What a great video. As a retired truck driver and now spending time on the road towing an 2610ML Grand Design. This is some very valuable advise. Rule #1 is like you said. Limitations!! It’s not always about you, safety is also about knowing your surroundings around you. Here in Michigan I’ve found that there must be an unwritten rule that the first guy up north WINS the race. Regardless of the speed limit or condition or how big of a truck you have 65 mph should be the limit. Thanks for a great video. And great advise. If everybody towed like you wed all be safer.

65 mph would be Fine if the Diesel Trucks didn't fly by you doing 70 to 80 Mph and blow you off the Road!! Try that 65 MPH on I 40 from Ft Smith Ar to Bakersfield Ca and see how that works out for you!! with a side wind blowing on you>>Fun Fun Fun>>I'll just take a 3/4 or 1 Ton and run with the rest of them>>>That's a lot Safer.

@@rebeccashipley255 If the 3/4 or 1 ton is what you're comfortable with to stay safe then 100% have at it. As long as you're comfortable and can tow safely then it's all good. Safe travels and thanks for watching!

Great Video. I made a couple of major upgrades to my trailer, which made a significant improvement to my towing experience. I tow a 2019 Imagine 2500RL at 29' with confidence. In the last year, I have added 2 sets of Sumo Springs, which control the sway, upgraded my equalizers to LCI road warriors, which smooth out the ride and a E2 weight distribution hitch. Finally I did upgrade my WestLakes to Goodyear's and increased the load ratings from 205 to 225's again which helped with the ride. I drive a 2020 Silverado 1500 with the 6.2L and max towing package with a max weight of 11,900lbs. Overall I am VERY comfortable towing this rig and get 9.5mph at 68-70mph.

From a 30 plus year seasoned truck driver doing his homework on half to capability I have to hand it to you sir this video is incredibly well done and informative. I too prefer the half ton as a daily driver, as a trucker I don't want to feel like I'm at work on my off time, however my first concern is safety for the public so I am doing my do diligence and research. I am purchasing the same half ton setup for the camper I am purchasing as well. I hope as a professional driver more people find your video. Very well done thank you.

One of the best videos ever when it comes to towing a TT. We have a 2023 Grand Design Imagine 2800BH as well. I tow it with my 2022 Chevy 2500 gasser model. And even though my truck probably weighs 2k lbs. more then yours, I still feel the push from tractor trailers. My limit is 65mph on the highway and I always leave plenty of room between myself and the vehicle in front of me. But that push from tractor trailers is very much still there with a 3/4 ton truck. Even some steering wheel correction when the tractor trailer approaches and then finally goes by. It totally unnerved me in the beginning because I had never towed a TT before, but after several hours I got more comfortable reading what the truck was going to do and my slight steering wheel corrections became second nature. Those tractor trailers going by at 80mph can cause quite a bit of wind disturbance for sure. One thing I didn't do was pump my tires up to 80psi, of which I will do the next time we tow next month. That doesn't reduce trailer sway but it will reduce the amount of truck sway. Anyhow who doesn't love the 2800BH, we love ours for sure!! Enjoy all....

Thank you so much for this video!! I just bought a used Grand Design 19BWE because that was the best floor design for me that fits into my driveway and that model has been discontinued. I want to use my trailer for seeing some sights and for extra sleeping space when my family brings their friends to my beach house. I bought the Ram 1500 to tow it with. Thank you for helping me build my confidence!! I'm a 64 year old woman. I have always wanted a camper type thing so I bought one. It's a bit overwhelming but people like you are imensly helpful. Our truck does amazing towing our home. Does it struggle, up hill very little. On the flats not at all. It's like you said, it's all about payload and keeping it safe. My own rule, 10-15% below max payload is what we go by and it's worked. It's just my wife and I are our 2 lil fur babies. Safety and common sense are key.

