7 movies that embody the 7 deadly sins 🐍🍎🎥
Who do I have to talk to in order to get the Tim Roth movie on streaming? Some sins were super easy to assign a movie to (ie. Lust lol), while others took more time. Please please please leave your choices below; I'm super interested to see what you picked! Hope you enjoyed this video, even if you watched the movies already.

This was a dream come true. Thank you to the @criterioncollection team, especially Valeria. Seeing all the people on line made me hopeful for the future of Criterion, cinema and physical media in general. Support your boutique labels ppl! If you have any further questions, drop them below. why are ballerinas always so unhinged in movies? 🩰🎥
Переглядів 41 тис.2 місяці тому
From the 40's to present day, the world of ballet has been used as a backdrop for dramatic stories that often feature young women and their relationship with themselves (and their peers). As a former ballerina myself, I've always been drawn to these stories, due to the subject matter, and decided to take a look at the stereotypes that frequently show in these movies. Horror movies have an espec...

Costume design is one of my favorite parts when I'm watching a movie, but sometimes I get annoyed by random things. This video was made because I needed to take a break from writing and filming video essays (which take a long ass time). Jokes on me, bc I spent longer than expected on this. the costume design of 'challengers' is genius 🧵🎾

This is what happens when you have fashion designers design costumes for movies. I literally spent hours rewatching and screenshotting "Challengers" in order to zoom in on the tiny details. From her Cartier stud earrings to her one-time mother of pearl necklace, there was a lot to take in on my subsequent watches. I'm obsessed with this movie! ultimate beginner's guide to "old hollywood" movies 📽️ where + what to watch
Переглядів 6 тис.5 місяців тому
Watching old black and white movies is so Blair Waldorf coded. If you've always wanted to get into classic films, I'm compiled these recommendations for you as a starting point. Romance, comedy and thriller genres tend to be the easiest to get into, since they're easy to watch and have compelling plots (plus they usually have great costuming). the power of color in costume design + film 🎨

Just a girl talking about how important color is to costume design film. The idea of this video essay was inspired by a visually pleasing Daniel Netzel video thumbnail on costume design ("How a Costume Designer Creates an Iconic Look"). Since I love costumes x movies so much, I thought it would be fun to switch the colors of the outfits around to show you how different the scene would be. Sourc...

