Thanks Brian! Will probably redo the raised beds because my husband didn't like the way my son did it 🤣, will see if he is willing to do it on his own. My zucchini gave me a small one so far. The garden didn't do so well and I am not happy with the heat and humidity and on top of that I am hurting so the garden had to do it on it's own, my son watered and harvested. I really have to get going in the spring and need to place drip irrigation because I don't want to be outside during the summer. So depressing not to be able to garden. In Georgia we don't have much of a spring, we get nice weather in January, February and when everything is in bloom a freeze comes and kills it. We can't plant until the end of April and in May it gets so hot already is done with spring in 2 weeks if not sooner ☹️ Have a blessed day 🤗💞

I'm in Sweden. Due to a couple of late hard frosts, I wasn't able to get my starts into the ground when I would have wanted to. Instead, I had to replant quite a few of my seeds/starts, as the ones I had, were leggy beyond survival. So, I've still yet to be able to harvest any of my zucchini's or any of my early beets, carrots etc. I opted not to plant that many tomato plants this year and the ones I did plant as soon as it was "safe", I had bought from the store and were tall, thick and strong. I did have tomato starts (that I've planted but, they won't have time to produce anything) but, they were still very small compared to the store bought ones, since I had to replant most of those too. Yes, I could have transplanted them into bigger pots, in wait for being able to plant them outdoors but, I really don't have that many larger pots or the space to put them indoors, since I have cats and also had a litter of kittens. All of which love to go crazy with my starts... LOL Will be buying a large glass cabinet at the second hand store, where I can "lock" my starters away and put grow lights in them for next year.
Last week I did top off all of my tomato plants, remove all the lower branches, and quite a few of the ones higher up, removed all the flowers and the tiny tomatoes that won't have a chance to ripen. Only have at most about 2 months left before it's way to cold for tomatoes to ripen.
I harvested a third of my one potato beds 5X14 ft. yesterday. That bed I made last yr. using the Ruth Stout(sp?) method. Didn't get much of a harvest last yr. but that was expected, since they don't seem to produce much the first yr. This yr. was different. Just harvesting barely one third of the bed resulted in over 40lbs. of potatoes. I was worried that most would have rotten or, been eaten by whatever lives in the dirt, due to it constantly being wet since it's covered in a thick layer of straw but, I only found 2 potatoes that had been munched on!
I did however have to dig up the whole one third of the bed I harvested from, due to me planting the seed potatoes to deep and also that when digging, I found that the soil was completely root bound and was very hard packed. Oh well... Now, it's fluffy again... LOL I will be going out to harvest another round this afternoon, if it doesn't rain. Once I've cleared out the whole bed and prepped it, I'll be planting my winter greens, starts and seeds, along with full length rows of carrots, spinach, lettuce etc. Come later this fall, I'll be planting most likely the whole bed with hard neck garlic. First time I'll be doing that so, it will be interesting to see if it works.
I will also be starting a new Ruth Stout potato bed this fall. Not planting in it until next spring. Only laying down the thick layer of cardboard along with a layer of soil on my moss and weed "lawn". (I live in semi forest conditions) Love the fact that I rarely if ever need to mow the lawn, since it is mostly soft green moss... A pain in the rear though when you try to dig and you have giant pine tree and other tree roots growing everywhere you try to dig so, the Ruth Stout method and raised beds are what works best out here.

Carrots... I don't have shavings, but use straw. I planted shallow rows of carrots in my raised metal bed and covered them with styrofoam strips, which I secured down with landscape staples. Worked great! I have seen others use a board across the row, just check daily for sprouting. This fall planting I plan to use narrow board strips cut to size.

Hi Brian! Like you, I have also lived in California in the same area my whole life. San Diego is 9B/10A. I also live in 9B/10A. In one of your videos you said that many of your perennials are now annuals. I have multiple perennials in my garden that are also annuals. I just didn't know that there was a term for it until I watched one of your videos.
I live in San Jose, which is ironically, also in the top ten most populated cities in California, let alone the U.S.!
But none of that has anything to do with why I chose you as the only gardener I now follow on youtube. I chose you to watch on a daily basis because you stood out from all the rest. You treat every aspect of gardening down to the point of alchemy! From how you stake tomatoes in the most particular way, to just about everything/anything else I see in your videos, I learn something new. You CAN teach an old dog new tricks, LOL!

Your three sentence reply speaks volumes! I can tell so much about you just by those 3 sentences. The most bizarre thing is that you could potentially be the exact same age as me.
I've lived in California my whole life. I was born in the 50s in Santa Rosa. In 1973 I moved with my family to Los Gatos in the Santa Cruz mountains. My first apartment after my high school graduation was in Campbell. Then I moved to a house in San Jose.
What I'm trying to say is that we both lived in the San Jose 1973. We were both experiencing San Jose at the same time. What are the odds of that happening?? One in a billion?

It's not fit to plant anything right now in Texas 100 plus degree days and no rain for the last 48 days and none in the forecast. Today 105, and the next 15 days are all forecast to be over 100. I'm over it. lol

110 here today in N Central Texas. We'll go down to 102 by the end of the month. That's when I plan to start some seeds for fall and winter. I've heard we are going to have extreme cold this winter so I'm not planting a lot and what I plant I want to be able to bring indoors if needed. So everything in containers,

I am in central Texas and have some starts going: cucumber, tomatoes, and brussel sprouts. Brussel sprouts grow really slowly so I started them a couple weeks ago to get them to a good size for when the weather cools down. I won't start quicker brassicas until September, though. I'm nearly to the point of transplanting in my cucumber. The tomatoes need a couple more weeks, at least.

@@loverlyredhead Everything in my garden is burning up from the hot. I normally plant a fall garden, but I'm on the fence about it this year. Supposed to be a cold winter. And the last 2 winters I've lost nearly all of my brassicas and carrots. I may just turn the goats into the garden when my okra is done.

@@BroqueCowgirlHomestead mine look fine thanks to water and shade cloth, but most everything is not producing. My Armenian cucumbers are doing great and have earned a spot in all future gardens. My okra just started blooming again after a few weeks break. Same with my squash and zucchini. I think day length made the difference. I've got my frost cloth ready to switch in as needed if the farmer's almanac prediction is right.

@@loverlyredhead I grew Armenian Cucumbers last year. They produced well. But I'm not a fan of how they taste made into pickles. love them as fresh cucumbers tho. My garden is 40x40 there is no way I could shade cloth the whole area. This is just the time of year in Texas that the gardens suffer. I try to get everything in, and done by the end of June. Then take a break during the heat, and prepare for fall gardening.

The main pest for us in zone 10 is garden lizards. They are cute little creatures but the love garden plants! I am working hard to keep them at bay with tiny gauge wire, and cloth netting. It's really hot here in the summers but we also have a rainy season going on, so it sorta evens out.

I'm in zone 10 like you and Brian. Just when I think there can't be anything else more specific about zone 10 I see your comment. I've seen a million lizards in my life in zone 10, but it never occcurred to me that lizards would be a nuisance in a garden. I'm in San Jose, Brian is in San Diego. There is no rainy season in California, I know this because I've lived here my whole life. Now I'm curious- where are you?
