- In this video I'm going to explain what haircuts are allowed and how to ask for the right haircut in the Air Force, the military or just in general. I'll go in to depth about the different types of fades, and also cover different styles like the quiff, pompadour, comb over and more so that you don't get in trouble in accordance with AFI 36-2903.
I use a bunch of different clippers to cut my own hair at home, but here's my go to set up

If I don't know what I want, but I know what it looks like, I just google it and show a pic and say "Hey! This is the style I want!" They will know exactly what it is from the pic. So they'll just go "Oh you want the (Haircut Name)?" and I just say yeah, hook me up. Thank god for the internet!

I hate to admit it, but it always better when a black man gives advice on hair. Why? Because our hair is always seen as unprofessional unless it involves waves and we tend to understand all hairstyles instead of only straight hair like majority of barbers who only cut straight hair.
Going to AFROTC this fall, so I gotta know these terms. I've had long hair since middle school, so I know none of these terms.

You should see these haircut and style i see at Langley the bulk is within regs but i seen twist and starter dreds matted down with all types of fades and tapers looks super tacky

They do have religious accommodations. You’d have to coordinate this with your recruiter prior to joining. It’s a pretty easy and simple process.

My petpeeve back then. I give my Airmen a choice, LOC are a haircut in the locker room done by me.

At basic you will. Then afterwards you can grow the waves back.

what about guys with full beards ? I’ve had a full beard since i was 12 . of course I know it can’t be thick at all .but is like the army , where I can keep it on my face but not have it as thick ? Or Air Force still wants it completely shaved off ?
Don’t know if you’re in yet but no branch allows facial hair unless you get a waiver.

Are these rules applicable to members of the Reserves? I can't have a beard while in Reserves??
You’d have to get a shaving waiver. These are obtained for people who gets shaving irritation. If you got a shaving waiver, you’d be able to grow a beard (no longer than a 1/4 inch mostly). If you’re in the reserve, you can grow one when you’re not working your one weekend a month, but you’d have to shave when at drill. Unless of course you have the shaving waiver.

Lol. My bad. I knew this would be a problem. I had a bunch of takes for black haircuts, but then I realized, a lot of the names don’t mean the same from shop to shop. So I didn’t wanna create any confusion.
@@Jodywithawhy yeah I'm struggling with understanding the AFI and what we can do with curls. It says no twists. But just curls with a sponge brush should be fine right? Was looking for a video with authorized styles

Sounds like it, I have a full head of hair but I used to rock a high top fade so that’s what I’m gonna with in the service
What about a skin fade vs a shadow fade?
A shadow fade is any fade that actually starts with hair on the sides. A skin fade (bald fade) starts with skin.
i can’t pass 2 inch in bulk but can my hair go down and cover my forehead ??
So you can get 2.5 inches of bulk, and the reg says “Hair will not protrude under the front band of headgear”. So you have keep that in mind if you decide to have fringe.

Yes, as long as you’re within 2.5 inches of bulk.

Oh yea. Most definitely. No regrets at all. I honestly wish I would’ve joined right after high school instead of waiting 3 years. I’d be retirement eligible next year if I did that.

Lol. Once you’re in, you’d have to go to the clinic and request one. It’s actually pretty easy.
What can us black men do ?
The fades are the same across the board. The styles on top are different. I didn’t go into black haircut styles because we have so many different names for the same haircut. So as long as you stay within 2.5 inches of bulk on top, you’re good. I gave a lot of examples at the end of this video with black men haircuts. All of those are within regs.
