The Finnish translator, Jaana Kapari-Jatta is also brilliant, she invented some words for the books that are still commonly used in the Finnish language. Her translation is like 20/10 rated. We adore it.
Yep, literal perfection!
Like what like what? That's really cool btw, it's like how Shakespeare invented words that are very much in use now.
@@nohandlethanx Like Hoqwarts = Tylypahka and muggle = jästi for example :)
@@schwartzy65 Oh, I see... Do the words have a double meaning to them?
@@nohandlethanx Some words atleast partly kinda, like for tylypahka (hoqwarts) tyly means rude or harsh and pahka means burl that grows on trees :D
I’m from Finland and i have grew up with just these books. Its really cool to see them on your video🥰
You are from Austria, Mr.Mozart
I reckon it’s Griphook on the back cover. I think it’s the pointy ears 👂 that does it.
Agreed
Totally!
Possibly but since he is a goblin I would picture his body/head to be smaller
Thank you for the video and greetings from Finland! 🇫🇮 It was fun to hear your thoughts about these book covers (although I also prefer the newer ones). The translations into Finnish are excellent indeed 👍
I love how colorful and very detailed covers of the books. The faces are a bit unusual. Hedwig's picture is beautiful.
The grave says different letters, because in Suomi Tom Riddle is “Tom Valedro”.
The same is with the locket. R.A.M. because it’s not “Black” but “Musta” in Suomi.
I like how in different languages they adapt some names.
(I don’t know Suomi, I just googled, so if i’m wrong, please, correct me!)
P.S. it’s Griphook on Deathly Hallows! with a bag full of gold
I’m finnish and that’s correct!
Correct
How would you like it if you went somewhere and they said "Maria in our language is Zetiboo. So your name is Zetiboo from now on" I think the translaters should respect the character names
@@lazyhomebody1356 Except that no, in Harry Potter, the names have a meaning, so since the books are aimed at children, it's better to help them understand this meaning
Also, for the very specific case of Tom Riddle, you HAVE to translate his name to something that does "I am Lord Voldemort" in the language
In french for example, most of the character names were left as they were, but Tom Riddle became Tom Elvis Jedusor (which is a super awesome translation, Jedusor meaning something like "destiny's toy", I love it ^^)
@@anaiscardot6674 Wow, that is complicated! But now I understand. Glad I'm not the translator
Great to see a video from Finnish translations, thank you!
On Order of the Pheonix, I think the person on the down left corner is Sirius, as he has dog ears. On Chamber of Secrets cover the two people on the background are Lucius and Draco Malfoy. And I've always thought the structure on the top right corner of Deathly Hallows is the top of the tent the trio was camping in. And, like others have mentioned, the person on the back of Deathly Hallows is supposed to be Griphook or some other goblin.
And did you notice, there something that looks suspiciously like a rat tail hanging from Crookshank's mouth on the back cover of Prisoner of Azkaban. This reeeally through me off as I kid when I was first reading the books, that detail in the cover made me 100% sure Crookshanks really did eat Scabbers!
Personally I've never been a too big fan of this cover art (I'm Finnish), but, as you said, it's truly unique!
Thanks for that information. It helps to see it better.
I'm sure Scabbers escaped, despite being almost gobbled up!
I don't think these are in print anymore. Nowadays the Finnish translations are sold with the newer international covers or the Minalima illustrated versions.
As a Finn, I'm not a big fan of these covers, but they're pretty iconic! After I got the last book, new covers started to be more common and they look STUNNING! I was at first sad that I had the old weird ones, but now I'm glad I have them🥰
You are by far one of the greatest Wizarding World collectors that I have seen. You guys really know your stuff and I will continue to watch your channel. Thank you for giving me something to do when I need a Break.
Books!! I’m so glad to see a videos about books again. They are the videos I always make sure to watch. Love seeing a whole set (1-7) of different covers. Please do some more on different translations?
Very interesting interpretations of the characters. Thank you for sharing, Peter. Loved these books.
