In the movie, the Polish woman who couldn't speak English was the only innocent woman on Murderer's Row, but because she couldn't speak English to defend herself she was framed and hanged. I believe she was also the first woman to actually be hanged (at least in the movie) which is why everyone suddenly went from smug about their murderers to desperate to be acquitted. You KNOW she's innocent because during the Cell Block Tango, she's the only one who has a white handkerchief. Shows just how unjust the system really is.
Cell Block Tango is definitely my favourite song, but the Overture is just sooo delicious.
I think this is also a subtle commentary on the slavophobia of america, which hits hard as slavic people still are hated and don't get proper representation and are labeled as racist when they ask for representation, and how every time a war happens with Eastern europeans the entire nationalities get hated (ww1 had Ukrainians being abused in America and put in jnternment camps like the japanese), Serbs were hated in the 80s, Russians are hated now, slavs were targeted by the triple k cult (

I don’t remember what she’s actually saying, but the ‘uh-uh’ is literally her saying she’s innocent. The others are ‘he had it coming’ and she was ‘uh-uh, not guilty’. She was framed for her lover’s murder.
Edit: one of my very BFFs does aerial hoop. It’s super difficult, the ladies train for years to make it look effortless. The hoop is metal and it hurts if you are slightly off and hit it. But it’s incredible to watch.
During the Cell Block Tango all of the women had red scarves representing the blood that was shed, "Squish" had a really long one because of how much there was, Velma had two scarves because she killed both her husband and sister. Hunyak had a white one because she was innocent.
Cell Block Tango is my favorite, but love them all. In 2002 this was the first show I ever saw on Broadway (with Billy Zane from Titanic as Billy Flynn), but I actually like the movie better, which is rare.
Every single woman is framed in a red light when they sing, excepts for her, who is bathed by a white light. She's, unfortunately, innocent
Another thing about the innocent girl is it was heavily implied to be Americans framing her due to anti Eastern European sentiment, as she was an Eastern European immigrants who didn't speak English. Hatred and bigotry towards EE people was and still is common and considered one of the only acceptable types of xenophobia (look at how EE people are always shown as backwards and evil and they're excluded when talking about representation just because they're europeans). I think her being EE was the main factor in her being wrongly arrested
@@finland4ever55 In the case of Sabella Nitti, the real life Italian woman she was based on, it wasn't because she was Eastern European. It was the idea, much magnified in the press of the day, that as a new immigrant she was uncouth, "greasy", dumb, immoral, etc. so of course she murdered. As soon as she got a makeover and learned some English (after her execution was stayed) she got a new trial and charges were dropped. New immigrants were looked down on and discriminated against.
It's a shame you couldn't take Cell Block Tango seriously. It's one of, If not the top song from the musical and undoubtedly inspired the musical SIX. You mentioned you didn't understand the 'Uh uh' but even though she's not speaking English that moment where she dances is such a contrast to the others in tone, music, and theme. And to hear her say 'uh uh, not guilty' is really sad. Not everything in music needs to be conveyed through words.
It's ok. You're supposed to laugh at uh uh. It makes you feel worse at the end, because you laughed at the Foreigner's accent.

He knows Queen Latifah and Taye Diggs (he lives in his own little bubble), he is familiar with Christine Baransky from "The Grinch" (sic) but he is not familiar with Richard Gere, Catherine Zeta Jones or Renée Zellweger and of course he is unable to recognize Chita Rivera's cameo because surely he hasn't heard of her... and he claims to be a singer.

This is actually based on a true story. Beulah Annan (Roxie) and Belva Gaetner (Velma) were women who killed their husbands but got off thanks to a slippery lawyer and the fact that they were glamorous women. Between 1921 and 1930, 186 women were charged with murder in Cook County and only 24 were convicted. 12 of THOSE were overturned so only 12 served their time. Even the story of the Hungarian was based on Sabella Nitti, an Italian woman charged with killing her husband. She was sentenced to hang but was saved when Belva Gaetner gave her a glamorous makeover and taught her enough English to be able to look good in the press. She was granted a new trial and charges were dropped.
The person Renee's role is based on was portrayed in the press as an innocent white girl who got corrupted by jazz, which was seen as music of black people. The press at the time was on a big anti-jazz kick.

