I woke up to the news of John Belushi’s death. The family was in the living room and the Blues Brothers was on, after the end credits ended they put up a photo of him with 1948-1982 below it.
About four months after he died, “Blade Runner” came out, and one character, in the context of the short life span of an advanced artificial life form he created, states: “The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long.” Instead of merely lamenting Belushi’s relatively short life, I’d prefer to believe that we all got to witness a shooting star burn brightly, and that we should savor the memories and the TV and film content he left us, and be glad we got to witness it. If asked the question, “Where were you when you heard John died?,” in my case, I was preparing for the biggest shift in my young life, as my family and I were planning a move to Texas when my dad got transferred, and I had to leave my beloved Chicago, family, and friends at age 13 and start anew (we left the same week “Blade Runner” came out no less). I eventually adjusted to Texas and started a great new chapter, but I didn’t pay attention to Belushi’s death like I should’ve at the time, being barely a teen who didn’t pay attention to Big Things yet, but in hindsight, this time of transition always will be bittersweet.
It was around this time that sister station WCBS Channel 2 in New York, after opening with a knockoff theme since 1979 (and using it in advertising beginning in 1978), began playing "follow the leader" and using Dick Marx' original theme as played on WBBM since 1975, on their newscasts.

I remember watching John Belushi with Gene Siskel on Channel 2 News at 6pm in 1981 way before he passed away, while watching Hogan's Heores on WGN-TV Channel 9
I remember seeing this on the news. I was 11 years old. There was a UA-cam channel that said John Belushi was reading a script for a movie called Atuk when he passed away. And every comedic actor who has read or seen that script has died. The last person to see the Atuk script was Chris Farley. 🤔
Crazy that I was only 3 years old when John Belushi passed and yet I remember my parents and neighbors talking about him when it happened. Unreal to believe it's already 42 years. Unreal. Most important takeaway - live life to the fullest!
No mention of drugs at all on the newscast. There had to at least be a suspicion of drugs, as everyone knew of his addiction. Eventually, it did come out. Funny guy.

Fun fact. The film Ghostbusters was originally supposed to be a vehicle for John Belushi. Dan Akroyd was writing it to help his friend out of his acting slump at the time. Shame John couldn't have just hung on a bit longer.
Even more classic Dan found out about John right in the middle of writing movie "Spies Like Us" with Dave Thomas. SCTV delayed production ultimately a month as a result. Brian Doyle gave a good tribute for the next taping of #SNL which is on #Peacock
I recognized some of the Second City performers and loved Gene's remembrance of Belushi. The other sentence I typed when I just saw the part where Gene was interviewing John.
Months after his passing, channel 7 showed the Blues Brothers on the ABC Sunday Night Movie in October of '82. And for the balance of the 80s, channel 9 showed Animal House number of times.
I have a very vivid memory of watching the nightly news cast on this date and seeing the news that Belushi had died. I was 9 years old and sleeping over at a friend's house for the first time.