The covers are stunning! So much effort put into the artwork! Great vid Peter!
These books are truly unique. Thanks for sharing them with us! I'm still trying to add them to my collection 😃
Hello from Finland!🇫🇮
Tammi isn't a woman's name. It means oak and it's the name of the place they printed the books in.
Don't know what inspired the big noses...
I was wondering that too. Maybe the artist thought it more of a fairytale look? I don’t know. Nonetheless they stand out and are interesting.
Looking into Mika Launis's portfolio, I'd say the prominent noses are his style of illustrating - could find other books with his art and there are some big noses on those too :)
I love the covers there so unique and well done, I love how different the art style is, I’ve never seen anything like it. 😁
The artwork is very interesting. It reminds me of old fairy tale type books. I’m kind of a stickler for things to be correct, especially with HP. The scarfs didn’t show house colors. . The Malfoy’s didn’t have white blonde hair, etc..I think it leaves too much room for speculation on who the characters really are.
Good morning Peter! It always makes my day when you say hi back! 🥰
Awesome covers. 👍 Thanks for showing them to us. Nice video. 👍☺️
What a great art work!.. Vary unique!! Fabulous collection!
Great video, more like this please. Your enthusiasm for the books is lovely. I'm all about the books not the films so much. I wish things were more book related than the films.
I like these. They are really interesting illustrations, thanks for sharing. 😊
Hello from Finland! Love your videos and Harry Potter :)
Hi Peter! Love the artwork on these books! I think it’s clever and fun to find Tammi in the artwork. My favorite book of these set is the Prisoner of Azkaban. The Deathly Hallows back cover artwork reminds me of the goblin at Gringotts, perhaps it could be Griphook? What gave it a way to me was the hands on the Gringotts bag. Thank you for sharing Peter!
Was so happy to get this video finally! Greetings from Finland :)
Hi, can you recommend any finnish web site to search for this edition? I've been looking for it for a while now but I can't find them... Thanks in advance for any help!
Oh wow these are beautiful editions as a book lover and collector I love these 😃💕📚
Morning Peter, morning collectors. Thanks for the videos Peter!
Hi! On the seventh book, if I'm not mistaken, the person is supposed to be Rufus Scrimgeour.. He is holding a bag that contains the artifacts from Dumbledores will.. Also the thing in the corner of the front cover is the tent that the golden trio travels in while looking for the horcruxes.
I think the fifth is my favorite because I like the attention to detail and we don’t always see the pensive scene on that.
Also, it really shows how much James and Harry look alike.
I love the little Pheonix on the last book :D
Thankd for this! Big fan from Finland
Nvr clicked so fast! I love Finland it’s very special to me!🤍💙🇫🇮 And i love most of there metalbands and i played 12 years guitar with alot of metal🥰 I love the country and the snow and winter and autumn seasons there wich means aurora season💚
And the Finnish are unique, I just love that country ive bein to lapland and my fav animals are reindeers❤️🦌 And i just love Finland and it’s my happy place❤️🇫🇮 But the covers are very cool and unique and magical looking😊Thats what i love about Finland they think differently😉
Hi Peter you deserve 2 mil I love your videos!I hope one day you hit the 2 million subs!!
Hello from Finland! I grew up with these :) And I also have the first three books with the pre-movie font! Edit. In the fifth book cover, that's not Lily, it's Sirius.
The Chamber cover is the Malfoys. He is holding the diary
I love your shirt collection 😩
I was expecting not to like these, esp since the Malfoys don't even have blond hair. But I LOVE these covers. My favorites are Gilderoy Lockhart, and Scabbers' tail hanging out of Cruikshanks' mouth
These are soo cool!!! What a set of books! Wish i can buy those......
Interesting to see how other cultures interpret non native authors! Peter, you seem to totally recovered; I am very pleased to see you doing well!
I think those are the Malfoys in book 2 and Lucius Malfoy was holding Tom Riddle's diary. In book 5, I think it was Sirius Black in his half-animagus form below James Potter. The character at the back of book 7 is probably Griphook, the goblin who helped them to infiltrate Gringotts. Thanks for the great videos as always, Peter! Keep them coming.
