9:00 this is one of the best photos I've ever seen. If not for his reflection it could be easily mistaken for an oil painting. ❤️
The compression is really interesting in this one, 150 mm makes a lot of sense for this effect, as you mentioned, compared to an oil painting.
@@jfsfilms9224 im speechless when I see this. As a young photographer, I aspire to have my images evoke the same feeling, that they feel like a painting. I wish I had that type of film and knew how to use it in the darkroom. Remarkable.
I’ve seen this photo many dozens of times over the years. Never saw his reflection though, thanks for pointing that out! Amazing I’d never even noticed it before, I think the imagery and painterly like quality always struck me in this one. Thanks for reminding me to explore the entire frame!
but not one oil paintings is like another
@@krosfyah4932 you are right, it should be approached with an open mind
Subscribed a couple of days ago and what does this legend do? She makes a super thoughtful video about my favourite photographer!
What a legend! I mean Saul Leiter not me ;)
He was a genius. I've only recently discovered his work. I work as a press photographer and his work is giving me some serious inspiration
Glad, thanks for watching!
One of my all time favourites! Love the way you delve into his work
Thank you Madison!
When I look back at the street photos I've taken over the years, the ones I like the most are the ones where I used the camera as a paint brush, where there is a strong personal interpretation than capturing the scene literally. This does not always appeal to the audience, but the most gratifying to myself. Saul Leiter does it so well, and he is good at enjoying the solitude as a creative person. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for introducing this brilliant man to me. I’m a street photographer in Australia and now I want to cry, for why haven’t I been seeing the world as he saw it...?
Take inspiration, but present to the world things as you see them. Who knows in 50 years your work may be discussed on UA-cam
Its hard in 'straya, we don't really have proper seasons unless you live in Southern Vic or Tassie.......very hard to do snow when you live in Darwin or Queensland 🤣
Possibly one of the most educational, insightful and thoughtful videos I've seen about street photography process, and what a topic/mentor to talk about. Your grasp of the details of Saul Leiter's process is awesome, and your and his photos are amazing. I wish I lived somewhere we had seasons ( 4 seasons rather than just wet and dry !) to be able to take half of these photos. I commend your thoughtful and educated approach to using Saul's style to inspire your own process. There are very few photo videos that actually dissect the process, thinking and nuanced approach of our inspirations in such detail and with such understanding. A really great video, thanks so much for taking the time to make it and share it with those of us struggling to better our craft in street work.
Excellent discussion by you. Thank you so much. RS. Canada
You mentioned in a previous video that you were going to up your commitment to the channel and it really shows in the production values here. Strong work all around. As usual, looking forward to your next offering.
Thank you James 🤍
Very interesting! I admire his work and he is a great source of inspiration.
He's definitely one of my favorites. His work is sooooo inspiring.

My first introduction to Saul Leiter. Love what I saw. Thanks for sharing. ✌️
Thank you for watching! Appreciate it ✌🏻
Thank you for introducing me of the work of Leiter, what a uniqe style he had, love it.
Nice! Leiter is one of those photographers you instantly recognize. He really has that "look".
Absolutely Edward!
Leiter's work is such a delight. Thank you for your wonderful video and commentary. I'm now that much more inspired to get out there, observe and shoot 📷✨
That's the spirit! ✨
Really enjoyed that! Now I'm looking forward to exploring the rest of your films
Saul Leiter 😍 One of the photographers who shows that it doesn't matter what other people think of you. You should go his way on when it is not "in fashion". thank you for this video 👍
You’re very welcome, I hope I could also transport that message with this video because at the end of the day it’s true.
Fantastic presentation. The music really sets it up nicely. Great review of my favorite photographer who is still unknown to many and I've always thought he was right up there with the best of the best. He just never promoted himself which is admirable. I also, loved the documentary about him, "In No Great Hurry".
Thank you Catherine he is one of my favourites too and a great inspiration for sure. Thank you for watching!
I can tell by the other comments I'm not alone in having an unhealthy love of Saul Leiter’s work. Great job on the video.
Thank you Dan! :)
Saul Leiter is a huge discovery to me, I feel like I met a visual soulmate. I can't thank you enough for this video. I’m addicted to your channel now 🥰
Cheers for watching! Glad you met him and it meant a lot to you!
This was so great! So glad to find your channel!
Great video as always! I visited an exhibition of Saul Leiter about two years ago and I was really fascinated by his work & himself.
Thank you for this deep and inspiring introduction!
Goosebumps with this one. I was reluctant to watch it too soon - I wanted to save this one, because I admire Leiter's work so much. He's perhaps my favourite. And then in the few seconds of the intro, you summed it up already. Leiter, more than any other photographer, puts me in that liminal space when viewing his images. Eggleston's image of the everyday things sometime does this also. But Leiter takes us closer to abstraction, but it doesn't feel pretentious, it just feels 'seen'. I look at some of his images, and imagine them as something seen while staring, eyes not quite focused, but 'seeing' perhaps because of that. They capture that more trance-like observation. I love this work so much. Thanks for this insight into his work Tatiana.
SL is my favorite photographer, far ahead of everyone else. So thank you for this beautiful video.
Thank you Bruno!
Another awesome video! I was totally unfamiliar with Saul Leiter. I’m so glad you introduced me to his work. Incredible!
Incredible indeed, thank you Tim!
This was beautiful, thank you! Feeling really inspired now 🙏🏻

