I'm so excited to follow you through this project for the next year! I've never heard of ribbon maps before, that was fascinating. Your love for nature journaling is absolutely contagious
Thank you for sharing your new project! The new sound addition on the Merlin APP is marvelous, isn't it? I would love a studio tour and I look forward to learning more about nature in your home region this year. I hope someday to visit there. Best wishes!
Thanks, Linda! I'm back out in the Undercliffs tomorrow doing more observations and filming more for the next vlog on this project! Studio tour is definitely forthcoming 😊 PS - yeah Merlin is just the best, my favourite ever app I think!
You are very creative, Alex. Love to see your upcoming video's. I have learned a lot and will be learning a lot more in the future from you, I am for sure. Thanks!!
This is going to be such a fantastic project, I can't wait to see it unfold over the next year or so. Yes to a studio tour and Yes to seeing more vlogs like this. I look forward to seeing the next one. Take care Alex.
They are, and mesmerising when there is a whole book of them. If you get the chance to look through a version of John Ogilby's Britannica, I recommend it! Some images of the pages may be found online 😊
This reminds me of the pirate maps my siblings and I would make as kids- it looks like a lot of fun! It was funny because right as you asked about the studio tour, I was wondering about your studio - so yes, I am interested (and intrigued as to why you have a low table to draw on!).
It is a lot like making pirate maps, there's something so satisfying about mapping and art combined. Will film a studio tour for sure. Short answer RE low desk is I hate chairs and prefer to sit cross legged or kneeling. My high desk has a beanbag rather than a chair too 😂
Thanks Alex, that was really interesting. I am going to look at the cartographer you mentioned and also the beautiful book. I look forward to seeing how your project develops.
Aww, thank you. Hope you enjoy the content. Some of my older stuff is pretty ropey while I was still learning how to make videos properly 😅 Best ones are from this year 🤣
Random algorithm click… but wow, I’m glad I did! #Subbed for sure, I’m now eagerly on board to watch this progress, love the ribbon map idea! P.S. You can refill those “disposable” Pigma Microns if the nibs are still good, just pull the nib with tweezers and drip in some Indian/Bombay ink… bonus that it’s cheap … and waterproof!
UA-cam has been recommending my content more recently, which is good news for me! Glad you're following along. Thanks for the tip with the fine liners, might just try that! 😁
Your artwork is amazing and this project sounds fascinating!🐦 I'm looking forward to seeing your progress throughout the year. I've just had to pounce on a second-hand copy of that gorgeous book by Elaine Franks that you showed us too. 😊 Yes, please do a studio tour!🎨
Hi Alex, Did you ever use drawing paper made out of stone? I have discovered it and it is very smooth. Since I’m a beginner sketcher for many years, I love natural Journaling, Beach combing , Forest collecting, and Mushroom observation! I take many pictures because I cannot seem to draw it all. I love your drawing. You are very talented . You make the most Beautiful and informative Journals. Thank You for sharing.
Alex, can you use light washes of watercolor in the Midori Notebook? Just wondered how much warping the cotton paper would have. Excited to be joining your Nature Journaling Circle and the ribbon map is wonderful, can't wait to see it come to life!
Hi Kelly, will be great to have you join us. I personally never use water in the Midori book, as the paper is quite thin. It's really good quality paper, but it's not really designed for watercolour. It's superb for coloured pencils though 😊
I've been using the Merlin app every morning while walking my dog and it's helped me get familiar with certain birds as well as start identifying new ones I hadn't noticed before. I really like it!
Greetings from northern Vermont US. I’m a fairly new subscriber. Love your nature journals and the idea of nature journaling. This looks like a fascinating project and a lovely place to journal and explore. I look forward to following along. And I would love to see a studio tour as your studio looks so cozy, relaxing and a great place to create. Also, thank you so much for mentioning the Merlin app. I’ve used some other apps but this one will be much more so helpful as I am visually impaired so I often times only get the birdsong and can’t always get,a clear physical description unless I can get a photo.
Oh, this is exciting! I am very much looking forward to seeing how this journal progresses and I love your use of the ribbon map etc. I had never heard of the Merlin app but will definitely be snaffling that up for my own wanderings. I am not too bad with plants but my knowledge of bird song is woeful so I will look forward to learning. Also, it was lovely to see a little more of your workspace and the things that you have around you for inspiration. Thank you.
This new project looks very exciting. I love the mapping and all the different wild life and plants you will be tracking. Curious about your studio. Does it serve as meditation room too? If I saw this properly, you sit on the floor when drawing? I should look at it again. The whole set-up indoors and outdoors is quite different from last year. I love the changes and wish you much success. 💚
Thank you so much, Gisela 🙏 Yes, the studio functions as many things - art studio, yoga room, zendo (meditation room), and secondary piano practice room (for when the lounge is occupied!) I do indeed sit on the floor on my zafu when using the low desk. When I'm on the high desk, I sit cross legged in a bean bag! I'll do a studio tour sometime soon, the idea seems rather popular! 😊
I’m new to nature journaling and am enjoying your videos! I found you just this week. I primarily use watercolors and/or gouache. Do you ever journal using either of these mediums? Your colored pencil sketches are beautiful!
Thank you 😊 I don't often use watercolour and haven't used gouache in years. When I do use watercolour, it's usually in combination with inks. Just got some awesome light shifting watercolours though, which I'll try out for the first time in an upcoming video 😊
I love the Merlin app! I would love to know about other apps that help integrate with nature journaling. I don't always have my journal but I always have my phone.
Yes i like to see you studio!
Great, will do 😊
I'm so excited to follow you through this project for the next year! I've never heard of ribbon maps before, that was fascinating. Your love for nature journaling is absolutely contagious
Great, glad you're going to follow! I've just been out on the reserve for the second trip today 😁