Finally a realist when it comes to towing. I’ve had both and you feel the push from trucks no matter what you tow with. It’s science. I would say the biggest difference I noticed between the had truck is porpoising when hitting significant dips in the road. Would a HD truck be better? Sure but not necessary if you have everything set up right and within the weight limits. The dodge air suspension is a major plus. I’d go with LT tires if I had the opportunity

I tow with 2014 ford f150 SC 5.0 3.55 gears. 24 foot tt 4600lb dry, upgraded tires, reese steady flex WD and sway control, tows like a dream but wind is my enemy, mpg goes way down with a head wind so as being retired i try to travel with being wind aware. • @Don-ul6rx

Great video and very informative 👍 I will add the only safe way to stop sway dead in its tracks is to NOT let up on the gas pedal or give it more gas/fuel for us diesel trucks. Simply reach down to the trailer brake control and apply a little trailer braking. Do not slam it on just lightly apply the trailer brakes. This will stop the sway by bringing the trailer back on the hitch. Sway is caused by the trailer coming off or slightly moving forward on the hitch. That is why some people tell you to accelerate during a sway event. Will that work, sometimes but not always. Applying the trailers brakes immediately brings the trailer back against the hitch and stops the sway. Try it the next time you feel any sway and you will not be disappointed and please come back and report your findings.

    • @liveyourfree
      @liveyourfree  3 роки тому +1

I appreciate your added value. I agree with you. I probably should have elaborated on that more with the trailer brake. You are exactly right. I will often times let off the gas to prevent from getting to the point of needing to manually use the trailer brake. I briefly mentioned the trailer brake gain but didn't go into it further. I appreciate you adding this input. It definitely brings value. That's how we all get better. Thank you for watching and happy camping. I appreciate you my friend!

well said , well done! I tow a keystone cougar 28rbswe with a 2016 F150 ecoboost 3.5 with the max tow package and my WD hitch is the Equalizer hitch witch I recently upgraded to. My trailer came with the E2 WD and honestly I was super close to upgrading my truck to a 3/4 ton truck because of all the sway I used to get thinking my truck was too small for the size trailer I was pulling and finally I got rid of all the sway upgrading to the Equalizer hitch(I highly recommend it). I also added the Roadmaster Active Suspension kit to the rear end since my truck didn't come with airbags like yours. I have a more lower end package, 2019 Bighorn Crew Cab with 5.7 Hemi with option package 24Z, which leaves me with a 1788 LB payload (which at that time of buying, I had no idea that I was going to own a travel trailer). She has the 3:21 gears but can still tow up to 8500 lbs. Average about 9.5 mpg and mainly live in 6th gear (8 speed 8HP75) in tow mode. I have only done 1 modification and that was throwing on a mild Flowmaster Muffler because I enjoy the purr of a V8, but kept the stock dual exhaust tips. We have a 2021 Forest River Wildwood X-Lite 24RLXL couples trailer that we pull, around 5200 lbs. We were initially going to go with a 26BH but thought about it - our kids are older and were doing it to get away from them! LOL... Instead went with the 24FT for bigger bathroom and if they had to come with us - could always convert the rear to bed or dinette to bed.
I feel the same sensations as well with my set up, run a R3 Eazy Lift weight distro hitch that's easy to use. I was wondering if others felt the same sensations from big trucks passing and how they dealt with it and I have to tell ya, I do the same thing. I mainly cruise around 65mph (trailer tires are rated for 75) but will decrease speed just about 5mph or so to let them pass me quicker. Its not that bad pulling these trailers. I expect to fuel up every 200 miles or so this way to leave something in reserve should something out of the ordinary happen. This is a great discussion and I you couldn't have mentioned it any better. Looking forwards to future updates! Sorry about the ramble but a good note comparison.

I bet that V8 sounds great with the flow master on it too! Happy camping my friend and thanks for taking the time to comment!