Thank you Dave much appreciated!
I just checked out a book of his from my local library.
LOVE your channel. More, please.
I was at the Art Students” League when Richard Pousette-Dart was alive and had an atelier class. It is impossible to overemphasize that place as a living source of American art. Just to walk into those doors can transform an artist forever-the history, the free form craziness. Leiter need have only heard one word out of Posette-Dart’s mouth to change his life and vision. My teacher found Sir Jacob Epstein, the knighted royal sculptor in the League basement hugging the sculpture stand he learned on, still there and maintained after thirty years. Rothko, Theodore Stamos-color field abstractionists are living in the walls. You can see Rothko in many of Leiter’s photographs.
Thank you for sharing his use of 150mm lens
Yes indeed and perhaps I can explore that in a video about Saul Leiter’s painting...
Lovely episode. Thank you.
Thank you so much. I had never heard of Saul Leiter. And to me his photography really resonates with me. I am so glad I was introduced to this great artist. Thank you so much.

You’re very welcome & thank you for the kind words!
Amazing video, thank you. Please do more!!!
Love the feeling of this video , great subject. Music. Perfect.
Thank you so much Alan!
Just discovered you now. So inspiring to listen.. I still have a lot of photographs unedited and unposted and do not enjoy the pressure some people like to have to post it all right on the same day they took it. Photography for me is a pleasure, above all.
Subscribed!
Absolutely, photography can be everything but above all we have to do it because of the fulfilment and pleasure it brings us and we have to do it at our own pace however we feel comfortable. Thank you for watching Ana!
A lovely video on a great artist. Like a lot of his contemporaries he had a ‘painters eye’ for shape, colour and composition. He also had the ability to quietly observe his surroundings which is evident not only in his B&W and Colour photographic prints but also in the other types of artworks he produced over the years.
Absolutely Kev couldn’t agree more I wanted to squeeze in his painting and more about his art but I guess that can be another video where I’ll have the time to approach everything, cheers for watching!
Great work as always !
Loving the inspiration these photographers and your fine self are providing along with the history lesson for those new to the medium. One photographer i credit with my interest in photography and more importantly to me the use of colour, blurred motion, and selected focus was the gr8 Austrian photographer Ernst Haas.Till this very day he still inspires my work
Hey Stephen I also admire Ernst Haas, his colour & composition are really amazing! Thank you!

Great stuff. Thank you!
Thank you for these wise words!
One of the best .... if not the best ...
Saw a small shoe of his work in London.. just brilliant.
Just found and subbed to your channel. Really a great show and you are a very artistic and intelligent host. Can’t wait to start binge watching the show to catch up on what I’ve missed!!! Thanks!!!!!
Hey Terry thank you so much for the kind words really appreciate it! Peace ✌🏻
This was very interesting to see the clear inspiration of Pousette-Dart in Saul Leiter's art.
Very interesting, and you're a very good and calming presenter. I enjoy classic street photography, but having seen so many similar images in the 28-35mm range it's refreshing to see street done with a telephoto. I'm going to charge up my ancient Canon 350D and put one of my ancient manual focus telephoto's on it tomorrow and see what I can come up with. Cheers!
Now that’s cool! Have fun Richard!
wow, wonderfull introduction, voice and comunication, thanks so much!!! Peace!!
Thank you Brian!
I've been really into this type of video from you! Keep it up :). Oh and of course Leiter is an amazing photographer!!
