The Island Soon To Be Underwater: Climate Change's Impact On Tangier Island
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- Tangier Island, located in the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia, is home to approximately 400 people, but will soon be underwater due to the rapid effects of erosion and rising sea levels caused by climate change.

Geology reveals many huge areas of land were once above water and are now far under the sea. Erosion is certainly a problem anywhere there is water, and sea levels rise and fall. The islanders make their livelihoods from tugboats, fishing boats, and other employment using gasoline too. Even trying our best, should the entire world cooperate, some areas were never going to be able last through time. It's very sad to see this lovely, unique island be faced with this situation, but nature wins when she wants to.

Currently sea levels are increasing at about 1.8 mm/yr and have been doing so for more than 150 years - as long as we have had tide gauge records. That is about 3/4" per decade. Chesapeake Bay is sinking at a faster rate because of land subsidence - the natural compression of sediments over time. The video says NOAA says sea level rise is accelerating. Really? How much? Tide gauges don't show acceleration and satellite altimetry doesn't show acceleration. About the only thing that claims acceleration is a paper by JR Houston (2021) that claims an acceleration of .0128 mm/yr squared. That number is so trivial that by the year 2100 it adds 3 inches of sea level rise to the expected 8 inches of sea level rise at current rates. The mayor is a lot more correct than the climate alarmists. The island is disappearing not so much because of climate change but because of erosion and land subsidence - and sea level rise that has been going on long before humans added any CO2 to the atmosphere.
Bunch of anti science lies.
Sea levels along United States coastlines will rise as much as one foot by 2050, according to a new report led by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Given how quickly the planet is warming due to human-caused climate change, scientists anticipate water will rise two feet by the end of the century. Sea level rise will also damage sensitive wetland ecosystems and increase erosion. But if emissions aren’t cut, coastal communities could see an extra foot and a half to five feet more to sea levels by the end of the century, for a total of up to seven feet, the analysis concluded. Don't look up boomer.
Kirt take a class in Physics. Gravitational constant is not the same all over earth. Sea level will rise where its hot "water expands" it will rise where the Gravitational Constant is more intense like NYC
@@LK-pc4sq The gravitational constant is the same all over the earth as well as the rest of the universe. That's why it is a "constant".
@@kazheadrest3626 You should be more skeptical about the claims you cite. Yes, it is possible that sea level rise will accelerate. However, they’ve been telling us that for that last 40 years and it still hasn’t happened. Google any tide gauge at tectonically stable locations and you will find a linear increase for as long as the tide gauge has been in place. For some that is more than 150 years. All the following, plus many more, are tectonically stable. They all show linear sea level rise: Den Helder, Netherlands; Van den Hoek, Netherlands; New York; Key West, Seattle, San Francisco, Honolulu, Tokyo (only 39 years), Sydney, AUS (two tide gauge records). Google NOAA’s satellite altimeter measurements of sea level rise. That is linear too.
So “settled” climate science has been telling us for 40 years that sea levels were going to accelerate and drown the coastlines of the world and low-lying islands. Those predictions have all failed. I recommend you don’t place much faith in their current predictions. Especially since NOAA’s climate gov website is using fraudulent information to try to persuade people that sea level rise has already accelerated. They are using a discredited “oranges to apples” comparison of tide gauge data up to 1993 then satellite data since 1993 to argue that sea level rise more doubled from 1992 to 1993. It didn’t - or tide gauges throughout the world would show that doubling. They don’t. The same website also fraudulently uses a research paper by Church and White (2006 and revised 2011) to claim acceleration of sea levels. But the Church and White paper is NOT tide gauge data. The paper is what Church and White believe the sea levels WOULD HAVE BEEN if you assume some adjustments to the data for water held by dams and sinking of the ocean bottom due to the weight of sea water and some other factors. Even if those assumptions are correct, the fact remains that tide gauges throughout the world (except for those in odd situations) show linear sea level rise of about ¾” per decade. (Satellite data suggests a linear rate of a little over one inch per decade) The only research paper that has found any acceleration is a paper by JR Houston (2021) which found an acceleration of 0.0128 mm/yr squared. That acceleration is so trivial (assuming that it isn’t cherry-picked data) that it would add less than three inches of rise to the roughly 8” of sea level that would be expected at the current linear rates.
I just watch another video about fresh water running out in Arizona and it's the same kind of citizens as that mayor that are being hit the hardest. The evidence is staring them right in the face and they just refuse to acknowledge it even though they are on the front lines of this disaster. What hope is there for the millions of fools that won't be directly affected for another 10 or 20 years?
I don't think the mayor is getting enough oxygen to his brain.
It turns out big population centers like Miami and NYC can deal with rising water levels. They will just have to be like New Orleans. But places with small populations, like Tangier Island, are gone.
