I've been using the Altair G1 for about 18 months now and have been very happy and pleased with its performance. I thought I'd need an ipad to use it, so bought a mini ipad which has gathered dust since as I'm a roon user and roon just sees the unit and plays to it. You can adjust all settings on the Auralic from a browser which will obviously run fine on android, and is essential for us old guys who will struggle to see the tiny menu writing on the screen. Much more fun playing with eq and filter modes whilst sitting on the sofa listening to it, don't sleep on this functionality as its a real boon. The Auralic software and browser is fine enough and better than most, but once your a Roon user everything else is very obviously a second choice. I have just recently convinced a friend to join the streaming dac club and so I bought him an Eversolo DMP-A6 and have spent the last week setting this up for him and using it instead of the G1 in my system. It makes a change for me to have intimate knowledge of a current unit that's picking up plaudits and to be able to compare side by side. For the money, the DMP-A6 is a steal, a capable unit with some nice features which sounds excellent and I've enjoyed this last week with it. I took it out of my system this morning and have returned back to my own G1, and I'm happy to be back to the G1 sound which is undoubtedly superior, but not dissimilar at all. Maybe the 'Master Edition' A6 would close the gap a bi,t as it has a better power supply and the better clock chips in common with the Auralic, but its nice to know for a fact that the G1 sounds better than a unit that's grabbing a lot of headlines and testimonies, even if it is significantly more expensive. For me its also nice to have my DSP EQ back too, as I have a tiny bass trap in my room and I've added a single point EQ to take this down by 1.5db @100hz and this works superbly in my room. I missed the G1, even if it doesn't have VU meters! For my use I use such units with the screen turned off - Roon shows me anything I need and its right in front of me, my Dac don't need to put on a light show as well :) Your review is excellent as always, and as you are talking about a unit I know fairly well, I'm even more convinced you know what you are hearing and our judgements are not divergent. I have just this week put the Eversolo DMP-A6 in my system, replacing an Audiostore Vortexbox ripper/streamer. I use it with my Chord TT2 and MScaler and I can honestly say it is a revelation - all aspects have improved, most noticeablly detail retrieval, soundstage (width &depth) and bass - in that it is tauter (if a tad leaner). At £759 it is an absolute bargain. I'm yet to listen properly to its own DAC...this Altair would need be going some to beat it as a streamer. It's value is incredible!
I love Auralic products, they fly below the radar (although making a push with online reviewers lately). Their stuff is so well built, rock solid connection, and the app is excellent.
Another fine video, Tarun. Now, I dare you to review, arguably the most hyped audio product of the decade, the Eversolo DMP-A6. I finally got mine after weeks of waiting, due to the ridiculous level of consumer demand. It's crazy good for the money but I'd love to hear your take on it.
Great review as always. To answer your question about the future of hifi- I see something like this product crossed with the Lyndorf amp with all dsp eq & room correction. More control over hi and low pass filters, and stereo/mono subwoofer choice would be great too. 👍
Great video as always. I have an Aires G2, which was initially used for streaming via Qobuz. I recently added a Melco to the system, which is used as a server and the G2 used as a player. I still have my modest CD collection and have been importing albums to the Melco. This has led to a significant improvement and probably completes my digital journey. I say probably because I see Auralic are soon to release the G2.2 and G3, although I have ruled out the latter based on cost and it having features I don’t need. The G2.2 is out of reach for now so I’ll have to resist the temptation to loan one.
Bluesound Node X, all the way! I'll swap the display for flawless 'whole' house Bluetooth support everyday, my patio speakers, multiple headphones, workstation speakers. Displays are sexy but honestly who doesn't't use the app as a remote control anyway. Not to mention the headphone amp is nirvana. Not to mention Linear Power Supply kits are available. Not to mention external DAC connections are available.
Great review Tarun, thank you. My streaming journey is brief, i bought a Wiim mini 8months ago to see if streaming was for me. I replaced it 2 months ago with a bluesound node, im delighted with it, very easy to set up and use. I was wondering if u would ever consider reviewing any of the more modern ProAc speakers as u love your old ones so much. Id love to see a comparison between new and old.
To recount my digital journey, I am committed to the Auralic system having a Vega G2.1 and an Aries G2.1. I agree completely with you that a good preamplifier will outperform the built in Auralic volume control, and I would also emphasise that anything you can do to reduce noise on the Ethernet input is worth doing. I have an English Electric internet switch and two iFi iPrurifiers, and they reduce background hash substantially, making the music less harsh and improving the dynamic range.

