I've had my vantage for a little over a year now and I love it. It's been used to cut everything from sushi to roof shingles. Looks beat up as all heck, but I think it just makes the knife look better.
Boxes, envelopes, rope, zip ties, cloth, food. That's what I use my EDC folder for. Fixed blades I use to practice making traps, feather sticks, camp cooking, etc. And I also use my fixed blades to baton and the larger ones to chop with.
I have a SOG Twitch 2 and it is a FANTASTIC knife! The steel has held it's edge, the handle is very comfortable, and the Speed-assist is incredibly fast. If any of SOG's knives are like my Twitch 2, then I would recommend any of their knives.
Great review! Had mine for a couple of years now and still running strong. Mine wears the zip-tie mod and still stays low profile. Oh and got the SV30 one online for around 60 bucks! Keep em coming brother and tc!
Nice review. I milled a few grooves on to the flipper so as to get more purchase. I also shaved away some of the scale by the thumb hole. That made it easier to open. I've been using mine off and on for over a year and my only complant is that its a little for its size. Good knife for the money and it's made in the USA.
I own a vantage pro with S30V - I personally think its a great knife if you are looking for a knife with that steel. You'll be hard pressed to find anything like it within the same price range. In my experience the S30V found on the Vantage seems harder than that of my Benchmade 940, which translates to a few more passes when it comes time to sharpen the blade.
Good review well balanced opinion .Of course once you start down the slippery slope of collecting knives to any degree you'll think one hundred dollars is no big deal for a half decent quality knife .I agree Buck does an excellent job with the Boss heat treatment of the 420 H.C. steel , but until you get pretty good at sharpening the S30 V is a better blade choice for the extra 30 bucks .Shop around and you can find the Vantage Pro for around fifty , then you don't need to sharpen it as much
would have been fine if you gave a closer look to the liner lock. Because with all vantages i did hav a hand on, the contact between liner and blade was terrible. It was touching the only on one edge-spot. For 20 $ not an issue maybe, but on the higher priced vantages it is in my opionion. and what do you think about the pivot? Ever took the knife apart? The pivot is thin like a needle. Does not make a stable impressionat all. so as a "beater" it would probably fail very soon on the pivot.
i purchased this knife a few months ago and have been pretty happy with it. The only thing I dont like is the fact that mine doesnt open smoothly. Maybe its my technique.
So I've purchased one of these, and am now waiting for it to come in the mail, and I was wondering about adding a lanyard- there's no lanyard hole, and with the deep carry I think I may want a little something hanging off the end to make retrieval easier. Anything wrong with just throwing the lanyard onto the pocket clip? I wouldn't think that that would add too much strain to the clip, and looking at the knife that appears to be the best location.
Thanks for the great review! I've been watching your videos for ages, and in the market for a good knife just as long... Unfortunately I live in Canada, and it's a HUGE pain to have knives sent here online... I finally broke and ordered this knife! It's funny, because shipping costs just as much as the knife itself -_- Thanks!
Very nice table and a very nice room as well. I am going to see if sportsmens whale house and or big 5 sports have this knife tomorow. Excellent review. The knife looks beautiful without that clip.
I unfortunately got a lemon that slipped through the cracks at the factory. Mine came missing one of the metal washers that space the blade. Luckily I keep a bunch of knife parts around and fixed that myself using a small washer from a small keychain assisted opening knife. It's perfect now, blade is exactly in the center and opens so friggen smooth you'd think its assisted.
Just some comments about my particular Buck Vantage: -The pocket clip feels GREAT to me. I really don't feel it at all -My centering is off; it touches the liner if you push it the slightest bit -I feel like the detent is a little too weak for my liking
My dad is a Komatsu mechanic and he graduated a one week class and as a gift, everybody got a Buck knife idk what model but on the blade is etched "Komatsu Technition" and h gave me the knife. It is a really nice knife!
News in Canada today (Aug 2 '19) about a Grizzly attack on a man in British Columbia. While the bear was gnawing on his left thigh, he managed to pull out a folder and stabbed the bear in its neck -- the bear immediately stopped biting and withdrew. The knife was briefly shown and it looked like some kind of Buck folder (which brings me here). The man got back on his bike and was able to get some help for his injuries. He said the bear was bleeding quite a bit. So just an interesting true story about how a simple folding knife saved a guy's life.
I disslike S30V for a beater but do like it for a regular EDC, best S30V deal ever use to be the S30V Native at walmart for $25...those days are gone, lol...
I actually got a autographed one a few years back from some convention. It's held up well in the past but sadly recently it's been lacking, if you could give me some advice of getting that edge back I would really appreciate it! Thanks!
