Just got this booger in the mail. 64$ shipping handling. I DON'T REGRET IT. Just wanted to really thank you for being cool enough to take the time for those of us to scared to disassemble for fear of not knowing wth we're doing. Appreciate you literally going over it step by step. Very cool
This is one of the " how to videos " that actually worked ! I was able to tune my knife and it works great now. It was stiff and hard to open. With your help all issues were corrected. Thank you for your time. 👍🏽👍🏽
Kind sir, thank you for your highly instructive video. I use my vantage as my EDC and the poor thing suffered from all of the aforementioned maladies. Following along with your video, pausing as needed, I had them solved in under 30 minutes. My heartfelt thanks and cheers from the peanut gallery.
Just an observation... From my experience, the small Buck Vantage Pro (opened three knives) has a riveted frame and does not lend itself well to tuning. The scales are put on with screws and so is the pivot but the rest of the frame cannot be loosened up or adjusted in any way. Great post by the way. A lot of information and easy to follow.
If it rattles when the knife is closed or the blade is locked open, it probly is the barrel spacer. If the knife rattles when the blade is out but not fully open, it is the pin that is the back stop for the blade when it opens, it goes through a hole in the blade and runs down slots in the liners. A little petroleum jelly stops it from rattling. Never dull to all contact points on the pivot mechanism makes it even smoother to open. If you want wooden scales, check out the bond arms vantage.
WOW so I just got my new buck vantage Avid ($50 version with rosewood scales) in and I immediately did not like the action on it at all. So i found your VERY helpful video on tuning it up. Opened it up and BAM, they completely changed how this flipper goes together now. its is no longer able to be broken down, you can take the scales off and the pivot screw out but THATS IT. the liners are riveted together now. I had to pry them apart to get the washers and the blade out. I still attempted to tune it up but since the liners are fixed to each other there was not much I could do other then clean and oil the blade and washers. put it back together and there was no difference. I wonder what else they cut back on with this knife because it just felt cheaply made. im guessing the older ones were much better from how popular it is. oh well its going back tomorrow, for the $50 I paid or another 10 15 bucks I could get something much nicer. keep the one you have, dont get a newer version.
after reading comments and almost being scared to purchase a vantage, i went ahead and bought one anyway. out of the package it was flipping and just off center a hair. got it worked out in the pivot pin. mine is also pinned. i wonder if that's saving them anything. also bronze washers, seen a few videos that had plastic in them.
so saw this vid as I was awaiting my vantage pro in the mail and was ready to tune it up. it came rather stiff so I opened it up and the frame is riveted together.... how can I loosen the flip now?
The new vantages are pinned now. You can try peening the pins to tighten them, but obviously that is more difficult adjustment. ua-cam.com/video/ySqwxPmF4-k/v-deo.html
Wasn't able to do this with my buck vantage avid. There were no screws on the frame of the knife, after I took the scales off. Just studs. Not sure why they would do this. Guess Im gonna have to send it in to buck.
That's unnerving. Maybe I got a preowned Vantage that was sold as new. I also noticed there were little scratches on the blade itself, but I figured that was normal.
Yah I just got my Buck Force Pro Vantage, a few weeks ago, and the frame is riveted together too? Don't know if they just started doing this, these recent yrs or what?
jamilthemaster I just got a force pro that was made in Jan 2015 and the spacer is pinned. Mine has a visible gap between the spacer and liner, which is causing all kinds of problems. Going to be sending it back to Buck; hopefully it comes back 100%, because if it does it will be a really solid knife for the price.
Great job. This video would save a lot of knives from being shipped back to Buck and other manufacturers. Knives are like cars, bikes,etc... They need maintenance. It isn't rocket science and people should know how to do it themselves.
Good video but i wouldent buy a knife that needs to be worked on so i can use it . i think buck missed the mark on this one as well with the 112 buck slim pro
I used to be a tried and true buck knife fan and have used them pretty much exclusively (I can count on one hand with a couple fingers left over the knives that I have owned that weren't Buck) since my first folding hunter at the age of 12 in 1978 (still have that knife and it has field dressed more animals than I can care to count), but I can pretty much say without much doubt but with some sadness that Buck knives have really gone down hill in recent years and that is being kind on the wording (and yes that is hard to say seeing that their main office/production plant is now located in the town I pretty much grew up in (Post Falls, Idaho), was just yesterday looking at the buck vantage pro and did some comparing to some other like priced knives by some other well known companies, and even some much cheaper ones and the buck was just about the worst of any that I looked at, you could say it was just that one knife but I have 2 other vantage's and neither of them would make me want to put my name on, COME ON BUCK GET YOUR HEAD BACK IN THE GAME you have the ability to make the very best there is yet you choose to make low grade crap, shame on you show some American pride like the good old days.
Yeah I have my uncles (now deceased) buck 102 fixed blade circa 1972. He had used/abused it well and it still takes an amazingly sharp edge today. I for the most part stick to crkt now.
I'm still in highschool so I can't buy the very best yet (i.e. Benchmade and Chris Reeve) without breaking the bank. I'm looking at the ripple, endorser, and hootenanny. I like ken onion's work. Looking to get a leek from Kershaw.
If you spend this much on what is supposed to be a higher end Buck, why would you need to do all of this work to make it right? Spend a little more and get a better quality knife right out of the box that doesn't have all of these issues. Spyderco, Zero Tolerance, etc. have much better quality and some are even less than the Vantage Pro. It seems the only thing Buck did was add premium S30V steel to a very poorly built knife.
Hale Storm Blades Because not everyone can afford a $200+ knife and for what it is it's a well built and high value American made knife. I have mostly Bucks, never had an issue with any of them and will continue to buy Buck.
Still crap in 2019 I for some reason tried to purchase another one. I love the design and the clean lines but buck doesn’t seem to care about quality anymore. The new ones come with the steel liners riveted and the pivot washers appear to be cheap gasket material or carbon fiber. Junk. I tried a spitfire awhile back and the machining was so horrible that the pivot moved side to side and back and fourth in the aluminum frame. Instead of scraping the knife like they should of they just piled the grease on the pivot to hide the rattle. Horrible and dangerous in my opinion to sell unsafe crap