Camping World installed a great weight distribution hitch with a Primus brake controller. We had no problems what so ever coming back from Chattanooga and going up and over Monteagle mountain. Average speed was around 65 mph with semis passing up and passing other vehicles up hill was no problem. The right set up makes a heck of a difference. Very little sway and felt completely in control. This is the first time I've ever pulled anything that long and that heavy. Dry weight of camper is 6400 pounds and the 1500 did perfect.

Terrific video and spot on. I started the other way. I pulled a 27ft Nash (GVWR of 7000 lbs.) with a GMC 3500 Duramax. Yes, it pulled like a freight train and stopped on a dime. The engine braking on steep grades in the Rockies was truly outstanding. That said, I’m retired, so we decided to go as a “one vehicle” family. In that regard the 3500 had to go. It took an airport parking lot to turn it around in
, and its “bigness” became a bother after a short while. City driving a one ton truck is a pain. So now we pull our rig with a F150. Sure it’s less, and from a towing perspective, a lot less. But as long as I stay within our tow and payload limits, We’re safe. When we travel, very little goes in the truck bed-as we have little to spare in payload capacity. But that’s okay, as a daily driver a 1/2 ton truck beats a 1 ton vehicle in every way. I had a Chevy 2007 2500 Duramax also. I saw one the other day and was astonished at how small it was compared to the 2500’s today. What a difference!

Great video! Just finished a 3,600 mile travel trailer trip down I-65 from Michigan to Florida. A good hitch is the most important consideration, but good tires are a close 2nd. My 2020 Ram 1500 handled the trip well, but our trailer is just 24 feet long. Truck Suck is just the reality of the situation, but you described it well, just relax and understand what's happening and slow down a little if things feel sketchy.

I never had problems towing my 6200 pounds trailer 28 ft with my 2018 ram 1500 crew bighorn. I've taken 10 hrs drive from high elevation Colorado to windy Kansas. Yes I deal with sways but it's not that bad. I've driven on colorado route 70 with 6-7% road grade, up and down with snow on the road. I'm a little slow on the hills. I drive by RPM and not MPG, pride set aside. All this with 3 kids and wifey. Never over max payload, a good sway bar (air rides), and towing tires (tow air pressure).

I believe everything your saying and think I would consider you what I would call a professional driver. In saying all that I don't think its a good idea to take that setup into the mountains on a rainy day or any kind of bad weather but I think you already know that. Another thing I would do is keep a close I on weather for wind gusts which again I am sure you do . I am a professional driver have been for 40 years its all about preparation, attention, and maintenance. Keep all those things always in mind and you should be okay. Also for your viewers it wouldn't hurt to mention if you do get into a sway condition to manually activate those trailer brakes immediately. Happy travels.

Thank you for the video and the discussion. I also have a new RAM 1500 and pulled a Grey Wolf 26DBH from Kansas up through South Dakota and over to Mt. Rushmore and back. Easily capable of pulling it. The specs on my truck are basically identical to yours with the options. In retrospect I would have liked to have gotten the 33 gallon fuel tank because getting 7-8 mpg the 23 gallon tank doesn't really get you very far. One thing to remember however with the payload is that anything you put in the truck is that much less payload. Car seats, people, etc. That's a given, but what people don't think about are things like tonneau covers and anything you put in the bed. All those things add up. Drive safe everyone!!

Good video and good presentation. All of your info seems solid and you seem like you have “eyes wide open” as far as your capabilities. However, there is no way you are under your payload number when towing. Your payload is 1400 pounds and that trailer’s tongue weight is at least 1000 pounds. That only leaves 400 pounds for all of the passengers and gear in the truck. You need a truck with at least 2000 pounds payload . I started towing with a half ton and realized I was over on payload also. I sucked it up and got the 3/4 ton. That was the best towing decision I ever made. Thanks for the video.

