    I'm disappointed there was no mention of the glorious Coconut Chicken, one of the native dishes of Shenzhen. It's basically a hotpot with a 'soup' base of lightly salted coconut water, throw in pieces of fresh, free-range chicken, and it tastes absolutely amazing.
    I personally love the food in China, and am a huge fan of nose-to-tail dining, much of which can no longer be found in Singapore where I'm from.
    The only thing I hate about Chinese food is the dubious food safety. It's not just that most places aren't very hygienic - China is the only place where street hawkers dredge up oil from the gutter to cook in... and serve it to their own people. Mind-boggling disregard of human life & health for profit.

    I don"t know in the US but wet markets like this are a pretty common thing in many other more developed countries. In Europe it"s normal especially in countries where food is a big deal like Italy. I myself am from Italy and my family, like many other, buys meat, fish and vegetables mostly at wet markets that resemble the Chinese ones. Just the hygienic conditions are better.

      Funny I'm seeing alot of comments from recently saying this is why the start of Coronavirus happened in China. I don't think so. The food is still cooked the same. Americans just process the hell out of it first making it very unhealthy. Processing food and freezing it doesn't kill diseases.

    • @dwightsmith4641
      @dwightsmith4641 4 роки тому +1

      I am not 100% convinced that wet markets caused the Kung Flu. It might be a weaponized version of SARS from a laboratory in Wuhan. It gets rid of old people and unhealthy people so you have young people free to work when they were taking care of their old parents at home. It also causes problems for other countries who are starting to clamp down on Chinese trade imbalances. Now we are seeing Chinese Hornets in the US which are a killer variety. CCP is a very sinister organization.

    • @smking100
      @smking100 4 роки тому +1

      @@dwightsmith4641 I don't think any of us believe the wet markets are the source any more. Virologist Dr. Judy Mitkovits in her Plandemic video says that naturally occurring mutations like COVID would take 80 or more years. No, this is definitely lab created, or 'lab enabled' as she put it. To get the degree of mutation we've seen in this HxNx variant, those mutations had to be nudged along.

      I also think rice is great and I eat it on a regular basis, but since I have a chinese girlfriend and since I know the way she likes to prepare her rice I absolutely agree with Winston and C-Milk.
      It's too soft, sticky, and absolutely flavorless. In the west we always add some salt or cook it with an onion inside and then eat it with sauces and meat, or we make risottos, but in China they just make it plain and it's awful if you eat it like that. But still, okay if you combine it with other dishes :).

When he asked the interpreter the guy said slyly "ah, dog keep you warm in winter," and he thought at the moment that that meant they kept them indoors as pets; but he realized later that the guy was cheekily referring to their common use as food in the winter season.

    I want to comment on the maintenance part. It probably has less to do with culture and more to do with the social economic status of individuals and cities. when the resources and productivities are limited, there lack a reason to spend on maintenance of transitional products when a more economic option is to save up to buy the relatively final products. This argument is especially true when you put first tier cities and countrysides in comparison. During rapid development, why would anyone put the effort in maintaining a building that will only last for a decade or less?
    However, there is a cultural reference that can be applied here which is an old saying called, "衣不如新,人不如旧“. Which means news clothes are always better than old clothes while old friends are always more trustworthy than new friends. But even with this reference, my argument still works if we were to think cloth as transitional products and people or friends as relatively permanent or finalized "products".

    While I was listening to the narration on hot chi and cold chi, I was struck with the concept of "saath-wick" (vegeratarian food cooked in a simple way with generally less oil, like cold chi) and "tam-shik" foods ( meat, strong flavor, etc like hot chi) in ancient Indian food philosophy. Again..couldn't stop mentioning the awesome audio between your bikes

    As a chinese, I think you guys got the idea of chi wrong in relation to food. Chi in body has nothing to do with the chi in food you guys are talking about. When we talk about "hot" or "cold" in food, we are merely talking about what is more likely to give you high blood pressure, indigestion or heart burn etc etc ("hot" food are more likely to cause those" and "cold" food might counter the effect of those.) But I don't think any one I know mix the chi in body with chi in food.

    Hi ADVChina,
    For most other videos, I find myself defending the two content creators from onslaughts of comments by Chinese people who felt hurt by the "negative criticism" in the videos. That is because I think the videos are based on facts and criticisms are constructive. But this video? It's nothing like other videos -- ranting off biased personal dislikes without respect to local culture. Rice is horrible. Fresh is not good. What if someone say potato is tasteless and horrible. If you say, no potato is not tasteless, then it's the same for Chinese who eat rice, rice is not tasteless for them.
    Thumbs down.

    Interesting video! A lot of the "weird" foods you mentioned have been part of my childhood diet somewhere in southern Europe, we have a lot of dishes made from different organs including brain, blood etc. but their presentation is usually less revolting / explicit than the Chinese one :) The only things we usually discarded were chicken heads and feet (not the lamb or pig ones though). However we have the tendency of eating more veggie dishes than meat ones, unlike the Chinese, because we also have folk beliefs that certain types of food (like cured meats / sausages / bacon) may cause pimples and other health issues, while other things (especially veggies) will be good for you and will lead to a longer life.

    In America we also get bowls or cartons of regular steamed white rice with every meal. I thought it was assumed you would eat the white rice with your main meal, since the rice sticks to whatever you're eating. You say they leave the bones in the meat, but that's how most people get their meat in the USA. It must be different in South Africa. Maybe you are just spoiled. Haha. We definitely do not show cute pictures of the animals we're going to be eating, usually.

