      My biggest recommendation as a motorcycle racer: there is nothing more epic than cockpit and helmet cam footage... The pilots always mention how epic it is inside the cockpit... So show us!

      Yup... 360° coverage would also be great next time. A camera on each sides in the back would not have been a luxury. Most of the fight would have looked more epic from these viewpoints.
      Though this was definitely an improvement.
      Close-up of damages and repairs during the animation are still another possible upgrade.

    And here they are folks.... they're coming at eachother..... Gonna collide eventually..... any day now..... and now here he goes, swinging back for a hit! Still back swinging! And here comes the punch! Still coming... still coming..... and there it goes! It hit... the foam.... this is history folks... history.

    that was a significant improvement over the last match in my opinion. A suggestion now would be focusing on weapon types, trying to determine which weapons would be effective in the given scenario. the potential is huge.

    • @angolin9352
      @angolin9352 7 років тому +1

      That was easily the fakest thing in either robot fight. No hydraulic system could lose that much fluid and still function on any level.

    • @offbeatrobotics
      @offbeatrobotics 7 років тому

      I'm not sure I follow, Iron Glory stopped working because it ran out of hydraulic fluid in Round 2 and Round 3.
      If you watch the live stream you can watch Iron Glory be refilled with hydraulic oil and repairs be made.

    • @angolin9352
      @angolin9352 7 років тому +1

      After springing a major leak, smaller-scale hydraulic systems lose all pressure (therefore all force it can exert) immediately, and even minor leaks cause a system to be dead in the water within a minute. This is inherent to how hydraulic systems work.
      Also, I don't know what kind of hydraulic fluid they were using, but if it's anything like brake or transmission fluid, they couldn't have all those people there during a major leak. Brake fluid, like most petroleum products, is toxic to humans, though brake fluid is especially toxic and transmission fluid is so bad that you're advised to wash your hands immediately if you get some on them. I dripped some brake fluid on my plastic headlights, wiped it off as soon as I could, and they still got a spot on them I had to buff out.

    You guys need weight classes. Kuratas was clearly in a much lower class weighing alot less than Eagle Prime and soooo much less hp at 80hp to Eagles 400hp. And engineering and arsenal would play a part in it too. Bringing weight classes into it would help make the fights alot more balanced and fair and make for a more exciting match as it could go either way. Example. Iorn Glory would be rank one. Kuratas would be rank two. And Eagle Prime would be like rank three XD

    • @GoGunCo
      @GoGunCo  7 років тому +42

      We definitely agree on weight classes! What do you think about piloted robots getting weight handicaps over remote control robots, though? Is 2X weight too much of a handicap?

    • @contar549
      @contar549 7 років тому +10

      MegaBots Inc I'd say maybe a 10-20% handicap on weight would be fair, 2x is a bit much I think

    • @MrBuffalohorn
      @MrBuffalohorn 7 років тому +4

      Handicaps will help the "eb and flow" of varying budgets/designs coming in from different teams.

    • @Mal_ware_666
      @Mal_ware_666 7 років тому +26

      I feel like remote controlled robots should be in a different division than piloted ones, Because when there are no pilots your are more free to use more dangerous weapons as opposed to when there are pilots that you have to be mindfull of so you dont seriously injure them, Fighting a Remote controlled robot would give the pilot an unfair advantage because the Remote controlled one would have to watch what weapons to use and where to use them and the one with the pilot would not have to

    • @Mal_ware_666
      @Mal_ware_666 7 років тому +9

      Also that could mean more interesting shows too, because those that want to see more carnage would tune into the non piloted ones because it would be a no holds bard match up because there are no humans. And the ones with piloted bots would be damaged but the damage would be fixable because of the human element and that also means a higher chance of seeing that robot fight again which would give the audiance the option of chosing favorites instead of expecting to see one completly destroyed never to return

    The grapple is a bit OP, I feel like the battles would be much more spectacular and long-lasting if they had to rely on punching, with big windups and hard hits. When iron glory punched eagle prime during the second part everyone cheered, I think that's where its at.

    Missed it live, so im glad i can watch a shorter version here instead of going through what i imagine was an hour or 2 long stream over on twitch.
    After finishing the video, i love the idea of using foam as armour, not only does it make the destruction more visually appealing but i'd assume it would also be cheaper and lighter allowing the machines to be faster.

