Games workshop EPIC Gandalf vs The Balrog Diorama!

  • I used the MESBG Gandalf and Balrog models from Games Workshop to build a Diorama of Durins Tower on the peak of Zirakzigil from The Lord Of The Rings, where Gandalf slays The Balrog, Durins bane. I am trying something that I have never tried before... recutting the footage from one of my favourite projects. Been considering this for a while. The previous cut of this video I attempted to cram in too much stuff with some lore about the Balrog and how Balrogs don't actually have wings etc. Maybe made a bit of a meal out of a mouthful haha Have also wanted to give a silent crafting a video a try and I thought this footage would work really nicely. Working on some projects behind the scenes that are taking some time... but they will eventually reach youtube. Fingers crossed :D

    My Diorama is based visually on the scene from Peter Jacksons films of course, but I love the way this encounter is described in the books so I thought I'd paste a short passage here :)
    'Long time I fell,' he said at last, slowly, as if thinking back with difficulty. 'Long I fell, and he fell with me. His fire was about me. I was burned. Then we plunged into the deep water and all was dark. Cold it was at the tide of death: almost it froze my heart.'
    'Deep is the abyss that is spanned by Durin's Bridge, and none has measured it,' said Gimli.
    'Yet it has a bottom, beyond light and knowledge,' said Gandalf. 'Thither I came at last, to the uttermost foundations of stone. He was with me still. His fire was quenched, but how he was a thing of slime, stronger than a strangling snake.
    'We fought far under the lviing earth, where time is not counted. Ever he clutched me, and ever I hewed him, till at last he fled into dark tunnels. They were not made by Durin's folk, Gimli son of Glóin. Far, far below the deepest delvings of the Dwarves, the world is knawed by nameless things. Even Sauron knows them not. They are older than he. Now I have walked there, but I will bring no report to darken the light of day. In that despair my enemy was my only hope, and I pursued him, clutching at his heel. Thus he brought me back at last to the secret ways of Khazad-dûm: too well he knew them all. Ever up now we went, until we came to the Endless Stair.'
    'Long has that been lost,' said Gimli. 'Many have said that it was never made save in legend, but others say that it was destroyed.'
    'It was made, and it had not been destroyed,' said Gandalf. 'FROM THE LOWEST DUNGEON TO THE HIGHEST PEAK it climbed, ascending in unbroken spiral in many thousand steps, until it issued at last in Durin's Tower carved in the living rock of Zirakzigil, the pinnacle of Silvertine.
    'There upon Celebdil was a lonely window in the snow, and before it lay a narrow space, a dizzy eyrie above the mists of the world. The sun shone fiercely there, but all below was wrapped in cloud. Out he sprang, and even as I came behind, he burst into new flame. There was none to see, or perhaps in after ages songs would still be sung of the Battle of the Peak.' Suddenly Gandalf laughed. 'But what would they say in song? Those that looked up from afar thought the mountain was crowned with storm. Thunder they heard, and lightning, they said, smote upon Celebdil, and leaped back broken into tongues of fire. Is that not enough? A great smoke rose about us, vapour and steam. Ice fell like rain. I threw down my enemy, and he fell from the high place and broke the mountain-side where he smote it in his ruin. Then darkness took me, and I strayed out of thought and time, and I wandered far on roads that I will not tell.'
    And for contrast, how the film scripts the same scene:

    I’ve said numerous times how I like all your creations. But your L.o.t.R.’s diorama’s are my absolute favorites. They are museum quality. You Are A Master Craftsman worthy of Aulë’s training.

    My god, the amount of work you put into the tower only to cover half of it and cut up the rest. A lesser artist would have half-assed it, but you went all out. Respect

    What is the thought process behind painstakingly modeling details which will then be covered up or carved away, and never seen in the final work?

    • @Nat1videos
      @Nat1videos  9 місяців тому +1

      Mostly because I enjoyed making the shape and I wanted to see it finished... but also because I didn't know exactly which side would be covered up as I wanted put it in side the foam for the mountain and carve it out. Lots of reasons really.... :)

      Hey, so I haven't been able to get it for a while either... They used to sell it at the under floor heating store online, but for some reason they only sell up to 10 mm thick now. I ended up getting my friend in Germany to send me some in a big box which is keeping me going!

    • @Treeslayer82
      @Treeslayer82 4 дні тому +1

      @Nat1videos thanks for the reply mate. It's annoying that the building trade in UK use PIR foam as main insulation for houses, xps is much better for us modellers 😊

    • @Nat1videos
      @Nat1videos  4 дні тому

      @@Treeslayer82 You can get it here..., search for Underfloor insulation Styrodur. This is the light green stuff, but it is XPS foam and it is just as good. They sell it in 100 mm thick sheets... Only problem is they don't sell it by the sheet, just big packs of like 6 sheets ... which most people can't store