From me and my eyelash hanging on for it's dear life, I hope you enjoy this rec list. These are just a few of the movies that stuck out to me bc of their costume design. After quickly counting them, I have around 200-ish books shoved onto this shelf. I probably have a lot more now because I bought a TON of books after filming this video. One day (when I'm hopefully not living in an apartment), I hope to build my own cozy reading nook and have a floor to ceiling library à la "Beauty and the Beast" style. Fantastic list!! I tell ppl about Soylent Green all the time but it’s weirdly hard to get a hold of. Will be checking out the films I don’t know. 🖤
Funnily enough, Carry Grant played a love interest for Marlyn, Grance and Audrey
I managed to find Captives, watched it and loved it! And all those tattoos are his real tattoos!
Damn I'm so glad! And those tattoos 🥵🥵🥵
As soon as i saw Ellen Berrent (Leave her to heaven) in the thumbnail, i instantly clicked and then when i heard your intro and heard you speak i instantly subscribed! Excellent movie taste
This made my day! 😭💖 glad to see there are other people with similar movie tastes ✨
I get why people would recommend picking their choices first then talking about them after but a fundamental part of those videos is people fumbling around trying to find what they want!
the outfit is fantastic
Thank you!
DVDLady has Captive. Reddit seems to think it's a decent seller. Also a huge Tim Roth fan.
I really love Leave Her to Heaven, the greatest film noir in technicolor!
It's so damn good!
Since you like Female Rage. Can we get a video about It? And maybe some recommendations 👉👈
Ohh maybe!!!
Tim Roth really has this raw sexiness to him, so glad someone else appreciates that. ❤
Yessss 😍 I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that!
8:50 all i could think was carrie(1976) !!
You know what's crazy? Ive never watched the '76 version!
@ it’s the only version i’ve seen to be honest😭😭
Your Criterion Closet video was great, was my gateway to your channel. My gf isn’t a film nerd like me so I’ll be coming here for my outlet 😆 Appreciate you!
☺️ thank you for sticking around!
I loooove ur hair and outfit here btw ! Great video idea !!
Thank you! 😭 I'm thankful it was a good hair day
Awesome, thanks!
Yeah, well, I don't live in America so I don't care.
I also love how they talk about how young Tashi is so good at tennis “you can already see the adidas deal” and when they are older Art is sponsored by Uniqlo which subtly tells you that Art never ended up being as good at tennis as Tashi was since he didn’t end up getting an adidas deal
They should probably do this in Barnes & Noble stores so we don't have to wait for the truck to come to every city. B&N stores are all over the country and they already have movie shelves with many Criterion titles. It would add foot traffic to the bookstores and help sell Criterion discs. Not to mention, there wouldn't be long lines.
Two for one - super smart!
This video is amazing! You've done such a great job! You've opened the doors to a world I didn't know about but I'm definitely going to keep my eye on 👀🙌
Very entertaining, thank you, but please speak more slowly.
I'm going to work on some captions soon!
Yay! Share your Criterion TOP 5's!!! Mine: Tokyo Story / I Am Cuba / Hiroshima, Mon Amour / Pather Panchali / Parasite My Top 5 Criterion Hopes: The White Ribbon / There Will Be Blood / Network / Burning / Sideways
Right now it's: In the Mood for Love / Godzilla / Some Like It Hot / Design for Living / Leave Her to Heaven I also need to watch Tokyo Story!
I was about to mention Princess Tutu when I saw the nod in there! The art form, and also the anime, are also tied to the performative aspect, where an entire story is played out without words, just as the main character in that is unable on several levels to really communicate her identity and love. I think part of the stereotype is really linked with that interpretive style, not just any potential injuries are hidden, but the performers' voices. There's this heightened unreality, people transformed into dolls and animals (on stage and in the show)and still telling an entirely nonverbal, coherent story. While I don't dance regularly now, I took ballet regularly until I was 14, and then off and on again since my mid-20s, and there's this dissonance I don't think anyone who hasn't danced for a long time and loved it can understand, and so from the outside it looks like extreme self-punishment when it's difficult to really explain that rush and pride of "I did that" from pushing yourself that little bit further and making yourself into your art. It's an entirely different adrenaline rush from any other sport I've done. It's major league sports level training and intensity, but instead how well can you build that illusion of weightlessness and effortless grace and the sheer endorphin rush even if it feels like my toenails are being shoved backwards.
Easy sub; you and your husband enjoy it together and that's awesome!
6:02 both of these outfits were a slay. So cute!
As soon as I hear the word “Reddit” I turn off
I just finished reading Memoirs of a Geisha and while the overall plot and characters were okay I was so so shocked to find out it was fiction written by a white man. Really want to read the other book u were holding, is it good?
It's incredibly different and reads like a memoir (which some ppl have said is a little more dull). However if you're interested in geishas and enjoy reading memoirs, it's good!
Did you also go to the CC mobile closet in Brooklyn, Oct 26-27? I can't find any report on that one. I wonder if the lines were shorter, and whether the experience was any different. I also wonder how long they can keep on doing this, as this seems like an expensive endeavor. They hire all these people, pay rent, salaries, AND give away free discs. Criterion is NOT a big and rich company. You can tell by how few discs they make. Kino Lorber probably makes more discs in a week than Criterion does in a month.
I didn't go when it was in Brooklyn but I saw way less posts online. Some who got into line at 7:40am stepped into the truck around 10:40am. This is definitely a marketing thing, so they're aiming for exposure. A lot of ppl stopped and asked what the truck was for when I was on line 😆
I went on the very first day, it was rainy and cold but we all perservered! The Criterion folks were incredibly kind, constantly came to check on us, passing us free ponchos and snacks.
🫡 respect for you braving the storm
@ thanks! I’m just glad I didn’t get sick 😆
Oh lucky you! ❤👏
Great info and job during your closet time- guess I need to finally watch "Donkey Skin" from the Demy box set.
