In the extended version of the movie you learn Ripley had a daughter that died of old age while she was in cryosleep . It makes Newt more important to Ripley because Newt represents the daughter she left behind and another chance for her to be a Mom.
Right. Theatrical release is about 2h 24m. Extended cut is about 2h 41m. The extended release includes the sequence (in Earth orbit) where Burke shows Ripley a photo of her daughter who has already died of old age / cancer (the picture is actually Sig Weaver's mom). Ripley laments that she intended to be home for her daughter's 12th birthday. It also includes Newt's family being the first ones to discover the alien ship, and Newt's dad being the first one infected with a facehugger. (So that's a much earlier first reveal of the aliens than in the theatrical version.) And it includes the four automated Sentry Guns, which adds a few minutes to the battle sequence of the aliens closing in on the remaining Marines.

Newt calling Ripley mommy at the end is such a perfect moment. I also love how Hicks is just kinda running game on Ripley the entire movie but they never actually kiss, you just wouldn’t have any time or privacy in that situation, a lesser movie would have been way more obvious and dumb about it. So awesome. And Bishop turns out to be the best dude ever even though you are waiting for him to turn evil at some point. Awesome movie.
There's a great continuing joke in the novelization, where one of the marines is like, "so, do we use judo on them or something? Do they have arms?" And Ripley says in a very tight voice, "they have arms".
Seeing as you are so extremely fond of Hicks, Bishop and Newt, do yourself a favour and NEVER watch Alien 3. They all survived and lived happily ever after, the end.

Alita says it perfectly. Also if you guys want to watch how the comics continue from Aliens(infinitely better than Alien 3) it's called "Accounts of the Earth War" on youtube. Somebody made a good audio version.
Alien: Resurrection never happened. That was a live action fan fiction I refuse to accept. For that matter the alleged Alien3 is in the same category. After Aliens some decent comics continued the story for awhile and then Ridley Scott decided to listen to the producer of a garbage tv show and then buried the whole thing in an alternate reality cliche.
And the Rival company is the Tyrel Corporation, from Blade Runner. Its pretty much established now they happen in the same universe. Weyland produces androids. Tyrel produces Replicants.

The director's cut of this movie is WAY better, learning about Ripley's daughter really adds to the character development and her relationship with Newt, also the gun torret scene is awesome.
Oh yeah, that sentry gun scene was terrifying, just watching those ammo counters dropping and dropping, and those damn things STILL coming on. Wish that they had not had to cut that one for the theatrical release. I remember when my mom saw this movie. She told me something that was actually pretty spot on. She liked the movie because she felt it was about a battle between two mothers, defending each other's species.
I saw this movie when I was 7. The top three things I remember from that viewing are : 1. The alien queen 2. The sound of the pulse rifles 3. That half eaten donut
The pulse rifle thing is sooo much mistaken. There are actually VERY FEW times the pulse rifles are fired: Hudson shoots out the window to the med lab, Hudson shoots the facehugger attacking Newt, Vasquez shoots the facehugger attacking Ripley. The short command room scene, Hicks, Vasquez, Hudson, and Ripley all fire multiple bursts. Hicks shooting the alien coming through the door into the elevator, that acids him. Ripley shoots 4 aliens and the queen in the penultimate fight. The first of these, the med-lab scene, does not take place until 1 hour 51 minutes into the film. The so called iconic pulse rifles are not fired a single time until 111 minutes into the film! What you are probably on about is Vasquez and Drake's smartguns. These ARE fired earlier, and give off a VERY iconic sound.........
Natalie, you have the rare ability to talk and narrate your feelings through the movie, but remain invested in the story and the tension. Great reaction!
"I didn't think I'd love Sigourney Weaver more." - Really, one day, watch Galaxy Quest - where SW is still playing a bad-ass in space who is absolutely a not-Ripley.
I think weaver does some of her best acting in Galaxy quest... in the key scene where Nesmith has to admit the truth... the look on her face... you can see the pain he feels... in her face.

Weyland-Yutani has genetically, cyberniticlly and, psychinetcally experimented on Xenomorphs. To domesticate and militarize them. Then sell them to the highest bidders. They expose colonies and civilian installations to these experiments. Then when they back fire or something else happens they send in either elite mercenary units or, the Colonial marines. Interesting tidbit, there is not a single female character in the entire The Thing movie from 1982. There is in the original, and there is in the most recent remake. But not in the 1982 film.
@@matthewkirkhart2401 There is a chess computer with a female voice ... But seriously, since this is set on an Antarctic research base in 1982, it is probably simply realistic that the whole crew would be men.