It's sad that she's the first to be hanged considering she's the only one who is innocent.
I think part of them hanging her was because she was hungarian. If you know what america thinks of eastern europeans and slavs... you start to realize the real reason was xenophobia. The fact that she blames America itself (Uncle sam) I feel only adds merit to this interpretation.
@@finland4ever55 Plus, because of the language barrier she isn't able to spin her story the way the others are. The whole musical is about crime as entertainment, and since she's not able to turn her accusation into a performance, she gets the rope.
The uh-uh chick during the cell block tango is basically saying how much she loved her husband and that he was murdered and she was wrongfully accused. She’s the only innocent one and she is executed.

Catherine Zetac Jones actually started off in musicals in London's West End (I l worked backstage on the show 42nd Street in 1987 where she played one of the lead characters). By the time this came out most people didn't know about her past musical experience so this came as a complete shock.
Musical theatre background has always made me drawn to her. Her whole career is too be admired. But the whole cast is just ridiculously fabulous. Perfect casting all round. Yes it is Taye Diggs just being his great self. Oh my goodness the names in this 'chefs kiss' 🥰😍💋 to them all.. ❤❤❤❤
I worked with her choreographer from 42nd probably 20 years ago. She’s intense.
Somebody messed up and took my class, when we were 8, to a free theatre trip and we saw Chicago. The teachers freaked out but we couldn’t because the coach had left, we loved it! The cast were amazing and we hung out with the dancers while we waited to go home. It was awesome! That was 40 years ago and the start of my love for musical theatre ❤

The "uh uh" is like the casual way of saying, "no." "Do you want to go somewhere?" "Uh uh." In this case, it's "Yeah, but did you kill him?" "Uh-uh...NOT guilty!"

It’s so funny that you asked who the biggest star in the movie at the time was, and then didn’t know who Richard Gere is because although everyone was pretty much already a huge star, I would say that Richard had the most commercial success at the time. As he was probably the most household name at the time. But again everyone was huge. I could be wrong but that’s kinda my recollection at the time

Important to note that the production running right now is not the same one from 1975. But it is, however, the longest currently running American musical on Broadway and the longest running revival in Broadway history, having opened in the 90s.

she wasn't pregnant during the shooting the film. But she was VERY pregnant at the Oscars, when she won and performed live. I believe she gave birth like 2-3 days after the Oscars.
I love Velma’s opening, because it’s great storytelling. You don’t know she’s murdered her sister and they even introduced them as a duo, and the light being on nobody. Such a well done musical

This is one of the most impressive musical adaptations ever. They captured the spirit of the musical perfectly.
I saw this show on Broadway, and it was also AMAZING. The musical was a lot more stylized. And every scene was presented as a vaudeville act in the original show. And the costumes were more minimalist.
This version of Chicago is amazing! It’s so hard to pick a favorite song. The actors make each song incredible and memorable. I love them all. I also want to point out that “Mr. Cellophane” in this movie is an underrated gem. Such an amazing movie. This is by far my favorite movie version of a musical.

I saw this in the movie theater when it came out and absolutely loved it! One of my favorite songs, "Mr. Cellophane", was performed by John C. Reilly but I honestly loved all of them. Chicago won the Best Picture of the Year Oscar and Catherine Zeta-Jones won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Rene Zellweger and Queen Latifah were also nominated for the same award and John C. Reilly was nominated for the Best Actor in a Supporting Role. It was extremely popular. If you like Queen Latifah and want some big laughs then I highly recommend watching "Burning Down The House" that she stars in with Steve Martin.

