A very good presentation and explanation. In almost 60 years of boxing, martial arts and Muaythai and still train and teach today, I like to give credit where credit is due

A collab vid or seminar between you and Lyte Burly ( 52blocksinfo) would be excellent :).

Continued: because there is very little deceptive movement coming from the solar plexus, chest, abdomen. But, mainly it is a huge target compared to trying to hit the head. Plus, a good solar plexus shot is a knock out punch without hurting your hand on someone’s skull. Plus, you can avoid fracturing someone’s jaw or eye orbit, if your intent is to stop the aggressor and get out of dodge.

Great tutorial. I think framing is the most neglected technique in martial arts training. Everybody wants to practice those big knock out punches instead. I think I will devote more time to framing. Just a side note. I get confused when sparring with a boxer who is bobbing, weaving, and doing a lot of head movement. For this reason I never focus on doing a head strike, instead I always focus on hitting the solar plexus, because the there is little deceptive movement

I do the same. If kicking is permitted I like leg kicks as well against a guy with fast head movement.

Then you square off against a belly dancer and get confused again. ;)

That double 'prison guard' frame aka The Oneill cover is a great one. It allows for crashing in, then level change for a single or double leg. The blended frame is similar to Porier except he has it out a bit further.

Great Video! How do you train not being open for body shots when covering the head like this? Not for training the shield per se (I understand the importance of compartmentalization in training) but in a scenario where all shots are allowed (and how do you avoid injuries from body shots when doing said training with some level of resistance)?
    Thanks in advance

We never reach down with the hand. Either drop the pint of the elbow with a lateral and crunch or if you’re pinned against a wall, lift a knee to aid. In the street,‘we’re training to go all the way in or all the way out so the Body shot tends to occur less than it does I. Sportive sparring. Ideally I want to read the cues and hit him first aiming for a knockout or else clinch if restraint is my goal, otherwise I’m creating distance and putting obstacles between us. But in drilling we dwell o. Hell and stay I. Phases like this longer to build confidence.

My hypothesis is that Ba ji quan is actually the Elbow-shielded-to-Judo-throw-system that Ba ji quan is basically from China Muslims whose Wrestling from old Persia.

I assume this "shield" is a basic go to for someone who is a beginner in combatives/self defense martial arts. Most basic MMA schools teach head movement and articulate elbows for covering or even the "skull and bones" of the "52 Blocks". I'm not sure about why you would grab your on head unless it was a last ditch move to block a really wild haymaker coming in after someone got into your space. Kelly McCann used to teach (I still think its in his classic vids from about 10 to 15 years back the concept of articulate elbows that from a "shield" or "guard" position you would index your middle finger tips just over both cheek bones (both hands up, elbows in, feet shoulder width apart, body slightly bladed with head down chin down and nose over toes). From here you could fend blows off and or lean in with a spearing elbow followed by an axe hand, chin jab and low destructive kicks to the knees, inner thighs etc. Of course most of this was based on WW2 Applegate/Fairbarn USMC combatives. Lee Morrison of Urban Combatives fame still teaches a variation of this with knees and face mashes etc. I guess my main point is should not the hands be ready to counter attack or preempt rather than holding your own noggin?

Sometimes you don’t have a choice if you’re overwhelmed. It’s a natural response to cover your head if shit gets crazy. You might have missed this: 1:54

Bare knuckle defence is different from gloved. In gloved defense you can vouch your hands on your cheeks because there is padding. If you do that against bare knuckles you’re likely to injure your head and face. Mma assumes a taped and gloved hand. We absolutely use parties and head movement at a distance but if your mid interview and get sucker punched there is no time. Street has very different contexts. It’s like get punched during the weigh in rather than the fight itself. Finally you are in a perfect position to counter . We’re not relying on conventional boxing per se alone so you fire directly from where you are whether that be spiking with the elbow itself, hannerfist, rages, headbutts, knees . Do some bare knuckle work with contact and through it into ambush scenarios with dialogue. You’ll see the difference very quickly.

@@systemacanada good video Kevin I appreciate alot of your stuff so I am not just being critical to "take the piss" but to dialogue. I still don't agree with grabbing the head like you show, but your "washing" movement is a defacto articulate (as in dynamic, moving) elbow slip and cover. Obviously you cover and then counter strike ASAP so the proof is in putting it all together and not over focusing on one component. Look forward to part 2 Kevin and keep making the vids!

@@NormanScyth you need to work what works for you. This has been heavily tested and is by far the highest probability defensive response at close range for me and the majority of my students. Typically practitioners who leave their frame open get overpowered and their guard smashed down. This becomes extremely dangerous when you wielding a knife or stick and and even worse when mobility is limited by a wall or if you’re on your back on the ground.
