I see game studios going the route of TV streaming services and each one will have its own game pass subscription once the transition to full digital is made...and it'll cost more a month for you to have these subs than it would to just get a physical copy of a game/games you would normally buy in a month anyway. The "every studio having a streaming service" model isn't really working anymore for TV and I hope that video games see that and don't make the same mistakes. Things are definitely gonna get less cost efficient for the customer once we live in an all digital environment for gaming and I hope we as consumers can stave off that future for a while longer.

I really wish Homebrew would explode into the mainstream and we'd all be playing the old systems with NEW games instead of playing the same old same old on emulation for all of eternity at this point. I wish they'd re-release these old systems like the PS1 with new games physically.

A lot of great points. Another point to consider, especially when discussing JRPGs, is how much easier region/geo-locking will be with an all-digital library. I have a Switch and love to play visual novels, especially otome games, many of which don’t release in the States. So I’m glad to still have my JP account to buy from the Switch eShop. But if Nintendo ever geolocks it, I’ll only be able to buy from physical. And if physical carts aren’t produced…well, there goes that. So all digital could make playing games from other regions even harder than it already is.
My library is hybrid overall - some physical, some digital. I would miss not only owning a physical game, but also things like midnight releases. I’m an introvert but I went to the TotK one back in May and wasn’t expecting much, but it ended up being a blast. Our GameStop even had trivia and stuff planned and everyone just seemed excited to be there. That stuff is part of the experience too.

Great video. We def will see a digital only future. At that point im done buying new games. I have plenty in my backlog to play. If game companies dont want my money im perfectly fine not giving it to them. 😂 if theres enough of us not buying games they may rethink their decisions but lets face it there is a new generation of gamers that clearly dont mind buying digital or doing a subscription model. I think us collectors live in a bubble where we think "u gotta be crazy to not buy physical" but in reality we are more of a minority than we think. The gaming world will stop catering to us collectors soon enough.

I love physical games and the majority of my purchases are still physical. I can definitely feel it's fading away. Probably still safe for the Switch for another generation, but I could see it being eliminated on Playstation and Xbox next generation.

I will never understand or agree with people who want the digital only future especially after what we've seen. Delistings and in the case of PT we saw companies have the ability to fully stop you from downloading games on your account, the inablilty to play games without the latest patch (removed content, nerfs, censoring), games being tied to said account that should anything happen to it then you lost access to what you bought (nevermind the license issues that happen now).
I will always buy physical, and import if it doesnt exist over here. Only games that I buy digital are those small games by indies who obviously do no have the means to do so (but more and more seem to be able to). A company like Sega and RGG pulling that card is not something I support, so I am importing the upcoming Yakuza Gaiden. Games are also just too damn big for my internet to handle. 100+ gb of unnecessary bloat that will take over a week on my internet. Most games are still fully on disc, anyone who says otherwise isn't paying attention. I fully believe any game that can't fit on the one disc should be mandated to release on multiple like wht square is gonna do for FF7 rebirth and (I can't believe I'm about to praise them but) and rockstar did for RDR2. Digital only will cut out a good chunk of people in the US. I unfortunaly do see this as an inevitability though. They've been trying to weasel their way out of it for a long time.
For anyone who does still prefer physical media and wants to know what games do release fully on disc, check out "does it play . org" (without the spaces and quotes). I can attest to it, as I've been testing this myself before this site existed and it matches my findings.

I think de-listings will become a bigger problem in an all-digital future and it will be impossible to obtain certain games legally because of this, much like what happened with games that became completely lost with the 3DS eShop closing and that will happen when the Xbox 360 digital store closes next year. When I think of Atlus not releasing physical copies of a game, it reminds me of how PAL regions only got Shin Megami Tensei IV digitally and now it is impossible to get the game there. So now if people who live there want the game, they have to buy a 3DS from a different region and a physical copy of the game from that region because the 3DS is region locked. So gamers there are going to have to pay a high price to get a game that wouldn't be the case if only Atlus hadn't cheaped out and denied a physical release in the region. Which is a real shame especially considering that Shin Megami Tensei IV is one of the greatest games ever made in my opinion so it should be available for an affordable price for those who want a copy.
The move to subscription-based gaming in an all-digital future will eventually become horrible for gamers because the availability of some games will become even more limited. I suspect Microsoft doesn't just want to create an all-digital future, but also wants to make something like Gamepass the standard was that games are played, so they want a subscription-based form of distribution to eventually replace buying individual games completely because they will make much more money from it. If this happens, the cost of a service like Gamepass will go up greatly and it will very likely be tier-based, so many games won't be accessible unless you pay a higher monthly fee and it will be up to a company and not the player as to which games will be available with each tier. What games will be available in the basic tier will likely depend on how much money publishers are giving to the service, so unless you are into only the big bloated formulaic AAA titles that gamers tend to complain about, then you're probably going to have to pay more to play games that you actually like. I really hope a scenario like this doesn't become a reality and if it did, I'd probably give up on modern gaming completely and stick to playing older games that I can actually own and choose to play whenever I want.