Since you've asked for it: Two and half years ago I bought my first Hifi stereo digital device (in the sense of digital ins and - outs) a Cocktail Audio X45 streamer/Dac/CD player. It has broken down twice within three years. Then I bought me a Mini DSP SHD, so I could and can still stream and play my music while the X-45 is in repair or will be in repair. A big surplus of the Mini DSP is the Dirac soundcorrection, what a difference; playing music using the Dirac settings or bypassing it: Day and night, seriously! The big surplus of the X-45 would be its ease of use: Great remote control, very clear big enough display, guiding the user in using the very intuitive built User Interface of this versatile device. But all of this is useless when the device is not reliable, brakes down. Apart from the money I payed for it I feel sad to be let down by such a beautiful, versatile and easy to use device. What should have bin a source of joy has turned in to a source of annoyance. The Mini DSP SHD is controlable using Volumio software. This software is...OK and the Mini DSP SHD does not have a clear big colourfull display like the X-45 does. So I still consider buying me another luxurious Dac/streamer anyway, just because of the ease of use. I'm on the fence looking at the Eversolo DMP A6 and the Eversolo Z8. I guess that would conclude my journey in the HiFi hardware world: I now have an Audiophonics S 400 et HPA Purify D Class amp, Kef R7 speakers, SVS Micro 3000 subwoofer, Mini DSP HSD with Dirac soundcorrection streamer/player/pre-amp, the luxurious, easy to use streamer/player would complete my HiFi setup.
Great review once again . My digital journey is approaching a plateau . I had a meridian 808v6 ( cd player, pre amp with analogue and digital inputs and Roon streamer ) that I happily used for several years before moving onto a dCS front end . Currently using a dCS Rossini Player Apex (dac , cd player and streamer ) with the separate dCS master clock and very happy with it . I use a Melco N1 as a server into the dCS . The dCS built in streamer board to my ears sounds better than many stand alone streamers that I tried ( right up to the Aurender N20). The dCS digital volume control Is very good but I am toying with the idea of buying a separate pre amp
Thanks Tarun. I bought an Altair G1.1 a few months ago and am really enjoying listening to it whilst it settles into my system. I upgraded from a Cambridge CXN V2, which is a great player, but the G1.1 is a clearly more accomplished in every way and is getting the best out of my amp and speakers. The CXN V2 was my first streamer and I purposely didn’t want to spend any more money at the time, I wanted to be certain that I was going to be happy to move from CD’s as my primary source to a streaming front end. The experience with the CXN V2 gave me the confidence to spend proper money on the Altair (which I am glad I did). I have ripped my CD’s to a hard drive which the Auralic plays as well as internet radio. What more do you need! One comment though, I have to say I do still marginally prefer the sound of my CD’s played through the Auralic’s DAC to the equivalent stream from Qobuz ….
To me streaming is a convenient 3rd after vinyl and CD's. I have two WiiM Pros and two BlueSound Nodes. I like the ease of the BluOS as well as the terrific WiiM App. I use separate DACs on all of them. As for the future? Costs will come down while at the same time more features are added. Fo over 20 years I was in the PC business in the UK (now back in the US) and if the digital audio market follows the path of the PC boys, DACs and streamers will come down in price. Dell made a huge success with the direct to consumer model while maintaining excellent customer service. I believe the same will happen in the digital market, not so much the analog. Good channel.
Tarun, an encompassing and excellent review as per usual. Digitally, I'm using Raspberry Pi 3B+ boards with streaming capability via JustBoom's (Volumio) OS. Atop both RPi units are a pair JustBoom DigiHATs w/ SPDIF & Toslink outputs that interface to vintage DACs from Meridian and Headroom in my AV and Head-Fi systems respectively. Access to the OS is via an Android smart phone.

I can see how this product creates an excellent base for a high quality, space conscious system. A great way to achieve audiophile sound, while not upsetting the esthetics committee. Bought my first CD (NAD) player ca.1984. Remember how awful some CDs sounded back then? Hence things like the infamous CD Stoplight. Still doing physical media, CD transport, DAC. Someday I'm sure I'll dip my toe in the streaming thing, but I enjoy the commitment of playing a silver disc.

I have a Node X for headphone listening. In my work office, I use a Cambridge CXN (from a USB thumb drive with FLAC files). Running to my vintage Luxman receiver I use a Wiim Pro connected to a Shiit Modi 3+. The home streamers get source music from my Roon Core. I am pretty happy with all three. Thanks again!
I am definitely a separates guy. Very happy where I have landed after some mistakes and learning. I can see this Auralic being great for many and they won't suffer like I did! 😀 Thanks for showing the innards! I would LOVE to see EverSolo come out with a stand-alone streamer with the option for internal storage. That would have me changing from my current streaming set-up!
Owning both Auralic Aries G1 and Eversolo A6 i can tell you that Eversolo as a stand-alone streamer is far easier and better sounding than Auralic. When I compare Eversolo as an integrated Steamer /DAC to Auralic Aries with separate boxes ( in my case Hermes DDC + Pontus 2 DAC ) I can confirm external boxes make the difference but Eversolo is not ridiculous. Worth mentioning that Eversolo can easily be used without a tablet since it has a very good user interface on it’s internal touch screen . Also speaking streaming SOFTWARE and FIRMWARE updates are key issues . and I must point out on the software side the Eversolo development team has been very prompt to debug and release very effective updates . Auralic development team has ever been quite slow and sometimes disappointing comparatively. ( I have been using Auralic lightning ds app since Aries mini). Denafrips has recently been really messy on the firmware side ( I hope they will use external software company for their new announced streamer …)

So far my digital has been through my Marantz sacd 30n using Heos. I'm an Amazon Music HD subscriber and I use streaming more than previously as it's an wonderful avenue to explore new music. Wonderful review!

Another great review Tarun. My digital journey has brought me to the Auralic Aries G1.1 into the Gustard r26, both purchased after your reviews. My amplification is provided by the Exposure 5010 pre and Exposure 3510 monoblocks, which I would be very interested to hear your views on, even if you use the 3510 pre.
I tend to stay digital and have the requirement of 5 HDMI's for that purpose. My system while fun and engaging is not resolving enough for me to sweat the finer audiophile points. I made my choice when I went for a Marantz 8015 which heats up less than my old 7010 and much less than separates. At 94 sensitivity my speakers have one job: 7.2.4 and they perform admirably though I have to tune some to ear for my room.

