You can get away with doing it on slightly larger holes too. I'd say anything larger than about a half inch and you're going to want to do a patch. The goal is to repair it and not compromise the integrity of the drywall in the future. I still see the holes though. But yea I see your point. But you can also mix paint In it to blend.
