@@DIY_or_DIE No blame for trying, just time consuming and you will still lose! LOL You spoke of floor beams or something going up before the rafters, use your tractor, rather than your body. Women are always right! (Lowes). Don't mean this as a 'mean' comment but I live in Southern Oregon, the land of forest fires every summer and much discussion / education on fire defense. A couple of years ago we hundreds of homes lost in our area (Ashland, Talent, Phoenix). At ~7:00 in the vid you do a drone shot and I can't help but see all the trees right up to and around you're home - no defenses from fire risk. It's called your "second home"....not Lowes. Ha😂😂😂. Glad you got some good toys...I mean tools. Safety first. Looking forward to this phase. You will be taping in your nightmares. Ugh
Haha, isn't that the truth! And I acquired two more ladders this week so the collection is growing 😄 this taping wasn't too bad...it's drywall taping that I'm not looking forward to.
@DIY_or_DIE oh boy. You aren't a kidding. When we built, I chickened out and hired a guy to do it in the evenings and weekends. We still have him do odd jobs for us nearly 30 years later. He has said our new house job just about killed him.
Oh boy, sounds like he still has nightmares about the taping 😂 well we are planning to do it ourselves, so we will see how it goes. Fortunately we have a lot of other things to do first before we get to drywall 😄
Question: Why are you putting your rafters on 16 inch centers? They're typically on 24 inch centers down here since we don't have to worry about Snow Load.
@axelruntschke I get the no snow load, but what do you use for live and dead load when sizing the ceiling joist and rafters? I probably overdesigned it a bit 😄
@DIY_or_DIE Live and Dead Load is more for your subfloor. Dead load being the weight of your flooring, cabinets, interior walls, and furniture. Dead load rarely changes, unless you rearrange your furniture, but even that is pretty minor of a difference. Live load is the weight of you and your family and guests. Always moving around, causing minor movements in your subfloor, even smaller ones in your floor joists, and even down to your pillars (microscopic at that point), but Movement nonetheless. When it comes to your roof (down here in the south), your trusses or rafters only have to hold up the weight of your roof sheathing and shingles or metal. Also wind load. Trusses and rafters are more than capable of handling that load on a 24 inch center. Use 7/16 or 1/2 sheathing, and use plywood clips in the middle of each span. Add your underlayment (tar paper or Ice and Water Shield), and shingles or metal panels. Done deal. You'll save a bunch by going with 24 inch on center.
Also, your ceiling joists are fine at 24 inches on center. Just use 5/8 inch drywall for the ceiling, and 1/2 inch for the walls. Install ceiling drywall first, followed by walls. Use 1/2 inch spacers under the wall panels to keep them up off the ground a bit. Helps in case you ever have a flooding situation in your house (like a burst pipe of washing mashine issue) so the water won't soak up into your drywall.
Two more ladders & one more scaffold will make your job go a lot easier , and then they go up for resale .Also I need your P.O. Box to send you some help with full name.
Don't worry, we have plenty of projects planned for the future even after the house is finished 😄 also, we don't have a P.O. box yet...will work on that!