This trope reminds me a lot of how classical strings are portrayed in film as well- mostly violin and cello (they always forget the violas). One example off the top of my head is from the umbrella academy where SPOILER ALERT the mentally ill violinist has a psychic break in the middle of a solo and her powers go haywire. SPOILER OVER I think the overlaps between rigid teachers, perceived femininity, wealth, and performance are what draw writers to both of these arts, and it's interesting to see the parallels. Although, instead of bleeding toes it's usually bleeding fingertips for the violinists lol
wait the closet is actually a truck? i never knew that
The real one isn't! This truck was created just for this experience.
The real Criterion Closet is in Criterion's headquarter, also in NYC.
thank you so much for sharing your experience!!! i LOVEEEEE design for living, one of my all time favorite criterion films and i'm obsessed with the costumes in donkey skin <3 the sky dress *sobs* i dream of it
Design For Living is so underrated! My fave Donkey Skin dress is the sun dress that she bakes in ☀️✨
You said the heiress and I love that movie and only have seen it once but it was awesome
Time for a rewatch!
I also like to add that as cool as ballet horror/thriller is, I can see from this video that it can be frustrating and a bore that this is the only reoccurring theme when Hollywood makes a ballet film. We need a balance. Let’s hope someday we can see more light hearted, comedic ballet movies that’ll be Emmy worthy.
Can someone please list all the movies that was mentioned in the video? I’m interested to watch all of them. Also, I didn’t know there were more ballerina movies on screen so as an aspiring dancer I find this really cool! The most I’ve seen repeatedly are Princesse Tutu, Black Swan, and Leap 😊
If you click on the Letterboxd companion link in the description, it will have all the movies listed!
@@gimmepuffsleevesAh, ok I see them. Thank you 😄
Patrick's watch looks like a Vintage Gold Watch, maybe Patek or Omega . He's begging for food wearing a watch worth thousands of dollars, but , I guess, he could say, it was a gift.
Good informative video without pretentiousness.
Do they replenish the shelves if all copies of a title have been picked by others? At 3-5min per person, or 10-12 people per hour, and you waited for 5 hours -- so I'm guessing the line was about 50-60 people long? What if all 60 people picked the Peeping Tom 4K Blu-ray? Some titles were bound to be out of stock, right? I wouldn't want to wait 3 hours to find out the title I wanted was out. (In the last Barnes & Noble sale I went to, Peeping Tom 4K was sold out in all the B&N stores in NYC.)
To my knowledge, they don't 😭 I expect the newer releases have a higher chance of running out. Also I just watched Peeping Tom this year and it is so good/horrifying at the same time!
Criterion is doing this strictly for the fans since they don't seem to make money doing this: they give you free discs and they don't charge admission. But their closet videos for the celebrities do make money for them since the celebrities help them sell products -- every celebrity has a "shopping page" on the Criterion website showing all their picks.
Why do you state the obvious? Do you work for them?
@@timetheory84 That is NOT an obvious thing. Most viewers don't realize the closet videos are business deals, and think regular folk will be invited. No, you won't be invited unless you are a celebrity filmmaker who can promote products for Criterion.
@@classicvideogoodies Yes, it's obvious. Relax.
I've been collecting Criterion's since 2001 and must have over maybe 600-700 Criterion's. I've lost count. It'd be nice to go in that van, but I don't know if I could wait in line that long but thank you anyways for sharing your experience. It must have been a real treat to be in there and meet the people who work for the Criterion Collection.
I suppose you could say this is "A Criterion Closet", not The Criterion Closet? I can understand the sort time frame allowed if they're allowing everyone access, but, three minutes, is, I feel, too short.
Omg that's amazing! Do you ever feel like you're running out of space?
@@gimmepuffsleeves Yeah, space is an issue. I have other boutique labels as well like Arrow's, Vinegar Syndrome's, Severin's, Kino Lorber's, Shout and Scream Factory's. Are you familiar with those companies?
Envious! Stellar film choices too 👏🎬
This is very interesting. What exactly is the appeal of this, waiting hours just to be able to pick movies out of a shelf? Is it because of the social media attention that the videos can get? I’m just confused why there’s an almost cult-like obsession.
Criterion Closet Pick vids are so fun to watch and many ppl dream of being able to go into the closet and be surrounded by physical movies. I wonder if the lost nostalgia of Blockbuster has any influence bc I miss being able to walk into one and pick up a vhs/dvd.
@@gimmepuffsleeves Got it! I guess it’s not as big in Europe, which is why I didn’t have it on my radar until now.
@@TheTimTriAll the bigger sellers in the UK sell Criterion.
I tried twice, two different Saturdays. But the lines were crazy. I opted for my Criterion Closet experience at Book Off and B&N on 5th Ave. Right across the street from the truck used to be a Tower Records store that had a great Criterion section (DVDs only back then). It closed down over 15 years ago. I bought Le Samourai on DVD from there. That was my first real experience hunting for Criterion movies. I was hoping to get the Le Samourai 4K at the truck as a full circle moment but when I heard that people were waiting in line for like 6 or 7 hours, I just couldn’t do it.
Damn 😭 I'm so sorry!
omg dev hynes!!!
Loved this video Thank You for the tips I hope they come to San Diego or LA. Can you only talk about 3 films? And you can only buy 3 can these be box sets?
I hope so too! You can talk about as many (or as little) films as you can manage in the 3 minutes. And for buying, a box set counts as one item.
@@gimmepuffsleeves Thank You
Great video ! Thanks so much for this. I'm going to be going to the one coming up in NYC! Can't wait !
Good luck and have a blast!
@@gimmepuffsleeves thank you!
Who still owns a dvd player?
If you have a PlayStation or an Xbox you essentially have a dvd player
Me. I have a PS5 and a separate 4K player.
I have been collecting media, like Criterion, since the days of Laserdisc. The only thing that would get me more excited for Criterion Collection Blu-ray's and 4k Blu-ray's is if they improved their video compression quality. That is their one, continuing, Achilles' Heel. Glad you had a great time in the Criterion closet! 😁
Yes, I actually have their version of Seven on laserdisc, which is the exact same special edition that was released on DVD, but for some reason Criterion didn't hold on to the license for the dvd. Also, there were many other movies they released on laser disc that they lost in the dvd market.
Dedication can lead you to complete insanity... bitches be wildin.
What an amazing video! Lovely dress and great movie picks. That seems quite difficult for a shy person like me, but you did great. It's so sad you can only go 3 minutes. What a dream! And wearing a chinese outfit. Amazing!!!
