Stevie Ray deserved better than to be the shadow of Bowie, don't you think? The two playing together would be great, but the guy deserved his own spotlight, I guess.
Q the omnipotent Yeah. Stevie Ray was playing a concert one day, and Bowie was in the audience, he loved the performance and asked Stevie if he wanted to open up for him on his upcoming tour, STEVIE SAID NO bc he wanted to work on his bands (double trouble) upcoming album, Texas flood. SRV was practically unknown at the time, while Bowie was a huge superstar, and it’s considered one of the most gutsy moves in rock history. Texas flood was a HUGE hit, and they collaborated from time to time. Thanks class for coming to my rock history lesson!
This is a classic one from David Bowie, my ex and I used to have fun with this song every time we heard it, we would always laugh, cause she would sing the China girl part for real, those were good times.
I've been listening to Bowie for a while but I've never came across this song until recently..now I've got it on repeat playing x5 today & this song is my drug
I once heard a statement that you can make ANY love song you can think be about drugs. Although this is too easy with the title, I'd like to think he really did have that fling with a beautiful chinese girl.
@@valvalvalval25 the girl in the video (whom he did indeed date for a while) is actually from New Zealand. The original "China girl" was in fact Vietnamese and told Iggy Pop to shut up a decade before.

Probably the best rock/pop song that ever hit Billboard's Top 40. That is, if you exclude the other genres like alternative, classic rock and metal. The bass line is seductive, the lyrics are thought provoking and the SRV solo at the end completes one of the best songs in modern rock.
RIP David Bowe. There is a fantastic documentary that ran on Showtime a few months ago. Legendary producer Nile Rodgers has a great antidote of how this song was put together. Bowie was pure genius.....
Krysten55 Stevie Ray Vaughn played that little guitar riff. He went on to have one amazing solo blues career! Legendary musician but sadly, he died back in 1990 I believe in a helicopter crash.
From Songfacts: "In this song, the singer warns the China Girl that he will destroy her culture by imparting Western values of materialism and superficial beauty ("I'll give you television, I'll give you eyes of blue,I'll give you a man who wants to rule the world"). Paul Trynka, the author of David Bowie's biography Starman, claims the song was inspired by Iggy Pop's infatuation with Kuelan Nguyen, a beautiful Vietnamese woman. She was staying at the studio and Bowie encouraged the couple's relationship. It has also be argued that the song is about heroin addiction, as "China White" is slang for the drug. "
I'm thinking it's a dual meaning, with both meanings given being what makes the most sense. A musician like Bowie had the skill to pull that off and for it to still sound good and not overly abstract.