Interesting question. I am at a cross roads. I have a Linn active system and a Naim CDS3 and Pre Amp. I am looking at Burkhart Anniversary 10s which I intend to demo using the balanced inputs from my pre amp to speakers. That allows greater flexibility in external boxes DAC and Streamer. I will demo using their Platon box. Alternatively do I keep my current kabers, which I have had for 15years plus and then purchase two Akurate amp boxes with digital cross over. At the same time look at Select DSM. A lot of listening and unfortunately can't do in one point. It's my last big push to change if at all. I still favour the stable red book CD, and recently purchased a CD in the xrcd format which does not require upgrade in equipment . Outstanding clarity and space between the players. Sound stage well it had greater depth and width more a kin to a concert, raw was the verb to describe. My musical presentation I prefer is slightly laid back and a clean top end but not bright. Any pointers in my journey would be welcome. Great review.😎🎵🎵
Tarun, I’m not not a streaming person so anything I say could be interpreted as biased. I could care less how anyone else listens to their music. I am a physical media listener so my opinion doesn’t carry any weight here. Pretty impressive one box solution and well built with a few exceptions which you mentioned. I am a parts quality fanatic as these little things do effect the overall as well as subtle differences in what we hear. I’d change those caps out with the same value Nichicon branded ones and give it a good burn in before rendering an opinion. I must say that I like the shielding provided internally in this product. This is one thing some digital products are lacking and the importance cannot be denied. Unshielded sections in streamers and most other digital products is foolhardy and stupid from a design standpoint so I like this product because they went the extra mile. Other than the component issue mentioned by Tarun about the caps, I would say you could do worse in other similar products and this brand has an excellent reputation for customer service. Excellent review Tarun. Pointing out what was lacking in component choices on their point shows you know the importance of this. I’m proud of your attention to it. Parts quality cannot be denied and at the price point of this product and higher, I expect to see better quality components. This wasn’t their flagship streamer so I guess they scrimped for the bottom line. I am hard on component quality because it matters to the sound quality and on that I am very hard and unmoving. This is a brand I would consider as a streaming customer as their products are very favorably reviewed and they back their products well. This is a no brainer for me and I am no streamer. Buy with confidence. Upgrade the parts when the caps are ready for replacement or your means dictate. Otherwise, just enjoy! Cheers Tarun!
I'm always confusing Auralic with Arylic (which is much! cheaper). I've gotten all the DAC's and streamers I need. Know refocussing on my speakers first and then on amplification. By the time I'm done with that I'm sure DAC's will have improved a lot again.
That's correct & so never mix your analog with digital in one box. Assume the digital just bought is disposable and so again, don't throw out the baby due to the bath water.
Recently auditioned a Cambridge Audio CXN V2 Network Audio Streamer, any product using Dual Wolfson WM8740 24-bit DACs just sounds good to me, plugged into a vincient tube amp and Falcon ls3/5a… I was more than happy!
Great review and I loved the follow up to the Gustard. However, it is 2023 and all of these one box solutions like the Altair g1.1 and the eversolo dmp-a6 should all have HDMI eARC. I won't buy one till they do.
@martinaston1715 - I live in a time warp so it is easy to get CD's on the cheap - second hand too. They still play flawlessly, my system was designed aro7nd CD's so I am a happy bunny. Hope you are enjoying your system too - that is what counts. I gave up chasing rainbows years ago.

Although I am happy with my Lindemann, I feel there are more iterative sound and listening improvements to be gained from the streaming content (I use Qobuz). Still, working on trying to resolve ladder DAC benefits vs digital DAC?? Also still to resolve separate DAC and streamer benefits??? Hi Tarun, a thorough review, as always. As for my digital journey, as I’m sure you know that it’s reached the end of the line for the moment. I’ve consolidated down to one system in my listening room, which means the ifi Zen Stream and Signature DAC represent my occasional use Tidal Connect gateway. However, for the last two days I’ve been playing many CDs whilst working to run in those very same Elites I spied in your review. This combination confirmed to me that my Musical Fidelity CD player is a fantastic digital source which I won’t be changing anytime soon.
I might be wrong about this but I think you can access set up via a Web interface accessed from Android or PC, but the lack of proper android or windows support is very disappointing. Of course if you use Roon it becomes irrelevant. I bought an Aries G2 streamer a few years ago. At that time it was the single most expensive source component I had ever bought, but I haven't regretted it in the slightest. The only thing I wish it had is I2S. Also Auralic are a fantastic company to deal with and really pay attention to feedback from customers.
You are not wrong, you can access the lightening set up page on any browser and change setiings on the fly. I use mine on a dedicated android tablet, with my Roon front end.
@@titntin5178Thanks! I, reluctantly, bought an old, cheap, second hand 10 inch ipad to use with my Aries G2 for messing around with settings and running Lightning DS. I normally avoid Apple like the plague. Now I run Roon on a lovely 14 inch Samsung Galaxy S8 Ultra tab and it's an absolute joy.
Defiantly try the Venus Firmware update. I must say that I was very disappointed when I updated my Pontus 2 from version 1.0 to 1.3, I was really pissed off. Then they released the 1.4 which going from the 1.3 to the 1.4 I must say did make it rather confusing. So at the time I demanded they passed me the 1.0 back. I returned the firmware back to 1.0 tried it for a week then returned to the 1.4 version and it has stayed ever since. They got it sorted finally and it is a big improvement, it really is Mr.T.
Nice looking unit. Aesthetically it looks similar to the Moon 240i (Sim Audio), and would look equally great on a kit rack. I'm not a big fan of all-in-ones but if I was the Altair would be short listed with a Leema Quasar. Both should sound great with Dali Rubicon speakers. How is my digital journey going? Mainly analogue but I use a Cambridge DacMagic to connect the TV to the amp but may look at a streamer, something on the lines of a Cambridge.
Enjoyed the review and im thinking of getting this Altair myself. I assume that the setting that does speaker adjustment for varying distances is doing the same job as the Balance knob that I have on my Naim Supernait. Keep up the good work and thankyou
I can confirm that the speaker balance is exactly how you suggest, its a dsp balance control, which Is actually useful to me. The EQ is in a seprate section and seperately selectable and gives you a lot of options.

I have no DAC and/or streamer. I’m planning to buy an ifi Zen One Signature. I have lots of CDs 💿 and SACDs…. and I am an Apple 🍏 Music 🎶 guy for the sake of its convenience. So far so good 😊
I never took any notice nor read any reviews about streaming gear, happy in my cdp and tt nirvana. The Ifi Zen Blue I bought hardy got a look in, and sat virtually unused for a year. But something clicked a few weeks ago and I just saw the convenience and huge catalogue as super enticing. I've switched! Buying LP's and CD's has now lost its appeal. I don't want my house full of this stuff. I'll keep what I've got, but streaming has taken hold and I'm looking for a good all in one streamer. The Node X looks appealing, but I'm impressed by the build of some of the Auralic gear. Anyway, it all means I'm research up on this previously ignored way to hear lots of new music...not just my cd and vinyl over and over.
If the Auralic and Gustard sound virtually identical, buy a Gustard and a second hand Node 2i, stream to the Gustard bypassing the Node DAC and save a tonne of money

Great video ! I enjoy your choice of comparisons . Based on your listening what do you think of the Eversolo streamer and dac compared to the Node X and Gustard? Is there a better combination using separates? My budget is under $1500 . Used is also fine. Thankyou for your guidance.
Excellent review as always Tarun. As you know I have an Auralic Aries G1.0 streamer with Holo Audio Spring 2 level 3 DAC and am happy with this combination. However, I'm a person who would like to have a minimum number of units and cables in my hifi system. If I was starting again I would aim to have a combined streamer/dac/preamp connected to active near full range speakers (no sub required). It seems from your review that the preamp section of the Altair G1.1 is not quite up to scratch. When I look at the ATC active speaker lineup they are not really near full range until you get to their pricey top models. Am I right in thinking there are no reasonably priced (say sub 10,000 pounds all up) high performance solutions out there yet for combined streamer/dac/preamp and active near full range speakers?

