The amazing thing lyrically in this song is that she references her music from the albums she lost the rights to. Ever line in the chorus references a past album, songs like Superman, Haunted, Don’t Blame Me, State of Grace, etc. it’s incredibly lyrically complex if you know her discography
You might like Haunted, it’s her most metal-esque song. She also has a few amazing live rock style performances that might be more up your alley

I like the Long Pond Session much more with most of the songs she recorded there; more intimate and less synth-y. Plus, she adds at the end “look at how my tears… turn into your tears” which, to me, clears up what she is meaning. Plus, each song has an interview at the beginning that goes into how the song came about -without giving too much away. IMO

Wholly agree with this. Although I do love the production on this song, Long Pond is magical, and I think it's a better first impression for new listeners. I agree as well about the interviews. It's more of her talking about her own process of creating, not necessarily how each song *has* to be interpreted. And her raw emotion while performing this song is palpable.

You should DEFINITELY listen to the live recording of this song from the Long Pond Studio sessions.
I like all the reverb in the album recording and ghostly voices/panning, etc., but the live recording strips a lot of that away and you just hear her voice.
Her lower register in her voice really shimmers and it's quite an emotional performance (both in terms of sadness and in terms of anger), which makes the "simple" vocal much more engaging.
I think there is something in listening to the whole song through once and then only stopping to comment on a second listening. So many songs (of any good songwriter) are a whole arc of a story. It's about the impressions given simultaneously through the music and the lyric. The rhythm and the chord progressions alongside those lyrics too.
Get the entire impression first, then go into the song. I never enjoy a song as much the first time if I follow the lyrics.

...her tears have consequences... her tears turned into his tears she sings at the end... but most importantly, the ricochet (consequences) of her tears lead her to re-record all of her first 6 albums !!!! And changed the music industry thru it !!! It was a HUGE RICOCHET !!!
(Plus then the guy who bought her music lost soooo much money because she re-recorded all of her albums so she could own it)
Your piano playing was gorgeous what an amazing talent !!! Enjoyed you both thank you !! 🙏💗

She sings the line about, “my tears turn into your tears” is in the Long Pond version, where a stripped down version is performed with her producer/co-writer, on piano.

  • @amycope7970
    @amycope7970 10 місяців тому +29

Taylor uses a lot of homonyms and lines with multiple interpretations in her lyrics. The diamonds / stones one you picked up.
I think the tears ricochet line has a few meanings, it partly contributes to visualising the story, as in how forcefully is she crying for them to ricochet, but also as you pointed out, the idea of her pain ricocheting and hitting the other person.....she didn't have it in her to go with grace..... if I'm on fire you'll be ashes too.... i didn't want to have to haunt you but what a ghostly scene. All lines suggesting that ultimately there's no winners here, pain begets pain etc.
She's not afraid to experiment with the sound (there are some random sounds, the percussion in one song is literally a voice note of Taylor saying "ratata ta" that she recorded at 3am when the idea came to her, another song has her and the producer sitting on the floor stomping their feet, her cat meows randomly in another and she loves to throw in a bit of 80s synth)......
but it's no secret that musically her songs don't tend to be terribly complex. I saw, i think it was a music teacher talk about how this has really worked to her advantage in marketing terms as most of her songs are easy for budding musicians to learn. I think that was how this teacher became a fan, just the shear number of students who wanted to learn various TS songs he eventually just submitted to the inevitability of it all 😄
Her discography is so enormous and covers so many different genres, its hard to think of a single song that 'encapsulates' her talent or why she's so massive.
The song that hooked me originally is 'false god' with its jazz hook and sax its just a really sexy sound. I'd only heard her hits before that and i just remember thinking "this? This is Taylor Swift?"
I love the storytelling in 'no body no crime', like that song could be made into a drama / thriller mini series easy.
Lyrically I love 'Ivy', it's basically poetry, I love the introspection and music video (which TS directed) for anti-hero.
Her live performance of 'We are never ever getting back together" on the 1989 tour shows off her stage presence and gives the song a completely different feel and new life (the original is pure bubblegum pop but here she performs it as a full on rock performance and she totally sells it, it could so easily have gone sideways or seemed like a spoof in anyone elses hands).
The intro and ready for it performance from the reputation tour really shows off another side to her and gives a peek into the spectacle that is her stadium tours.
The eras tour movie is still in cinemas at the moment ofcourse and ive seen so so many videos of dads, husband's, friends and boyfriends being dragged along to it and coming out the other side complete converts. 😂
Anyway, appreciate this reaction, you clearly took onboard the feedback offered on your previous TS video. The swiftys wont attack you if you listen to her and decide its just not your vibe, how boring would the world be if we all liked exactly the same thing, they just go a bit nuts if they think you're not giving her a fair go, or are being condescending of it purely because it doesn't relate to your personal viewpoint.