    • @brianp6859
      @brianp6859 7 років тому +1

      I think as more regulations are agree upon (especially concerning safety of the pilots) more destructive weapons will be allowed allowing for and creating the need for better armor. It will still be visually appealing, just way more intense.

    • @Drakefance5
      @Drakefance5 7 років тому +1

      Brian P well yeah, we saw a glimpse of the more destructive effects with the chainsaw, but those weapons aren't going to be used as often as the claws which seem to be more or less just scratching the opponent...

  • @AsscrackistanMapping

    I suggest that there be several types of battles, battles involving piloted robot vs piloted robot, controlled robots, ranged fights using paint cannons, mixed fights, blunt weapon fights, sharp weapon fights etc. Good work guys, this really is the beginning of a whole new type of sport.

  • @Saprosis

    The commenting here was so much better than the battle with Kuratas. The people there seemed more alive and involved (especially when interviewing/socializing with the pilots), though I felt like the phrase "This Is Live" was used like 15 times (I didn't count). The first round, in comparison to 2nd and 3rd round, seemed to have the most logical rules with no grabbing or knocking over allowed. More fight time means more experience. But all in all, everyone here seemed so much happier and interactive (than the prerecorded battle and random commentators). I look forward to seeing more! Keep asking your fans and yourselves questions on how to proceed and ideas!!

    • @bohemondiofantioch539
      @bohemondiofantioch539 7 років тому +21

      +brandonac45 gaming I don't think that is ever going to happen. These things cost millions of dollars, they are way to expensive to replace after every fight. There are plenty of ways to have a good fight without it being to the death. UFC isn't to the death, and its got plenty of fans. And as for "real guns" what do you mean? Because tank are already the best weapons platform available for land vehicles, so there's no point in making expensive robots to tell us that. Unless of course you want a rc, live sized tank battles, which would be admittedly cool as hell, although it would be different from this. Do you mean keep it mostly about melee combat but give them machine guns to destroy sensitive parts of the robot? Because that doesn't seem like it would make up for the entertainment lost by making them unmanned.

    • @nicholassuntken8984
      @nicholassuntken8984 7 років тому +6

      So, you want to go watch "Robot Wars". That's what you're talking about. It's a great show but part of the draw of this is that the pilots have to be INSIDE of the machine. Also, tanks may not be the BEST land based weapons platform. Mostly because tanks have never faced "Giant Robots" though.

    Great job guys! This is a great step in the right direction. I'm still hoping for a full league someday. Still you guys seem to have really helped reignite the imagination of a generation for mechs. It was my dream growing up, and it's getting closer every day now.
    Although, there seems to be a big mismatch between the two of them, and with only the two fighting that makes it less interesting over a long period. It also isn't as exciting when they get into the big grapple. They just don't twist fast enough to make the clinch look like pulse pounding action. I'd prefer to see more long and mid range mixed back in. Even if it meant adding areas that shut down different parts of the mech when hit. Sort of like a kill switch if that makes sense.

    Speaking long-term for the possible sport you're trying to build (and we hope you succeed in building!), I can only really see two ways of making the fights both impressive to watch but keep people from being injured or killed.
    1. Both robots are remote controlled, hopefully with a secure system because no one wants a rampaging robot.
    2. Both are piloted, the weapons are designed to pose no real threat to the pilots, and the robots are designed to take damage in some flashy fashion like with break away parts, maybe aluminum panels or otherwise things.