I always thought of them choosing a female voice for the chess game exactly because there are no women with them in the station. What surprised me about the movie is not a single phone conversation with one of the men’s mother, wife, girlfriend, sister. Nothing? Not a single conversation? I am not surprised that there are no women physically in that station given when the movie is made, but interestingly the 50’s original is the same basic set up, and there is a woman in that cast, so maybe I should be. But I am very surprised that there are no female actors who had at least a telephone conversation or a flashback scene with one of the men at some point in the movie.
I second the vote for John Carpenter’s The Thing. Additionally, I recommend the movie Frequency (not to be confused with the cancelled tv series with a similar story that wasn’t done as well as the movie). There's a fairly recent video game (Alien : Isolation), which covers a grown up Amanda (Ripleys daughter) taking a dead end job in the ass end of space to get access to the space station where the Nostromo was recovered to, hoping to get the black box data and find out what happened to her mother. With hilarious consequences

The game they made out of her makes it seem like she died possibly during the game's events and the company lied to her mum, or that they smoothed out parts of her life to keep Ellen from flipping shit.
They actually made a total reality set called "Alien War" back in the early 90s in Glasgow. A Colonial Marine would take a group of people through an Alien infested complex where the lights would go out and stuff like Alien hands would come out of the wall. Guys in Alien suits would break through doors, and there would be one plant in the group who would get dragged away, but the others would be unaware of who they were. It was absolutely amazing, and utterly terrifying!

I think they had one of those in London too (a friend of mine did it while visiting the city). Went to a similar show in Auckland a few years back with zombies - they set up a small compound with actors in army uniforms, and the audience were "survivors" being brought in for protection. Part of the show was live action and part of it was pre-recorded footage (crowds of zombies breaking down the fences outside, etc). In the end the compound was overrun and we had to run to the exit past zombie actors who were chained to a wall and trying to grab us. It was kind of silly, but a fun night out.

I loved your reaction to Ripley’s line to the Alien Queen: “Get away from her, you *bitch!”* It actually reportedly fit in with at least some genuine cinema audience reactions back when the film first came out. Sigourney Weaver is a superb, talented actress. She has even appeared in comedies and held her own, such as the comedy horror films in the _Ghostbusters_ franchise. Whenever I recommend _Aliens_ I always recommend the Director’s Cut, as it is more suspenseful and also sets up a backstory with Ripley that explains the way she is with Newt later (in this case, Ripley was trying to get back to her daughter’s birthday party but unfortunately was in stasis for so long that the daughter died before she could ever get the chance to reach her. The photo of the daughter as a grown woman that she holds in the scene is that of Elizabeth Inglis (1913-2007), who was a British actress who was Sigourney Weaver’s real-life mother). In the Director’s cut you also get to see Newt and her family and the colony being operational and running normally before it all went pear-shaped.
"Weyland-Yutani: Building Better Worlds!" I almost got that logo & maxim tattooed on my bicep...in the end, I just stuck with the Blue Sun corporate logo.