As I see it, the Naim would be superior as headphone amp to my current Lehmann Audio Linear and also for the streaming part I think it would be an overall improvement to my current set up (the original Node 2i plus Qutest DAC). If it includes balance control and parametric EQ then I presume this would allow the use of an amp that excludes these important features. I can’t find much information about this EQ so not sure how it’s implemented. EQ and balance control are features I would want within a unit like this, however at $5,000 here it would want to be damn good considering my Bluesound is 1/5th the cost, though that’s simply being used as a transport. A local audio specialist shop sells this Auralic so I might check it out.
I use both features on my G1, via a browser on an android tablet. The eq is pretty efficient and customisable, you can set multple frequency bands and alter the frequancies and q value for each. In my case, my room layout and speaker positioning were providing a bass lift I wanted to dial out, so I have a single band at about 80 hz with a 1.5db reduction and the q value tuned to get the blend I needed. The browser plots a graph, so you can see and tweek the resultant eq curve. Its a decent level of control.
@@titntin5178 That’s very useful. If the Auralic has both balance and EQ then it opens up the options in amplifier choice to consider buying when I may upgrade next year. Having said that I still feel a bit safer getting an amp that has balance and tone control just in case the Auralic failed me, then I’m stuck with an expensive amp I can’t use because I need balance and tone control. I’m thinking of checking out the new series 2 Michi amps because they may be pretty good and also have balance and tone control. Also they’re available at the local audio shop. That shop has many of the items I’m considering so it’s good to be able to audition a complete system including Sonus Faber speakers. Another amp I like is an Accuphase but they’re double the price of the Michi.

Take some time to download the Venus update. I think you will be surprised. My opinion they could have sold that as a Venus 3 and no one would have disputed the improvement. Apparently another version also on the horizon.
Hi Tarun, Another great review. I'm concidering the Eversolo DMP-A8 or the Auralic Altair G1.1 I've read good reviews for both but can't decide, Which one would you say has the best sound quality as I think you've reviewed both. It will be paired with a Bryston 2.5B3 and Totem Tribe Tower speakers.
I do not understand the emphasis on streaming. I recorded all of my CDs, about .5 terabytes onto a hard drive, I subscribe to Medicitv and UA-cam premium, and that serves as my input source for three music systems in my apartment. I’ve tried Spotify twice and it is not for me. I have a listening room that cost me $50,000. and over three years building and tuning time. What could a streamer add? It seems to me that streaming just adds a continuous stream of music for those who do not want to bother to pick and choose their own music. What am I missing?
A streamer adds amazing discoverability. The ability to discover more music that reaches your soul is worth more than any piece of equipment. Having access to Roon and a qobuz sub has been the single greatest musical and hifi journey I have ever made in over 40 years as an 'audiophile adult'. Fantastic music is the only reason to do this at all, and nobody knows even a fraction of what the world has to give...
My guess, re what you may be missing, is that you are not representative of the typical purchaser of a DAC / digital front end in 2023. Streaming may not be for you and that’s cool, you’re the sole judge of that. But streaming is the way I would guess the majority of people consume the majority of their music in 2023. Many of us no longer have or never had extensive CD libraries. The cost to establish one would be significant. The discoverability of new music and ease of access, including across multiple devices and away from home, is the primary appeal of streaming. I stream Tidal via Roon with very satisfying sonic results. I understand the quality of streaming is not quite at local file playback level but it gets close for those of us with optimised network / server setups.
I have one on demo at present , it’s sonically great ,but that App !! Grrrr it’s not Blu os that’s for sure, I’m going to demo the Cyrus XR, then decide

Thank you. A good preamp should improve soundstage, imagining, and dynamics significantly, but also the overall fidelity. I wouldn't rely on the Altair's internal volume attenuation in a system as resolving as yours. Check out the matching EVO preamp. I would be interested to see how you get on 🙂
@@abritishaudiophile7314 Hello Tarun, Quick update (as requested 🙂). Followed your "recommendation" and added a Primaluna EVO 400 Pre Amp to my system. After approx. 20 hours of "burn in time" I can report HUGE improvements. Sound stage grew wider, deeper and higher with instruments much better defined in space and tonality. Female voices give me goose bumps (eg Lori Lieberman's Killing me softly). Listening to Beethoven's 5th Piano concerto the Piano plays in front of the orchestra and the various sections of the orchestra are clearly defined in space. My dealer mentioned it might take 100+ hours for everything to be settled in - but I am impressed with the immediate results already and am looking forward to further improvements. And - of course - there is always "Tube Rolling". Thanks again, Wolfgang
I have an Auralic Aries G1 and it is a fabulous product, however, the level of support is pure rubbish. The USB DAC port just stopped working and the support team and Auralic came to the conclusion that my DAC (Mytek Brooklyn) was at fault. The Brooklyn plugged into the bluesound node and any other stream always worked perfectly. Also it is very well documented that the USB dac port is poorly implemented. Result: Auralic is asking me to pay 400 euros for repairs. Unfortunately, the support is worse than the one offered by Gustard.