On the Prisoner of Azkaban, Crookshanks has Scabbers in her mouth lol the tail is sticking out! And I think Griphook is on the back of the Deathly Hallows
7:20 You're forgetting that when your name comes out of the Goblet of Fire, you're under a binding magical contract to see the Tournament through to the end. So there's no backing out of it and Tammi's parents cannot pull her out of it...
Tammi is the name of the publisher for Finland. Tammi means oak, it’s not a person.
The artwork is definitely different and whimsical. Love Hedwig,.of course! You're right...that toad-faced professor is straight up nightmare material. XD
Oh my god my country! When I was young I was so confused by those covers and long noses. :D it's so nice to hear "professional" opinion of those! I have attended to couple of events where the translator of Finnish books has been but I haven't hear anything about the illustrator of the covers before. Ps. You might need few more Finnish language lessons but good try! 😉
Great video!
The funny thing is that, Ron who is described with a long thin nose... Dumbledore also, I believe. So the illustrations would be actually accurate for those characters. Altthough Ron's nose looks broken to me. 😅
I think those 2 people on book 2 are Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy. Lucius is holding the diary he will slip to Ginny.
On book 7 the upper right corner might be the room of requirement behind a tapestry, with diadem flying out, and smoke from fiend fire. Not sure why it shows trees. On the back it looks like a goblin with pointed ears and holding a money bag. Maybe it's Griphook.
Narcissa is NO WAY that unattractive, lol
Hey Peter, glad if you did not have the experience with Abe Books
sending books damaged but a couple time in the past when I was
dealing with Them that is what I got.
I had no idea that the Country of Finland had so many large nosed people.
Overall they seem to be especially gorgeous people, so I think the illustrations are hilarious
I think it is Griphook on the last book because of the long fingers
I love those pre movie font ones.
On Chamber of Secrets the two characters in the background are the Malfoys as you can see the older one holding Tom Riddles diary in his hand
Cool books! I just have to point out on the sorcerer's stone cover you pointed out the queen, king, rook, knight, and castle... the rook and castle are the same piece. you meant bishop. I'm sorry but I had to point it out. otherwise well done with another cool addition to your collection.
OMG this is one of my favourites
Great set!
Are there any sets that're are just down right wacky and weird?
I think the pirate fellow is one of the Gringots employees
It is malfoy and draco nr.2 book
Never realized how valuable these books have truly become. Just come across an article about a 'first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' which was bought for £12.99 and sold for nearly £70,000 at auction in the UK. I was gobsmacked when I read that then I came across another article where a 'first edition Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone' book sold for a record $471,000 at auction.
These figures are mind blowing!!! No wonder Peter has stored his rarest books at an undisclosed location.
Peter I have a question. What are your thoughts on a cinereplica Harry Potter robe on Amazon? Do u thing I should get one? Personally I think the ones at universal at to expensive for my wallet lol. I found on for 80 dollars, do u think I should make the purchase?
The green thing on the last book might be a tent? It seems to be slightly flapped and folded like an old fashioned tent may have been. Just a wild guess that could be very wrong. The artist went a very interesting route with the drawing of the characters. Buckbeak’s head looks more like a heron than an eagle. I don’t know if that is typically how they draw hippogriffs in that country and that is why. I like seeing the different countries take on the characters though when they look nothing like what we are used to from the books that were made for the US. Do you have the Scots version of The Philosopher’s Stone? I saw one from another channel and it was fun to see the Scottish slag used.
I never expected to see Harry with a Jerry curl.
LOL
In the chamber of secrets cover. I REALLY believe it's Lucius and Draco cause of the devilish looks, we run into them at Gilderoys book signing, and he is holding a book, which is Tom Riddles Diary.
I think the girl on the half-blood prince cover is Lavender Brown.
I wish Halloween town did a subscription box would love to have marlins talisman and the amulet called the gift they are so cool check them out
Can you please make a video about the Dutch version of the Harry Potter books. Please
It would be nice if you could do the Greeck Harry Potter books.