i believe this off center blade issue lies in the liner lock. i got the vantage select knife today and the blade was dead center and the liner lock ended up in the middle. after opening and closing the knife several times the lock 'broke in' and now it goes all the way over; i noticed the blade wasn't center and the lock was pushing on the blade making it off center. i have no idea what would cause the liner lock to do this but apparently its an issue.
I have a question for ya brother, are bucks cheaper knives like this one also bos heat treated or are they done elsewhere because I was looking at these and it did not say so I never ended up pulling the trigger on it?!?!?
the vantage pro is the ultimate beater knife. s30v steel G10 solid construction. and it's just under 60 bucks. However my Vantage AVIDwith the sandvik steel has to go back to buck. In the 8 months that I have owned it the liner wore out to the point that I know have lock rock and the lock hits the opposite liner.
jeff the S30v with g10 handles was only $55 when I got it, I like 420 from buck as well but for twice the price you get 10 times the knife. I'm talking about the old plain S30v ones not the new $100 ones theres several different versions with S30v and one is seriously like $50-$60
So its 2016 Fav( 2-3) sub 100$ knife, 3-4 inch blade with VG10 or better? pref S30v or XHP So far this and Skyline is my pick. want to buy ASAP. **Do u know if this buck fits into a Gen 1 work sharp belt system?
Oh dang, Jeff. You just did it... again. You made me want a knife I didn't have on my radar. :) Not that this is a bad thing, but You just manage to make me want this knife so bad. Also, you saying it is better than the Tenacious (which I simply love) is a challenge I will accept. :) So I'm off ordering the knife now. Keep it up, man.
my neighbors are ready for anything now...Hey honey whats that guy next door doing today...? Hmmmm well looks to me hes talking about his penis to himself on the front lawn, ooooooooohh nice tan hes got
S30V is not a great beater steel at all, its much more brittle and will chip easier when pressures are applied, some poeple tend to think more expensive steels means better, it doesnt it means different
sorry i know this is an old video but i heard this has a double liner lock do u know what that means? also, what knife for about £40 would you recommend? lock knife, similar thing to the vantage in size
I carry a buck 110. But im tired of the weight. I wish the Vantage had a pocket clip, I really like the 420 HC. But, I think im going to have to go with the spyderco.
as somebody who is very opinionated on blades do you think sog knives are over hyped? i will be getting a salute black oxide model in the mail and for sub $30 folders sog seems at the top of their game
agree with the flipper needing to be larger. The centering isnt bad on mine. The edge grind though from the factory was HORRIBLE. For the money though I great knife.
so just another knife i cant import to australia because of it been able to flick open by gravity only way around it is to have it in kit form then reassemble then its legal to use but not carry
Got the BOS s30v version (model 347) on Amazon for $60 It's down to about $45 now. I got a second one later, I'll have a spare if I wear this one out. It's my EDC and I don't feel any need to look for anything else. I will anyway lol.
Guys, can anyone tell me what you use your knives for? Because I don't see it. I love knives myself (and have three good ones already and looking into buying like 10 more) but I just do not find that much use. Or I do not have that many occasions when I would need anything bigger and more expensive than my Victorinox Spartan. I would really love to know.
nar all good there as a kit it passes customs test of flip ability big crack down - cose they have no standard test so you don't know if it open on 1st go or 10th hard try so all folding knives now i ask for then to disasemble b4 they ship to me
well the Avid is only 5-15 bucks more than the select, and it has better handle material imo (dymondwood), and the steel is a sandvik 13c26 steel which is used for razor blades, so i imagine it would get pretty darn sharp :P so that would probably be the one to get i would imagine, i still havent gotten one, pretty sure i'll have one comming my way soon though :D
and i go fixed blades now most time cose we cant carry any knife at all and self defence is not a reason to carry , i can carry in car only if you have reason so camping -bush craft or fishing, officer but i keep all me gear -( bug out )in boot so i got proof im going out. but as a lic gun holder they normally pre occupied over the gun in boot then my knives
I bought one of these knives about a month ago and I sent it back because it was simply terrible. Glad you had better luck man. This knife completely ruined Bucks for me.
It has (mine at least) not adequate detent ball tension, poor quality screws, small and slippery flipper, slight recurve on the blade (sharpening problems for noobies), uneven grind on both sides of cutting edge and blade which is not centered. But I still love it! :)
I've had my vantage for a little over a year now and I love it. It's been used to cut everything from sushi to roof shingles. Looks beat up as all heck, but I think it just makes the knife look better.

