    I did one today on a 2004. Watched your video for a refresher as I've been out of the automotive field for 5 years and my tools have seen little use. Came out of retirement for a friend of mines son's first car. I've fallin far since my glory days of whipping these out in 45min. with a water pump change if I might boast. I sucked hot air today. Triple digits in North Texas, on my back in the garage, standing up/laying down/standing up........ WHERE IS MY LIFT TO GET THIS CAR IN THE AIR?!!! Yes, yes I am spoiled. You did a pretty detailed job with this sir. I would add: As cheap insurance of your time. Replace the water pump and thermostat while your doing this job. The water pump WILL NOT come out without removing the timing belt. You'll have to redo the whole job if that pump starts leaking. Save yourself the headache. My opinion, not everyone's.

    This is the best how-to,you will find anywhere online for a belt replacement on an early rio.Thank you
    very much For the time and effort you put into it all those years ago.I spent over 2 hours looking for the crankshaft bolt rotation,with no luck,then this just popped up and its so easy to follow...Cheers.

    I've debated on changing my timing belt myself as it has been due for about 5 or 6 thousand miles.. Your video was very helpful and I might actually try to attempt to do this myself. I am very mechanically inclined, but seeing a video step by step of how it is done has dramatically improved my self-confidence in doing it myself. Thanks :)

    Gave it some thought. I think that you can leave the crankshaft bolt in place and just remove the 10mm bolt holding the pulley/harmonic balancer on. My alternator gave out after 175,000 miles. Rebuilt alternator was designed to fit multiple makes of vehicles. Went to tighten the long bolt on the bottom, it never got tight. Ended up finding a longer 3/8ths stainless steel bolt at Tractor Supply. Used a 3/8ths locking collar as a spacer and a neoprene self locking nut to tighten it up. Works good.

    If you live in a region where they salt the roads in the winter be sure to check the bracket on the coolant bypass pipe that runs behind the exhaust manifold. The bracket is welded to this pipe and is held in place by one of the nuts for the exhaust manifold. My pipe had rusted under the bracket where it is welded onto the pipe. Started leaking antifreeze when I was replacing my exhaust manifold and cat. New pipe cost less than $50.00 .

    Just wanted to say "Thanks" your video was perfect I just did my first front wheel drive timing belt and it's purring like a kitten, I also did the motor mounts (all 3), a new CV axle and spindle and hub (drivers side), almost feels new but it only has 76,000 miles.

      Tensioner pulley has a spring that should put enough tension on the belt. I don't entirely trust it, so I use my hand to push the tensioner a little more on the belt before I tighten down the tensioner assembly. Just turned 190,000 miles and still running strong. People who drive it always ask me if I want to sell it. :)

    Thanks for the upload, it gave me a push and a bit more confidence to do it on my car. It's not a very complicated job, but the room is a bit tight. Done other stuff but never replaced a cambelt before i always thought it was a babadook. Took me 4.5 hours. Somebody did the crankshaft pulley bolt up so tight had to get a 3/4" impact gun to undo, otherwise no dramas.

    the reason im trying to change the timing belt is because the rio just stoped all of a sudden on the side of the road and it wouldnt crank since then any input would b very apreciated since i think it has something to do with the timing belt or camshaft the timing belts not torn as far as i can see with the top cover off

    • @TheBGravit
      @TheBGravit  8 років тому

      +Fabian Villa Since you were driving this when it happened I would prepare for the worst case scenario. There is always a remote possibilty the engine is ok. You will not know for sure until you tear into it. Sadly odds are in favor that your engine is a goner. A used motor will cost around $1000.00, then of course labor. I wish you the best.
      If you move onto another vehicle (especially a used one). Check to see if it has a timing belt and when it was last replaced. They are typically good for about 6 years (yes they can dry rot) or 60,000 miles.
      Some engines out there like the 2.2 Ecotech used in a lot of GM vehicles have a timing chain. They did have some problems with the tensioner breaking on earlier engines.
      Just found a 2004 Saturn Ion for my sister in-law for $800.00 on Craigslist. Had 169,000 miles but still runs great and is a basic 4 door, 5 speed manual sedan... Very comparable to the Rio. Anyway it has the 2.2L Ecotech motor. No issues that I have found with it yet. Of course it was one of those GM ignition switch issue recall cars and there are some other minor concerns, but it is hard to go wrong for the price. I spent that much for tires for my 2002 4Runner.

    Have a video on how I re-adjusted my rear wheel bearing on my channel and I have around 10,000 with no issues. Bought my bearings, races and seals at NAPA. Important to replace the races along with the rear bearings. Need to buy new nuts for the spindle from dealer to achieve proper torque. Also use a synthetic hi-performance wheel bearing grease. I would also buy new dust caps. Still on my original front wheel bearings with 160,000 miles.