    I'm happy that you're actively pursuing making robot fights a reality! I think almost all of us who grew up watching cartoons and anime wished that our beloved robots/mechs would become reality someday. Although this thing is still in its infancy, I can already imagine a future where battles would actually resemble those that we have fantasized about from our cartoons/anime shows.
    In my opinion, one way to add excitement to a fight is SPEED. I think this is one problem that you'll really need to solve. Giant robots that barely move aren't that exciting. I would rather see smaller robots that are more agile, able to jump or cling to walls and then shoot projectiles or perform neat acrobatic attacks. Then again, that wouldn't really be "giant robot" battles anymore. I guess one solution that I can imagine is the use of "boosters" if that can actually work in real life and not just cartoons/anime. For example, a giant robot that wants to perform a dashing attack can use a quick burst of speed using its boosters. The robot will then move faster with more force as if it's some angry dude wanting to bash a beer thief. Of course those things are very advanced but I'm sure your level of technology will get to that point someday.
    By the way, one thing that I enjoyed with the fight against the Kurata was when they launched that unexpected drone in the air. Although it was pretty much pointless (what was it even supposed to do?!), it did add something different to the fight. I think having drones or assistant bots would be great in fights. For example, maybe you could have a set limit of drones or assistant bots a giant robot fighter can have. Maybe a limit of 2. One drone can probably perform distraction like launching little smoke grenades, while the second drone can either lodge itself in the opponent robot's mechanical parts to hinder its movements or completely immobilize it.
    Another thing that would be cool is if the robots can use MARTIAL ARTS to do battle! Imagine robots doing judo throws or WWE wrestling moves, that would be entertaining! It would also be great if each robot had a signature finishing move. Just because this is a "real" robot battle doesn't mean you can't be flashy and have style! Just imagine a battle between two giant robots. Robot A launches two drones, one to distract Robot B and another to jam one of its limbs. The drones manage to distract Robot B and the sacrificial drone successfully jams itself into Robot B's left defensive arm, rendering it useless. Sensing that Robot B is now a sitting duck, Robot A pulls out its "Axe of Destruction!" from its back and then it uses its booster to charge right into Robot B! As Robot A charges forward, it performs a spin attack with its axe called "Hell's Tornado" and then it chops off Robot B's upper body from the lower body! The crowd cheers and Robot A's theme song plays in the background!
    Anyway those are just things that immediately come to mind for me. I wish to see more giant robot battles and I hope we'll someday get closer to those cartoon/anime style battles! Oh yeah, it would also be awesome if you could somehow engineer the bots to have legs and not just wheels. Entertainment doesn't mean they always need to be made for functionality. Maybe we could have different types of battles. A stylistic one where robots can have legs or maybe even hover on the ground where fights are meant to be for fun and excitement, and then also a "realistic functional" battle where everything is technical, meant for maximum efficiency, and entertainment is not the main point.
    Keep up the great work!

    Just would like to add that perhaps weapons ranging from ranged to up close should me be made available. If limited projectiles such as paint balls are used then why not have kill switches throughout the mechs that cause armor ejections or disabling of system or limbs if hit. It would help in giving a reason to have weapons other then hugging and grappling each other until something gives. Keep up the god work guys. This is the future just like the Drone Racing League!

    after seeing this i finally know what's wrong here
    in my opinion using hydraulics was a poor choice
    a robot that's electric from the "waist" up would be superior due to the massive torque that electric motors have and the redundancy they provide (if one burns out the others can keep going instead of one leak powering down all systems)
    if done right a bot with such hardware would be able to pull off quicker , more sudden movements , making the fights more organic ,on top of that without hydraulics in the way it would be hardier
    to provide power to such a beast id that the newly developed solid state lithium batteries that simoutaneously provide2-3 times the energy density of a current tech lithium battery while being impossible to explode
    obviously remote control would be superior , remooving the risk would allow for more extreme combat , a control cockpit with a vr headset as the interface that would follow the head's movement (as they use for drone racing) would be perfect and control would be done in a specialised cockpit with intuitive control systems
    speaking with controls i would suggest grouping up with suitobashi and developing an arm following technology (i've seen something similar in one of their vids) that would allow the robot's arms to be controlled by following the movement of the arms of the user making combat even more organic
    finally adding one "hand" by implementing the previously mentioned control system could allow "holster sidearms" such as swords or guns a robot could use alongside it's mounted weapons (imagine a massive rifle or sword being wielded ...... orgamsic)
    though this would result in a bulkier bot it would be closer to what we see in sci-fi

      I totally agree with electronic motors being an interesting idea. The only issue that I can see with electric components, would be the battery issue. Lithium ion batteries catch fire when punctured, and there is a high potential for that in this type of fight. Pilot safety is the key factor. As for the remote controled versions, I say don't use them. The appeal of these fights is for piloted machines. If you go remote controled, then it just becomes a scaled up version of RoboWars.

