I want to say that high notes are not necessarily harder, but her impeccable technique is what makes it harder. She belts effortlessly, is always in tune, and her voice has a beautiful color!

I just wanna make it clear - beyond the higher keys she sings in (Her register is pretty high - still impressive), she also adds a lot of technique (Bad Romance is a good example) and makes specific notes higher then they should be in the key, which isn't highlighted here.

I think she actually sang opera at one point pre American idol. And she was classically trained. Whoever did her training did her right.
So many vocal coaches will want to put you in a box if you have a voice that they think is suited for something.
I’m still watching, but the transition and technique in Just a Girl is another example of how it’s not just about the range but also the technique and what it adds to the song.

yes this made me want to watch some of these performances in full because it's not always the higher notes that are the hardest; in fact for her i'm guessingthey rarely are. But unusual vocal runs can be VERY hard to manage and she has so many truly inspired and honestly astounding takes

The arrangements of just a girl and wide awake took songs that gave a bop feel that completely took away the meanings when Kelly rearranged them and sang them I had no idea how sad both were. But every single one of these singers and their songs does elevate. I don't even think she can help it notes that are impossible for other people either low or high are effortless for her. It’s just like at her concerts going back as far as I can remember, the fans go absolutely nuts when she hits high or powerful notes so while I can understand what you’re saying here, I also understand what Jason is saying about giving the fans those moments on her show. It may not always fit, but the fans come in part for that.

Mitski's My Love Mine All Mine feels like a somber reflection where you're already at peace with the situation. Kelly's feels like an agonizing realisation where you just started to feel the pain and it physically breaking you down.

Looks to me like she can belt…and that’s always her default. Almost her crutch. I wouldn’t have noticed it if you hadn’t put Billie’s song at 1:11. Billie’s singing that song in somber, mournful manner & Kelly just sees it as another opportunity to belt
