    Thank You Oliver. I've watched a lot of videos on this topic, but this is the only one that worked for me.

    I've had nothing but latency issues and bugs over the decades using DAW's. I just use a 30 channel mixing desk and my DAW as a multitrack tape recorder to save the headaches. Saying that, I don't use ProTools because I detest the subscription business model.

      Yeah analog mixing desk all the hardware on the desk and the mixbus into Reaper, does delay compensation too but I saw that it was a little bit off but I don’t mind. 😊

    When I use HW insert in Pro Tools (latest version) with my Apollo X6, apparently latency is compensated automatically because the outcome of your test on my system is NO DELAY between the tracks. Even by listening to the same track in parallel with HW insert there is no perceived phase shift... It's a sort of mistery which is apparently non documented anywhere, but It works for me...

      I have had something similar happen when I used to have an Apollo. Weird!

    yep, that why most people just use the Digi design converters to get the automatic delay compensation. Plus there easier to mod then apogee and this new Chinese crap parts in converters.

    Well done thanks ill be going through this process soon as well
    Some whack comments from people that obviously have never touched hardware in their life. If they have then their mixes would sound horrific with everything that comes with no delay compensation for hardware inserts
    Good video thanks

      there is no way I would work with hardware inserts without HDX or Carbon. It's just too error prone and your "bang on perfect" is never sample accurate. This has been an issue on the native Pro Tools systems for well over 10 years now. Back then that was what got me moving to HDX and I havent't regretted it one day.

    • @OliverShillito
      @OliverShillito  3 місяці тому

      @@martenthielges1179 I’d love to move to HDX. I likely will one day but for now that’s about as close as it’s going to get I reckon!

    And in the newest update it got worse. In Logic you have a plugin that calculates the latency. Ridiculous not having the same in PT. Thanks :) I have that VLA II Pro

      It’s a great utility compressor! I do miss the Logic ping function. You’d think after 20 or so years, Avid would follow suit but nooooo

      Hello mate, I'm going crazy here because it's impossible to replicate this scenario on my PT session. I have all setup like you, but the first (VLA) track routed to a second track via Buss, just records silence. Did everything I could in PT IO window. I'm using an Apollo X6 and X4. I would like to ask you for support on this one via email if possible. Please let me know if you have the time. Much appreciated. Best regards :)

    I've tried 100 times and watch many videos I completely understand how this works. My problem is not delayed its actually head in time and there is only a few threads of people that talk about this issue. I have never found the solution to my problem other than going HD. I gave up a few years ago.

    • @OliverShillito
      @OliverShillito  3 місяці тому

      How random. That must surely be a miscalculation in the ms maths? Either that or something freaky going on with the drivers!

  • @dunbinhad

    I am dealing with this issue right now after fairly recently switching from Logic to Protools. I could not believe that Pro Tools did not have a ping tab like logic to automatically calculate round trip latency. With all of the crazy deep features that Pro Tools has it is wild that they have not added this. People have been asking for many many years and it doesn't seem like it would be that difficult only leads me to believe that they want this to be a pain so that people are more interested in buying there interfaces that handle all this for you. My question is how does this process look when you are using a patch bay and signal is going through multiple pieces of hardware? I mean if you only need to do this process once for different sample rates that isn't to bad but if you are having to do math everytime you want to set up different signal chains that is kinda ridiculous. thanks for the video dig the channel.

    • @OliverShillito
      @OliverShillito  3 місяці тому

      Thanks for watching! Different chains of gear make no difference providing all of said gear is analogue! The single calculation of round trip latency will do the job for you! I used to have a setup similar to this with patchbays etc and I never had a problem. I work mostly in 48 so it's mostly set and forget for me but I agree it's ridiculous that Pro Tools doesn't do this automatically unless you drop 10 grand on a HDX system. As if charging us an absurd fee every month wasn't enough already!

      @@OliverShillitoThat’s why I quit ProTools many years ago, from version 10 they quit supporting RTAS plugins and those were the ones that I had and could afford. Basically I had to buy all plugins again if I wanted to upgrade above version 9. I kept using my old system with a Digidesign controller for some years but when upgrading my system I switched to Reaper and never looked back. I’m not going to invest in something that is basically not future proof again. I never buy anything with dedicated hardware again and also no descriptions and even no hardware ecosystems too. Now after some investments I could basically throw the computer and converters out and buy a 24 track tape machine and have everything working by patching some cables 😊

    Are you using HDX or Native? Is delay compensation on? Do you still have the same issue if you bounce and import? Why would you play from one track and record to another?

    • @OliverShillito
      @OliverShillito  3 місяці тому +1

      1. Native
      2. Yes
      3. Irrelevant.
      4. Have you even watched the video?

    • @sidhsolanki9300
      @sidhsolanki9300 3 місяці тому

      Still not clear on what you are trying to illustrate. If you place hardware inserts on tracks, PT will compensate for the delay across all track individually on playback and you should not hear any delay discrepancies. At least with HDX. If you re-record a track by bussing internally, you will record the round trip delay, as you have shown.

    • @OliverShillito
      @OliverShillito  3 місяці тому

      I’m not on HDX. Native does compensate for delay but the timing needs to be manually accounted for. As I illustrated in my video. Otherwise if you use a hardware insert without calculating the delay, the timing will be off. This isn’t a thing on HDX but it is on Native.

    • @OliverShillito
      @OliverShillito  3 місяці тому

      I believe from reading that this process may not be necessary if you own an avid interface but I never have so I can’t comment on that particularly!

      I don’t use ProTools but Studio One. The external hardware plugin (Pipeline), has a test button, and it just does it for. I find it very weird that ProTools doesn’t do something similar.

    • @OliverShillito

      I can’t comment on reaper as I’ve never used it! You’d need to check their manual for how they handle outboard connections!

    • @Studio22mix
      @Studio22mix 3 місяці тому

      In Reaper you have to set the delay compensation also but it’s pretty easy and calculates it automatically by a ping signal.