Regarding your question concerning "digital journey ". I have an NAD M10 v1 which I bought during the first Covid lockdown after not buying any hifi for 15 years or so. I have to disclose that my decision was made to get the NAD not in small part because I know some of the main designers at Lenbrook. They've been customers of mine on and off over the years and as such they very kindly allowed me to purchase through their friends and family program. The amp is great but not without a few teething problems that seem to have been solved with firmware updates, which is something that you need to make allowances for on a digital journey. When you buy a product that is in effect an IOT device you have to expect updates for good or bad. I had no such issue with my old Rotel RA820 BX2 that I've owned since the 1980s (bought in the UK and was running it in Canada after I emigrated at 110V). For me, DIRAC made a huge difference, and I am now not sure I could put up with anything that doesn't have active equalization. However, there is one thing the all-in-one box does impose on me that I am not sure I am 100% happy about, and that's the ability to tinker and upgrade. I spent maybe three decades not paying attention to audio as a hobby, emigrating and raising a family, kind of put everything on the backburner. I'm now in the position financially where I can play, but although I could add external power amps to the NAD, I'm kind of stuck with the DAC if I want to stay with Dirac. To that end I may start looking at starting another system of separates in my office (less WAF issues), which will give me the chance to switch individual streamers, DACs, pre-amps and power amps around. Just to finish off, I was trying to sell FPGAs to Lenbrook years ago, primarily for OSD functionality, and the team had already started to talk about bringing in a line of "lifestyle" products This was the kernal of the idea for BluOS. Although the M10 is an NAD product, it's still really a child of this "lifestyle" product philosophy, which, if we are honest, is what most non-audiophiles are after. BluOS has been very successful for Lenbrook and has likely given them the sales needed to continue to succeed. I guess digital has effectively saved the audiophile industry by making good quality hifi more accessible to everyone and I don't think NAD/Lenbrook is any exception . Now I've a written a small novel on my phone, so please excuse grammar and typos. I love your channel as you're one of the few guys who likes to open the equipment and point out what the designers are up to and what components they're using. As an electronics manufacturer's rep I wish they'd use more of my parts, but hey, ho. Keep up the good work.
I've been using the Altair G1 for about 18 months now and have been very happy and pleased with its performance.
I thought I'd need an ipad to use it, so bought a mini ipad which has gathered dust since as I'm a roon user and roon just sees the unit and plays to it. You can adjust all settings on the Auralic from a browser which will obviously run fine on android, and is essential for us old guys who will struggle to see the tiny menu writing on the screen. Much more fun playing with eq and filter modes whilst sitting on the sofa listening to it, don't sleep on this functionality as its a real boon. The Auralic software and browser is fine enough and better than most, but once your a Roon user everything else is very obviously a second choice.
I have just recently convinced a friend to join the streaming dac club and so I bought him an Eversolo DMP-A6 and have spent the last week setting this up for him and using it instead of the G1 in my system. It makes a change for me to have intimate knowledge of a current unit that's picking up plaudits and to be able to compare side by side. For the money, the DMP-A6 is a steal, a capable unit with some nice features which sounds excellent and I've enjoyed this last week with it. I took it out of my system this morning and have returned back to my own G1, and I'm happy to be back to the G1 sound which is undoubtedly superior, but not dissimilar at all. Maybe the 'Master Edition' A6 would close the gap a bi,t as it has a better power supply and the better clock chips in common with the Auralic, but its nice to know for a fact that the G1 sounds better than a unit that's grabbing a lot of headlines and testimonies, even if it is significantly more expensive. For me its also nice to have my DSP EQ back too, as I have a tiny bass trap in my room and I've added a single point EQ to take this down by 1.5db @100hz and this works superbly in my room. I missed the G1, even if it doesn't have VU meters! For my use I use such units with the screen turned off - Roon shows me anything I need and its right in front of me, my Dac don't need to put on a light show as well :)

I have just this week put the Eversolo DMP-A6 in my system, replacing an Audiostore Vortexbox ripper/streamer. I use it with my Chord TT2 and MScaler and I can honestly say it is a revelation - all aspects have improved, most noticeablly detail retrieval, soundstage (width &depth) and bass - in that it is tauter (if a tad leaner). At £759 it is an absolute bargain. I'm yet to listen properly to its own DAC...this Altair would need be going some to beat it as a streamer. It's value is incredible!

Another fine video, Tarun. Now, I dare you to review, arguably the most hyped audio product of the decade, the Eversolo DMP-A6. I finally got mine after weeks of waiting, due to the ridiculous level of consumer demand. It's crazy good for the money but I'd love to hear your take on it.
Great review as always. To answer your question about the future of hifi- I see something like this product crossed with the Lyndorf amp with all dsp eq & room correction. More control over hi and low pass filters, and stereo/mono subwoofer choice would be great too. 👍

Great video as always. I have an Aires G2, which was initially used for streaming via Qobuz. I recently added a Melco to the system, which is used as a server and the G2 used as a player. I still have my modest CD collection and have been importing albums to the Melco. This has led to a significant improvement and probably completes my digital journey. I say probably because I see Auralic are soon to release the G2.2 and G3, although I have ruled out the latter based on cost and it having features I don’t need. The G2.2 is out of reach for now so I’ll have to resist the temptation to loan one.

Bluesound Node X, all the way! I'll swap the display for flawless 'whole' house Bluetooth support everyday, my patio speakers, multiple headphones, workstation speakers. Displays are sexy but honestly who doesn't't use the app as a remote control anyway. Not to mention the headphone amp is nirvana. Not to mention Linear Power Supply kits are available. Not to mention external DAC connections are available.

To recount my digital journey, I am committed to the Auralic system having a Vega G2.1 and an Aries G2.1. I agree completely with you that a good preamplifier will outperform the built in Auralic volume control, and I would also emphasise that anything you can do to reduce noise on the Ethernet input is worth doing. I have an English Electric internet switch and two iFi iPrurifiers, and they reduce background hash substantially, making the music less harsh and improving the dynamic range.

Two and half years ago I bought my first Hifi stereo digital device (in the sense of digital ins and - outs) a Cocktail Audio X45 streamer/Dac/CD player. It has broken down twice within three years. Then I bought me a Mini DSP SHD, so I could and can still stream and play my music while the X-45 is in repair or will be in repair. A big surplus of the Mini DSP is the Dirac soundcorrection, what a difference; playing music using the Dirac settings or bypassing it: Day and night, seriously! The big surplus of the X-45 would be its ease of use: Great remote control, very clear big enough display, guiding the user in using the very intuitive built User Interface of this versatile device. But all of this is useless when the device is not reliable, brakes down. Apart from the money I payed for it I feel sad to be let down by such a beautiful, versatile and easy to use device. What should have bin a source of joy has turned in to a source of annoyance.
The Mini DSP SHD is controlable using Volumio software. This software is...OK and the Mini DSP SHD does not have a clear big colourfull display like the X-45 does. So I still consider buying me another luxurious Dac/streamer anyway, just because of the ease of use. I'm on the fence looking at the Eversolo DMP A6 and the Eversolo Z8. I guess that would conclude my journey in the HiFi hardware world: I now have an Audiophonics S 400 et HPA Purify D Class amp, Kef R7 speakers, SVS Micro 3000 subwoofer, Mini DSP HSD with Dirac soundcorrection streamer/player/pre-amp, the luxurious, easy to use streamer/player would complete my HiFi setup.