I don't own a big collection of physical games, but I love to have them. I like the choice we get of digital or physical. I collect more for the Switch. I'm more digital on PS5 or Xbox. However, if I want to buy an expensive game there, I always find a physical copy for cheap, whereas on their digital stores, it's very expensive.

Physical games won't die, Microsoft can try but so many people still rely on physical copies due to lack of internet or just general preferences. Microsoft has abandoned gaming, and consumers, it's no surprise they're pulling this. Sony is still largely producing physical copies outside of Collectors Editions (which is baffling) and Nintendo is still a champion of the physical market, and thats part of the reason the Switch has done so well. Is it a coincidence that the Switch has twice as many physical games as most systems at this point in their life? I think not.

@@armandostockvideos8386 Name the last major game Valve made that had any mainstream success. Valve is better than MS, partially because Valve has competition. MS does not if they lock you into a walled garden ecosystem. MS cares more about milking subscriptions and having a 'platform' instead of making games better. MS has had no single exclusive on the XSX that wasn't a live service, or just broken. Valve has sales, MS rarely drops any prices for their games. The two aren't remotely similar.

For me drm-free digital is just as good as physical, and any console that can be emulated or homebrewed is effectively drm-free. Also i do agree, we'll probably see less discounts on digital games. To me that's the true inflation of game prices. In the past with used games, devs got $0 on those sales. With digital 50-90% sales devs now get some money. There might be a future where we'd be lucky to get 10% off on Black Friday.

I have 0 issues playing games digitally, however I am a physical gamer/collector as well. But my viewpoint is different from most. I like physical solely for nostalgia reasons honestly. I love being able to open new media and inserting the disc or cart into the consoles. Takes me back to my childhood every single time. That being said, I 100% agree that removing physical entirely is gonna have some bad effects. Those digital sales aren’t going to be as good as they are currently. Why? There won’t be a reason to make them cheaper since there won’t be a different option to compete with. As you said you also cannot trade or sell of digital games. You technically never own digital games fully. If a game goes D-listed, sometimes they remove the ability to play entirely on digital and along with that, the “online only” games will become useless if servers go down. Atleast If you have a physical edition, you have a physical shelf filler to remind you of the game. Not ideal of course but it’s something. The digital future leaves so many questions to be answered, but what we do know is it’s here and isn’t going anywhere.

  • @DarioKalen_Kagenui
    @DarioKalen_Kagenui 11 місяців тому +2

I wholeheartedly agree with literally everything you said. 💯
Not only do I love getting physical games and looking at my collection, but there's things like the ones you said with how, undoubtedly, digital prices and sales are gonna go worse once there's only digital. And as you said, what if you can't access the internet, or your main console breaks and you can't access those games and stuff. With digital there's always all these extra problems that could be fatal for us, and there's the possibility of the company just shutting off the access to the games, like for example Ubisoft with the inactive accounts (it was just super inactive accounts from long ago, but this is just the first step). You bought the game, but in digital now you don't own it. We're really going into a dystopian future in that aspect. 😂
And I'm not sold on subservices either tbh. Gamepass is great with the immense catalog and all that, and I loved playing the old Nintendo games with Switch online (during those couples of weeks they put it for free) and having such easy and quick access to it, but I don't want it for this to be the norm now. And we'll see as you said if this trend of buying 10 services for month doesn't burn out soon.
And apart from everything else you said, I don't think places/sites like Amazon Prime or normal game stores are gonna be able to make sales if it's only digital. Nowadays you can easily find at least 10€ off (doesn't equal to $10 but it's probably the same discount they do) of any new game coming out, and easily 20-25 off from older games even those that are still selling relatively good. I don't know how that market works, but I don't see them doing that for digital games. There's always the smaller sites that always do crazy deals on game codes, but I don't trust them as I trust official shops, nor do I trust buying a digital code as I trust a physical game.

Imo, if it's that expensive to make few physical copies, they could have a queue and only release physically on-demand once a small batch of confirmed sales are filled per game.
This could be done entirely by a standalone third-party company.
Just like some book authors, who only print physical copies on specific demand.
Since it's for collection, buyers might be okay with waiting a few weeks/months to get their first-hand physical copy.
Even if it takes a bit longer to be produced, it should lower the prices.
However, companies would rather have them pay more instead.
Even if this system I mentioned could make money flow in the long run, I guess it's more enticing for them to cash in on hype and fomo with "limited legendary collectors editions."

