    big Kodak ISO 100 expired slide film here. i love the colours and look to it when shot at box speed and cross processed. not so much if developed in E-6 as the color shifts are too off. and no need to over or underexpose it. lots of photographers dismiss this whole thing of x-pro as hipster bs but i tell you, it's a fantastic memory maker for a sunny summer holiday

    An important thing to note with Agfa Vista is that the name was used for three completely different lines of film over the years. The original Agfa Vista (in 100, 200, 400, and 800 ISO varieties) was made by, well, Agfa. You can distinguish it by the original rhombus Agfa logo and "made in Germany" description. Once Agfa stopped making film another company bought the naming rights and sold repackaged film made by others, all named "AgfaPhoto". At first there was AgfaPhoto Vista (200, 400, and 800) - made by Ferrania and it's labeled as "made in EU". It was either based on, or outright repackaged, their Solaris range. Once Ferrania closed down as well there was the final Vista, the one most people nowadays are familiar with - AgfaPhoto Vista Plus (200 and 400). That one was made by Fujifilm which is no secret, but the actual stock is disputed. Some sources say it's just repackaged Fujicolor 200 and Superia 400, others swear that it's different. But anyway, now that it's only available second hand in various stages of expiration you should know which one you're getting - it's not hard to tell them apart, you just have to pay attention to the exact branding and place of origin and it's all clear. Hope this long post helps someone :)

    I have shot Kodachrome and Panatomic X. My go to B&W film was Verichrome Pan at 125. I used Tri X if I needed a faster speed, although 400 is not that impressive these days. My days were back in the early ‘70’s.

    I certainly lament the passing of some of these...
    Kodachrome for sure. I shot almost exclusively Kodachrome when I shot color for many years K64 the most... K25 when I knew I was shooting in sunlight and... I was one of the VERY FEW people that LOVED PKL (K200) which was a magical film for me, most people when they shot "high speed" color went with E6 because very quickly the E6 200 and even 400 films showed "less grain" in 35, had quick turn-around at labs, and more than anything else could be pushed a stop and still look okay. K200 was 200 and that's it, very very grainy on 35mm but had that Kodachrome look (warm colors were warm but other colors seemed cool/desaturated which made Kodachrome reds pop like nothing else (even if technically they might be less saturated than some E6 films) they LOOKED so great. Also Kodachrome as you were trying to describe were pretty much black and white film before you processed it, no dyes at all (let alone couplers) meaning it tended to be fairly indestructible in terms of keeping and storage without babying it so a LOT of consistency. I LOVED K200's look. If you want to see it go look for grainy looking Kodachrome pictures in 80's in NatGeo.
    Panatomic-X was fantastic absolutely in all formats. Interestingly I do believe somehow it was used as the negative base in Polaroid Type 55 with whatever Poloaroid magic one-shot developer was built in to the packs and was effectively much higher speed with higher contrast in that film. Magical if you've never shot Type 55. I loved that shit on 8x10 cameras but even back when it was made it was a very pricey thing in 8x10.

    I've been shooting film since the early 1970s and have been lucky enough to have used K25, K64, K200 extensively whilst it was regular stock. My favourite was K64 - mainly for the colours (not that true-to-life but very pleasing to my eye). I've also used Pan-X but never really got on with it. - preferring FP4 (but I did get to shoot some expired FP3). No way would (or could) I spend £100 on a roll of expired film - but it's good to see the resurgence in film usage and even the appearance of new film stocks.

    Panatomic-X was my favorite B&W film. And its end of the line the reason I don't like Tmax... a good and more "capable" film than Panatomic-X, but a sterile one, with no charm, personality. When I discovered it was about to end, I bought what I could find (not that many, unfortunately) and threw it into the freezer. Three weeks ago I shot one on a portrait session with my daughter, just to check it, Shot on ASA 32, with no exposure compensation and developed on Dektol 1:1 for 6 minutes, it delivered nice tones, not that much contrast, and the kind of grain I love, discreet but present if you look for it. I didn't had time to print it yet, but I believe it'll do fine too.
    Thanks for this video, it brought me nice memories. Best!

