    Your honesty in this video is refreshing, a lot of whst is seen here on UA-cam is about the ego of the vlogger. Your admittance of failed shots means use mere mortals with a less than five percent sucess rate have a hope. Well done Steve, you encourage and inspire.

    Again, thank you for inspiring video Steve! Im a big fan of Black and white, as I think it brings more curiosity and imagination from the viewer. The lack of colors make one look at the images more and search for hidden gems. But I really do enjoy your color work very mush as well.

    Thanks Steve, Another good production. One thing that I have certainly learned since moving to the UK is that while winter is often gray dreary and cold that these more northern latitudes afford a lovely yellow light due to the low sun angle in winter. This can also deliver dramatic long shadows as well. Some compensation for the short days is the yellow gold light that can warm a scene without waiting for golden hour.

    • @SteveONions

      We do get excellent light all day (cloud willing) at this time of year so there’s no need to pack up or start shooting infrared instead.

    Love learning from your videos and photos. Moved to herefordshire recently from london and not used to landscape work. You are my new main inspiration for landscape. The way you communicate and how you explain stuff is plain and simple. Love how you use two films and compare them. Absolutely delighted to have discovered you Steve

    Interesting. Wouldn't have thought of Velvia to pull reluctant colour from these grey winter days. All my colour went into the freezer once the leaves had dropped! Perhaps I'll pull a roll out & see what I can do with it. For me though - the HP5 shots were lovely. If capturing the mood of being up on a hill on a grey day is what you were after - you succeeded. Have a good week!

    I must admit I have been following this sequence of Vlogs pretty closely whilst thinking about going back into film photography. It has been a real benefit of having the Vlog images on Flickr as you can get a real feel for the actual quality of the final result compared to the lacklustre standard via UA-cam. I think I might make, or would make some different choices at times, but that is just creative freedom and is to be encouraged. Overall I have a gained a lot from this series, which I have enjoyed very much. Thank you.

    A great insight for people like myself who are not aware of the film types that work in different scenarios. There is a film guy who posts images on FB I see and it came to mind watching this that he must use the same film on every shoot - well, on the ones he posts to FB. The colour palette looks to be velvia. Interesting to see how you observe a scene and decide what will work and what won't. As ever your images are always good to see and from a location perspective I can see I missed lots of locations that were close to me when I visited the PD last year. TFS.

    I do remember using TRI-X 400 back in the day...put it in the tin cans, add chemical rinse, dry, then to the enlarger, then more chemicals, and dry...If I remember right I could shoot some shots...and have the print in less than 30 minutes...

    I must start shooting with some e6 films, though I often seek out more subtle colours using a Portra 160. Even though I'm using TMax 400 for my analogue 365, HP5+ is my go to B&W film.

      Thanks Mark. I generally prefer working with C41 colour over E6 but in Winter especially the latter can really lift the mood. I still favour B&W overall but it can be very limiting for dawn shoots which is my favourite time of day to be out.

    Hi Steve. Thank you for the lovely video. I have to agree with the other commenters here - the HP5+ shots seemed to capture the mood best. Hi Wesley. I’ll be honest that I have never shot a roll of Tri-X but have used Plenty of Tmax400. I usually favour Ilford films because I worked at their HQ for a couple of years and feel a certain loyalty to them. I love the look of HP5+ when scanned but liked Tmax 400 in the darkroom.

I saw a lot of your vidéos, and, you seem to like the Ilford HP5 +, I like it too. I honestly have never shot a roll of Tri-X which even surprises me. I suppose it was always the easy availability of Ilford materials in the days before the internet and then in 1990 I started work for Ilford so I developed a brand loyalty. I have used a fair bit of Tmax 400 though.

    Steve, how do modern films compare to films from the height of the film era. I think I've heard you mention that you have some old films in the freezer (I assume they are no longer available). Are the variety of films today still easily obtainable for film photography? I would assume the quality today is better just because of technological advances but I wondered with the limited market if film varieties are drying up.

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  5 років тому

      Hi Philip. I don’t shoot any discontinued films but there are still a few which are produced in the same way they were perhaps 50 years ago. These are from the likes of Foma and typically they are a bit grainier and less sharp than modern films. The latest film types such as Ilford Delta and Kodak Tmax have a different silver halide crystal structure which makes them somewhat sharper but also less flexible in development compared to older films.
