boyfriend. I also feel we should have had at least a few episodes of The Doctor and River traveling together as a proper companion and not just a guest star, but of course I love Alex Kingston and feel she should have met 13, as well as 13/Missy having a cat fight and River assisting. Anyway, I think they really need to branch out and try something new. Would LOVE an Emma Peel type companion complete with martial arts skills, perhaps starting out as a badas$ who has little patience for the Doctor’s antics and comes from a harsh time/place where people do not trust one another. After awhile the Doctor risks his life to save her and she returns the favor, and begins to see the Universe thru his eyes of compassion and helping others rather than being out for yourself. I think she’d be extremely popular and would have a fantastic arc, and we get to see the contrast of the Doctor and his insistence on helping the underdog and whenever she finally leaves, she ‘s a truly good person and committed to helping others, perhaps defending some off world village/society and even falling in love, not because of usual the cheesy formula, but because she is actually able to love someone now and trust that they care for her in return. Plus love seeing tough companions like Leela and Ace. :-)
@@NewtonDKC There were a lot of female companions in classic Who, but there was a lot more variety to them from different time periods & other planets. Adam's emotional maltreatment by the Ninth Doctor, with the mocking line about seeing him in a fight and "throw your A-levels at them", was the ethical end of DW, long before Timeless Child ever happened. It was a real life crime against the safety of children, as it encouraged and participated in bullying the vulnerable. RTD was deliberately fishing to make the revived show cool by doing that to exactly the character type associated with being old DW's audience. As too he was by making the Ninth Doctor all leathery and street-poser macho unlike any Classic Doctor. Eccleston's willingness to do it makes him by far the worst Doctor, ethically as well as in character, and deserving to get retconned out of being the Doctor at all and instead made into a villain Time Lord stealing one of the Doctor's lives. The real Ninth Doctor he shoved out of the way could be made Jo Martin.
@@conscienceaginBlackadder I think the war doctor is supposed to be the worst version of the doctor. A man who deliberately throws away everything he was even refusing to be called the doctor in order to become a soldier forced into fighting, willing to do anything it takes to end a war.
I don't think Sara Kingdom counts as a companion. Companion is a problematic word as it could apply to anyone who steps onto the Tardis. I prefer "assistant" as it's less ambiguous.
Totally agree, although I don't think the concept of a Companion (with a "Big C") is particularly problematic. The character of a Companion is conceived up front, sometimes with mini-biographies and back-stories provided for the writers to work with. They're meant to be the Doctor's right-hand man/woman, and "co-star", for one or more series. Many, even most, actors playing these Companions have undergone a rigorous selection process to land this coveted role; Barry Letts considered and/or auditioned more than 200 actresses for the parts of Jo Grant and Sarah Jane Smiith, for example. The only real exception to this rule is Frazer Hines, who so impressed as Jamie that they asked him to stay on for the foreseeable future. Actors like Adrienne Hill (Katarina) and Jean Marsh (Sara Kingdom), just went through the usual audition process - if they were auditioned at all - as they were only conceived of as supporting characters, but never THE companion.

Grow up. Learn how to cope with not liking something, you don't have to bend over backwards doing all sorts of mental gymnastics to pathetically try to justify why you think they aren't real. Just say "it's not for me" and move on. The show's canonicity doesn't revolve around your personal enjoyment levels.

@@DarrenEden-ub4vj Yeah I remember that, it was a nice nod to his character. His more of an honorable mention on my list, not forgotten but often overlooked or outshined by a lot more popular companions from Tom's era.
Honourable mention to Adric. An 80’s companion a lot of people *wish* they could forget 🤪
@@richardmattocks tbh I thought Adric was much more suited to Tom's doctor than Peter's.

Kamelion is in loads of expanded media. Great creation and prop. interesting character too, well voiced, albeit too impractical.

@@BernardJKD it's just my opinion you don't have to agree with me. I'm not going to stop anyone from liking something, if you like kamelion that's awesome. 😊
I feel like Adam was sort of a sacrificial scapegoat companion. Meaning that it introduced the new (modern-era) audience to the concept that it was possible for the Doctor to travel with people in addition to Rose.
Like that soldier from “into the dalek”. I think it would be good to show people that they can change and are worth a chance.

Since it's an animated version, it could still be brought back, especially when Disney pulls the plug.
@@justynmatlock8873 Although it would be interesting, I don't know if that would attract enough viewers to justify them making it. I think a Paul McGann series would be more likely to happen than a animated series with Richard E Grant as the doctor.

That could work too, although if it were live action, Paul McGann is 64 now and doesn't look like himself, if you know what I mean. That sort of thing doesn't matter in a cartoon.

@@Eltonlaleham I think you mean the invasion, or maybe the 80s Cybermen. The Cybermen in the tenth planet didn't use handguns; they used the lower part of their chest units, which were removable. The moonbase Cybermen were also similar to the tenth planet; though their weapons looked more like a sort of rod that slid into the bottom of their chest units.
I have to rise to Adams defense. Their traveling through time and space with the Dr. able to use some of the most advanced technology ever created. Why shouldn't a compainion pick up an item or two. Something that lets them do more than stand around going oh Dr. save us. Adams only mistake was the port was designed to access info only from the station. Well the way I see it, if the general consensus by everyone was that they were companions then there wouldn't be any forgotten companions.
Are we playing who can name the most obscure Who characters ever?
With modern Who it's always present day, earth companions, which has become tiring. I really love your idea of an Emma Peel companion traveling with the doctor; that's so awesome. 😁👌
@@conscienceaginBlackadder I don't know how many others would agree with you on the Jo Martin doctor, but hey everyone's different. 😉