Nice job. I like your common sense approach and not getting into debates about 1/2 ton vs. 3/4 ton. I had Silverado 1500 crew cab 4x 4 w/5.3 V8. I towed a 30ft. Premier travel trailer with weight distribution hitch. Proper set up of ball height & D bars is a must so truck &!trailer are leveled out. I could see you had yours set up and dialed in nice. You are right on to point up the effect from tractor trailers. The suction and push from them are the biggest things to deal with on the highway. Getting ready to get a new couples trailer. Looking at Imagine 2670MK or 2500RL. Thanks again for excellent video.

Id love a 3/4 truck. But they are expensive. I drive a ton for work and I get huge discounts on Nissan. So I have a 2018 Titan non XD. Truck does great towing our 34' trailer. We are probably a little over payload but still well within GCVWR. Our hitch is dialed in perfectly now and I understand how different things make my truck handle. I can now cruise the interstate around 70-75 with no push/pull from other traffic. We usually cruise around 65 though. I get between 9-11 pending where I'm towing and how far. Pocono mountains usually gets me 9mpg. Truck has a 2.93 rear gear. This was a great video for us half ton guys who may want a 3/4 but just aren't in the cards right now.

I too tow with a half ton, I tow at my max limit every time I camp. The only time I go over is when I need to haul water to a campground where it’s not feasible to fill when I arrive! I have a Center Line TS equalizer set up and I love it. What you are doing in this video while taking us on a ride, I do with my wife and talk about what I’m doing while driving to our campsites. Although she has never towed, I think she would do just fine after listening to me for years giving towing points while towing. On my 3rd camper in 20 years and the only mistake I’ve made was 2 years ago when I pulled my full black tank cap off with the valve still open.🤮 what a newbie mistake, but it happened. Thanks for the vid, and happy and safe camping to all!

Thank you for watching! I am like you and don't drive with water in the tanks. When I do it puts us right at the max limit so I only carry water in the same situation you described. Thats awesome you provide a play by play while diving. I 100% agree with you that it helps prepare new towers for what they will experience. It only takes one time to experience that black tank experience doesn't it 😆? I don't have your 20 years of towing experience but I can definitely share the black tank experience. I appreciate your time to comment and happy camping!

    A few observations...
    1. The Blue Ox has no sway “control”. They certainly market as though it does but spring bars are not a means of controlling sway. Their purpose is WD period. The forces applied to the hitch as the pivot point WILL overcome whatever BlueOx has in their design to attempt to control sway.
    2. Air suspension will affect proper WD. Check your numbers at a scale to confirm what Im saying.
Overall great video to plant the seed of safety and lay out expectations in the minds of your viewers!
Ive been there and done that. Pulled a 37’ 11k lbs OR 310BHS with a halfton. Found I was always 3-500 lbs over the rear axle rating.
My safety plug... reach out to ProPride and speak with Sean Woodruff about doing another video of this nature with their product. I and many others can attest its night and day different than any other towing experience.
Safe Travels & enjoy that family time!!!

Thanks for watching. I hear where you are coming from and have had the propride conversations. Have heard great things about it. Propride has a great marketing scheme as well as supporters who have a great presence across the social media space. Thats also a testament to having a solid product to back up the claims. My point is, I'm not anit-propride.The blue ox has worked great for me in all terrains and in multiple weather conditions. It's a tested hitch that works well for my setup and is significantly less expensive and is effective. I am familiar with the scales. Use them all the time. There is a process of properly hooking up your hitch with the auto air suspension system specific to Ram. I hear what you're saying and it is valuable especially for folks much much newer to towing. With humility, in my case, I have extensive research and time into this to know what I am talking about. I do sincerely appreciate and respect your comment and thank you for watching.

I keep trying to get content creators to do real world comparisons because its much needed information to the community. No different than you probably struggled finding good resources.
The thing about the 3P hitch everyone glosses over is its value. People are willing to pay $300-$1k for the single most important piece of safety gear that links two of their most expensive purchases in life. Yet that piece of gear is usually the cause of most RV wrecks.
The 3P even if its 5 yrs old with 30-40k miles of use will still fetch $2k or more in the secondary market. Thats its true value in addition to its safety record.