This movie has lovely nods to the legendary Bob Fosse. I saw Chita Rivera perform as Velma in a tour to San Francisco. Wonderful! The story is based on true events with the idea that women don't commit murder...unless wronged by a man. So popularity with the public way the best was of getting off. Unfortunately for our Hungarian inmate, no money and language barrier sent her to the gallows. Catherine Zeta-Jones was pregnant while filming this movie and accepted her Oscar ready to pop with her daughter. Queen Latifah and Renee Zellweger were nominated also nominated for Oscars.
I came here just to share the pregnancy factoid, so I'm glad someone else beat me to it. 😊 I always thought they did such a good job hiding her pregnancy considering 1920's clothing silhouettes.

Pretty stacked cast, honestly. For name recognition, Renee Zellwegger was basically Hollywood's sweetheart when this came out. Richard Gere was pretty much already kind of 'icon' status. Catherine Zeta-Jones was already a leading lady and very well-known. Queen Latifah was famous, of course, but I feel like this was really her biggest movie at this point. She'd done television and she'd had supporting parts in other successful movies, but this was a step up in my opinion. I'd say Bringin' Down The House was her first real lead in a movie and it came out the year after this. Name recognition, though, is definitely up there with the leading cast just because of her music career. Then you've got people like Lucy Liu, Christine Baranski, Taye Diggs, Colm Feore, Chita Rivera...crazy names in this movie.
Little bit of trivia. Richard Gere took tap lessons for months before filming. I'm not a HUGE Richard Gere fan, but I think he did an amazing job.
To me Renee Zellweger was the most famous of the moment. The biggest name at the time of release but Richard Gere would be considered just as famous at the time but just in a different place in his career. Catherine zeta jones was very well known and popular at the time but was more third place compared to Zellweger and Gere.
I love all the songs so much - even the ones that are a little more silly or less commercial. All so good for for different reasons. I honestly can choose a favorite.

John C. Reilly (who plays Roxie's husband) is actually the lead in one of my favorite movie musicals (and I daresay, a pretty underrated one) called Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox story. It's ridiculous and absolutely a parody, but the music is great, and there's a really star-studded cast. Highly recommend it.
16:10 and this is where the "Son of Sam" law comes in these days. It's a law that prevents criminals from profiting off their crimes. Due to the sensationalism of crimes in the media, some criminals could actually get rich off of the paid interviews, books, or movie deals. But the Son of Sam Law prevents that from happening.
Its sad that the "uh uh" was going to be the most memorable moment for you in this movie, when Catherine Zeta-Jones gave one of the all-time great movie musical performances in this. You'll notice the movie cuts around Renee and Richard's dancing a lot to "hide" (for Billy's tap dance, you never see Richard's top half in the frame with his feet). But with Catherine (especially in "I Can't Do It Alone"), the cameraman, the editor doesn't have to do any trickery. Catherine just owns it.
I saw this live on Broadway with Wayne Brady as Billy Flynn. It was amazing and WB was perfect!!

This movie is a masterpiece and iconic in my eyes. I feel like Moulin Rouge got more love at the time but personally I’ve always thought Chicago was way better
There isn't a bad song in this movie, but I love Mr Cellophane. This poor man is one of the few innocents in the whole story.
That lawyer Billy Flynn is none other than the epic Richard Gere. "Pretty Woman", "Primal Fear" Richard Gere.
There is also a deleted scene of a duet between Queen Latifah and Catherine Zeta Jones. Oh, and a wonderful movie of CZJ's is The Mask of Zorro (1998) if you haven't seen it. She mesmerized everyone when that film came out.
It made sense that they cut the duet between Queen Latifah & CZJ. The movie was supposed to be done through Roxy’s eyes & Roxy wasn’t there. I understand why they cut it, but if you didn’t watch the extras on the DVD you wouldn’t have ever heard it. They sounded great together!
Richard Gere: "Pretty Woman", "An Officer and a Gentleman", "Cotton Club" and a lot more. He was in Grease on Broadway when it first came out. He was also a gymnast and he played the coronet and piano in "Cotton Club".
Fun fact -- Catherine Zeta Jones was like 5 months pregnant during those strenuous dancing scenes. Talk about a pro!