I think you'd enjoy her live so much more than any studio version. If you're going to listen to folklore, it should be the Long Pond sessions so you can experience it live. I would love to see how you feel about Death By a Thousand Cuts from the Lover in Paris concert, as well as Holy Ground (Super Saturday Night), and Don't Blame Me from the Reputation Tour. I think they're great performances that showcase her versatility as a performer.
I hope you keep exploring her catalogue. She switches things up so often, there's something for everyone. You just have to watch/listen to the right things. I hope Swifties have been kind to you. Honestly this song was a grower for me, and I can see why you might find it "boring". Not everyone has to like everything. Glad you could appreciate it lyrically all the same.

I don't know if anyone is going to recommend it, but Seven from this same album is the song I think would most appeal to Judson. It's a track where she's reflecting on her childhood and realizing some of the "normal* things she thought her friends were going through were actually sinister. But as a child, you dont have that context. It's easy to overlook, but it's my favorite cut of Folklore.
If not Seven, then either Ronan or Never Grow Up would probably be appealing. Hell, maybe Begin Again which is another song about a relationship, but much more optimistic. But really I think Seven is a rosetta stone that lets you see how she interprets childhood experiences and allows you to superimpose that image to her other tracks.
Clean from 1989 would sound gorgeous covered on piano, though, sooo

So i think the tears ricochet part is about how the masters thing did hurt her but her hurt has also reflected to Scott Borcheta (the guy who sold the masters) who then got a lot of backlash online
Plus the whole album re-recording thing also kinda ruining the value of her og versions

  • @emmavink
    @emmavink 10 місяців тому +6

Regarding the title, I think she purposefully chose ricochet to reinforce the notion of violence. Of a conflict with casualties. Of battles that have consequences.
The lyrics that strike me the most, other than wearing the jewels she gave him as he buries her, are in the bridge.
"I can go anywhere I want, anywhere I want just not home"... And "you had to kill me but it killed you just the same, cursing my name, drunk on this pain... Crossing out the good years"...
She is basically saying that he didn't only throw her under the bus, he threw away everything they had built together. Not only the music, but the success of the record label and the family type of relationship that they had built since the early part of her career.
There is an anger from her side that goes beyond feeling sorry for him.

Scott Brochetta signed her when she was 14. He was starting a label and Taylor was his first artist. He would not sell her the masters outright. She opted to go with a new record label (she could go anywhere - just not Home to the only record label she had known). She thought of him as family and she came to peace that she would lose her masters. However, then he sold to someone she despised and she did NOT take that with Grace. She let her fans and the media know her feelings. So she decided to re-record her first 6 albums thus Taylor’s Versions were created. They have been a huge success, thus making her original masters and recordings value go down. She didn’t want to have to do it this way - but he forced her into it. Now record companies are putting it in new contracts that the albums cannot be re-recorded for MANY years. It is okay if she is not your musical taste, but she definitely has changed the music industry. She has fought for all artist and their rights to own their own music they have written! So to her fans that supported this journey, we appreciate her sharing this personal song with us and we get what she is singing about.

just convinces me that today if you want to make it as a musician and not get fucked over by big labels, you have to DIY it. I mean, most musicians do it anyway since labels, even smaller or niche ones, will not even give them the time of day, but with cut revenues from physical sales, labels that most often do bad promo work or do it but what does it bring you if you have maybe more sold units, but the percentage that the label gets as a cut eat up your profit, then why did you sign in the first place? being a musician today sucks, everyone is out to fuck you. the consumers do not care to buy your physical product or merch, they have the songs on spotify or youtube on free, the labels and record companies do not care about you, spotify does not care about you, yet you have to do the work of like 4 people (the actual artist composing, recording, mixing and mastering your music, the promo-pr person promoting yourself, building a brand, tending to social media, getting into contact with people in the scene and so on, the producer as in, you have to go private into contracts with producing physical products, not sure if you will even sell them, which means taking a huge loan often times when you are say a decent middle sized band, for people just starting out and maybe pressing 50 cds probably more managable, last but not least touring manager, you have to get your own gigs although there are some decent people and companies aroudn today in sub genres that do great jobs. but even there, many bands already made so many bad experiences they also do this themselves). so it is like the workload of 4 full time single positions with almost nothing to show for it. the old cliche that musicians buy equipment for multiple thousand dollars, spend hundreds of hours just to drive multilple hundred miles to play for one hour to 4 people for 1 beercrate is cliche, but holds truth, at least some. if one day you wake up and may have AI generated music, but there are no clubs, no bars, no bands around that play live, thank this climate for it.

