I live in Austria, not even that far from Hallstatt and it's not easy to go and live there. It's a closed village where you are a always the stranger. But it's beautiful.
I was in Hallstatt for college back in 2009. I rode the car up and did take the tour of the salt mines. I think it may be the most beautiful place in the entire world.
The village is beautiful. I was often there as a child. But Austrians, like me, are not really welcome anymore because they "do not bring enough money" Today I don't really like to go there because there are also too many tourists.

Seems like the corridor for aesthetic and picturesque beauty was reserved for that Central Region with Austria, Switzerland, Bavaria, I'll definitely incorporate Austria the next time I visit Europe.
You can easily go from Vienna to Hallstatt by train, it is about 3.5 hours. The good thing is, that the train station is on the other side of the lake, so there is a ferry directly from the trainstation to the center of the village, which allows a really nice view on the boat. And you are lucky with the weather as Hallstatt is a very rainy and cloudy village. Anyway the biggest problem there is the overtourism, there are just too many tourists, and most of them don't spend money there or only very little of it, but bring a lot of noise and traffic. It's not that nice for the local people who live there.
Thank you for your comment giving information about how to get there. Lots of people will find it helpful. It’s a beautiful city and will a lot of tourists