    • @R.Williams
      @R.Williams 11 місяців тому +1

It absolutely would substantially raise prices to print on demand. The developers don't actually print the carts or disc's themselves plus boxes etc., but have to send them out to be manufactured. You get a lower price per unit the more you print. If you had to wait until 1000 or 2000 units were ordered or however many were cost effective, you may be waiting awhile or forever until they were printed. I'd assume if the goal wasn't met, the order would just be canceled. That's just my take on it anyway.

I’ve been telling my friends that once every single game is digital, I’ll be done with modern gaming. The point you’ve made holds true. Can’t re-sell if you choose to. Can’t trade if you choose to. I don’t know how long ago this was but I remember I read an article a while back that PlayStation had an issue with a few games that were digital, and when people went to play them there was a licensing issue. Something about the license expiring on the rights or something. It took PS a while to get it back. It’s scary to think that we’re heading in a direction where licensing can lapse and you’ll no longer to be able to play the game. This sucks for the collectors who truly game and just have them in the backlog. I can’t justify buying digital. I guess it just has to make sense. Idk.. I’m not happy about the future of gaming.

Regarding Limited Run games, as someone living outside the US they're not an option for me. I've not checked recent if they do international shipping, but if they do it'll likely add an extra £20 to £30 for me on top of the asking price. I like what they're doing but if they don't have an option for non-US collectors, I don't have any interest in them. As I said, that may have since changed, so maybe I need to double check.

Personally, when physical goes away, I'll just quit buying games and go playing old games through emulation. Both are digital, but in one case I don't pay. Yeah I might be not "respecting the medium", but the medium doesn't respect me either when it de-listing so many games recently. For example, my first game bought on PS4 (Physically thankfully), Digimon Cyber Sleuth was delisted when Hacker Memory came out. To make it even worst, the storage is so small in modern consoles that you can keep only around 9 at once- Meaning you'll have to delete games, and lose them forever if they are de-listed.

Alan Wake 2 was 'almost' the straw that broke the camel's back, suggesting close to the here and now a digital-only future. I have some digital games, but seriously, I don't want physical games to die out for obvious reasons. Maybe an all-digital future would be fine if [and this is a big 'if'] they make seemingly impossible changes such as changing the servers and technology - keeping the games forever, rather than delisting them. Then again...digital data gradually loses information and so on over time [from what very little tech knowledge I have], so there's seemingly no win-win situation.

This is a great question! I totally agree with you regarding the worry about the prices of digital everything going up after physical games are gone. Yes, there will be companies that will keep producing physical games like LRG and the likes as long as it's profitable, but digital will take over, it's inevitable! Do I prefer physical copies? Absolutely! But like everyone else, I also like saving money! My game purchases have gone way down since the past couple of years, and now I'm just more patient with a ton of them waiting for a deal. But certain series I'll always buy day 1 (like Marvel's Spider-Man 2, I can't wait), I just can't help it! I think that we all just need to be more selective in our purchases going forward, because if people keep pre-ordering everything (especially digital) than the industry will just set it up as standard practice and bring the prices up! Great video and keep up the good work!

I won't lie, with Front Mission I'm buying the game twice one physical one digital. It's because I want to have the game day 1 and I want to support the game because they aren't popular and I worry if me and like-minded people don't buy, they'll stop making them.

There is relatively recent example of how limiting and transient digital anything can be - Metroidvania called Vigil got removed from Steam, just like that. IIRC it was because of some China related political not so "hidden" message devs had placed in game, so the publisher pulled the game.

Some good points, and im not sure how I feel about an all digital future, I would highlight a counterpoint being sustainability there seems to be a lot of plastic in physical games that can't be recycled, and also the space they take up.

I'm a 100% offline gamer. I never buy digital, I never pay for subscriptions, I never connect my consoles to the internet. If a console comes out and there is no way to buy games in it I won't buy that console. The reason I didn't get a series X is that you have to connect it online to set it up. I have a huge game collection going back to the GBA and PS3... if new games stop being released I think I will be fine.

Companies have taught me not to trust digital only games, if anything I'd buy only with heavy discounts. No way I'm paying 70+ for a digital only that may disappear randomly or gets patched into censored oblivion because it offended 2 people on a webpage.

I very, very rarely sell my games so I'm generally ok with digital versions because they seem to go on sale more and it's very convient. But there's a pretty big caveat in having cheap easily accessible hard drive space. Like if I can just keep buying sd cards for my switch and never actually delete games then I can not worry about losing access after the store closes down. But like I know people who have lost access to their steam accounts and lost hundreads of games, and that's not cool!

