@M D exactly and using the reins for control / steering is incorrect riding, as you should use your seat and legs for that.

MY guy has so much experience that I don't even think about it and just leave it to him
Lean forward downhill and the slipperier it is the more you throw you weight forward
Front legs control the descent and the hind ofter just slide if the slope is really slippery
