      We need austerity as long as the British public at large believes that state finances still work like household finances and will punish a party for looking at alternative models. If Labour doesn't pretend this is true, they will be crucified and out of power for another decade at least.

      @blue.lake.patriotyeh definitely more terraces it's cheaper. I live in a mid terrace council property. I'm happy in it it's a decent size a small garden but we have one and also all properties have garages. These are what we should build it's and cheaper and due to the fact of being joint to other properties they are warmer. It would make more sense to save a bit by building terraced properties and then sticking solar on them to make them more efficient. Affordable homes that are cheap to run.

      @@markysgeeklab8783the wealthy that pay enormous corp tax, provide workers benefits such as sick pay, paid annual leave, matching workers pension contributions, in some cases privatised healthcare/ dental and fundamentally create jobs for the “poor people” all of which eleviate what would be a much greater long term burden on the government?
      Lets make it no longer beneficial for these people to take the risk of starting up successful business in the first place so we can all live in council housing and not work at all, at least that way there’ll be no need for stately homes anymore so we can just flatten them all, the government can steal the land back & just build rows and rows of terraced houses and high rises and we can house all the illegal immigrants that will eventually stop coming when they realise there’s nothing to come for anymore 👍🏻

      And also acknowledge that it’s stupid to say the last govt borrowed too much, when the govt can borrow loads of money from the Bank of England with little to no interest for capital investment, and at no cost to the taxpayer.
      As it is, they’ve cut public spending that actually needs to happen in terms of capital investment to rebuild and invest in the country.
      Also saying that the last govt borrowed too much and looked absurd is literally what the Tories said of Labour in 2010, and Labour are saying of the Tories now. Somethings never change. Namely political parties beholden to neoliberalism.

      So it will always be the same, Labour, Conservatives, Lib Dems, Reform UK, all 4 are always going to try to capture the vote of the right wingers because they are the only ones who are guaranteed to get off their lazy butts and vote, and since right wing voters don't want anything but right wing policies, only ever going to get right wing parties, which in turn leaves the rest of that do vote the choice of: which party is going to hurt us the least for the next 5 years?

Add to that, if you go after the employment and wealth creators, they'll just withdraw from the market and enjoy some quality time rather than running businesses for no gain.

No one making money will pull out because they are making a few percent less. The "If I can't make £1billion pound and only £700 million then I rather make nothing" is absolute rubbish. Also the term "employment creator" is a big lie because all of these companies will do ANYTHING in their power to reduce staff meaning more people on welfare and demanding more public services that don't exist because the Government is giving more and more to businesses and thus the cycle downwards continues.
      People with NO money don't buy services or goods unless they absolutely have to. If the people own no assets (almost there) or resources then they have to pay for them but if they can't then those that own them have to get their money from somewhere (at the moment it's the Government). Basically unless the rich people, families and corporations are taxed massively to let go of some of the assets and resources then the economy won't grow, public and Government will be broke so where are these people going to get their income, dividends, debt revenue, assets from. They would have to start feeding on one another which creates a load of other issues.

      There is ZERO evidence that "if you go after the employment and wealth creators, they'll just withdraw from the market" would happen and it's a myth perpetuated by the media, politicians and the rich. No billionaire person or business is going to throw a strop and say "if I can only make £200million rather than £500m then I would rather make nothing and just leave".
      The basic math is that if a tiny percentage of people/businesses control the vast majority of assets and resources then the economy won't grow and poverty will increase and the government will become bankrupt. The basic of economics is that you need more assets and resources for the economy to grow. That can't happen if the rich won't invest their own money and expect the public and Government to fund it, taking all the risk while they reap all the profit. It can't work.

      You don't understand how the government works or indeed how a representative parliamentary system works, or the remit of the civil service. In short the civil service are there to carry out and support the agenda of the government in power. It's the opposition in parliament as well as the upper house that provide the checks and balances. Unelected officials just do what they are mandated to do and advise as best they can. Ultimately elected officials are accountable for all outcomes.
      What you've just described is the equivalent of being angry that your electrician didn't stop you from running up a huge electricity bill. They are only responsible for making sure you are all wired up and working safely, you are accountable for how it's used and the consequences of that usage.