    • @fl00fydragon
      @fl00fydragon 7 років тому +4

      Joshua Abrams i addressed the issue with batteries
      Solid electrolyte lithium batteries don't explode and can store more energy
      (also for responsiveness and arm control tech that mechs could use look at the all electric method 2 mech that a Korean company made)

      fl00fydragon electric motors are much more fragile than electric, and the heat generated by them is much greater than that of hydraulics. They just did a poor job of protecting the lines and creating remote shut off valves at each limb to prevent "bleeding out"

    This is crazy amazing! It's definitely a different feel from the Kuratas fight. The price you pay is stuff like round 1 happening in the shot, but hey if that's what people want, I say give 'em live! Personally I don't actually think the prerecorded version of the Kuratas fight was necessarily a mistake. It was an experiment, and you learned from it. I'm sure it also let you iron out some of the kinks off camera so that for this round you had a better idea of what you were doing going in. I eagerly await to see how this evolves and to see what you guys come up with for next time. Mad props!!
    To everyone who only thinks this is "lame" or that "the pilots are bad": you clearly have no grasp of the limitations of current technology (and without an unlimited budget no less) compared to whatever you see in the movies, on TV, or in an anime; nor do you understand the concept of a learning curve. Everyone starts somewhere. Right now we're newbies and we're still learning how things work in a practical context. Memorizing controls, training muscle memory, adapting to unfamiliar situations, and reacting to unforeseen problems are just a few of the time intensive things that can only now finally start to happen now that we actually have a giant fighting robot that we can practice with.

  • @bohemondiofantioch539

    As I thought, the weapons that relied on ke generated by the arms and torso weren't particularly useful. Powered weapons look like they are going to be the way to go for awhile. Some better armour will also allow the mechs to give bigger and harder hits; which is more fun for everyone. Weapons like grinders, Tombstone-esk spinners, abrasive jet saws, pneumatic hammers, pneumatic spikes, wrecking ball flails, and shields will all be some cool weapons to see. Also, strategic placing of small, dremel tool like buzz saws on the forearms should discourage grappling in favor of striking ua-cam.com/video/wIHwqPAgA9I/v-deo.html that would mess up and grabbing implements. They also obviously need to sort out their engines, and they need some better protection for their hydraulic lines, but I'm optimistic that they can pull it off.

    I have to say this was SO MUCH better than the previous one. Thank you for listening and wanting to do better.
    Before and after discussions with pilots was a lot more interesting this time around. Would have liked to have heard from the engineers a bit as they were fixing them up.
    Obviously there's a lot to improve on but much of that is easily due to this being a much lower budget and live event and obviously I expect that as you are beta testing what this is eventually going to look like so all the following comments are with that in mind.
    We need better camera work. The first match especially looked incredibly disappointing despite apparently there being quite a few hits in. This is true of later fights but here especially I think a lot more of the action was on the opposite side of what wee saw. A non-live fight (but still real-time) would have the time to better pick angles.
    More camera angles. With the robots up close for a lot of the fight they obscure each other. A drone camera or two getting arial shots would provide a better view and more interest cut in with the rest. Similarly a go-pro or two on the arms or cockpit so we can see hits and see what a pilot would be seeing (more so than the cockpit seeing the pilots).
    Sound. Again something that would need to be done in post by mixing the channels but we don't get to hear much of the bangs and scrapes. It would be great to hear the relevant pilot chats too,
    Starting positions. All 3 fights start with a straight movement in and I think that's going to get old. Even just having them face away or behind obstacles would help. This means there's more tactical decisions at the start. Do you turn right around, try and circle in etc and also gives an edge to having maneuverability.
    Looking forward to the next test fight. Hoping you can find ways to integrate long range or useful objects in the arena (eg picking up cars to hit each other with).

      One ting to consider is the production side. These need to be cheap and easy to make while they are in battle testing so less impressive camera shots and editing. Also being live means that picking the right camera for a certain shot or even having enough cameras is an issue for now.
      Unlike the last fight where they used production to cover up an unimpressive fight I'd rather they focus on the fight format first then work out the production to show it off.

    For instance, the pneumatic fist on Cherno Alpha from Pacific rim packs a meaty punch (to illustrate my point:))

    • @ditmarvanbelle1061

      I don't think force is the problem -- they're both too heavily armoured (to protect the pilot) versus the damage they put out. They seem to do alright pummeling up cars, so once they go full remote-controlled perhaps there'll be less need for heavy armour and thus (a) more impact, (b) more agility... ?