I thought the new ones are pinned? Did you get select or pro level?

You did a TERRIFIC job with this tutorial. I am definitely going to tune my Vantage Avid now. You have given me the confidence I need.
Thanks!

Yeah I have a riveted one. Made greasing the pivot very difficult. Full disassembly was a headache putting back together. But great video.
To prevent Locktite from squishing into undesired spaces, apply it the tiniest drop(s) with a pointy tool, like a toothpick.
Love this knife! Abused the hell out of this knife, and performs incredible!. Looks almost new still!
did this with my new vantage, works smooth. kept the clip off, feels better in my pocket. thanks!

Yea I was wondering about the thread pitch. This video helped a ton!
Good job. Techniques can be applied to any folder. Thanks
Great vid. Real informative and useful. Just subscribed.
Thank you for putting me on the right path to look

magnetize the screwdriver tip.... makes getting each screw on the tip and staying easy.
Great job. Long but not tedious. Just enough. Thanks...
I bought the 2021 vantage avid and removed the casing! Guess what! It's bolted!

Nice tuning! Congrats.

Great vid on one of my fav knives!
My vantage force pro had two washers, the metal ones and the plastic ones. Yours didn't seem to have them though.
Just did this to mine oh my gosh it's sweet flips perfect now
Funny. My buck vantage pro is pinned instead of screwed in the frame. Still have rattle. My rattle was the stop pin. Don’t know how to fix it.

can be transformed rivets and bolts???
Do you knot what size screws they use I know they a t6

Maybe so. It's really annoying that you're not able to tune it up on your own.

***** rather than dicking with it and likely forfeiting the lifetime warranty the knife has, I'll send it back to Buck.
But thanks.

won't taking it apart void the warranty?
Lube! Look at Froglube. Food grade. Great stuff!
Thank You very much!
Good video but i wouldent buy a knife that needs to be worked on so i can use it . i think buck missed the mark on this one as well with the 112 buck slim pro
Fair enough.
You guessed right it was 2-56!
Thanks
My Buck vantage has rivets once you remove the grip. I don't think it was supposed to be like that.
thanks, that's a fail on bucks part. I had one of the earlier ones and received a newer model. I noticed a quality difference.

Darth Revan Yep and crkt does make some very good and nice knives, I think my next one is the Chris Reeves large sebenza.
I'm still in highschool so I can't buy the very best yet (i.e. Benchmade and Chris Reeve) without breaking the bank. I'm looking at the ripple, endorser, and hootenanny. I like ken onion's work. Looking to get a leek from Kershaw.