Great review once again . My digital journey is approaching a plateau . I had a meridian 808v6 ( cd player, pre amp with analogue and digital inputs and Roon streamer ) that I happily used for several years before moving onto a dCS front end . Currently using a dCS Rossini Player Apex (dac , cd player and streamer ) with the separate dCS master clock and very happy with it . I use a Melco N1 as a server into the dCS . The dCS built in streamer board to my ears sounds better than many stand alone streamers that I tried ( right up to the Aurender N20). The dCS digital volume control
Is very good but I am toying with the idea of buying a separate pre amp

Thanks Tarun. I bought an Altair G1.1 a few months ago and am really enjoying listening to it whilst it settles into my system. I upgraded from a Cambridge CXN V2, which is a great player, but the G1.1 is a clearly more accomplished in every way and is getting the best out of my amp and speakers. The CXN V2 was my first streamer and I purposely didn’t want to spend any more money at the time, I wanted to be certain that I was going to be happy to move from CD’s as my primary source to a streaming front end. The experience with the CXN V2 gave me the confidence to spend proper money on the Altair (which I am glad I did). I have ripped my CD’s to a hard drive which the Auralic plays as well as internet radio. What more do you need! One comment though, I have to say I do still marginally prefer the sound of my CD’s played through the Auralic’s DAC to the equivalent stream from Qobuz ….

To me streaming is a convenient 3rd after vinyl and CD's. I have two WiiM Pros and two BlueSound Nodes. I like the ease of the BluOS as well as the terrific WiiM App. I use separate DACs on all of them. As for the future? Costs will come down while at the same time more features are added. Fo over 20 years I was in the PC business in the UK (now back in the US) and if the digital audio market follows the path of the PC boys, DACs and streamers will come down in price. Dell made a huge success with the direct to consumer model while maintaining excellent customer service. I believe the same will happen in the digital market, not so much the analog. Good channel.

Tarun, an encompassing and excellent review as per usual. Digitally, I'm using Raspberry Pi 3B+ boards with streaming capability via JustBoom's (Volumio) OS. Atop both RPi units are a pair JustBoom DigiHATs w/ SPDIF & Toslink outputs that interface to vintage DACs from Meridian and Headroom in my AV and Head-Fi systems respectively. Access to the OS is via an Android smart phone.

I can see how this product creates an excellent base for a high quality, space conscious system. A great way to achieve audiophile sound, while not upsetting the esthetics committee.
Bought my first CD (NAD) player ca.1984. Remember how awful some CDs sounded back then? Hence things like the infamous CD Stoplight. Still doing physical media, CD transport, DAC. Someday I'm sure I'll dip my toe in the streaming thing, but I enjoy the commitment of playing a silver disc.

I have a Node X for headphone listening. In my work office, I use a Cambridge CXN (from a USB thumb drive with FLAC files). Running to my vintage Luxman receiver I use a Wiim Pro connected to a Shiit Modi 3+. The home streamers get source music from my Roon Core. I am pretty happy with all three. Thanks again!

Owning both Auralic Aries G1 and Eversolo A6 i can tell you that Eversolo as a stand-alone streamer is far easier and better sounding than Auralic. When I compare Eversolo as an integrated Steamer /DAC to Auralic Aries with separate boxes ( in my case Hermes DDC + Pontus 2 DAC ) I can confirm external boxes make the difference but Eversolo is not ridiculous.
Worth mentioning that Eversolo can easily be used without a tablet since it has a very good user interface on it’s internal touch screen .
Also speaking streaming SOFTWARE and FIRMWARE updates are key issues .
and I must point out on the software side the Eversolo development team has been very prompt to debug and release very effective updates .
Auralic development team has ever been quite slow and sometimes disappointing comparatively. ( I have been using Auralic lightning ds app since Aries mini).
Denafrips has recently been really messy on the firmware side ( I hope they will use external software company for their new announced streamer …)

So far my digital has been through my Marantz sacd 30n using Heos. I'm an Amazon Music HD subscriber and I use streaming more than previously as it's an wonderful avenue to explore new music. Wonderful review!

I tend to stay digital and have the requirement of 5 HDMI's for that purpose. My system while fun and engaging is not resolving enough for me to sweat the finer audiophile points. I made my choice when I went for a Marantz 8015 which heats up less than my old 7010 and much less than separates. At 94 sensitivity my speakers have one job: 7.2.4 and they perform admirably though I have to tune some to ear for my room.

Interesting question. I am at a cross roads. I have a Linn active system and a Naim CDS3 and Pre Amp. I am looking at Burkhart Anniversary 10s which I intend to demo using the balanced inputs from my pre amp to speakers. That allows greater flexibility in external boxes DAC and Streamer. I will demo using their Platon box. Alternatively do I keep my current kabers, which I have had for 15years plus and then purchase two Akurate amp boxes with digital cross over. At the same time look at Select DSM. A lot of listening and unfortunately can't do in one point. It's my last big push to change if at all. I still favour the stable red book CD, and recently purchased a CD in the xrcd format which does not require upgrade in equipment . Outstanding clarity and space between the players. Sound stage well it had greater depth and width more a kin to a concert, raw was the verb to describe. My musical presentation I prefer is slightly laid back and a clean top end but not bright. Any pointers in my journey would be welcome. Great review.😎🎵🎵

Tarun, I’m not not a streaming person so anything I say could be interpreted as biased. I could care less how anyone else listens to their music. I am a physical media listener so my opinion doesn’t carry any weight here. Pretty impressive one box solution and well built with a few exceptions which you mentioned. I am a parts quality fanatic as these little things do effect the overall as well as subtle differences in what we hear. I’d change those caps out with the same value Nichicon branded ones and give it a good burn in before rendering an opinion. I must say that I like the shielding provided internally in this product. This is one thing some digital products are lacking and the importance cannot be denied. Unshielded sections in streamers and most other digital products is foolhardy and stupid from a design standpoint so I like this product because they went the extra mile. Other than the component issue mentioned by Tarun about the caps, I would say you could do worse in other similar products and this brand has an excellent reputation for customer service. Excellent review Tarun. Pointing out what was lacking in component choices on their point shows you know the importance of this. I’m proud of your attention to it. Parts quality cannot be denied and at the price point of this product and higher, I expect to see better quality components. This wasn’t their flagship streamer so I guess they scrimped for the bottom line. I am hard on component quality because it matters to the sound quality and on that I am very hard and unmoving. This is a brand I would consider as a streaming customer as their products are very favorably reviewed and they back their products well. This is a no brainer for me and I am no streamer. Buy with confidence. Upgrade the parts when the caps are ready for replacement or your means dictate. Otherwise, just enjoy! Cheers Tarun!