Raul Rodriguez : and I bet those first ten minutes ruined the whole film for you, as it did for me‼️ Many years later, I watched that 3rd movie again. If not for the horrible deaths of Newt and Hicks, it wasn’t as awful as I remembered. Surely the screenwriters could have come up with a better way to continue this franchise without killing Newt and Hicks. I know the actress playing Newt had outgrown her character’s age but come on, find a way to not kill her and then cut her up!!
@@slcRN1971yah, as a stand-alone movie, it’s not that bad. It’s pretty boring overall and the aesthetic wears thin super quickly, but it has some memorable moments here and there. But yah, that beginning just ruins it. I actually saw 3 long before seeing Aliens, and didn’t mind it. Didn’t think that highly of it, but thought it was decent. Then I eventually saw Aliens and that killed any interest in ever watching through 3 again. I know it’s production was a mess and even David Fincher doesn’t like having his name attached to it, but still, how did anyone think that was a good idea??? Also, compared to the Aliens in this, the one in 3 looks godawful.
You can think of "The Company', Wayland-Yutani, as The East India Trading Company back in the sailing ship days. Really just a corporate conglomerate but practically a nation onto itself.
I read the novelisation of Aliens back in the day. I don't know if it's canon, but from what I remember, it's a huge monopoly with some illusion of competition because other - much smaller - companies exist. Weyland-Yutani allows then to exist to do business that's too specialised for them to bother with themselves. If they get too big, or try to really compete with W-Y, or W-Y just decides it wants them, W-Y takes them over one way or another.
Same here. Seen the movie a billion times, and, at most, I thought it was a hokey, throwaway line. But seeing it hit Nat so hard had a literal mirror effect on me.
What makes that moment all the more poignant, and something which, I think, is missed in the theatrical release, but inclunded in the extended edition, is that Ripley actually had a daughter. She grew up, grew old and died, all while Ripley was drifting in the Nostromo's escape pod. So it's not just that Newt has found a mother, but Ripley has also found a daughter.
I though Newt was just saying it as a rhetorical exclamation (like "oh boy!" not requiring there be a boy). But I guess this gives it more thematic weight or whatever.
One of the most heartbreaking things about this movie was cut. In a deleted scene in the beginning of the movie, after Ripley wakes up, one of the things they tell her is that her only daughter has died of old age already. It's an emotional scene and really adds to the the weight and meaning of the whole mother/daughter theme the movie has.
It was re-introduced in the director's cut, with a few other scenes as well. Amanda Ripley is also the 'star' of one of the greatest computer games of all time "Alien: Isolation". I was a kinda sorry that Natalie didn't watch the extended cut of the movie. Sigourney's Mum is the photo shown by Burke to Ripley in that cut scene.
@Boop Yeah the original 'John Carpenters' version is the best. I think the reboot/remake would have been better if they had used practical effects. like the original. I mean, the CGI wasn't bad but it just didn't FEEL right somehow.
Imagine if they actually made an alien movie and no one died. That would be suprising. Especially with a lot of mutilation, gore, scare etc - it could still be satisfying. I mean the half of robot was a good way to incorporating storyline like that.

Newt calling Ripley mommy at the end is such a perfect moment. I saw this movie when I was 7. The top three things I remember from that viewing are :
1. The alien queen
2. The sound of the pulse rifles
3. That half eaten donut
The pulse rifle thing is sooo much mistaken.
There are actually VERY FEW times the pulse rifles are fired:
Hudson shoots out the window to the med lab, Hudson shoots the facehugger attacking Newt, Vasquez shoots the facehugger attacking Ripley.

They actually made a total reality set called "Alien War" back in the early 90s in Glasgow. Guys in Alien suits would break through doors, and there would be one plant in the group who would get dragged away, but the others would be unaware of who they were. Went to a similar show in Auckland a few years back with zombies - they set up a small compound with actors in army uniforms, and the audience were "survivors" being brought in for protection. Part of the show was live action and part of it was pre-recorded footage (crowds of zombies breaking down the fences outside, etc).

Alien 3 completely ruined Aliens in every way. I remember watching it and just wanting to walk out of the theater after the first 10 minutes.
@Roy Scheider in a hamster suit I think of them more as a Monsanto.
You either work for 'the company', or starve. Supposedly this is what working in Hollywood was like 50+ years ago. Once they own you; they own you.
W-Y probably isn't the only company in the Alien 'verse but likely one of the, if not the, biggest.
@@Dasharr "other companies" like Planet Express, no doubt.
when Newt called her "mommy" n you started crying, that made me cry a little. Ive watched this movie since I was a baby but oh my god😭😭
I would love to see you react to John Carpenters: The Thing. The tension in that movie is off the charts.
Dude, I don't want to see Natalie have a heart attack on-screen....
@Boop Yeah the original 'John Carpenters' version is the best. I think the reboot/remake would have been better if they had used practical effects. like the original. I mean, the CGI wasn't bad but it just didn't FEEL right somehow.
@@mikkdc Wait, the CGI movie was a prequel, not a reboot. Right? But I agree. The Carpenter's version was soooooo much better.
@@VBSuper Yeh you're right. The 2011 movie was about the Norwegians. I suppose it could be coined a 'premake' in that regard :D
@@mikkdc Premake? Kkkkk I don't think I ever heard that. Nice.
"Aaahhh, look at all these people who are gonna die..."
Say, you're gettin' pretty good at this movie-watchin' thing, there, kid. :D
Imagine if they actually made an alien movie and no one died. That would be suprising. Especially with a lot of mutilation, gore, scare etc - it could still be satisfying. I mean the half of robot was a good way to incorporating storyline like that.
Being a strong empath myself, I really enjoy seeing and sometimes even feeling your reactions to some of my favorite movies. Especially during this crazy quarantine life, you have made my day multiple times these past few months. It's a total blast, keep up the amazing work!
Long ago having been a teenage usher in a 70mm theatre with Aliens playing one summer, your reactions bring smiles! Watching 900 people react like you was a real treat and great film education.
"That is a violation of HIPAA, dude."
In space, no one at the HHS Office for Civil Rights can hear you scream...
Heh. Most Every law has the opposite content as to what the name implies. Like hipaa? The thing you sign? You sign that you've been informed that your information is gathered and sold to the insurance companies. Best part? They don't care if you sign that you were informed or not. Doesn't effect one thing. Also, they don't explain what the thing you sign actually means. It's just nurses after getting it to you, they don't even understand the legal text implications themselfs. It.Is.Wild.
I think HIPAA wasn't introduced until like 10 years after the movie came out?