woohoo good to see a review on this knife. thanks for everything you've done Jeff, I really appreciate it...
The Buck Vantage line of knives are fantastic! I love their S30V Pro models...
I own a vantage pro with S30V - I personally think its a great knife if you are looking for a knife with that steel. You'll be hard pressed to find anything like it within the same price range.

cm and grams? How nice of you. Literally the whole world already uses metric system so it's nice of you to make this gesture to the rest of us. ;)
yes definatly feels more solid also offers more cutting edge

Nice review Jeff. Your place looks great too very tasteful. Having some solid furniture under you makes all the difference imo.
haha love the fish name, and your house is beautiful jeff. I've always loved the natural wood furnishing and all that.
Very nice table and a very nice room as well.
I am going to see if sportsmens whale house and or big 5 sports have this knife tomorow.
Excellent review.

Great review and a great knife. I have that model and it's hard to put down!
Great review. I ordered the Buck 341 from there factory 🏭 today. 2022. $63.00 US. Hope you still like your table.
My dad is a Komatsu mechanic and he graduated a one week class and as a gift, everybody got a Buck knife idk what model but on the blade is etched "Komatsu Technition" and h gave me the knife. It is a really nice knife!
Just convinced my friends to get a buck! Not this exact one, but still. Good knives! Awesome review :D
Jeff, what are your views on the Buck 110? I use it for hunting and fishing and I think it's amazing. Just asking your opinion

wow, that does look good! And to have you (someone who's opinion I respect concerning knives) say it's better than a tenacious.. I must have one!
Last night I found out that you can use the blade hole as a thumb stud to flip iyt open fast, thought you would like to know
perhaps kabar such as the USMC is also up there with most known to non knife people
I didnt mean to say over seas, but I mean there is no consitancy in the entire line some love theirs some hate them, the QC isnt good, the knife is
Are we going to see the Boker S2 review any time soon?
I disslike S30V for a beater but do like it for a regular EDC, best S30V deal ever use to be the S30V Native at walmart for $25...those days are gone, lol...
Agreed on blade centering and Buck's 420hc. Good take on this knife!
I actually got a autographed one a few years back from some convention. It's held up well in the past but sadly recently it's been lacking, if you could give me some advice of getting that edge back I would really appreciate it!

+TGL7238 Exactly correct! Mine has broken in perfectly.
TGL7238 that's what happened to mine which makes it harder to flip
Prefer this over Ontario RAT-1 or Kershaw Skyline? Just wondering...
Great review of a classic knife .....Thanks
I have a question for ya brother, are bucks cheaper knives like this one also bos heat treated or are they done elsewhere because I was looking at these and it did not say so I never ended up pulling the trigger on it?!?!?

Thanks for the centimeter facts, I'm watching from Switzerland and got the Vantage Force Avid!
I think the black wood handles look really nice on the middle level think it is designated avid

Hi cutlerylover , I'm new and loved the video , you were really respectful , and polite ! thumbs up for me
So its 2016
Fav( 2-3) sub 100$ knife, 3-4 inch blade with VG10 or better?
pref S30v or XHP
So far this and Skyline is my pick. want to buy ASAP.
**Do u know if this buck fits into a Gen 1 work sharp belt system?
Got the large/normal sized one at smokey mountain knife works yesterday. Love it so far... Can shave with factory edge
is the kershaw tremor a good buy? is it fast and reliable?
buck vantage select or spyderco ambitious ?
Oh dang, Jeff. You just did it... again.
You made me want a knife I didn't have on my radar. :) Not that this is a bad thing, but You just manage to make me want this knife so bad.
Also, you saying it is better than the Tenacious (which I simply love) is a challenge I will accept. :)