I'm always confusing Auralic with Arylic (which is much! cheaper). I've gotten all the DAC's and streamers I need. Know refocussing on my speakers first and then on amplification. By the time I'm done with that I'm sure DAC's will have improved a lot again.
That's correct & so never mix your analog with digital in one box. Assume the digital just bought is disposable and so again, don't throw out the baby due to the bath water.
PS,
None of these DACs have a fiber optic connection, which is pretty much available now. And Dolby 5 is coming, which needs 1 gig+ to work.

Recently auditioned a Cambridge Audio CXN V2 Network Audio Streamer, any product using Dual Wolfson WM8740 24-bit DACs just sounds good to me, plugged into a vincient tube amp and Falcon ls3/5a… I was more than happy!

@martinaston1715 - I live in a time warp so it is easy to get CD's on the cheap - second hand too. They still play flawlessly, my system was designed aro7nd CD's so I am a happy bunny. Hope you are enjoying your system too - that is what counts. I gave up chasing rainbows years ago.
You can stream your locally stored digital CDs and stream external sources as well with most streamers like this Altair.

Although I am happy with my Lindemann, I feel there are more iterative sound and listening improvements to be gained from the streaming content (I use Qobuz). Still, working on trying to resolve ladder DAC benefits vs digital DAC?? Also still to resolve separate DAC and streamer benefits??? Hi Tarun, a thorough review, as always. As for my digital journey, as I’m sure you know that it’s reached the end of the line for the moment.
I’ve consolidated down to one system in my listening room, which means the ifi Zen Stream and Signature DAC represent my occasional use Tidal Connect gateway. However, for the last two days I’ve been playing many CDs whilst working to run in those very same Elites I spied in your review. This combination confirmed to me that my Musical Fidelity CD player is a fantastic digital source which I won’t be changing anytime soon.

I might be wrong about this but I think you can access set up via a Web interface accessed from Android or PC, but the lack of proper android or windows support is very disappointing. Of course if you use Roon it becomes irrelevant.
I bought an Aries G2 streamer a few years ago. At that time it was the single most expensive source component I had ever bought, but I haven't regretted it in the slightest. The only thing I wish it had is I2S.
Also Auralic are a fantastic company to deal with and really pay attention to feedback from customers.
You are not wrong, you can access the lightening set up page on any browser and change setiings on the fly. I use mine on a dedicated android tablet, with my Roon front end.

I normally avoid Apple like the plague. Now I run Roon on a lovely 14 inch Samsung Galaxy S8 Ultra tab and it's an absolute joy.

Defiantly try the Venus Firmware update. I must say that I was very disappointed
when I updated my Pontus 2 from version 1.0 to 1.3, I was really pissed off. Then
they released the 1.4 which going from the 1.3 to the 1.4 I must say did make it
rather confusing. So at the time I demanded they passed me the 1.0 back. I returned
the firmware back to 1.0 tried it for a week then returned to the 1.4 version and it has
stayed ever since. They got it sorted finally and it is a big improvement, it really is Mr.T.

Nice looking unit. Aesthetically it looks similar to the Moon 240i (Sim Audio), and would look equally great on a kit rack. I'm not a big fan of all-in-ones but if I was the Altair would be short listed with a Leema Quasar. Both should sound great with Dali Rubicon speakers.
How is my digital journey going? Mainly analogue but I use a Cambridge DacMagic to connect the TV to the amp but may look at a streamer, something on the lines of a Cambridge.
You also have to include the good headphone amp that comes along with this unit.

Thank you. The speaker adjustment is a preset DSP setting. It will adjust the frequency response, gain, and Q factor accordingly👍
I can confirm that the speaker balance is exactly how you suggest, its a dsp balance control, which Is actually useful to me. The EQ is in a seprate section and seperately selectable and gives you a lot of options.

I always look at the Signal to Noise ratio.
The problem with R2R DACs is they have a lot more distortion which is fine if you like distortion. I prefer things to sound as clean as possible.

I never took any notice nor read any reviews about streaming gear, happy in my cdp and tt nirvana. The Ifi Zen Blue I bought hardy got a look in, and sat virtually unused for a year. But something clicked a few weeks ago and I just saw the convenience and huge catalogue as super enticing.

Buying LP's and CD's has now lost its appeal. I don't want my house full of this stuff. I'll keep what I've got, but streaming has taken hold and I'm looking for a good all in one streamer. The Node X looks appealing, but I'm impressed by the build of some of the Auralic gear. Anyway, it all means I'm research up on this previously ignored way to hear lots of new music...not just my cd and vinyl over and over.

If the Auralic and Gustard sound virtually identical, buy a Gustard and a second hand Node 2i, stream to the Gustard bypassing the Node DAC and save a tonne of money

All you need is a WiiM Mini. Spend as much money as possible on speakers unless you own some MBL 101 Xtreme.
Excellent review as always Tarun. As you know I have an Auralic Aries G1.0 streamer with Holo Audio Spring 2 level 3 DAC and am happy with this combination. However, I'm a person who would like to have a minimum number of units and cables in my hifi system. If I was starting again I would aim to have a combined streamer/dac/preamp connected to active near full range speakers (no sub required). It seems from your review that the preamp section of the Altair G1.1 is not quite up to scratch. When I look at the ATC active speaker lineup they are not really near full range until you get to their pricey top models. Am I right in thinking there are no reasonably priced (say sub 10,000 pounds all up) high performance solutions out there yet for combined streamer/dac/preamp and active near full range speakers?