      The reality is we live in such an equal society that it seems pointless facing up to a few years of pain in terms of getting up the workplace chain, when you see others who entered adulthood already having done more than they'll do all their life. It is a mental illness, and it's hard to face up the reality that you are a poor person.

    Talk is easy. Starmer says his government has done more in eight weeks than the Tories did in seven years. Mmmm. Well, already, as an OAP, I'm worse off, just like I was as a teenager under a Labour government. Well done, Reeves, on snatching away the winter fuel allowance.

  • @nealeTH
    @nealeTH 2 місяці тому +3

    We all know there is a tough job ahead to rebuild after 10+ years of austerity, but instead of making the case of serious rebuilding during the election and in the manifesto, they said nothing except they would stick to Tory budgets. Instantly creating a huge problem that will be impossible to build up from without alienating the entire country as soon as they came into power. Hitting ordinary people who are trying the make life work instead of the soaring and rapidly increasing wealth of the corporations and ultra-wealthy will lead to a collapse in government.
    Labour’s win is on very fragile numbers. Many Labour people withholding their votes as they predicted this would happen. The fragility of the power of this government, brushed away by Labour PR, is very apparent to even the most casual of observers. And next general election is likely to be even lower turnout than the last.

    • @lochnessmunster1189
      @lochnessmunster1189 2 місяці тому

      We haven't had anything like the austerity that the country actually needs. Borrowing is at totally unsustainable levels, and it isn't the fault of the corporations.

    • @nealeTH
      @nealeTH 2 місяці тому

      @@lochnessmunster1189 you conflate two very different things. Growth is the key to the countries problems and with it increased economic activity, richer towns and cites leading to stronger societies with people more able to look after themselves and ultimately sharp increase in tax take is the path. Underpinning this is government infrastructure and capital spend projects targeting economic growth and support to businesses through a clear and sustainable industrial strategy. Austerity is the opposite of this and the principle reason of 16 years of decline.

    I gladly voted labour as I hated the tories. But it feels like it’s the pensioners are paying an unfair burden on the cancelled winter fuel allowance , when gas is going up again in NOV 25. So pensioners are paying twice when no one else is being burdened by the government

    October will prove if we really voted for a Labour goverment and if Starmer is true to his word, Tax those with the widest shoulders and leave the not so welll off alone?. After Starmer has his growth and he has made some well paid jobs, What happens to those left working in a low paid job.

      Where does 'not well off' transition to 'widest shoulders' though? 40k a year but in loads of debt? 60k a year, but the Mrs doesn't work because she's disabled? 80k a year, but the mortgage just went up 50%? Total household incomes above six figures is where I think the line should be drawn, but we know it won't be - it'll be homeowners, pensioners with savings and people (most only just) paying 40% income tax that get hammered. And, just as the Tories threw 'red meat' to their supporters, so too will Labour. And all the clueless students and jobless who voted them in will cheer, blinded by their jealousy at what they THINK is 'rich' people paying their fair share. Meanwhile, the actually rich people will continue being spared and will laugh at EVERYONE!

    What about raising VAT on used and new motor vehicles ???
    Unfortunately the motoring industry is central to the UK economy and until this ceases to be so nothing any chancellor can do will have any major impact on day to day financial affairs
    Even the Boris Bikes initiative failed to shift emphasis from car driving and even though most cities have pedestrianised town centres the urban environment is still entirely dominated by cars

    LOL I'll believe it when I see it. Austerity was put in place to get the middle-class through the 2008 financial crisis, by slashing spending on things the poor benefit most from.
    There was no cost of living crisis until it started affecting the middle-class. After over a decade, they finally began to feel how the poor had been affected for all the time they had been doing pretty well.
    Now, we're expected to believe that Starmer is going to make the wealthy pay their fair share?
    We'll see. There's no more money to be saved by hammering the poor. There's plenty more the middle-class can contribute, so they might have to.
    As for the wealthy ... Starmer got elected by refusing to frighten the Tory horses. If he starts now, it'll be a surprise - and long overdue.
