Every time I watch your videos, you inspire me to get busy and stay busy. I just recently received my shipments of heirloom garden seeds. Here we didn’t have a food shortage, but everyone thought we were going to have one, the shelves were never empty. People still panicked. While they were acting crazy panicking about a food shortage that never happened, I took advantage of that situation and stockpiled Mason Jars and lids. I got so many that when I was paying for them the cashiers were saying “you are a prepper” and I told them “Preppers are smart and will survive”. They agreed. Here it’s still very cold, I have the greenhouse delivered when it warms up, I will get busy on it. The Water Catchment System is the next project. You are an absolute inspiration, that’s for sure !

Bird droppings are on the roof. Rainwater should be collected for about half an hour to water the flowers. After half an hour, the rainwater should be boiled for drinking.
We live on 30 acres south of Tyler, Texas so your videos are very helpful. Last Spring's week after week of rain and cloudy weather decimated our early garden. Your series on the high tunnel greenhouse have been very useful and we will be copying your setup when the kit arrives. You've mentioned how hot the greenhouse gets in the summer, even with the rollup sides and shade cloth. Is it practical to remove the plastic and just have shade cloth through the hotter months? Or would the plastic likely be damaged and, being trimmed, almost impossible to reinstall the following Fall?
It would not be practical to remove the plastic. I think a 40% shade cloth put on the outside of the greenhouse would be fine for the summer months. We had to put the shade cloth on the inside of the greenhouse because of the pine nettles and I believe it created more heat because the sun would shine through the plastic and hit the shade cloth causing a greenhouse effect in between that space. Our sweet potatoes did well in the greenhouse last summer and I think tomatoes, peppers and eggplants would do well. You just have to plant varieties that love the heat. But in general, if you get a 40% shade cloth and keep the greenhouse open in the summer, sides and doors, you'll be fine. The only time we close our greenhouse is at night if it falls below freezing 32 degrees.

While mulching blueberry bushes today, I noticed tender little buds starting to swell on the branches. I'm not too upset about the unseasonably warm Fall making my lettuce bolt. But messing with the blueberries is another matter. Thanks for putting so much effort into producing quality and informative videos. Really inspiring work you are doing.
Can not tell from video but it looks like raised beds are made from galvanized metal. I would be worried about zinc leeching. Ever tried Jericho lettuce? Does well for me
We pick the lower leaves of the lettuce and let the younger leaves grow or cut the whole top off and it will regrow. The broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower don't all mature at the same time and all the scraps and bad leaves go to our chickens. But yes we are busy eating. 🙂
Probably not a good idea because asphalt shingles have petroleum hydrocarbons that will be released into the water and not to mention other chemicals like anti fungal treatments it might have to stop mold and moss growing on the shingles.
Great job Pete on both the water system and your greenhouse. Are you planning on keeping the shade cloth on all winter? I live up here in Central Oregon where it is considered to be the "high desert" area on 5.5 acres. Little colder up here as this week it will be getting down to 9 degrees. I have my own well that is attached to a 1200 gallon cistern. I have a filtration system on it too as we have arsenic in the water. Unfortunately, we do not get enough water (11 inches per year) that would make a water catch system really reasonable. The greenhouse I built is 10' X24.' It has all Cedar framing and pressured treated lumber where it touches the ground. Connected to the framing all around the base is 3' high metal ribbed sheeting and then the rest consists of polycarbonate sheeting. I also installed a water system along with electricity in the greenhouse. I have two large electric fans in the front and one large vent in back for air flow. Both vent fans are on temperature control settings and the back vent opens and closes by a solar piston. The raised cedar beds are also on an automatic water timer drip hose system as well. Yes, I do have a heat system for the greenhouse too. I built a chicken coop that is pretty much all automated as well, but I don't have nearly as many chickens as you. No. The water will not go bad unless there is some contamination introduced. Pete B information here is all top notch and good information. Rainwater collected and stored will be suitable for washing clothes, watering gardens, and other uses. If you want to be especially certain of drinking quality water (i.e. potable water), filter drinking water through a Berkey filter. The rainwater is perfectly suitable for most other uses. If you are collecting rainwater off surfaces such as a rooftop, you may be bringing in water that has passed through bird manure, insect bodies, dirt and dust. That’s fine for gardens, but personally I’d use filter it with a Berkey filter for that water I wanted for drinking. There are licensed plumbers and others that specialize in rainwater catchment systems. You can consult with licensed professionals check for yourself. I know, because my younger brother is just such a Texas State licensed individual. Don’t trust my word here just because “I, unknown person Lance B” claim this is so. Check for yourself if you need more education. There is a lot of information on the internet on rainwater catchment. I know I have viewed at least 6 videos published by different people who have installed their own systems. You can build your own less expensive “Berkey” filter with two 5 gallon buckets and Berkey ceramic filters. The ceramic filter is what does all the work. There are UA-cam instruction videos on exactly how to build your own “Rain Barn”, as well as your drinking water “Berkey style” filter. Or, buy the complete Berkey water filter from the many sources.

It's not actually galvanized it's more like some type of a powder coating. But zinc is an essential mineral.

We catch the rain off the greenhouse and use it to water the greenhouse too.