Alien 3
@@dethhead22 We dont talk about that...
@@dethhead22 yeah she should have watched to beginning of alien 3 right after this, just to see her reaction.
Phyrexiandude as : I so agree with you!!! I like to pretend that the 3rd movie happened in an alternate universe or that it didn’t happen at all. That movie ruined the end of this one 🙄😞🤧.
@@slcRN1971 As i said... WE. DONT. TALK. ABOUT. THAT. Like that hollywood live action movie from a globaly loved anime from the lates 80s early 90s and that other live action adaptarion from that nickelodeon series... they never happened... those were fever dreams.
13:41 That got the biggest laugh in the theatre when this was released.
Funny story, when Newt is captured the entire theater practically had a collective nervous breakdown.
When it was revealed that she was ok, a woman near the front of the theater said really loudly, "OH GOD, SHE'S STILL ALIVE!"
The theatre went completely mad laughing!
I had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard!
Great memory.
Damn, I don’t think we’ve seen Natalie this angry, ever 😂😂
Can you imagine Alien 3, more specifically the opening? It'll easily surpass her anger in this movie.
@@Wilmeiser It surpassed mine until Star Trek V gave me an industrial strength version of it.
Well she WAS pretty damn angry at Pippin touching skeletons in Moria... 😂
Bassic That’s what I was thinking, that’s really the only other notable time I think I remember her loosing her cool.
Not to be patronising towards her, but Natalie just doesn’t seem like a person who gets angry easily. When she does, it stands out 😂😂
10 bucks she starts Alien 3 and 5 minutes in she turns it off in anger.
I would.
"I feel like I've never wanted a character to die so much."
Want to know who else felt that way? Paul Reisser's (the actor who played Burke) own mother.
Nice one. I had forgotten she actually said that.
Actual exchange from Mad About You: Jamie: Did you see the Alien movies? Paul: Only the first one.
I recommend "Tremors" next
Aw yeah, I second that motion! XD
Yep, that's a worthy one; Kevin Bacon at his wise-ass best
I recommend 1, 2, 3(eh if you must), and 5
"Look at all these people who are gonna die." You made me laugh out loud. That was great, and prescient.
Edit: Terminator or Terminator 2 or The Abyss Next?? Continuing in James Cameron's Oeuvre....
Ripley "This little girl has survived all this time all by herself!"
Hudson "Why don't you put her in charge then!" 😂
Funniest line in the movie!!
Hey sarge!
How do I get out of this chicken shℹt outfit?
Hudson was the best... ULTIMATE BADASS! RIP Bill Paxton!
I've got to say Nat, you are doing a great job with making your reactions a decent length, you're killing it!
Natalie: "They need to capture whatever is in Ripley's blood."
Me: "Well..."
What are you implying? Are you saying that in a possible instalment in this franchise, perhaps a fourth film that they do something like that? Ridiculous!
@@nagi159 How absurd, right?
@@nagi159 Yeah that would never happen. Never. And if it ever did, we would never speak of it. Do I make myself clear?
@@xen0bia Indeed! Thankfully it doesn't exist so we don't have to worry about that
What's funny is that was the first alien movie I totally didn't see because it doesn't exist but hypothetically because I saw it first if it did exist I actually thought it was a decent movie nothing compared to aliens but it was ok. Hypothetically speaking