    Verichrome Pan was good - worked well with tanning and staining developers. Thick base and lots of silver. I did shoot some Panatomic X in the 90s having got a few outdated rolls from a neighbour how had had them in the dee freeze for some yrs. Discontinued in the 80s. Pan X plus was nice, I liked it in PMK and some of Barry Thornton's catechol based developers. What about that old Kodak IR film High Speed IR - notionally a 400. Proper IR effects, not like the Ilford one. That was much mourned. Ones I particularly miss are Neopan 400, 1600 and SS. The first 2 went well in Barry Thornton's DiXactol and some other one I cannot remember (catechol based - you can get remakes of them from the Photographer's Formulary in Montana).
    For those missing retro looking Kodak B&W films, I wonder if it might be worth you trying Kodak Double X. It's a movie film (Schindler's List etc) and quite contrasty - you need to control your lighting ratios in with this one (or accept you are going to say goodbye to some of the exposure range). There a re a number of places re-spooling it into 135 cassettes. Nik & Trick in the UK do it.
    Has anyone done a comparison of Adox Color Implosion and Lomography Metropolis (which looks a bit like bleach bypass)?

    Ps. you missed a few REALLY big deals here, I won't even include all the recent Fuji discontinuations which matter a lot to people TODAY rather than 2+ decades ago.
    1. Plus-X... you won't hear a lot about it but this film was pretty much my standard go-to B+W film since the 70's when I started taking photography seriously. It was absolutely perfect for my people oriented photography and it had a lot of characteristics that I've never found a decent substitute for. FP4+ was and is a completely different beast with a very different tonal response curve no matter how you develop it.
    2. TXP... (Tri-X Professional 320), never in 35mm but all other sizes like all sheet sizes, 120... another unique film that had a very odd (relative to most film available since the 70's) in it's tonal response curve. Was NOT a good film for casual shooters at all but very difficult to reproduce tonal curve for those that had explored it's exposure and development characteristics fully.
    3. Verichrome Pan = what I consider the last of the really old-school black and white films from a tonal response perspective (TXP was also old-school but different)
    4. Agfa APX25 and APX100 both of these films shared a family resemblance but when developed in Rodinal (or similar developer) had a very distinctive carved out of metal look.

    About not having DX coding in point and shoot camera defaulting to 100 in non DX coded film cassette .. you can in fact adjust the ISO/ASA by setting your exposure compensation .. +1 in a 100 ASA is 200 and +2 is 400 and +3 is 800 ASA equivalent .. ...

      Agfa Ultra! Those Aquamarine skies... Martin Parr's film. I have some Agfa 25 somewhere waiting for a bright day. Quite similar to tech pan - a bit less contrasty.

  • @Evinyme
    @Evinyme 2 роки тому

    My information could be wrong so please correct me if need be, but from what I could find, Rollei RPX 25 is the old Agfa APX (discontinued in 2006) which is a finer grain version of Kodak Panatomic-X. APX - Advanced Panatomic-X. Similar to Rollei ATP which is Advanced Technical Pan. I will try to track back down my sources.

    I've got one roll of Adox Color Implosion in the fridge! and I spent something about 10 dollars at that moment. The curious fact that I could never find information is that once I removed the paper that covers the chassis and it was one from Cinestill 50D. So weird!

    oh to shoot to be able to shoot kodachrome 😔

    • @randallstewart175
      @randallstewart175 3 роки тому +1

      Why? Clearly you never shot Kodachrome. By current standards it was slow (ISO 25 or 64; the 200 film never performed that well and was killed off quickly). It was very high contrast, making exposure critical, well beyond the sloppy standards of what passes today. It had very high saturation, a "good", but it's color fidelity was inferior to later and current Ektachrome. In the US, Kodachrome was mostly processed for the masses in one of several labs operated by Kodak; the dirt and scratches they would inflict would not pass today. You're imagining a film which has never existed. (Yes, I shot Kodachorme 10, 25 and 64 as they came along. K-25 was the good one. I switched to Ektachrome 64 when the improved E-4 process and film came out around 1962, and I never went back.)