      Yep, same thing even in India (technically it is also in Asia so yeah).We also don't just eat plain rice or the dishes like meat and veggies by themselves. First, love the footage going through the small towns. I lived in a couple of those and it brings back wonderful memories (memory being very selective here).
    I lived in small town in the center of China, a few hours from Xi'an by bus. The food was great. You guys didn't mention jao zi (my pinying may be way off, since I've lived in Thailand and Cambodia since and learned a couple more languages, thus get confuses): a.k.a. dumplings. Those were good. I had "mian pi" in the mornings, which was noodles with sprouts and spices. You could get it hot or cold.
    The menus in the bigger restaurants, which were still cheap, were encyclopedic. Over time we learned the better options, and also find Western counterparts. One favorite was french fries with chili peppers in it. You could get beef and potatoes. Spinach and garlic. Of course you could get fried chicken. There was a dish that was a bridge made of ribs.
    Hot Pot was everywhere. You could get Beijing Duck, dirt cheap.
    We had Muslim BBQ, and the bread was great, and the fried zucchini.
    Everything was good as long as you stayed away from NEW, for you, meat options.
    I loved the food. Leaders not so much. Bosses not at all. Restrooms were the stuff of nightmares. The pollution at times apocalyptic.

    Good job! You actually made it through 20 minutes with nothing worse than school-girl squeamishness about yucky food; but then the usual ignorant judgmental rant begins. The people of China, you claim, don't "feel a need" to maintain things. They don't have the feelings of a superior person such as yourself. Yes, that must explain it. Why do you have to go to that place in every video?
    I have seen that characteristic in every expat that spends all of his free time with other expats. The condition always gets worse over time, never better. The great opportunity in living in another culture is getting beyond those easy moralistic views of every difference you see. I love those buildings with the rust stains. Inside of them are wonderful people making beautiful lives in difficult circumstances.

    • @stonetrouble5053
      @stonetrouble5053 7 років тому

      I do not say anyone has no right to criticize "a country." Serpent ZA sees rust stains on a building and decides: they don't feel a need to maintain things. He applies this judgement to all the people of China. He sees rust stains and his immediate conclusion is that this is a racial characteristic. I disagree with this conclusion in particular and Serpent ZA's consistent racial view of the world in general.

    • @AllHaiLKINGTIsHeRe3

      Lol. If the people of the country have the ability to maintain a building, and they don't maintain it, that means that they don't feel the need to maintain it. It's simply a logical conclusion. Coming to this conclusion doesn't require any assumptions, nor does it require your beloved "racism." They also never made _any_ racial statements in this whole video. They're talking about the current culture in the country of China, which has nothing to do with race. I'm not sure if you really don't understand the distinction, or if you're just dishonestly ignoring it so that you can continue to feel virtuous by fighting nonexistent racism.

    Good job guys. Don't get discouraged or swayed by the political correctness. These were your personal experience and impressions. You are not obligated to be politically correct. Just speak your mind. On the subject of Chinese food and their medicinal characteristics, it is all rooted in ancient wisdom of trying to explain the relationship between nature, energy and man. The overly simplistic representation of hot and cold serves the purpose of easy guidance for common folks of the time to better protect their mind and body through some simple rules. One piece of advice though, please refrain from judgement when describing one's culture, especially the practices that you may not understand the full reason behind it. You can speak your mind, but there's nothing wrong if you just leave it as simple impression. You don't have to have an explanation for everything you see. After all, life is too mysterious for anyone to claim full knowledge of it.

    great video. I like the way you do your video talk while driving. Very new... I would like to see though you guys going to restaurant and order dishes and talk about the things you like and dont like i suppose. I however have one comment that i like to say is about what you commented on the "man tou" the plain steam bun, "zhou" congee(plain congee in reference to) and Cantonese cuisine in general. If you have lived in Canton area long enough(sounds like you have kind of), you should know that Cantonese cuisine is generally very mild taste because itself focus on the actual taste of the food such as fish taste, chicken taste etc. Thats why many dishes dont use many over powering seasoning like those from XiChuan cuisine. Congee in Canton even other part of China are very common breakfast for the reason of the rice, it is similar to porridge and it is good for you. Plain congee(with nothing but mushy rice) is also kind of good for the fact that it is "cleansing", which in Western view you probably wouldnt never understand. Thats why when you are sick and have no appetite, this will fill you up and will cleanse you internally. Man Tou though is used to accompany with other food that is bit more taste and often has some sauce(stir fry dishes), or to just balance out other dishes when the majority of dishes are heavy taste. Thats goes to what you mentioned on Ying and Yang, the balance of the food not everything have to heavy taste side.

The foreigners who only say good words to China, they either have not stayed in China for a long time or just try to pleased the Chinese and not very sincere. These two people can live in China for so long time they truly love China and want her to be better. They are honest people. A lot of Chinese are just insensitive about their environment and they are used to live in such a life.

      I absolutely agree with this Chinese respondent. All these videos have a NEGATIVE overtone and an overtly patronizing attitude towards the ways of the Chinese. • @RadoDani

      I disagree. There is a lot of honesty in these videos, and you have to keep in mind that this is how westerners view China. The videos are not about negative vs. positives, but rather what is fascinating to a westerner. When it comes to food, personal and acquired tastes play big roles. My Canadian friends, for example, dislike or have hard time appreciating some of my Eastern European dishes or even simple stuff like fermented milk..