The one who doesn't speak English is actually innocent. She says something like she came home to find someone had beheaded her husband with an axe. She didn't do it but because she's a foreigner and can't speak the language she is blamed.
If I have one qualm about this movie its them not cutting the tap part in court or hiring someone who could actually tap dance. It hurts me to watch as someone who dearly loves tap and has tapped for over 10 years

CHICAGO is a live show and has been running since 1995 on Broadway, 8 times a week. (Still running) This movie just upped the musical's Brand and people still come see the Broadway Show!
Hugh Jackman started in musical theatre in Australia in the 90s. He won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 2004 for his performance in The Boy From Oz. (No, nothing to do with The Wizard of Oz)
26:17 Colm Feore is an amazing (no pun intended) actor who you might have seen in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, as one of the corporate wickeds in Harry's company. He has many stage and screen credits and I saw him live doing Shakespeare once. Left us speechless.
I love Colm Feore -- always love seeing him show up in a movie or TV show! I know he's legendary for his Shakespeare at Stratford (his Mercutio was supposedly iconic -- he did an entire monologue while pacing his sword that was slowly twirling on the floor).
What I don’t understand, is how Queen Latifah is more beautiful now, than she was even then. She was drop dead gorgeous in Last Holiday, I love anything she does with LL.

Cell Block Tango is my favorite song -- plus it tells each of the stories of the women. The woman who kept saying Uh, Uh when she did her dance she's the only one who had a white scarf as opposed to the real killers who had red scarfs signifying blood. The woman who had the white scarf was innocent but because she was a foreigner she couldn't get the help she needed. (Russian at the time when they were looking for "Commies" everywhere.)
You asked about the candy scene. Apparently there was a pause in the filming or they had to refilm a scene. It turns out that Catherine Zeta Jones was pregnant and she was beginning to have a bit of a baby bump. So they show several scenes of her eating candies so they could say she was putting on weight, to disguise the fact that she was pregnant!
I also love the song "Cellophane Man" it's a rather sad song about Roxie's husband and how he feels invisible. The actor does a great job of making you feel sorry for him. If you like Disney movies the same actor did the voice of Wreck It Ralph in that film.

im assuming someone already said this and i dont know the exact words, but the "uh uh" girls story was i think about her being framed. which is why her scarf was white ad not red. but so this makes it even more sad bc shes the one to get the death penalty

Fun reaction! I am impressed with the editing, to get some of the music in while still avoiding copyright claim. I had a reaction channel but had a hard time editing in such a way, so I gave up on the endeavor even though it was a lot of fun sharing reactions. My favorite song is "Cell Block Tango," or "I Can't Do It Alone." I think this is one of the best movie adaptations of a stage musical, and every actor nailed their part.

Catherine Zeta Jones was actually pregnant during the filming of "Chicago." Normally she has a very slim waist but you could see during that dance that she was a little thick around the middle. Same in the finale dance. That's where the remark about laying off the caramels was about, (implying she was just gaining weight.)

I love Chicago, but the characters are awful people with the exception of Hunyak (the ballet dancer) and Amos. The music is great though, and seeing it on broadway/live is incredible, but this movie version is outstanding. I love John C Reilly's version of "Mister Cellophane"

Ohhhhh my goodness, ok, I was gifted tickets to see Chicago on broadway for my 15th birthday, and I think that was a yea or 2 after the movie came out. And holy shit it was AMAZING! It was very stripped down, but literally the same as the movie, but the VOICES are so much better. You sit there in awe at the talent. Broadway Billy Flynn made me angry they cast weak voiced Richard Gere. If you EVER have the opportunity to see this live, for the love of god, please do, 10/10 totally recommend
I was the Hungarian character in my school play. What she says in her monologue (at least in the junior version) is that she was accused of decapitating her husband while her lover held him down, and that she didn't do it, but when she tried to explain it to the police, they didn't believe her.

If you like Queen Latifa, you should check out her duet with Catherine Zeta-Jones, "What Became of Class?," that was cut out of the movie. It was included as a deleted scene on the DVD and is such a good song! I think you can find it here on UA-cam.