    Good video helpful, i just had problem when installing belt could not get it on because of tension from the spring, so, took of spring, lined up all mark again, put belt on then put spring on anchor pin the pulled spring on to tensioner with extra long needle nose pliers 13 inch, tightened tensioner bolt, cranked the crank shaft with socket and ratchet, three marks lined up nice did it twice to make sure, harbor freight 4 dollar tool made the difference.

    Great video. Got into a little trouble. When I took cam gears off I did not notice each gear is marked I and E. Plu not sure if I have cams 180 degrees off on both. A pin oriientates gear to cam by slot on the gear. BUT! both gears have two slots. I think they did this so cam gear can be I or E. Thing is how does one know if each cam is 180 degrees wrong?

      i guess the question is when crankshaft is tdc, then I suppose #1 cylinder should be tdc. Then turning both valve cams I should see tdc follow firing order. One revolution of crank should produce 4 tdc in the firing order

    My way to unscrew the crankshaft 21 mm bolt is to place a wrench key and turn it clockwise until it supports any fixed part of the car and then i give a small crank using the electric starter.Woks well , but this is of course if you don't have those special tools.

    loosening the main crank pulley vibration damper ?one thing ive done many engines turn in the direction as to simply put a good half inch socket and breaker bars onto the crank bolt and simply hit the starter it will spin the bolt off so easy but you have to get your socket and bar proped right, and square; this is before you loosen any of the belt stuff ok? also if its like some nissans you will wont to heat the bolt as it may have locktight but not on most crank bolts ok? thanks !

    I had the head rebuilt and was wondering if anyone might know what the torque is for the head bolts for my 2002 kia rio? I'm also replacing the timing belt while I got it down this far, so this video is a MAJOR help. Any other tips I might need to know would be a help too. This is not my line of work, but I know how to turn bolts and bust knuckles real good. A jack of all trades and a master of none!

    That bolt on the crank can sure be a pain. If you have a pneumatic impact wrench you can probably get it right off. There are other ways to break it loose, but they sound a bit scary. My Rio has around 175,000 miles and I am still on my original water pump, but your situation may be different. Good luck with your project.

    Yes it is a fairly easy procedure....Hmmm Ford Escort....I wonder if the similarities are because the engine in this Rio is based on a Mazda engine. Ford and Mazda worked together since the 70's (Ford Courier Pickup) and it was Ford that gave KIA its start in the U.S. with the KIA Pride/Ford Festiva. Very interesting.

    Done mine by changing water pump, camshaft oil seal, tensioner and Idle Pulley, timing belt. All marks are set correct, the camshaft Intake/Exhaust marked to arrow back of the camshaft pulley and crankshaft curve marked to the arrow on the engine block. Unfortunately, when started the engine vibrates...the exhaust sounds unstable....any opinion....?tq

    • @markfothebeast
      @markfothebeast 8 років тому

      It sounds like the timing is off. Perhaps it jumped a belt tooth? However, the sensitive wiring could have been bumped and sent a sensor haywire like on my 02 Kia.

    • @suzaliemohdantang
      @suzaliemohdantang 8 років тому

      Thank you. Sensitive wiring bumped, which one is it? How do you correct yours?

    • @TheBGravit
      @TheBGravit  8 років тому

      I would double check your crank timing mark first, then the intake and exhaust timing marks. When the tensioner is snugged up and you manually crank the engine over once completely, all timing marks should line up. When you set the timing with the belt loose... and you tighten the tensioner, it can throw the timing on the cams out a bit. If you had one cam...thinking the intake off a tooth... It might look fine when the tensioner is loose but be out when you snug up the tensioner. Hope this is helpful.

    • @markfothebeast
      @markfothebeast 8 років тому

      Another thought. Do you get a check engine light? connect a live data scanner and watch the timing advance. Also check that all cylinders are getting a spark. Doing a vacuum test should show 21-23HG at idle. Short term fuel trim should be between -5 and 5. It might be something other than the timing belt like something that may have forgotten to get plugged back in. Or a failed crank or cam sensor that is throwing off timing.

    • @TheBGravit
      @TheBGravit  8 років тому

      You can also pull the valve cover off, line up all three timing marks on timing belt then check the camshaft lobes for the #1 cylinder (closest to the timing belt). When cylinder 1 is at top dead center TDC the high spots of the lobes will be off lifters/tappets (whatever they call them). Taking the plug out for that cylinder and placing a long rod, dowel or screwdriver down into that cylinder will allow you to tell when the piston is at the top of its travel. If it is running rough this could be caused by many things. If the engine broke the belt while running you could have bent the valves or even worse punched holes in a piston or pistons. If it overheated you could have cracked, warped the cylinder head or blown a head gasket. Could be something minor like the firing order out or a bad plug wire.

    Thanks...Sadly the Yugo was a great idea and a decent car (essentially a Fiat), but with horrible Quality Control. Believe Malcolm Bricklyn was responsible for bringing them to the U.S. My girlfriend had bought one new and as she drove it away from the dealership she turned on the windshield wipers and they fell off. Knew a guy that had a Fiat X19 and he replaced his engine with one pulled from a Yugo.

