  • How to use a Chi Ishi. Chi Ishi (weighted levers) are concrete weights that are attached to a wooden pole. The practitioner strongly grips to the end of the wooden pole (opposite the concrete weight), and moves his or her wrist and arms in motions used in techniques normally used in kata or against opponents. This weighted training helps strengthens the fingers, hands, arms, and chest.

Thanks for video. I'm a complete beginner martial artist at age 38. The chi ishi accidentally became a very important breathing exercise for me, on top of everything else. I discovered this when I tried to do a max rep workout, and pushed myself to the limit only by learning to exhale on the squat/base position. It was like an epiphany for me, that I knew breathing was important for literally anything else I'd be doing.

It would be insane if you can show you’re daily or weekly training program, like what other than kata training you do!!!

This is an excellent training video. I am curious as to this tool strictly for exercise and attempting to keep my old body in shape (71). I was looking online at a 5 and 10 pound versions. I am not sure how large the one you are using. This is really a helpful video. Thanks.

Jim Goldstein thank you so much!! Sorry for the late reply. The one I’m using is 16lbs. Any weight actually helps. It’s the techniques you do with all the other body parts not holding the chi ISHI ‘

Congratulations on your blog. excellent exercise, I am of the Shotokan JKA style, I would like to know, what is your weight and where can I get it? I consider it to be an excellent exercise and I would like to implement it in my workouts. I would also like to know how many repetitions to perform. I appreciate your collaboration and congratulations on your excellent achievement at the Olympics.

Hey Ariel can you talk about the Weber Fechner Rule (Slow Practice) (if you use that in your training).
I really don't get how people can locate muscular imbalances through that.
Would be nice to hear how you approach that :D
