  • Recording the natural sounds around you is a great way to learn more about birds and help scientists study the natural world.
    Using a directional shotgun microphone will help minimize the impact of unwanted sounds in challenging sound environments and render a clearer recording of the animal's sound. Find out more about the advantages of using a shotgun microphone with your recording device in this video.

    What an excellent video!! Thanks for the clear information and superb production. You mentioned shotguns lose their directional ability with lower frequencies. When you say low frequency, what range do you mean? < 500Hz? < 5000Hz? Does this differ greatly between different shotgun mics? Thanks!

    Hi, I really liked your video, very didactic and captivating.
    I'm interested in capturing some sounds, like waterfalls, birds, wind..., to use in video editing on youtube (I think they call it FX sounds).
    Which equipment would be ideal for beginners, which is cost-effective and of satisfactory quality (the more compact the better, as I intend to use it on long walks where my house would be a backpack :) )?
    Thanks for the video and congratulations on your work!

      A very cheap option that is great for someone starting out (since it can be attached right to your smartphone) is the Rode VideoMic Me. Only around $60, very small, lightweight, and easy to use. Obviously not going to get the quality that something like the one in the video gets, but still a pretty good option

I want to record to my iPhone XR--I have lightning to mic and headphones splitter, and able to playback what I record to my headphones, but I do not know how to set up this system so I can monitor with corded headphones what the mic is recording real time. Any suggestions?

    I'm a beginner with shotgun mics and I use mine outdoor for recording birds. Using it for the very first time I was surprised about the good focus, but after a while (and after having analized the recordings) I found out, that the sound from the sides is recorded too, but 1) only the lower frequencies and 2) with a different phase. This makes the whole sound a bit like coming out of a toilet, and I have no solution for that problem.

    Does anyone know how to fix this: so
    Basically I have an
    Olympus WS- 853 digital voice recorder, which I use for meetings and regular stuff, (although it's not as good as I thought it was despite being £85), I once recorded rain sound with it while outside just by using the handheld recorder alone but the noise capture was not the best of quality and the wind seemed to really mess up with the sound too.
    Does anyone have any suggestions for external microphones or other cheap but really good bits of equipment I could buy to fix the wind and quality problem especially when recording outside noise. If so I would really appreciate it 💛 if you could give full names of recommended products or equipment, or full details in advice. Thank you!

    how do you record five people talikng? five shotguns?

    • @AlexIsSmalll
      @AlexIsSmalll 6 років тому

      If they are talking in turns, I'd imagine the best thing would be to have a person hold the shotgun mic with a boom pole and aim it at each person when they're talking.
      If they're all talking at the same time, like having an argument or something, it may be better to just have it aimed at the center of the group as a whole from above.
      Not my expertise but those are my thoughts.

    • @linasmak9199
      @linasmak9199 5 років тому +1

      you can use one omni directional microphone for that, if those five people are not far away from each other.

      theres no such thing as a «game sounds» microphone. It's the same concept as with everything else, it just depends on the source that you want to record and the evironnement that you're in.

    Low frequencies are relative, like speed, grandma verse an F1driver.
    *** So with respect to recording wildlife, and directional pickup/rejection,
    ******WHAT do YOU CONSIDER- LOW FREQUENCIES? Hippo grunts for sure, but what about animals? Cats, dogs, coyote howls maybe.
    In reading the comments, Does this dude EVER answer any questions? I wish he would.

    • @bobodeyuca

      Any of those sounds have low and high frequencies. If you really want to know what the gain is specific frequencies, just look up the frequency response.