I always prefer physical. My kids and I have both the switch and ps5 so we can just trade the carts or discs between each other to share. Also I own it. I got tired of LRG because of the long wait and better versions being released on Play Asia.

I’m not sure about Playstation and Xbox but for the Switch, I have noticed that the West tends to push digital games a lot lately. Japan and Asia seems to still prefer physical games though and thankfully I live in Asia so I haven’t face much issues with imports. While my game collection is a mix between physical and digital games, I still much prefer physical games when I have disposable income to spare. There’s just something addictive seeing and feeling the cartridge box in your hand. Besides, browsing through secondhand games brings me so much joy, especially finding gems for great prices.

I am not a fan of the digital gaming scene. I was really looking forward to it before I saw how these companies were implementing it. It has been going toward digital only for a while now with the discs no longer having the game included. Most are a portion of a game, or just having the disc as a license/key and forcing the download of the game. There are too many cases now that the physical copy only includes a download code, so all you have is a case.
I try to buy physical with my Switch every chance I get, but it is so difficult when the cost of the games rise to $80+, sometimes $100+ in a matter of a month. Very few stay at MSRP. I am having issues getting ahold of Grandia and Ryza 2 physically, because they are in the $80 range. With how many games there are and what I can spend, as well as upgrading my PC gradually, I just can't do it. Digital becomes more and more easy, but I fear that delisting, or that error not allowing you to play a game you purchased because a Check-In is required that keeps failing for whatever reason.

The day that physical games disappear is the day that I stop buying games. Physical games IS gaming to me.
I buy some digital games to supplement my collection when it is more convenient to do so but if the next SMT or Fire Emblem were just digital then I am not going to buy them.
Luckily I think it will take a long time for Japanese games to go all digital and sites like Play Asia will supply English translated games that didn’t even get localized until the day I die.

Both sides have their merits, and the prices being higher for one or the other has variables. Nintendo is an outlier because they feel their IPs are always worth full price regardless of medium type. But, pending on genre or even developer you can sometimes find the games cheaper physically. Sure I’ve paid 2x retail on a handful of games, but I’ve gotten games at 1/3 of retail many times over, and sometimes sealed.
If there is any games that should be purely digital it’s sports games, they come out annually (usually copy/paste) and end up as garbage in bins until the end of time in local game stores, it’s been that way since the old days.
If and when all consoles go digital only, I will probably step away permanently. I do have a physical library backlog spanning 4 generations and I’m sure it’s enough to last the rest of my life.
Hopefully they think this over much longer, this could very well lead to another gaming crash with the way they like to price digital games especially if they no longer have to compete with physical media.

Digital games are more expensive. They are selling outdated sports titles on their stores at full retail price. Games like star Ocean are 60 on the Xbox store. I can pick up a copy at Gamestop for 10 bucks. I wait until the games come down and then buy them. You would think they would update their prices to compete with the 2nd hand market, but nope.

Xenoblade was done that way due to the pandemic, it was even the stated reason. Also the Xbox sales were that way due to availability, once again due to the pandemic, Series S was sitting on the shelf while the Series X was not, Microsoft has just wanted a digital future for a while and the time for them is now. I think the Limited Run thing is due to their new owners, Embracer who have connections and see a niche market of consumers they can utilize for profits.

However if Sony goes all digital, i'll admit that'll hurt pretty bad. At the very least however it'll save me space in my home, and I won't have to deal with the whole paying extra for indie games that get physical media... The whole 1st party scene however is going to have a field day with it i'm sure.

Majority of games are on my Series X, and I really don't like using gamepass because i ened up not finishing most games. My oled switch is for my indie games. I'm in the same boat I guess, you don't own "digital games", physical games you mostly can sell, and no platform or game company has anything to say about that. I don't personally see Steam and other monopolistic companies going into direction that one could sell digital games, so it definitely is nice to have physical games to balance this. In the end, if you can't sell something, do you really even own it.

    • @322ss

And btw - you can check how Adobe has operated in software side of things, after they stopped selling packaged products - they brainwashed their customers to think digital only and subscription only is OK, and people didn't revolt, and prices started to go up. Of course pretty much all the profit in such scenario goes to software companies, but I bet they are not going to sell their products cheaper even though now they don't have to pay a manufacturer for making a disc and the packaging and all that stuff.

Will never understand the hate for digital with how convenient it is. The you dont own it argument is silly as theres always a way to access your bought titles and methods to back them up as well. People pay with their wallet and as long as these companies need money they will listen to the consumer. I think physical gaming will still be around just more niche given how empyty games come now.