I really enjoy your videos. You really emphasize many points around safety. Especially your points about mandatory load limits well done. My setup includes a Dodge Ram 1500 Classic with a 5.7 V8 Hemi engine and 392 gears. I exchanged the stock tires for Toyo AT III LT 10 ply tires. I also added Tuf Truck springs to the rear. I felt comfortable making these changes rather than buying a way more expensive 3/4 or 1 ton truck for occasional use. The price difference gave me plenty of room for beefing up my 1500 which I prefer as a daily driver over the heavier trucks.
I also chose the Blue OX Sway Pro trailer hitch and after some careful adjustments to the hitch and trailer brakes(gain) the truck and trailer runs very steady on the road.
One observation: your bars appear somewhat flat and under loaded. I suggest you review your setup. You should have more of a bow to those Blue OX bars for them to be effective. I made some initial changes accordingly and my tow improved greatly.
All new RV’rs should check in on your videos. You present some great instructive points in a clear understandable fashion, all while driving no less.
Damn the Ram trucks featured in your videos sound good.

Great video. I have similar situation for my setup. I have a 2020 Grand Design Imagine XLS 23BHS pulling it with a 2020 Chevy Tahoe RST. It's fairly light but the length is 27" ft from the receiver to the rear bumper. Being the Tahoe is a shorter wheelbase, the sway is noticed on windy days on highway speeds but with the weight distribution set up it improves the driving dynamics and almost eliminates it completely. Like you said keeping the payload within specs and distributing the weight in the trailer will keep it steady. I would love to have a 1/2 ton pickup truck but my wife uses this as a daily drive to work. For now, the Tahoe will do and I'm happy how it pulls our trailer. We are only weekend warriors anyway so we don't travel far.

    • @liveyourfree
      @liveyourfree  3 роки тому

Yea the length and speed traveled definitely has its say in how much it will sway and how comfortable it will be. Once you find the sweet spots that work well in different situations, it becomes more enjoyable. It does take some getting used to in order to learn it though. Plus the extra incentive is that your current tow vehicle fits your family's current life style so it's bringing you value beyond just towing. Stay safe and happy camping. Thank you for watching!

1/2 ton trucks are all around trucks. I tow a 3200 lbs 17ft camper with an F250 with 7.3L Godzilla. Let me tell you, even my truck weigh more than twice the trailer, I still feel the suction when semi passes me. I drive a little civic everyday and my truck only tow my camper. Driving a 3/4 ton unladen sucks as hell. If I’m only gonna have one vehicle, I’ll definitely get a 1/2 ton. Likely an F150 with HDPP option.

Those side winds can make a truck work. And of course turning around corners on streets or campsites can be a challenge. I've had all three. Half, 3/4, 1-ton.
Hands down. One ton diesel, best truck in the world. You won't believe until you do it. Now I regret all my life without one ton capacity and diesel torque. Looking back, smaller gas trucks are a monumental burden, and obsolete. Diesel is the only way to do work. Period. The diesel does all the work, not your foot!! It drives me crazy driving gas trucks, having to dip deeper deeper and deeper into the throttle to climb mountain passes heavy. Irks me to no end! While my 6.0 one ton powerstroke diesel lumbers up steep winding mountain grades while heavy at part EVEN throttle, like a locomotive. At 17 mpgs!!! +.
And still drive downtown New York City through Queens tunnel, Brooklyn, Maspeth just like a car, only with good visibility. Drive up to the hotel and crash. My choice will ALWAYS be a one ton diesel. My 1/2 ton looked like a clown show leaving the aggregate yard. My one-ton squats about 2 inches with about 2000 lbs of aggregate. Rides smoother, accelerates as if empty, and brakes almost magically self energizes impeccably upon load increases. One ton...fascinating machines. Don't just barely "get er done!". Enjoy it/work/pleasure effortlessly, with room, capacity and safety to spare. Enjoying H.D./S.D. engineering and technology every step of the way. You'll never go back!