    • @TheBGravit
      @TheBGravit  8 років тому

      Important!!! This is interference engine!!! If the pistons are not moving then the valves are coming down... opening... and hitting the top of the piston. If you try to force it it could bend a valve :( . If the car was running before this was done then you are most likely ok. If it broke the timing belt when running then probably not. Sounds like you are trying to turn the camshaft too far and the valves are coming in contact with the top of the piston. Recheck to make sure you are using the correct timing marks. Hope this helps :)

    • @TheBGravit
      @TheBGravit  8 років тому

      +TheBGravit Sorry about the extra replies... Phone was acting screwy. At my computer now...
      If you were replacing the timing belt then at about 4:07 on this video you saw me lining up the marks with the old belt still on. I have heard that newer engines have different timing marks, but mine is what a 2002 KIA Rio would have and the engine was never replaced.
      Notice there is a "E"and a "I" on both camshaft sprockets. This is because they are interchangeable. The intake camshaft is on the back side of the engine and the exhaust camshaft is on the front side of the engine.
      At 6:40 I show the crankshaft timing mark, still with the old timing belt on. This is TDC (Top Dead Center) for cylinder 1.
      That means the #1 piston is at its upper most point of travel and both intake and exhaust valves for this cylinder should be closed. The other 3 cylinders are at different steps in the process. This is a 4 stroke engine so you have 1-Intake, 2-Compression, 3-Power (Combustion) and 4-Exhaust. Cylinder 1 is at the very beginning of step 3. The other 3 cylinders at one of the other steps in the process.
      Now when you say you can not turn the camshaft because it is binding. This leads me to believe that you have the timing belt off (or extremely loose) and the pistons are not moving so some valves are hitting. If the car was running before you began this process you are ok. If you are attempting to replace a broken belt, then you may have damage inside the engine causing your problems. Interference engines are wonderfully efficient, but when the timing belt breaks they are very rarely ever able to run again unless rebuilt. Possibly a new cylinder head as well.
      Since I do not know everything that happened leading up to your problem, I have to make a best guess.
      At 7:16 I am trying to align the Exhaust Cam sprocket. It is on the front side of the engine and has the "E".
      At 8:03 I am aligning the Intake "I" camshaft sprocket. It is at the back side of the engine.
      If for some strange reason this some how got all messed up, then you could pull the spark plugs and turn the crankshaft until all pistons were down the cylinder away from the valves. You could check this with a pieice of long wire. Like a welding rod or coat hanger. This would allow you to turn the camshafts to get them close to where they need to be. Then bring the crankshaft back up to it timing mark.
      Hope this helps.

      +TheBGravit A very important step in the timing belt replacement procedure is aligning up these timing marks before you pull the belt off.

      If it jumped timing down on the crankshaft then the top 2 camshaft marks may look fine but still be out of time. Had a friend with a Yugo that could not get the motor to turn over one winter morning. Snow had got inside and caused it to jump time on the crank and when he tried to start it he just got a clunking noise from the engine. I was able to pull the belt and realign and luckilly he did not damage his engine. Take your Spark plugs out to make it easier to turn over by hand and look for the timing marks on the crankshaft belt pulley. There are timing marks on the bottom plastic cover you can line this up with. Then look at your camshaft timing marks to see if they are aligned.

    Also here is a good link about timing belts from DAYCO. Search for " DAYCO the forgotten belt "
    It is on UA-cam

    Having the timing belt go is typically very bad. Do not know if you had the engine torn down after it happened. You could ave a bent valve or damaged piston. 2002 was around the time Hyundai got involved with KIA, so your 2003 most likely has a Hyundai engine.
    Do a Google/online search for...
    kia rio forums
    A lot of good info/threads on that website and the people are pretty helpful.

    Timing belt should be done every 60,000 miles to be safe. I have had as much as 80,000 miles on one but would not recommend anyone going this far between changes. Engine is junk if it goes. It is an easy job for a decent garage and should only cost around $300.00 to do it. If you have the water pump replaced while they are in there maybe $400.00 to $500.00.

      Im pretty sure these are non interference engines being a mazda b5 engine. If timing belt snaps the valves shouldnt hit the pistons

    • @TheBGravit

      If you are concerned about being a tooth out, just manually crank the motor using a wrench on the crankshaft until the timing marks line up again and check to see if they are right. If not move the belt enough to adjust the gear that is off with a wrench. Then crank it over again and check. I find on my engine there is just the right spot where the cams do not move and allow me to get the belt on. I tend to hold the wrench on the intake cam as I am slipping on the belt. Hope this helps. Here are some various ways to hold the cams in place... www.google.com/search?q=camshaft+timing+sprocket+lock&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=KqDUVI1diKqCBP-bgiA&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAg&biw=1680&bih=924