Keep it up, man.
Late to the party. It seems the newer Buck Vantages have plastic bushings rather than bronze bushings. Is that a deal breaker for you?
my neighbors are ready for anything now...Hey honey whats that guy next door doing today...? Hmmmm well looks to me hes talking about his penis to himself on the front lawn, ooooooooohh nice tan hes got
Those Kobalt prec. screwdrivers are amazing for knife work!
S30V is not a great beater steel at all, its much more brittle and will chip easier when pressures are applied, some poeple tend to think more expensive steels means better, it doesnt it means different
I totally 100% agree about the flipper, does not give you enough purchase at all, that is my only critique.
sorry i know this is an old video but i heard this has a double liner lock do u know what that means? also, what knife for about £40 would you recommend? lock knife, similar thing to the vantage in size
I carry a buck 110. But im tired of the weight. I wish the Vantage had a pocket clip, I really like the 420 HC. But, I think im going to have to go with the spyderco.

The background looks really good jeff
Got my Buck Iceman the other day, good knife so far, thinking of getting the vantage or bantam next.
agree with the flipper needing to be larger. The centering isnt bad on mine. The edge grind though from the factory was HORRIBLE. For the money though I great knife.
can you review some older classic "classy" knives?
Jeff what knife can you recommend for lefties?
I like your house! Hope it's not haunted... Cool table as well, noticed it before you mentioned it, and I'm not a table-guy either! lol
so just another knife i cant import to australia because of it been able to flick open by gravity
only way around it is to have it in kit form then reassemble then its legal to use
but not carry
What's the deal with this house? Did you buy it or are you renting it? It's EXTREMELY nice!
this or the utilitac? Please reply I'm in the market and im torn between these two knives.
Do you like this better than the Kershaw Skyline?
It's one of the best knives you'll get for under $30. I'd love to see a Cutlery Lover review of it, though
do you like the grateful dead???
Does anyone know if they still make the Vantage Pro (small)? I can't find it anywhere.
Got the BOS s30v version (model 347) on Amazon for $60 It's down to about $45 now. I got a second one later, I'll have a spare if I wear this one out. It's my EDC and I don't feel any need to look for anything else. I will anyway lol.

a smith's tri hone sharpener... i love mine and it sharpens really well
btw; thanks for the weight in Gramms and the length in centimeters! really appreciate it!
your videos are awesom keep it up!!!
My friend was able to set the blade in the centre by tightening screws a bit.
is it going to be part of ur EDC?
hey jeff i have a good video idea, i dont think you went over differnt shotgun chokes
Nice looking table!
yes
I always thought the tenacious and the RAT1 to be the most talked about knife
They have a Vantage Pro that's around $60 - S30V blade.
nar all good there
as a kit it passes customs test of flip ability
big crack down - cose they have no standard test so you don't know if it open on 1st go or 10th hard try
so all folding knives now i ask for then to disasemble b4 they ship to me
is it better than a buck 110?

Great review! Talk about your chess set! I love playing chess so much fun!
i thought they use the paper stone on these for the handle scales
is this knife better than the byrd cara cara 2?
and i go fixed blades now most time cose we cant carry any knife at all and self defence is not a reason to carry , i can carry in car only if you have reason so camping -bush craft or fishing, officer but i keep all me gear -( bug out )in boot so i got proof im going out. but as a lic gun holder they normally pre occupied over the gun in boot then my knives
I bought one of these knives about a month ago and I sent it back because it was simply terrible. Glad you had better luck man. This knife completely ruined Bucks for me.
what a beautiful knife
my cousin brought this out on his mothers wedding party and started playing bishop
I miss my vantage select! I gave it away to someone who lost their pocket knife. But I regret it every now and then.
Thanks for the centimeters specs!
no thosewere a different run of knives. the normal scelect vantage knives used FRN
It has (mine at least) not adequate detent ball tension, poor quality screws, small and slippery flipper, slight recurve on the blade (sharpening problems for noobies), uneven grind on both sides of cutting edge and blade which is not centered. But I still love it! :)
Oh wow, how much do you make to have such a nice house? i remember you say that you dont make much.
That there's a mighty fine table Jeffrey
Lisp is getting better :)
Love this channel!
