I had a total melt down on the start line... my first ever rally in Qatar

  • What's it like taking on your first road book rally and first desert race? Here's my experience doing the Qatar International Desert Baja with QMMF. The nerves full on got to me, it was tough.
That was the toughest thing I've ever done, bar my accident recovery. As my first ever roadbook event, first time in the desert and first time in the dunes it was definitely a dive into the deep end! The Qatar temperatures is what made it quite so brutal...with day two's temperature peaking at 55 degrees the heat was overwhelming. Riding, focusing on the navigation, reading the terrain and trying to keep the pace up with a body battling overheating meant for an intense race. Pausing or slowing even slightly resulted in near unbearable intensity.
At one point, deep amidst the 80km of sand dunes, I had to ride 2km at a time. Focusing just on making it another 2km. And then another 2km. I knew if I stopped the heat would be worse, I also knew I was not going to quit! So I dug deep and kept going!
I'd say it was a bit of an emotional roller coaster. There is so much new information and regulations to get your head around, it was hot, a new type of terrain and a complex navigation system using road books, and did I say it's hot!? 39 degrees and humid. HOT. I went through moments of sheer panic, stress levels escalating, anxiety and even moments questioning everything I'm doing, am I mad?? In these moments I worked to break down what I was tackling. Taking little chunks at a time, deep breaths and trying to calm my mind. I realise these emotions are normal and I'm certainly not going to be quiting! But yikes I'm nervous.
Here's my ranking in the Qatar International Baja desert race:
    🥈 2nd place in Women's
13th in class of 26 riders
22nd overall of 40 including moto and buggies
    Only 25 finished the race...!
    🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
Shattered would be an understatement!! But I would rather be completely exhausted from the hard times that breed success and see me grow, than well rested from achieving nothing! The Qatar rally was a serious push on my body, my mental capabilities and required some serious grit to keep pushing on. I genuinely didn't realise it was possible to sweat so much or use so much brain capacity all at once. There were moments of pain. Moments I questioned if I could make it. But fighting on meant that the satisfaction at the end was just that much more epic! I did it!
I'm on a mission to prove that I can, even with a slightly reconstructed body! No excuses! Fight on!

Wow, such a cool experience you shared. Thanks for the great wrap-up, clarity and happy satisfaction came along with what felt like an exhausted peacefulness, apologies if too feely. :) I think my favorite moment was seeing you get the medal, seeing the presenter so pleased that he is bouncing on toes, then goes for the fist bump. Best words of wisdom, just kept going 2K, then the next, then the next.

Hi Vanessa, this was an amazing video, and such a gruelling adventure, definitely not for the fainthearted! I found the reconnaissance quite scary, having to navigate using rocks and bushes as landmarks, and I really felt for you as you were close to tears, perhaps doubting your abilities. You did an amazing job bringing us the footage of this, so wild adventure, and long hours riding in temperatures reaching 55 Deg! This is a massive achievement for your first ever rally. When you arrive back here in the UK you'll need your winter warmers, as it's getting close to freezing. Thanks for sharing this great adventure.💗

Good information and presentation. Dehydration is a good thing you covered and the side effects.
The colon is what helps the body keep hydrated by design. (if part is removed more h20 intake is required).

In the forces it's all about repetition-repetition-repetition - the more you do it the greater your confidence and self belief becomes, certainly the case I guess with roadbook nav. In Afghanistan we were in similar heats, but in full gear, helmet, body armour and at least 100lb of kit on your back. But we had acclimatised to the temperatures, you didn't have that luxury so big respect for dealing with it. We were drinking at least 6L of water a day, and as you say your body takes a while to get used to that, that and the extra calorie consumption due to strenuous activity. It's actually really difficult I found o keep drinking water, you know you have to, but it's hard work, takes discipline to keep sipping - do you find it difficult to get in all the food and fluids you needed? Well done on a great result, be interested in what you have to say about your adventures at the ABR festival this year. Regards, Mike

Trick you hopefully have been told, but just in case from someone that lives in the Tropics. Hydration: Take a mouth of water EVERY 10 minutes. Not a mouthful, but what you can swallow between breaths. That will keep you as hydrated as possible to do. Take a mouthful just before you start. And drink immediately you stop. When it is that hot, you lose water faster than you can absorb it.
Old performance tip. Don't try to go faster. Try to go "more perfect".
Another possible useful point. If you are having the craps when doing stuff like this, check what is in you hydration/energy suppliments. If it has fructose in it, you may have a sensitivity to it ( about 30% of people do) that is magnified by the heat, exertion and dehydration. I discovered mine in my very first triathlon. Not pretty.
I like the comment " I look like I have been riding in the desert all day" Actually you don't. You look amazing. I wish I looked like that , any time. I also wouldn't need a sex change...

That looks like an amazing adventure. I'm currently in the process of building a Beta RR390 rally bike :)
Don't go crazy with those nuts and legumes. Lectin rich foods are usual not great for people with autoimmune conditions like vitiligo. I have been able to use diet modifications to deal with my own skin issues and autoimmune arthritis and Raynaud's syndrome. Take a look at Dr Gundry's Plant Paradox book. It's a good start for wrapping your head around the problems with certain plant foods.

@@TheGirlOnABike Okay Cool thnx a lot. I wanna get a ADV but cant decide yet. I wanted to go for a 890 but i think i go for a 690 R. Its way lighter even with added Tanks later etc. So i can use it for pretty much anything! MAybe some Rally in couple years ^^
But the Questio is always, lowering or not? Does it still ride the same? Hard to say... ive got a RC390 which has like 830mm seat height and i can touch the ground with both feet but not fully. It doesnt matter since with one leg im totally fine on stops. But for little offroading maybe abel to touch the ground to an extent is super important? WHen ur on the bike ur on, doesnt matter right. But sometimes you need your feet. SO i was wondering!
      Thnx for the answer Rob