As I see it, the Naim would be superior as headphone amp to my current Lehmann Audio Linear and also for the streaming part I think it would be an overall improvement to my current set up (the original Node 2i plus Qutest DAC). If it includes balance control and parametric EQ then I presume this would allow the use of an amp that excludes these important features. I can’t find much information about this EQ so not sure how it’s implemented.
EQ and balance control are features I would want within a unit like this, however at $5,000 here it would want to be damn good considering my Bluesound is 1/5th the cost, though that’s simply being used as a transport. A local audio specialist shop sells this Auralic so I might check it out.

I use both features on my G1, via a browser on an android tablet. The eq is pretty efficient and customisable, you can set multple frequency bands and alter the frequancies and q value for each.
In my case, my room layout and speaker positioning were providing a bass lift I wanted to dial out, so I have a single band at about 80 hz with a 1.5db reduction and the q value tuned to get the blend I needed. The browser plots a graph, so you can see and tweek the resultant eq curve. Its a decent level of control.
@@titntin5178 That’s very useful. If the Auralic has both balance and EQ then it opens up the options in amplifier choice to consider buying when I may upgrade next year. Having said that I still feel a bit safer getting an amp that has balance and tone control just in case the Auralic failed me, then I’m stuck with an expensive amp I can’t use because I need balance and tone control.
I’m thinking of checking out the new series 2 Michi amps because they may be pretty good and also have balance and tone control. Also they’re available at the local audio shop. That shop has many of the items I’m considering so it’s good to be able to audition a complete system including Sonus Faber speakers.
Another amp I like is an Accuphase but they’re double the price of the Michi.

I do not understand the emphasis on streaming. I recorded all of my CDs, about .5 terabytes onto a hard drive, I subscribe to Medicitv and UA-cam premium, and that serves as my input source for three music systems in my apartment. I’ve tried Spotify twice and it is not for me. I have a listening room that cost me $50,000. and over three years building and tuning time. What could a streamer add? It seems to me that streaming just adds a continuous stream of music for those who do not want to bother to pick and choose their own music. What am I missing?
A streamer adds amazing discoverability. The ability to discover more music that reaches your soul is worth more than any piece of equipment. Having access to Roon and a qobuz sub has been the single greatest musical and hifi journey I have ever made in over 40 years as an 'audiophile adult'. Fantastic music is the only reason to do this at all, and nobody knows even a fraction of what the world has to give...
My guess, re what you may be missing, is that you are not representative of the typical purchaser of a DAC / digital front end in 2023. Streaming may not be for you and that’s cool, you’re the sole judge of that. But streaming is the way I would guess the majority of people consume the majority of their music in 2023. Many of us no longer have or never had extensive CD libraries. The cost to establish one would be significant. The discoverability of new music and ease of access, including across multiple devices and away from home, is the primary appeal of streaming. I stream Tidal via Roon with very satisfying sonic results. I understand the quality of streaming is not quite at local file playback level but it gets close for those of us with optimised network / server setups.

Thank you. A good preamp should improve soundstage, imagining, and dynamics significantly, but also the overall fidelity. I wouldn't rely on the Altair's internal volume attenuation in a system as resolving as yours. Check out the matching EVO preamp. I would be interested to see how you get on 🙂
@@abritishaudiophile7314 Hello Tarun, Quick update (as requested 🙂). Followed your "recommendation" and added a Primaluna EVO 400 Pre Amp to my system. After approx. 20 hours of "burn in time" I can report HUGE improvements. Sound stage grew wider, deeper and higher with instruments much better defined in space and tonality. Female voices give me goose bumps (eg Lori Lieberman's Killing me softly). Listening to Beethoven's 5th Piano concerto the Piano plays in front of the orchestra and the various sections of the orchestra are clearly defined in space. My dealer mentioned it might take 100+ hours for everything to be settled in - but I am impressed with the immediate results already and am looking forward to further improvements. And - of course - there is always "Tube Rolling". Thanks again, Wolfgang
I have an Auralic Aries G1 and it is a fabulous product, however, the level of support is pure rubbish. The USB DAC port just stopped working and the support team and Auralic came to the conclusion that my DAC (Mytek Brooklyn) was at fault. The Brooklyn plugged into the bluesound node and any other stream always worked perfectly. Also it is very well documented that the USB dac port is poorly implemented. Result: Auralic is asking me to pay 400 euros for repairs. Unfortunately, the support is worse than the one offered by Gustard.

Regarding your question concerning "digital journey ". I have an NAD M10 v1 which I bought during the first Covid lockdown after not buying any hifi for 15 years or so. I have to disclose that my decision was made to get the NAD not in small part because I know some of the main designers at Lenbrook. They've been customers of mine on and off over the years and as such they very kindly allowed me to purchase through their friends and family program. The amp is great but not without a few teething problems that seem to have been solved with firmware updates, which is something that you need to make allowances for on a digital journey. When you buy a product that is in effect an IOT device you have to expect updates for good or bad. I had no such issue with my old Rotel RA820 BX2 that I've owned since the 1980s (bought in the UK and was running it in Canada after I emigrated at 110V). For me, DIRAC made a huge difference, and I am now not sure I could put up with anything that doesn't have active equalization. However, there is one thing the all-in-one box does impose on me that I am not sure I am 100% happy about, and that's the ability to tinker and upgrade. I spent maybe three decades not paying attention to audio as a hobby, emigrating and raising a family, kind of put everything on the backburner. I'm now in the position financially where I can play, but although I could add external power amps to the NAD, I'm kind of stuck with the DAC if I want to stay with Dirac. To that end I may start looking at starting another system of separates in my office (less WAF issues), which will give me the chance to switch individual streamers, DACs, pre-amps and power amps around. Just to finish off, I was trying to sell FPGAs to Lenbrook years ago, primarily for OSD functionality, and the team had already started to talk about bringing in a line of "lifestyle" products This was the kernal of the idea for BluOS. Although the M10 is an NAD product, it's still really a child of this "lifestyle" product philosophy, which, if we are honest, is what most non-audiophiles are after. BluOS has been very successful for Lenbrook and has likely given them the sales needed to continue to succeed. I guess digital has effectively saved the audiophile industry by making good quality hifi more accessible to everyone and I don't think NAD/Lenbrook is any exception . Now I've a written a small novel on my phone, so please excuse grammar and typos. I love your channel as you're one of the few guys who likes to open the equipment and point out what the designers are up to and what components they're using. As an electronics manufacturer's rep I wish they'd use more of my parts, but hey, ho. Keep up the good work.