The story is that Scott Borchetta Big Machines owned Taylor Swift’s Masters. Taylor wanted to buy them from him when she left Big Machine after 12 years. He didn’t want her to leave because she’s the one that made him all the money. Being young unfortunately she signed a contract giving him the rights to her Masters. His condition to give her Masters was for every new album she produced he would give her one of her old Masters. She refused that deal because she wanted to leave Big Machine. He wouldn’t sell her the Masters.
Scott Borchetta sold her Masters to Scooter Braun, who is a bully that has tried to make Taylor‘s life miserable for basically all her career. Taylor Swift wants nothing to do with Scooter Braun and Scott Borchetta knew this for years.
Braun went to the extreme of mocking/bullying her online when he purchased the Masters and tried to control Taylor. Being the mastermind she is under no circumstances would she make any deals with Braun, so she is re-recording her albums and owns the masters.
Since trying to take Taylor down Scooter Braun has been dropped by artists, has a big lawsuit, is being investigated and went through a divorce.
Her re-recordings have sold overwhelmingly, much more than the originals.
When she sings about her jewels, it's referring to her masters, and when she talks about stolen lullabies, they are her masters.
When she refers to him/they being at her wake, it's that they killed her yet won't stop trying to bury her.
All the hurt/pain that Taylor went through due to their cruel repetitive actions “ricocheted” back to them. They are now the ones “buried”.
    Her metaphors are genius.
Watch the Long Pond version of My Tears Ricochet 🎶🫶
    You’ll love it.✅

Geez. Don’t go overboard on your impression. 🤨
Her tears ricocheted because she took away the power by re-recording her music and him not getting any more money off of her work. How did you two miss this?
She was hurt, but she stood up for herself against him.
    You’re BOTH way off base.
Before I heard your reactions, I would have recommend “Long Pond Sessions of Exile with Bon Iver., but I truly don’t think you’d even begin to know how to understand her lyricism. She’s at least 5 steps ahead of you. 🤷🏼‍♀️
I don’t think I was ever so let down by a reaction of this song before.
The pianist was too narcissistic to attempt to understand her lyrics because he was concentrating on how to play the piano by a Grammy winning pianist, Aaron Dessner. There was a lot more to this. It just went right over your heads.

Yeah, the thing about Taylor is you just can't have one listen or listen to one song. Richard should consider checking out her Reputation album for more sassiness and grit. And it's okay, guys, you can say you like Taylor publicly and we'll still think you're manly. This critique is like watching paint dry compared to other Rockers/first-timers listening to Taylor from their UA-cam channels. And, it's okay to have emotions. And guys, don't get frustrated with yourself if the song overall isn't something that you'd throw on your playlist! Just remember that, yes of course it's important to hear her lyrics because it's her story that she's telling, but there are very specific things for different songs musically that are going to draw in different people and that's completely fine! Just so you know Swifties aren't going to come at you (well, most of them) if you just say 'oh yeah I really appreciated her storytelling but you know it's not a song I'll revisit because it's not something I would listen to.' What they'll come at you about is if you don't really listen to the lyrics and then misinterpret what she's trying to say in a negative way because of preconceived societal Notions about who she is! That's when the swifties will want to essentially throw over a cliff!😂 For a really amazing, guitar heavy live performance i highly recommend "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" from the 1989 world tour. Trust us, you won't be disappointed!

Tell us you know nothing about the Taylor Swift without telling us. 😂
I love when ppl think they know her music and say with their full chest that her stuff has no meat. Over +200 songs, almost 20 years in the industry, known as one of her generation's best songwriters, but sure, just a pop star, whatever that means. At least give her full discography a chance before dismissing it with your uninformed opinion. But it's your opinion of course and that's cool, and you're entitled to it. Wish it wasn't so obvious that opinion is based off a few songs you know or worse yet based off her just being a 'pop star'. You're missing out but to each their own.
May they react to something more to your liking next time. Be well 🫶🏼

Genuinely asking. What’s “meat” to you? The substance you see her as lacking?
And surely you can acknowledge how your original comment could come across as condescending and dismissive of her, her work, and her fans, instead of just “eh, not my thing.”