They are really good. I'm of course a bit biased. But I love the Danish version.
I would think on the second book that it is Malfoy as he is holding a "diary" of sorts to put in Ginny's cauldron. The last book I would think that was Griphook or one of the other Goblins.
Another of your videos popped up and it’s from 2years ago when you moved 1,700 books and I was wondering how many you had now?
I think the character on back of the 7th book is illustration on griphook
Do you have the nerdy ink editions
Any news on more translations in Scots?
I sent you this supposedly hardest Harry Potter quiz ever on fb messenger. Is there a better way to get the link to you?! I’d love to see a video of you doing the quiz!!!!
Hi from Finland! 🥰🇫🇮
Are you doing a Potter Collector sale this summer?
Interesting Artwork 🤔
Peter Tammi has to go back to the tournament because it’s a Binding Magical Contract!
Do the American versions have any premovie fonts or did they just take those fonts and use them for the movie? I've never seen any American versions that have any fonts other than the one we all know and love now. I got my first book back in 98 and it has the font used in the movies.
Mary GrandPre, the US illustrator, is the inventor of the Harry Potter font we know and what is now used everywhere. 🙂 The US books is where it showed up first (Mary didn’t know it would be so widely used in the future… pretty awesome.)
@@ThePotterCollector that's really cool! I don't blame them for picking it, it's a fantastic design and she obviously did an amazing job coming up with it.
Wow nice books
Do you only collect official merch or do you also collect custom made things? There’s this person called Kadivideo and she made VHS interpretations of the HP films. They look really cool.
Tammi means oak and it's the name of publishing company. I think it's fun how the name is hidden like that. I do think the characters are kinda ugly but I think it makes them unique and I prefer that over "normal" pretty
Never had seen those. I bet the next you'll show are gonna be the swedish editions heheh
And on the 2nd cover it may be the Malfoys, as it said in the books he did dress like that, but Jason in the films changed him. And JK allowed it.
Hello Peter I am your old subscriber and I watched your collection and saw you having Gujarati Harry Potter book and I am also Gujarati please do a detailed video on Hindi translation
I think that person on the back of book 7 is supposed to be Griphook🙂
Heck yeah 😍❤️🇫🇮
Harry was the literal antithesys of Voldemort on these covers with that nose
This is AMAZING! I am 1/4 Finnish and how cool would it be if I learned my family’s language by reading Harry Potter! Where did you source these? I only see $200+ on EBay
My favorite book is Chamber of Secrets would love to find the book in Finnish!
I think that the back of the deadly hollows is actually Salazar Slytherin
the last page character is banker
In the right corner of Deathly Hallows, it looks like something from Godric's Hallow. Thinking the church.
Sweden have one more collection with a diffrent covers on the books
I love special books revew
The guy on the back of Deathly Hallows might be Griphook.
love Harry Potter Books Swedish edition
Reading the books in your mother-tongue is good but some things like the names…
Place names, characters’ names and spells were lame in our translation!
Tom Marvolo Riddle becomes I am Lord Voldemort but in Hellenic🇬🇷 that doesn’t work!
So, in our language the name became:
Άντον Μόρβολ Χερτ - Anton Morvol Hert
Creating the name:
Άρχων Βόλντεμορτ - Arhon Voldemort
Árhon in ancient Hellenic means Lord.
When I grew up a little bit and I read the books in English… it felt more “natural” in a way! The names and all these things weren’t cringey!
Maybe the guy on the back of the 7th is the snatchers that try to take Ron to the ministry after he left Harry and Hermione in the forest
TAMMI! What about the unbreakable magical contract that the Goblet constitutes? She must have died horribly...
@kivikunnas Tammi was a lovely girl named after an oak tree
i think the guy on the back of deathly hallows is Griphook
My childhood books, yeah they aren't the prettiest (especially OOTP) but I love them anyway ❤️
"She's a fantastic... beast." 😏
