    when i started painting 6ish years ago i got a set of cheap palate knifes, and while ive mostly replaced them they still work fine, i was extremely rough with them as i would use them for more abstract expressionist style paintings and push and grind them into the canvas/panel, and as such the blades are all a little bit bent upwards, still usable mind you, but you can easily spend $10 on a set of 6-8 wood handled pallet knives from joannes or michaels and have them last.

    Every so often I will use a palette knife for most of a painting in order to get a looser application of paint, particularly if I am doing an impressionistic or semi-abstract type of scene.

    Thanks for explaining what each knife could be used for. I am just starting to experiment with palette knives. Quick question....Can I spray varnish an acrylic painting I did with a palette knife?

    • @walcottfineart5088
      @walcottfineart5088  3 роки тому

      Sure that would be fine. Spray would probably be easier if there is lots of texture on the painting. Thanks for watching!

    • @walcottfineart5088
      @walcottfineart5088  4 роки тому +1

      For a knife painting you would proabably find it easier to have a more textured surface. I think a standard canvas board would work well for this rather than the smooth panels. Thanks for watching! :)

    Off topic question: How do you decide whether to use inorganic or organic oil paints? Like what Gamblin offers?

    • @walcottfineart5088
      @walcottfineart5088  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching and great question! The answer really depends on what you want your paints to do and the style of your artwork. Inorganic (metal-based) pigments like the cadmiums or cobalts are brightly saturated in mass tone right from the tube, but tend to go a little grayish and dull when mixed with white. (think Impressionsists). The synthetic organic modern pigments are highly saturated in both mass tones and tints with white, and tend to be more transparent. That's why they are often darker straight from the tube. Most artists choose a variety of both, so it depends on what kind of color you want your art work to have and the eefects you want to achieve.

    • @eLyoUKayE1
      @eLyoUKayE1 4 роки тому

      Ok, thanks! If you use organic transparent colors, would you have to paint several layers for the equivalent of what opaque looks like with inroganic?

    • @walcottfineart5088
      @walcottfineart5088  4 роки тому +1

      @@eLyoUKayE1 Well the more layers you paint of a transparent color, the darker it will get. With the organic transparent colors, just adding a tiny bit of white will give you an intense color and the white will add opacity, so that would be the way to do it.

    i find the bill alexander (same as bob ross's) one to be my favorite for painting and mixing larger piles of paint :)
    only thing is i wish there was the curve like others so you can lay it completely flat on the canvas without touching your painting with your hand by mistake.

    • @walcottfineart5088
      @walcottfineart5088  4 роки тому +2

      Yeah that would actually be a good idea! It's so funny, I sold all my Bob Ross stuff years ago but kept that knife just in case...I hardly ever use it though. LOL Thanks for watching! :)

    Can u tell us what kind of paper to use in oil painting

    • @walcottfineart5088
      @walcottfineart5088  4 роки тому

      If you want to paint on paper with oils, the paper needs to be coated first with acrylic gesso. So it's best to use something that can withstand that like watercolor or printmaking paper. Arches also makes an "oil paper" that is ready to paint on with oils right out of the box. Thanks for watching!

    I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I can scoop the entire oil with the pk, but then after a while, i have to switch to a diff pk bc there are streaks... which gets on my nerves, and i find myself cleaning the glass. Then, i have to switch back, so on and so forth. On a diff note, I don’t like the paper palettes bc it leaves a stain...Which again, i have to clean up, which is not possible. UGH! I’m dead lol
    Ps
    I only use pk to mix my colors

    • @walcottfineart5088

      I can't say for sure what's going on without seeing your methods. The only thing I can think of is to make sure you are cleaning your knife well between mixes? Paper palettes are convenient for videos but I use a wooden one for my actual painting. :) Thanks for watching!
